    Obama would seem to be heading in that direction.
    BTW, if you’re traveling to the USA be sure your phone, ipod and laptop are -empty-. They can take it at the border, keep it pretty much forever if they like (as in, if you encrypted the drive or p1ssed them off)and they can read the whole storage to see if you’ve been naughty.
    A downloaded copy of Thriller gets you in the “naughty” category. Wipe it or leave it home, kids!

  11. speedy and sounder, I get the feeling from this that certain people have been watching the trouble Iran’s rulers have been having with Twitter, and the Chicoms have with their Great Firewall. They see the self-organizing Tea Parties and cell phone flash crowds showing up to “town hall” meetings, and they say “hmmmmn.”
    Easier to have a convenient “emergency” when you want one, eh? Just hit the “off” button and the rubes can’t organize.
    I SO want to think that’s hopeless paranoia, but like Charles Krauthammer says “I’m no conspiracy theorist, but I’m not a child either.”

    Are they saying they need the ability to expropriate bandwidth so that government communications can get through? Are they talking domesticaly or are they talking only cutting links to outside US territory (bad enough, look at what Iran did)
    Odd bill, don’t understand the need.
    As for certification, isnt that what security clearance is for, if this is about working on government related projects.

  22. With apologies to the 9/11 troofers, I’m fascinated to see what the format of the Reichstag Fire will be.

    With all the state-media language about “right wing” and “mobs” and such, I’m guessing it’ll be some kind of staged “right wing” militia operation. Or, remembering Comrade Trudeau a “apprehended insurrection”.
    I enjoyed Beck’s Thursday part 4 show: all about trying to determine what the threat is to justify a civilian security force with a half-TRILLION budget to equal the military budget.
    On day one of the “financial crisis” I told a good friend that it was a hoax. I stand uncorrected. The emergency was of course that Goldman Sachs (aka the US Treasury Department) was about to lose a lot of dough. Bush was bush-whacked and GS has been made whole again!

  31. Glen Beck made an interesting point. He doesn’t feel that true Democrats are aware of what is going on. I think bambam has hit the revulsion threshold where good people are beginning to see what they have elected. It isn’t going to get any easier. From the stacked Town Halls to kicking grandma down the stairs there is just too much anti-American stuff going on. This is an interview with Mr. Beck, Ms Malkin and an advisor to Pres. Carter about bambam’s civilian army. His show was the top drawing program on any network when he started on the czars. People WANT to know and that is a great start.

  32. Now is the time to start setting up a complementary communications network that would allow people to exchange information locally. All that is needed is a wifi equipped computer and a wifi router and some open source software to setup a mesh wireless network. The computer could be an old 80486 machine running Linux which is more than fast enough to route packets from one node to another.
    I think the software to do this is already out there and one way of preventing people from hogging bandwidth would be to have a balance between personally downloaded packets and forwarded packets. Where I live I can access all of my neighbors wireless routers which means that if most people were running this software one would have a non-government controlled network which could easily span a complete city. The main problem is how to connect from city to city for which one would have to get onto some form of high speed digital long distance link.
    For local organizational purposes this distributed wireless mesh network would be perfect and the only way of disabling it would be to cut off power to the city (I doubt that statist goons would be smart enough to insert numerous poisoned nodes into the network).
    It will be interesting to see how long it takes before it will be illegal to do this sort of thing (statists will probably use some excuse like child pornographers using this type of network to exchange photos).
    This would be a good project to get going as it looks like things are going to get ugly soon. Time to go out and get that generator that my wife keeps on insisting I don’t need.

If I’m reading the comments right, some of you are saying that if (for example) a group of terrorists set up a computer system in some inconspicuous place (that could include a foreign country) and began hacking into security sensitive systems, (Ex: The Pentagon,) the American government and it’s law enforcement agencies should not have the right to shut them down. Wow!!
    So what you’re saying in other words is if someone sends you an explosive device via Canada Post or UPS, no one should have the right to search, inspect and/or stop that parcel until it gets to your house and blows up!
    You guys are really on the ball today!

    If a gang of thugs are going to cause havoc in a computer system–they’re not going to leave a signtaure that reads, “Government of China,” or “Iranian Department of Communications.” They’re going to use an oridinary IP address. And YES, the wires should be clipped!

  35. Joe Citizen, for the scenario you propose there are already numerous mechanisms in place to shut down a foreign hacker disrupting communications in N. America. Someone coming in from outside the country is easy to filter out, especially if they are expecting to get information back rather than just carrying out a DDOS attack using packets with forged headers. The internet has withstood numerous threats and survived and done all of this without any central control.
    The primary concern I would have would be an attack from within if someone created a large enough botnet that was used to attack certain cybertargets. This too can be disabled by simply cutting off all of the infected machines from internet access and can also be done without any need for central control of the internet. Only totalitarians want to be able to control the internet from one point.

    I think regular interdiction methods work just fine for people “going postal” or UPS with bombs.
    I have yet to hear of any bombs that can be sent via the Internet. Well maybe a large voltage spike but those with a Uninterrupible Power Supply (UPS) should be okay, unless it is a nuke with a massive Electro-Magnetic Pulse (EMP) in which case we are all out of luck.
    So far most terrorists don’t have access to nukes…

    Here is a list of non governmental computer systems that might pose a slight risk to security–if they fall into the wrong hands, or vice versa.
    Oil Refineries.
    Air Lines
    Explosives and firearms manufacturers
    Military Vehicle manufacturers and suppliers.
    Aircraft manufacturers
    Power Stations
    etc etc.
    Read S.773-Page 26–lines 3-24.
    The US gov. wants a bill that says they can shut down a private cyber system that poses a threat to public security and/or safety.
    If you want to complicate the story beyond this, go for it! What you’re trying to accomplish here is to have us believe that without just cause–the President’s office is going to shut down private cyber systems for the fun of it–when they have nothing better to do–and there’s nothing on the Discovery Channel.

    I don’t know if you’ve been to a war lately, however bombs are no longer black cast iron balls with a 6 inch fuse on top, like in the movie “Les Miserables.”
    To detonate them–since the 1960s–I believe you need a set of codes that travel through wires, satellites and fiber optic cables, and through electronic devices that are manufactured by the private sector who often transmit plans and blueprints on the internet. Should I go on??

    No Joe, they can already do that. FEMA, Homeland Security, FBI, they all have whatever powers they need to do whatever they need to do in the face of a threat. They do it all the time. They did it a couple weeks ago when there was some incursions into American networks from China.
    What this is, is different. And you know it, if you read the bill. The wording is so vague it leaves the decision to shut down -private-, not government Joe, but private networks on the President’s sole discretion. Like Twitter. Or Google. Or all the cell phones in Oklahoma.
    You don’t find that unreasonable, eh? Is there any power that you think it might be a bad idea for government to have?
