A party in power grows increasingly thuggish;

What the town-hall meetings represent is a feeling of rebellion, an uprising against change they do not believe in. And the Democratic response has been stunningly crude and aggressive. It has been to attack. Nancy Pelosi, the speaker of the United States House of Representatives, accused the people at the meetings of “carrying swastikas and symbols like that.” (Apparently one protester held a hand-lettered sign with a “no” slash over a swastika.) But they are not Nazis, they’re Americans. Some of them looked like they’d actually spent some time fighting Nazis.
Then came the Democratic Party charge that the people at the meetings were suspiciously well-dressed, in jackets and ties from Brooks Brothers. They must be Republican rent-a-mobs. Sen. Barbara Boxer said on MSNBC’s “Hardball” that people are “storming these town hall meetings,” that they were “well dressed”, that “this is all organized,” “all planned,” to “hurt our president.” Here she was projecting. For normal people, it’s not all about Barack Obama.

“Thuggish” too strong a word?

As this column is written, there comes word that John Sweeney of the AFL-CIO has announced he’ll be sending in union members to the meetings to counter health care’s critics.

You know what they say – you can take the politician out of Chicago….

“But I don’t want the folks who created the mess to do a lot of talking. I want them to get out of the way so we can clean up the mess. I don’t mind cleaning up after them, but don’t do a lot of talking.”

  1. It’s time those old union goons earned their standby pay keep. What seems strange is the complete lack of imagination being displayed by the great “O” administration. How tough would it be to get a phony group of black pro-Obamacare oldsters beat up on network TV by some hired thugs pretending to be racist progeny of devil worshiping, handgun owning, insurance company executives?
    It’s not like the MSM would stop to do a smell test before running with the story.

    The Kenyan is one of the ones directly responsible for “creating the mess”.
    His “community organizing” was all about forcing banks, through his organized protests, to give sub-prime loans to people who would never repay them.
    These sub-prime loans were what caused the housing bubble, then the housing bubble burst, which caused the recession.
    Far from “cleaning up the mess”, the Kenyan’s policies are deepening the recession.

    Hate to be a pessimist on this, but Obama can tell his popularity is tanking. He’s no dummy and he knows that if people are this ticked off, it doesn’t bode well for him in 2012 or his lickspittles in up for re-election in 2010. Which is why he’s so eager for ACORN et. al. to get involved with next year’s census.
    There will not be another fair or free election in the USA. Obama will make sure of that because, after all, HE WON and therefore he can be president for however long he pleases.     Yes I do. The tail has been wagging the dog for too long. I understand where you’re coming from though. But even with Acorn, the unions, the MSM, Obama barely won the election. Plus there was poor voter turnout. The old saying about “angry people vote” may prove true next time around.

    When I heard that Jack Layton was going to advise Obama on Health Care issues I couldn’t imagine why they needed him. Now I understand though. He was advising him on how to mobilize unions as gangs of thugs to intimidate honest citizens.

With the Republicans in such disarray, he’ll have no problem winning a second term, its hard enough to unseat a sitting President with a well organized campaign, let alone with one that is in shambles. He made a wonderful appointment to the US Supreme Court. Hs the support and admiration of European countries as well as the majority of Canadians. I say “rock on” President Obama, “rock on”.

As typical of liberals, they do not recognize that when they take away the creator endowed rights, recognized by the Constitution, of speech and assembly from their opponents, they leave the opponents no alternative except flee or fight. The reason we have a deliberative democracy is to defuse the tendency to rebel or create ton ton macutes. Historical experience shows that when any government or its bureaucrats act as the Obama believers have been doing, the result can be very deadly. They need to back off and and let people assemble and talk – not just those who agree with them.

    Agreed, I’ve said as much before. I believe that BO and company were/are banking on a few things. First and foremost that there will be a perceived economic recovery in 2011-2012 that should put him over the top in that election. The reason being, if you spend the trillions they’ve “budgeted” for it will eventually trickle down. Shortly after 2012 the house of cards falls, then the fun starts. Civil unrest from the middle class(mostly white people) becomes a reality, but fortunately for BO the seeds have been sowed(ie..DNS rightwing extremist memo) for 5+yrs in preparation for… after all, it’s in the name of national security.

    I do not know about you but 250K Job loss and 455K reduction in Job Seekers is NOT a sign of recovery it is a sign of Economist driven statistical fantasy and is means that citizens are piling into the safety nets (which will sink State Budgets because the Stimulus will be running out).
    Unemployment in numbers went up but the rate went down (9.5 to 9.4), how stupid do they think people are?
    When the tea parties were ignored and mocked I knew then that the POTUS made a big mistake, he should have acknowledged them. People are tired of not being heard by their politicians, this is only going to get worse the more these people are ridiculed and ignored.
    I say its about time that the Dems get a dose of good old fashioned democracy, and witness real public outrage instead of the manufactured protests of Code Pink and the rest of the Bush Bashers. You see they believe all political protests are constructed because that is what the left does.

    True, the far right, which is a large minority of both the US & Canada, will not have a ruler enacting their policies in either country for a long time. This is because the positive effect of their policies would not be felt until after the election cycle.
    Picture Harper with a strong majority of 200+ seats. He immediately enacts far-right policies and effectively lets go more than half of the federal employees (2/3 is actually better). Even if the unemployment rate is less than 5%, it will immediately jump to double digits after this move. In addition, that’s a lot of voters, many of whom will find it very difficult to find work in the private sector within 4 years. Sure many jobs will move to the private sector, but that will likely take a decade – eons in the political world.
    The best strategy for conservatives are sloth-like moves toward less government with small Liberal carrots thrown into policies from time to time. Harper seems to be doing this.
    We are right to worry about political policies in the short-term, but it took an avalanche of bad things – anti-Bush sentiment, relatively weak Presidential candidate, a massive recession – just to get a Democrat in the White House. Educated americans know about the checks and balances in their system, and will learn when there are virtually none when the legislative branches and President are controlled by the same ideology. They will learn to maintain these checks next November.
    Regardless, the Democrats, Liberals, MSM are all in bed together with a monopoly on hypocrisy: They do it: it’s bad; we do it: it’s good, very good.
