  2. Thinking of showing this to my kids, especially my daughter, as a prime example of how NOT to speak. I could care less if she was speaking in favour of free enterprise and personal responsibility….just the cadence is enough to turn you off any idea she had.
    I remember a femal Biz School prof of mine tearing a strip off a classmate who made a presentation in a similar style. She tried to be gentle about it but she could barely hide her contempt. Fathers and Mothers, don’t let your daughters talk like this, just like you wouldn’t let your son’s speak like Keanau Reeves…whoa…

  4. I tried to watch this painful ignorance to the end, but couldn’t do it – toddlers make more sense. This is what happens when students are not tested in school and teachers are not held to performance achievements. The really sad part of this monologue, is that she is not alone in her graduation class.

Think of this woman every time you hear someone bemoaning low voter turnout, especially among “youth”, every time you see hundreds of thousands of tax dollars being spent on “rock the vote” campaigns, every time you hear of proposals to make voting “easier”. Voting has not been difficult in Canada unless you are a criminal or an idiot, the two groups whom we are now most encouraging to participate.

  7. I had a front tire blowout at 120 km/hr (after hitting a small piece of wood) on my motorcycle near Santa Cruz. Somehow managed to NOT crash and get the MC safely across 3 lanes to the shoulder. I’m shuddering ‘cos I could have ended up like this young lady.

    That some on this forum should rise to disparage this fine young PhD candidate is simply an example of Canadian inferiority.
    This idea that Canadians are somehow better than Americans rests solely on the basis of a slightly nuanced difference in our cultural styles.
    This bright young woman is doing graduate work at Stanford and is probably used to articulating her points of view in a manner that is over the head of her detractors on this site.

  12. We’re often “poo poo’d” in the prairies for eating too much red meat, or not enough seafood. I’ve heard people from major cities on both coasts comment about our unsophisticated palates. I’ve also heard that fish is “brain food”.
    Considering the amount of fish Newfies eat and this lady from the west coast, I challenge the claim that eating fish makes you smarter.

While in the forest industry and having to work on forestry related land use planning boondoggles of various BC governments, I witnessed those like her legitimized by having entire negotiating sectors devoted to furthering their incoherent pathologies.
    Note to Obama: she’s available for the 69th Czar of gobbledygook (agricultural economics) position.

  17. I know that most of us are laughing at this girl’s inanity, but I am reminded of a Norman Rockwell painting, the one where a guy who is obviously working class addresses a meeting, and others (most of whom are better dressed) listen to what he has to say. Here it is:

    I personally think it is a great reflection that any citizen can freely address government officials.
    I didn’t think the girl was right or bright, but God bless her and her government for demonstrating true democracy.

  19. I must confess, my conscience is now bothering me for being too hard on this women and laughing at her. I put myself in her shoes for a moment and thought how horrible it must be to have something like this broadcast on the internet for the world to see and then read peoples remarks. That being said, I am utterly and absolutely in no way attempting to make anyone else feel guilty. For purely selfish reasons (I have a hard time sleeping with an unclear conscience)
    After some reflection, I am giving what I believe to be her motivation and a paraphrase/summary/translation of what I think she was trying to communicate. Although her communication is decidedly unsophisticated, she was in effect saying:
    We are Californians, we are a community, we have much going for us and can get through this difficult economic time with a little ingenuity and some changes. With all our resources and know how – we should all be rich.
    Unlike the easterners we are committed to buy American made products as opposed to products made in China, and shun products made in child labour factories (slavery reference). We have had a good growing year, and being the bread basket of America we need to take advantage of this through better use of our land and the products produced. For instance, frozen foods last longer than fresh – we could freeze more of what we produce for sale later. In regards to production, we need to be looking into finding better ways to get a higher quality and quantity yield from the crops. Scientific research into pesticides that will not only serve in ridding the pests that destroy our crops but will simultaneously enable us to capitalize on the growing demand for organically certified produce. Land use and the rising costs farmers face to grow these crops are other issues that need to be addressed – with all our experts and intellectual capital we could certainly come up with a way for California to delegate land use more effectively at minimal cost.
    California also has many talented and skilled persons who are experts in their fields and we need capitalize on our intellectual and human resources to expand our mining, silkworm and manufacturing sectors. Our small business sector is currently being impacted by the high cost of real estate. Residential rents are taking a far greater percentage of net income than necessay resluting in a lack of personal capital, preventing those who do want to start their own businesses from doing so. This problem could be resolved through lowering residential rents to free up personal capital and educating potential small business owners on available government loans and initiatives the Bush government has allocated for for this purpose.
    Her heart was in the right place and she showed courage in coming forward to remind Santa Cruz and California of all they have to offer at a difficult time.
    Enough said. I hope I can sleep peacefully tonight. Yes, I know I have an overactive conscience. I laughed just as hard, if not harder than anyone else.

I wish I had read your post b4 I posted my lengthly one translating her ideas and concepts into what I believe she was trying her best to communicate. You said more in your short answer than in my long one. However, I do think she is probably more intelligent than we are giving her credit for – often the ideas are there – the expression or ability to express is lacking. Thanks for your thoughtful comment.

    This sort of verbal and written illiteracy is pandemic currently……..
    This is not limited to California or the USA….the extent of this in Canada is easilly established…..how many voted Green…..or for the “Green Shaft”?

    True indeed.
    When my son was in grade 1 we had to switch schools due to a work related transfer. His first school taught the phonetic reading method, the new school was teaching the new “sight” reading method. My son had a very difficult time with the “sight” reading method. In grade 2, his ability to spell words correctly was negatively affected dramatically through this method. I had to work with him each evening to re-teach him how to read and spell phonetically. I was told by the school not to worry about his spelling and that the problem would be remedied in grades 4 and 5. I thought they were crazy and decided to teach him myself and ended up doing the same thing with my other children.
    Our education system needs serious improvements.

  35. Hats off to “No-One”. Your compassion is a lesson for me. That girl may well have had a more coherent presentation in mind, only to have it fall apart due to stage fright. But it doesn’t really matter. She wasn’t harming anyone, and her intentions seemed gentle and benign. Therefore, she doesn’t deserve to be humiliated. I hope she never sees the ridicule posted on this and other sites.

    She has brought the humiliation upon herself and is deserving of any scorn thrown her way.
    If I was to step up to the plate, trusty Louisville Slugger in hand, to face Randy Johnson and flailed helplessly at three high, hard pitches on the inside corner while simultaneously wetting my pants (the former is a certainty – the latter is a good possibility), I would be ridiculed mercilessly … and deservedly so.
    Anytime someone voluntarily makes a fool of him/herself, he/she has to accept the consequences. “Nice try” just doesn’t cut it.

    Biff: Where did you learn that ineptness merits ridiciule and humiliation? Who taught you that? I think you’re being too hard on her, and I suspect you are often too hard on yourself as well.
