Good evening ladies and gentlemen, welcome to SDA Late Nite Radio.
Tonight, for your delectation, here are Mr. Jerry Lee Lewis and the boys
performing Boogie Woogie Country Man ¤, in Paris, in 1981 (2:36).
Your Reader Tips are, as always, welcome in the comments.

That is an example of natural talent. Thanks Vit.
Now, wasn’t his cousin Oral Roberts or some other skypilot from out the South and I think he caused a scandal by marrying another cousin who was just 13 years old? I don’t even know if he is still alive,
but boy could he rock that pi-ano!
He sure is one of a kind. (one of my favourites)
I wonder what must go through the mind of his piano teacher.
For you photography buffs…

Larry:
Jerry Lee Lewis was cousins with Jimmy Swaggart and Mickey Gilles. A very musically gifted family.
Larry- I believe Jimmy Swaggart is his cousin.
“Great Balls of Fire” was the first song I could remember the lyrics to, so I’ve been told. I was probably all of 2 years old when it hit the airwaves.

“NASA now saying that a Dalton Minimum repeat is possible
28 07 2009
Guest Post by David Archibald
NASA’s David Hathaway has adjusted his expectations of Solar Cycle 24 downwards. He is quoted in the New York Times here Specifically, he said:
” Still, something like the Dalton Minimum — two solar cycles in the early 1800s that peaked at about an average of 50 sunspots — lies in the realm of the possible.”
NASA has caught up with my prediction in early 2006 of a Dalton Minimum repeat, so for a brief, shining moment of three years, I have had a better track record in predicting solar activity than NASA.”

“Met Office forecasting ability questioned by the Beeb.
28 07 2009
Not only does the Met Office/Hadley Climate Center have trouble with pesky “moles” this week, they are now finding a staunch ally, the BBC, is questioning their forecasting ability. One wonders if they will improve using “deep black”, the 1.2 megawatt supercomputer they just purchased.”

Latest from Afghanistan:
Michael Yon, Night Into Day
After breakfast, the soldiers pulled on their body armor and what seemed like dozens of sorts of weapons: rockets of various sorts, different types of machine guns and rifles, grenade launchers with odd sorts of grenades, hand grenades, pistols, knives, radios (probably most deadly of all) and lots of attitude. A few soldiers smoked last cigarettes and then we trod on foot into some of the most bomb-laden stretches of Afghanistan. Everyone wore night vision gear, but it was so dark that I left the PVS-14 flipped up, on standby mode, and used what little ambient light was there…
“Leaked DFAIT Memo Documents Struggle Between Conservative Political Staff and Foreign Service”
———
There are so many things wrong with this it’s hard to know where to begin.
First off, these foreign service deadbeats work for the duly elected government. They don’t make policy, they follow it. If they want to make policy, they can run for office. (the same could be directed at judges.)
Secondly, how pitiful is it that their only use in life is nitpicking over the wording of entirely useless, unread “policy papers”? I mean, when all you have to live for in life is the wording of trivial news releases then I guess changing that wording is like taking a poor child’s only toy away. Pitiful.
We send these preening peacocks around the world at great expense (the diplomats at least,) give them lavish expense accounts, put them up in palaces and they do… what exactly?
If you’ve ever been overseas, the rule of thumb if you ever get into trouble is to run to the US or UK embassy first, then try to flee the country, way down the list (if you are really, really desperate,) you may try the CDN embassy but don’t hold your breath. Canadian diplomats seem to believe it isn’t their problem to help Canadian citizens.
A friend of mine worked in Saudi Arabia. The US citizens were all able to attend the embassy parties. Ditto the UK expats. The Canadians were locked out of theirs unless they were connected enough to get an invite. I guess the embassy is there for the elite’s benefit and that of their friends. Good thing they pay for it themselves… er…

“Adoption families buoyed by meeting with Ont. minister

Just a reminder, Sept. 2009, coming to a theater near you;
Blowing the whistle?
A judge ordered a pre-sentencing report for early September. The Crown wants Corbeil to do jail time but Corbeil’s lawyer says he should stay out of jail because he never made a penny from the fraudulent transactions.
However, Corbeil says he will reveal who profited from the scam, suggesting more names will come out in connection with the scandal that helped to bring down Paul Martin’s minority Liberal government in 2006.
Two separate scams
In 1997, Corbeil took a $50,000 Liberal donation from a businessman south of Montreal on a promise to clear up red tape in a complicated land deal. The businessman had wanted to expand a quarry in St-Jean-sur-Richelieu.
The fraud charge stems from Corbeil signing for Liberal bills that he knew were fake and then funneling $117,000 to companies owned by the late Joe Morselli, a onetime Liberal organizer. Corbeil was arrested and charged in April of last year.
A public inquiry found the sponsorship program gave $150 million to Liberal-friendly ad agencies in Quebec for little or no work while the Grits were in power.
Well I’d say she’s doing so well without a teleprompter she is fully qualified to take over from Ahhhhnowld when he gets the boot/walks away.
California will be in good hands
Torontians, ask yourself as you look at your obscene tax payments what am I getting for my money. City taxes were for our basic services, sewers, roads, snow shovelling and garbage pickup. Check your statements like your Utility Bill and notice you are now charged for sewers, unwanted garbage bins and their pickup. All our basic costs as residents are now user fees but have our taxes gone down, with Brother Miller each and every year they go up by at least 4% compounded.
In a city where a TTC ticket taker makes over $125,000 a year, where the public union employee now take home 32% more in wages and benefits than the private companies can pay, where we have an unfunded liability of $2.3 billion dollars to cover their benefits and $140 million for the sick bank, where EMS staff allowed a man to die rather than break union ranks, where the police with their union and our politicians supported the CUPE thugs rather than their fellow citizens.
The main issue in this strike was 18 days a month of bankable sick time given to the union in an attempt to beg the union members to please, please come to work in the face of their staggering sick time abscences, which Brother Miller has fully caved on. In addition when 1,000s of private company employees are still being laid off they are given a 6% raise!
This is totally the citizens of Toronto’s fault! Because we will not vote we have allowed the leftists to control this city. Imagine the mayor of Canada’s largest city refusing to cross the picket line of his fellow unionists into Toronto’s City Hall yet bleating he represents all of us.
To the rest of Canada at least learn from our stupidity and grow a spine like Windsor did.
Blowhard partisanship couldn’t possibly cause idiocy, could it?
Or is Bill Reilly’s idiocy result in partisan blowhardship?

“Readers remember
‘His life was Parliament’”
“Bob Bott, Calgary:
I knew Jerry when I worked for UPI in the Parliamentary Press Gallery from 1969 to 1974.
He was a font of knowledge on the parliamentary system, and although partisan, provided huge amounts of objective background even when it did not necessarily aid his cause. He was probably the most accessible of all the political aides and spokesmen I have known. He was also a fine raconteur and conversationalist.
We were never quite sure how serious he was about his ambition for a Senate appointment. He claimed he was looking for some property, maybe in Quebec, so he could constitutionally qualify. I always thought he would make a fine Senator and was disappointed he never made it there. He is presumably now in some other, higher body – hopefully enjoying some single malt with Alan J. MacEachen. Stanley Knowles might join them later for tea.
So let’s lift a glass to a fine young man (it’s a shock to realize he was two years younger than me, since he seemed so wise when I knew him).”

Health care rationing and socialism kills people. And the US system throws several hundred thousand families per year into bankruptcy & financial ruin due to catastrophic health care costs.
But thanks for the clarification. And as your comment points out, partisanship does indeed cause idiocy.
I thought your O’Reilly catch was quite good, Hardboiled. However, I have unpublished your 15:45. To be clear: if you (or anyone else, for that matter) think that SDA Reader Tips is a place to hang out for the purpose of insulting this blog, then you have another think coming.
Yes hardboiled it will be a wonderful thing knowing no doctor got your dollars, as you lie rotting in the grave. Personally I think it is up to the Americans to decide how to run their country and their health system. I would simply like to see an honest discussion about our own woefully inadequate system. Maybe its just me and that Christian thing of removing the plank in your own eye so you can see clearly enough to remove the speck in your brother’s eye.
Can’t you guys ever comment on anything without calling each other names?

“Military planning for possible H1N1 outbreak
WASHINGTON (CNN) — The U.S. military wants to establish regional teams of military personnel to assist civilian authorities in the event of a significant outbreak of the H1N1 virus this fall, according to Defense Department officials. The proposal is awaiting final approval from Defense Secretary Robert Gates. The officials would not be identified because the proposal from U.S. Northern Command’s Gen. Victor Renuart has not been approved by the secretary. The plan calls for military task forces to work in conjunction with the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
There is no final decision on how the military effort would be manned,…”

One more comment on Toronto’s strike. Here is the statistic on the wage expense for the city. They have raised taxes and user fees everywhere and depleted all their rainy day funds. This year with the recession tax revenue will surely fall and California here we come. Do the unions give a damn, not a chance!
“In 1999, City of Toronto wages and benefits took up 67% of taxes and user fees collected by the city only. Since 1999, the city’s wages and benefits expenses have increased 55% to $4.2-billion, to the point where they now absorb 82% of the city’s revenues from taxes and user fees. In the words of the bond-rating agencies, the city’s financial picture — and the fate of taxpayers — remains under negative review for possible downgrade.”

re: “We were never quite sure how serious he was about his ambition for a Senate appointment.”
What did he ever do for this country that would have made him deserving of a Senate appointment?
