  1. One of the highlights of my Saturdays is to wake up early, but on a brew of freshly ground coffee, and sit down to the National Post. With Frum, Ivison, Black, Jonas in the front section and Solomon, Foster, Corcoran and Watson in the Financial section, it’s a great read to see the Left so hopelessly outflanked week in and week out.

  8. Having lived through this, let me explain what happened.
CFC’s had been around for a few decades. R-12 was cheap, very cheap. Commodity market; cost of production plus margin. The change to HFC gasses required us to carry twice the refrigerant as before. And we were viciously selective. It was/is possible to carry 3-4 times the refrigerant to have on hand what was out there. The cost of the replacements were 3-4 times the original. Dupont had a large number of refrigerants on the market, each one specific to a usage or market, with duplication. Commodity hell long gone. High margins.
We are into another change right now. R-22 equipment is now not available. The gas is available, prices are going up, and a bunch of alternatives are coming on the market. All at much higher prices, 6 times to what R-22 was two three years ago. And again, we will have to carry a couple of refrigerants where one was required before.
When the required efficiency rating for air conditioning was increased from 10 SEER to 13 SEER a few years ago the installation price was forecast by the proponents to increase maybe 7-9%. The real increase was >30%. The incentives out right now from the feds for Energy Star equipment which is greater efficiency than the base standard covers the cost difference + the inspection report compared to 13 seer equipment.
Expect the next round of standards to increase costs even more. And you will pay it. Your vegetables will be more expensive, frozen foods, anything refrigerated, or for that matter air conditioned stores.
And the nasty reality behind all this is the promised efficiency increases are valid if installed correctly and maintained correctly. Big if.
    Derek
