  1. ET, respectfully I would request that you consider prefacing your dissertations about the inevitability of structural societal change in order to reflect population size (I accept your thesis…but likely didn’t summarize it well) with something along the lines of:
    – without some external force changing the rules; or
    – left to their own devices.
    A nuclear or biological conflagration started by any one of these desperate despots will negate any societies’ slow evolution.
    with nuclear proliferation apparently accepted by Obama, that potential becomes more likely to eclipse evolutionary change every single day.

    You know just in case human nature as shown throughout millenia supersedes the critical mass you seem to believe mankind has reached.
    Personally I don’t believe that “bread and circuses” worked all that well in keeping the Goths out of Rome.

  4. eeyore- it isn’t a ‘slow evolution’. It is a flip from one structure to another, and that flip is violent. And certainly, the conflict between the society’s inability to constructively interact with a more functional neighbouring society can well set up that internal crisis.
    Joe – what ‘critical mass mankind has reached’? I don’t know what you are talking about. And what ‘bread and circuses’ are you talking about?
