Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

It is 8:30pm (mountain time) and it looks like Google has been sent a strong message.
The tetris emblem has been removed.
Sorry guys. I forgot to mention “too little too late” on my last post.
In contradistinction to google’s choice for today, SDA left the image of a dead rodent in her masthead, and made no mention whatsoever to the events of D-Day, other than by way of sarcastically pointing out that google didnt either.
gord….
my good friend did 35 missions in a halifax…he was from winterpig…his whole high school class enlisted same day.
he reckons he’s deaf(as he now is) from his 4 30 cal guns……he was a mid turret gunner officer(so he must have been a clever boy)
it was amusing…..a fortnight ago the old woman went to see friends in Spain…the flight was vancouver/frankfurt….as we wished her adieu and bonne chance and bon voyage ‘Arnie'(which is the mid turret gunner’s name) said, “ah yes…i’ve been to frankfurt”.
Oops, I made an error on my previous post – should have read Ratt instead of Kate – no offense Kate
“John Begley, Cal and Ratt,”
In August of 1914, on Britain’s declaration of war on Germany, British Foreign Secretary, Sir Edward Grey stated: The lamps are going out all over Europe; we shall not see them lit again in our lifetime. He told the truth as Germany was to invade all of Europe some 20 years later. Now the same holds true, but it is the lamp of the sanctuary that is going out, and all over the world.
Ever:
D-Day was the day that was neccessary to take back Europe from a psychopath that wanted to remold the world to his warped vision.
The realization of how neccesary came later when the allies started liberating the death camps.
sacrifice is like that, you don’t do it because of want, but out of need.
Both sides of my family were liberated (occupied Holland) by Canadian soldiers – a big part no doubt of why they came here. Canadian soldiers firing from my father’s village at Germans in my mother’s village. Two buried in her back yard.
I forget where i read it but when the Canadians came to town no dutch guy could get a date heh. Had a friend, his father helped liberate Holland – he said it was the best time of his fathers life.
McGollam called. He’s inquired as to whether a thread will be forthcoming in regards to Vichy ridge soon.
Not to belittle D-Day in any way, but apparently the Soviets killed 5/6 of all killed German soldiers, and the Western Allies 1/6 (accurate source anyone?).
Too bad the Western Allies didn’t continue east (presumably due to Roosevelt) after the Germans had been defeated. That could have prevented 45 years of Communism in Eastern Europe, and the cold war may not have happened.
Anyways, this (D-day) is certainly a day when we should recall the horrors of collectivism(Communism, National Socialism, Fascism) and honour those who sacrificed their lives fighting it.
it would seem that those who won’t fight for freedom will eventually lose it.
johan. i think churchill wanted to do just that.
Ever – June 6, 1:00pm – Now lets have you rewrite that blog in German. High German, low German – not matter. Do it in German or maybe in Japanese.
” What say you to that, Kathryn? Paulsstuff? dmorris?
wallyj?
Juxtapose that, why dontcha”— from Philboy. Well boy,I say that a radio host messing up the names should not be compared to the frigging Prime Minister messing up the names. If Harper had said Omaha beach, you would have a valid point, but as always, you missed the boat again.
After yesterday’s D Day program on Newsworld, Jack Granatstein was interviewed. No wonder that Ever is an ignoramus. Jack said that no Canadian history is taught in four provinces in Canada and in the rest of Canada it is up to teachers. If they don’t like war, they can avoid WW1 and WW2.
I was born in London during WW2, have never served in the forces, but I have huge respect and gratitude for all that have served.
Chris Wallace was one of the commentators on Fox News yesterday describing the ceremonies commemorating the 65th anniversary of D-Day. He got Barak Obama right, he got Nicolas Sarkozy correct, he even got Gordon Brow’s name right but when it came our own Prime Minister – in the US he is now known as Brian Harper.
Sheeeesh!
Put an “n” on Mr Brown’s name and my above post is then complete. Sheeeeesh?
If Harper had said Omaha beach, you would have
a valid point, but as always, you missed the boat again.
Not at all, loser. The point is, people
make mistakes, politicians you don’t like,
and right wing open-mouth yahoos.
But this wasn’t misspoken or misread, the
newscaster read what was written on the page,
and did so all day long.
I lost a grandfather and two uncles fighting the Nazis, both from my mom’s side.It never donned on me until I read Ever’s post how much it impacted my life,a strong male presence from my mom’s side would have countered the weak male presence from my dad’s side, embarrassingly enough,my dad boasted about forging his release papers as the war was irrupting.
Ryan – your dad probably had some talents and character traits that made you proud of him. We all have said or done things in our lives that we wish we could re-do. Just chalk this one up to human weakness – forgive him – and get on with your life.
