Reader Tips

Good evening ladies and gentlemen, welcome to SDA Late Nite Radio. Tonight, for your delectation and pursuant to our Saturday night distinguished lecture, documentary & interview series, here is Dr. Walter Lewin, professor of physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is well known for his M.I.T. OpenCourseWare lectures for their first and second physics courses: 8.01 ~ Classical Mechanics and 8.02 ~ Electricity and Magnetism. Prof. Lewin is also well known for his shtick, his love of his subject matter, and his devotion to his students’ quest for knowledge. Before digging further into 8.01 and 8.02, you might like to check out this interview with Walter.

Needless to say, I’ve watched all 72 lectures, totaling about sixty hours (partly because I like them better than many other so-called forms of entertainment, partly for old-times’ sake, and partly because they apply every day to every-day life), and while it’s difficult to pick favourites, I will say that one of my favourite lectures is 8.01-28: Hydrostatics, Archimedes’ Principle, & Bernoulli’s Equation, in the Goldilocks sense: it’s not too hot, it’s not too cold: it’s just right (sort of like my lecture on the 30’th anniversary of the Peng-Robinson Equation of State). Anyway, without further ado, here are the lectures:

· M.I.T. Physics 8.01
Classical Mechanics
 ·  M.I.T. Physics 8.02

  1. so with such an old principle , why is it that the MSM insists that when the Arctic icecap melts or an Antarctic iceshelf melts , that the oceans will rise?
and the closest thing to Bernoulli they get is the velocity of air that comes out of their mouths.

  2. It’s no big deal, I’m sure, but the whole blog does seem to have slid a few inches over to the left. And I don’t mean ideologically.

  3. That would of course be left as in right. Judge me when you’re perfect.

  4. Vit – actually it looks like you’ve got a /table tag that is missing its closing angle bracket.
Don’t mean to be picky, but there’s got to be a reason why everything shifted to center for me, right? 😉

  5. Roger that, Eugene, thanks, and it has been fixed. You can see why in our product I created a higher-level markup language to down-translate into HTML. Raw HTML is a silly markup language, at least for humans; and while it’s not bad object code, it should be Huffman encoded.

  6. Hi Kate ,

    Paul.

  7. thanks for the reading, strange that as an engineer born, raised and trained in Alberta you would think I would have known Peng-Robinson was from the U of A. Goes to learn one can learn something on the weekends still.
Now of course like an engineer I’ll spend the rest of my night with a bottle of scotch and wikipedia on the subject…

  8. Vitruvious — Re: “I keep getting this email for Colon Clenser, but I’ve checked
carefully, and the colon hammer on my typewriter isn’t dirty.” That is very funny. Thank you.

  9. Hey Vit – liked that Archimedes one !!
Tis why boats are stable and tis why airplanes fly and tis why Gore doesn’t know his a$$ from a teakettle.
note: would sure hate to try and write those exams 40 years latter 🙁

  10. From Jane Taber last week. Didn’t make headlines did it?
Hot: A Bermuda beach. Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff urged his caucus last week to use this break week to fan out in their ridings, talk about employment insurance changes and take the pulse of their constituents.
Meanwhile, Mr. Ignatieff and his wife, Zsuszanna Zsohar , took off Monday for Bermuda.
Mr. Ignatieff, who is portrayed in the recent Tory attack ads as a snob who spends little time in Canada, was spotted on the southbound plane, happily reading Dan Brown’s mystery thriller (now a major motion picture) Angels & Demons . No heavy political tome for him.

  11. It occurred to me, after reading the latest offering from Steve Janke (http://stevejanke.com/archives/287680.php) that there is a more logical reason behind Liberal donations being up this quarter than the Conservative “attack” ads.
It’s quite simply that all of the MPs have fund raising goals that they have to meet in order to secure their riding for the next go around (what, in the fall? Next Spring?). Liberals aren’t donating because of the ads, they’re donating because there’s a concerted effort by the MPs and candidates to sign up members and “victory fund” donors before June 1st. To quantify – 77 MPs at 10 Victory Fund donors per = 770 Donors at $1100 each = 847k, and we aren’t even talking about regular two bit donors. Moreover, 77 MPs @ 400 members each at $10/membership = another $308k. In essence, that’s about 1.1 Million without even considering the minor donors.
Given this, it will be more interesting to see what happens to the donation numbers during the summer, after Iggy’s deadline, especially if the ads are still running at that point (which they likely won’t).

  12. Left’s EI Reform Desire Is VERY BAD Policy
    http://thecanadiansentinel.blogspot.com/2009/05/lefts-ei-reform-desire-is-very-bad.html

You know how talking heads, “experts” and politcians have been saying that cutting the GST, as the Harper Conservatives have done, is “good politics, bad policy”?
And remember how the Liberals blasted the Tories for cutting the hated GST by a couple percentage points, and even openly mused about raising it back to where it was?
Looks like the shoe is on the other foot now.
    (…)
Also, how come the Big Media isn’t making a big stink about how bad the socialists’ policy desire would be for Canada and Canada’s economy? Why did they make a big stink over the GST cut, but they won’t make a big stink over THIS, which is infinitely worse economically and socially?
I guess the Big Media doesn’t care, either. They just want their guys to win, so they’ll hold off on criticism of their guys’ bad policies.

  13. Experts Blast Obama’s Auto-Fuel-Efficiency Plan
    http://thecanadiansentinel.blogspot.com/2009/05/experts-blast-obamas-auto-fuel.html
    The bottom line:
We’ll be paying a LOT more for cars a LOT smaller which will be only a LITTLE more fuel-efficient and a LITTLE less polluting.
Why? Because the CAFE deadline Obama’s imposing is technologically impossible to meet.
Government is just getting more and more oppressive, imposing draconian stuff on us all, reengineering the economy and society according to Marxist principles.

  14. “Facts by Decree”
On the results of the torture memos not being disclosed:
“And so instead of being shown the evidence, the fact of waterboarding being nothing more than an “experiment” that went horribly wrong, is decreed from above.
This is perhaps the most important issue of disclosure in our generation and the media takes a pass. We know with some certainty, that the group that went to the ends of the earth to determine the uteral affairs of a VP nominee’s daughter, doesn’t lack the capacity to have the facts released. It lacks the will. They know they won’t like the answer. They prefer the facts as they are decreed.”

    Stand Up With Randy Hillier.

    “Hillier fumes over aboriginal protests
‘What we’re into is a long, drawn-out conflict’
Randy Hillier, the outspoken Progressive Conservative leadership candidate, says he is frustrated at the prospect of another summer of protests by native activists.
The libertarian Conservative MPP who helped found the Ontario Landowners Association is fuming over the blockade of a gravel quarry near Pembroke on Wednesday.
Mohawk protesters have also occupied a quarry near Hillier’s riding, Lanark-Frontenac-Lennox and Addington, for more than two years, he said.
    “I think it’s absolutely bulls–t,” he said. “I think it’s downright criminal.”
Hillier believes First Nations should voice their grievances without interfering with the right of individuals to earn a living.”

  16. Att. Robert Fulford:
Do not use “we” lightly. Search here for the non-nuts.
The UN does not speak here for “we” Canadians.
Start your search with: “Louise Arbour”; “Maurice Strong”, etc.
Find out what “we” here think/know about the UN.
    …-
“Robert Fulford: The UN speaks, and the world listens. Are we nuts?
“Having no authority with loftier credentials to turn to, we habitually and foolishly believe what the UN says”
With Gaza quiet and the civil war ended in Sri Lanka, the United Nations has put its investigators on the job, assigning them to produce official reports that will almost certainly add to the world’s store of duplicity and hypocrisy.
Next month a team from the UN Human Rights Council will hold hearings in Gaza on war crimes possibly committed during the Israel-Hamas fighting. In Geneva on Monday the Council will begin studying Sri Lanka because (as its typically pompous statement declares), “The international community must strive to deliver justice to victims of human rights violations wherever they occur and ensure that those found guilty of such crimes are held accountable for their actions.”
One of the wonders of the world is the reputation of the United Nations.”

  18. How completely lacking political instincts is it to whine about the Conservative ads and then jet off to Bermuda?
As the Canadian winter breaks across the country, countless Canadians are heading out to cabins, camping, heading out to lakes that are as cold as a deep freeze, and Iggy goes to BERMUDA???
You go spend your salary that the taxpayer paid for outside the country there Iggy…that will sure help our economy.
For Pete’s sake, he could have at least gone to Algonquin Lake (Park? whatever). We know he likes that.
Almost everyone I know has lost jobs, had salary cuts, or has suffered some sort of financial hardship in the last few months. And this TOOL takes off to BERMUDA???

  19. This whole horrible case of the murder of Tori Stafford reminds me of the way nurse Susan Nelles was charged with murdering babies in a Toronto hospital in 1991 I believe. Nelles was charged in part because of the calm and unemotional way she responded to police questions. She was a professional nurse and that was just her personality. But the police that it was strange she didn’t react more emotionally.
Tori’s mother McDonald also didn’t react ‘normally’ and was the prime suspect, to the detriment of the search I think.
I guess if you don’t react the way people do on Oprah shows when police question you, you too can be a suspect in a murder.

Do not show this to Liberal Iggy’s Nana Dhalla.
    …-
“At least 11 wounded in fight in Vienna temple
VIENNA — Worshippers of Indian origin armed with knives and at least one gun fought one another in a temple in the Austrian capital on Sunday, and at least 11 were wounded, police and ambulance staff said.
Police spokesman Michael Takacs said the brawl occurred in Sikh temple, but Mohnder Ram, a worshipper who said he had attended services there for decades, said Hindus, Sikhs, Christians and others regularly attend the Shri Guru Ravidass Temple. He said the attackers were Sikhs from a temple in another Vienna district.
Witnesses said the fighting erupted between worshippers in a dispute over the sermon.
Police said at least six men, one wielding a gun and the others knives, attacked the preacher. Other worshippers rushed to his aid, resulting in the melee.
Police spokesman Michael Takacs said all six attackers were in critical condition, while the wounds of the others were less serious. More people may have been slightly hurt and run out of the temple before police arrived, he said. Takacs said he did not know the motive of the brawl. He identified the temple as Sikh.
Ram, 72, said, “I heard four to five shots” in the temple. “People started screaming, children were crying as they ran out. It was like war. There was lots of blood everywhere.”
Ram said the preacher, whom he said was Hindu, was among those shot.
An unidentified witness cited by the Austria Press Agency said the brawl was started by fundamentalist Sikhs from a higher caste, who accused the guru of being disrespectful with the Holy Book.
All the wounded were men of Indian origin …”

  21. Ignatieff to Harper: Mess with me at your peril:
    http://news.guelphmercury.com/News/article/485594
Summary: Stop pretending you’re not scared of me. Ignatieff is threatening to force an election Harper wants him to force. In the Spring; on our streets.
Don’t the Grits know the treatment Ignatieff can expect in an election will make these ads seem like good natured ribbing? They’re going to tear him apart. Ignatieff has piles of political baggage, no policy experience, running a party that is flat broke. Everybody knows it and they obviously don’t care.
Grits went negative on Harper from minute one, and been hypocritically bleating that he’s a bully ever since. Their philosopher king was supposed to inherit power, not opposition, where you actually have to present an alternative view and agenda (Ignatieff is quoted as saying that’s not his job as Leader of HMLO).
No he isn’t the White Northern Obama, as some GlobeMail columnist opined. That would require charisma and an ability to excite your grassroots.
Right now, Canadians want, as Warren Kinsella says an, “everyman” such as Stephen Harper, though he is also expected to be a politician too, despite our complaining. (Yes, WK does have some redeeming qualities, he actually admires PMSH).
They don’t want to be invited to a seminar or town hall meeting. Elections are small blips in our national culture and you have to seize the moment.
PMSM didn’t quite do that in the last election, and that IMO, coupled with the sub prime meltdown, cost him a majority.
He doesn’t appear prepared to make that mistake again. The MSM, of course are outraged at Harper’s negativity, though they were gleefully silent during the “woman shot with unregistered handgun while attempting to have an abortion in a back alley on an aircraft carrier, ” commercials.
The Tim Horton’s set, who actually decide elections now, though disinterested, are not blind to double standards. The Liberals have harpooned themselves supporting the cockeyed coalition with silly Jack and Gilles. They haven’t paid back any of the ill gotten Adscam booty. They haven’t formulated anything resembling a policy framework or platform.
In short, they’re huffing and puffing with empty election threats, mainly because Jack and Gilles likely won’t let them anyway.

  22. Thank you Brian Mulroney and John Crosbie.
…In the past seven years, the federal government has received $1.12 billion in profits from its 8.5-per-cent interest in the province’s largest offshore oilfield.
CHHC, which has managed that ownership stake since Gulf Canada pulled out of Hibernia in 1993, turned its first profit for Ottawa in 2002.
That was the year the corporation repaid a $431-million loan from the federal government covering its share of the Hibernia development costs between 1993 and late 1997, when the field pumped first oil.
…I was working in Tronna in 92 & 93 during Rae Days and every major newspaper editorial was slamming this investment as nothing but a make work project and a handout that would fail miserably.
Funny how those same editorials never mention the extra 5.4 billion a year that Quebec now receives from the health and social transfers to provinces. (H/T Cal2) What is the ROI from this for Canada?
Did you know that the only province receiving less in transfers since the CPC came to power is NL? Did you know that Quebec has/will be receiving an extra $641 per person and NL will be receiving $648 per person less this year since the CPC came to power?
Where else does a government loan/grant give an 8.8% ROII? How much extra has the feds received in payroll, gst, corporate, and income taxes from the Hibernia investment, not to mention the springboard effect this has had on other developments like White Rose, Terra Nova and the soon to be Hebron Ben-Nevis plays which also generate huge amounts of the taxes mentioned above?
How much will the taxpayer bailout to the CAW return to Canadians?
    Heh.

  25. “Go to any theater, museum or open-air concert, and you’ll quickly realize that ideas beyond the mindscape of the left are unwelcome there. A contemporary play that doesn’t critically settle scores with the market economy? Unthinkable. An artist who, until George W. Bush left the White House, could associate anything with America other than Guantanamo, Abu Ghraib and the Washington’s refusal to sign the Kyoto Protocol? Out of the question. Rock concerts against the left? A joke.
“The left has won, across the board, and has become the happy medium. When we search for a definition of what left means, we can draw on an impressive array of theories. Leftism is a worldview, as well as a way of explaining the world and how everything is interconnected. Most of all, however, it is a feeling. A person who lives a leftist life is living with the appealing awareness of being in the right, in fact, being right all the time. In Germany, leftists are never truly called upon to justify their views. In fact, their views have become the dominant views, not within the population, which stubbornly adheres to its prejudices, but among those who set the tone and in circles where they prefer to congregate.” (emph. mine)

  27. From Mark Levine’s Liberty and Tyranny:
“The Statist in America is no less resolute than his European counterpart but, by necessity, he is more cunning–where the European lurches and leaps, the American’s steps are measured but steady. In America, the Statist understands that his counter-revoultion must at least appear gradual and not revolutionary–sometimes even clothed in the flag and patriotism–lest his intentions become too obvious and thus alarming to his skeptics.
“For the Statist, the international community and international organizations serve as useful sources for importing disaffection with the civil society. The Statist urges Americans to view themselves through the lenses of the those who resent and even hate them. He needs Americans to become less confident, to doubt their institutions, and to accept the status assigned to them by outsiders–as isolationists, invaders, occupiers, oppressors, and exploiters. The Statist wants Americans to see themselves as backward, foolishly holding to their quaint notions of individual liberty, private property, family, and faith, long diminished or jettisoned in other countries. They need to listen to the voices of condemnation from world capitals and self-appointed global watchdogs hostile to America’s superior standard of living. America is said to be out of step and regressive, justifying the surrendering of its sovereignty though treaties and other arrangements that benefit the greater ‘humanity.’ And it would not hurt if America admitted its past transgressions, made reparations, and accepted its fate as just another aging nation–one among many.”

  28. Follow-up to previous post.
    …-
    “Opposition to anti-aid campaigner grows
A swell of opposition is building in the aid world to a new protagonist who has thrown down a strident challenge to the rock stars and liberal economists who have long dominated debate over foreign assistance to developing countries.
Galled by the ease with which Dambisa Moyo, a Zambian economist and former investment banker, has risen to prominence this year, activists are circulating detailed critiques of her ideas and mass mailing African non-government organisations to mobilise support against her.
Yet it is proving hard to suppress the hyperactive graduate of Oxford and Harvard, who pops up weekly in a new capital to promote her book Dead Aid – the title itself an affront to rock star Bob Geldof’s Live Aid campaigns.
The former Goldman Sachs strategist has become something of a phenomenon. The economist hit the New York Times bestseller list in April, was named this month on Time Magazine’s list of the 100 most influential people and has been appointed to the board of brewer SAB Miller.
Within days of reading about her, Paul Kagame, Rwanda’s president, flew Ms Moyo out to address his government. Col Muammar Gadaffi, the Libyan leader, invited her to Tripoli this month.
Ms Moyo argues that official development assistance has fostered dependency and perpetuated poor governance. She proposes a blend of commercial debt, microfinance, fairer trade and investment in its place.
Her ideas are not especially new. But the publicity she has attracted has posed challenges to an industry accustomed to having the most vocal campaigners on its side.”

  29. Agreed, Revnant Dream: thanks EBD. I find it interesting that the
