  1. My so-called “giant red herring” argument about the effects of abortion on our society (I won’t even get into the short-term and long-term effects abortion has on individual women) are anything but.
    As a public policy, abortion has been a total disaster. It seems clear that Alex has never heard the expression — let alone has a concept of what it might mean — “No [wo]man is an island.”
    I agree with many other posters that simply because the law says abortion is a “right” doesn’t make it a right. What makes taking an innocent human life “a right”? It’s a convenience for women who are unhappy they are pregnant. (There is hardly ever a justification, in these days of advanced technology, for a medically “necessary” abortion to save the life of the mother.)
    The law’s an ass.

  2. As for new teachers not being hired and schools closing, Alex is simply ignorant of the facts. I know of a board of education in q very large Canadian city which has declared over 100 jobs redundant and has sent out a directive saying that new teachers will not be hired.
    We’re going to see more of this, not less, as the schools built during the baby boom and the financially flush ’70s, when boomers started paying taxes, become increasingly empty.

  3. Ahh, the progressives.
    They go ape-sh1t over medically supervised, time limited water-boarding designed specifically to elicit information to save lives, but don’t think twice about mass extermination of healthy human fetuses.
    The mind boggles.

  4. We already have cases where ‘the primary perpetrator’ cannot be prosecuted – those who commit suicide. Yet, we, at least on the books, punish those who help people commit suicide.
    The organism of which you speak is not ‘fundamentally parasitic’, and it’s debatable at what point it acquires awareness. Fundamentally, it is a human being at an early, and dependant, stage of development. But I digress, I was correct to assume that you’d leave the science behind and delve into the philosophical side of things. I’m well-conditioned by pro-choicers and I leave religion out of it. Can you do us a favour and leave your religion/philosophy out of it?
    In 99 % of cases, the ‘rights’ of the individual in which the unborn human being is growing (just for the sake of argument, let’s call her the ‘mother’) are not of the same weight as that of the child’s right to life. They are lesser rights (if rights at all) – rather, they are inconveniences.
    Although the uterus is certainly a part of a woman’s body, for whose benefit does it exist?

  5. Gord Tulk;
    So if there it is discovered that there is a gene that causes homosexuality would aborting pregnacies if the feteus was found to have that gene be okay?
    Would the same lobby groups that are cheering this decision cheer that outcome or would they picket physicians who perform them for that reason
    An excellent point hard to miss by all but the blind & deaf. Hey even they would be considered defects. Wonder if they think this is so great?
    Next it will be no option weather you have an abortion or not. Once the State owns you, the only real rights you have is what they allow. Acording to the fashion of the day.
    Glad you picked this up GT.
