The Sound Of Settled Science

With all due respect Mr.President … (pdf)

We, the undersigned scientists, maintain that the case for alarm regarding climate change is grossly overstated. Surface temperature changes over the past century have been episodic and modest and there has been no net global warming for over a decade now. After controlling for population growth and property values, there has been no increase in damages from severe weather-related events. The computer models forecasting rapid temperature change abjectly fail to explain recent climate behavior. Mr. President, your characterization of the scientific facts regarding climate change and the degree of certainty informing the scientific debate is simply incorrect.

  1. The heartbreak of global warming hit Calgary again last night. Not as much as over the weekend but its still awful white out here.
    I can remember when it was warm in April.. about 20 years ago, but it sure is a hell of a lot colder this year.

  2. I could never figure out how the blazes one determines sea level changes of a few cm having to deal with wave action, tides, water temp, changing currents, location and a slew of other factors that would obliterate the ability to measure such slight differences.
    as far as the hollyweird set, ain’t it just peachy how THEIR resource fingerprints are the size of a small valley compared to the avg earthling living in the real world.

  3. “Got that folks? In one hour and eleven minutes, from the time Kate posted this to the time Alex made his statement, he claims to have checked into the specific backgrounds of close to 100 scientists.”
    Add “statistics” and “probability” to the list of things you’re ignorant about, bob.
    eyore:
    “I believe that his conclusion that their views are invalid because they are not climate scientists is, in itself, invalid”
    Great, next time you’re sick, go see your mechanic. Qualifications don’t matter right?
    “his conclusion that he’s right because everyone hates him is also invalid”
    That was your conclusion, not mine.

  4. Eeyore;
    Oh sure, I realize that it is possible to do those number of background checks, or at least a large enough sample of them from which to draw a reasonable conclusion, in an hour or so.
    It’s also likely if not probable that one who claims to be hated by everyone, and is seemingly proud of it, suffers from a pronounced personality disorder that could explain both being so anal as to actually do that and/or making sh*t up in order to win an argument.
    Who knows? I sure don’t.

  5. Free Thinker hit the nail on the head. Who really cares if not every Ph.D. signatory carries the weight of a fictional “certified climate scientist” badge with their arguments. This hasn’t stopped the IPCC. No point in playing by any other rules but the one’s they use to indoctrinate the populists.

  6. Eeyore;
    Your quite right about frenchie77’s post. He’s spot on in his understanding of how science works. Climatologists require data to run through their computers, the very data produced by other scientific disciplines. Without that data, climatology is dead in the water.
    Climatologists claim to know the effect that elevated CO2 levels will have on the biosphere. Who is better placed than a PHD in biology to weigh in on their conclusions? Who other than a mathmatician developed the formulas input into climatologists computers? Who other than a mathmatician should critique them?
    It’s nice to see Alex so enthusiastic about science, but evident he hasn’t a clue how the process works.

  7. Thanks Alex? You see, it really isn’t hard to say “Who knows? I sure don’t” Give it a try sometime. You’ll be pleasantly surprised to find out that it would make you feel an even bigger man than you already do.
    You can get a quick start by answering something I said namely, “Climatologists claim to know the effect that elevated CO2 levels will have on the biosphere. Who is better placed than a PHD in biology to weigh in on their conclusions? Who other than a mathmatician developed the formulas input into climatologists computers? Who other than a mathmatician should or can critique them?”
    Give it a go. There’s no shame in admitting that you were wrong about something so plainly and evidently true. Trust me, you’ll feel every bit the man you feel now, even better.

  8. Lots of retirees on that list, and many mystery PhDs. How do we know these guys didn’t major in english?
    Now, for some strange reason, can somebody explain why the glaciers are all melting, as is the permafrost, and invasive species keep moving further north?
    Must be some libruls running around with blowtorches. They’re just out to get the oil industry, take away your hummer, and win grant money I guess.
