Y2Kyoto: Take The Earth Hour IQ Test

Canvassers will be in your neighborhood on the evening of March 28th, collecting the darkened addresses of the really stupid…

One provincial British newspaper wrote this week: “Saving the planet could be as easy as switching off the lights in South Tyneside, green campaigners say.”
It will take more than the metropolitan borough of South Tyneside, population 152,000, to solve global warming. Even if a billion people turn off their lights this Saturday, the entire event will be equivalent to switching off China’s emissions for six short seconds.

…and the easily distracted.

A United Nations document on “climate change” that will be distributed to a major environmental conclave next week envisions a huge reordering of the world economy, likely involving trillions of dollars in wealth transfer, millions of job losses and gains, new taxes, industrial relocations, new tariffs and subsidies, and complicated payments for greenhouse gas abatement schemes and carbon taxes — all under the supervision of the world body.

1. I was going to ignore this EH nonsense, but the more I see of it the more it makes sense to save up things that have to be done anyway, that require energy, for that time period. The power plants will not be shutting down for an hour, The peak load will be lowered slightly because of the people taken in by the campaign. Might as well make use of the excess power available during that time to do things that I would be doing anyway. I have laundry that needs to be done, some baking in the oven, plus other cooking, and a few other things. If I did them now, I would increase the peak load slightly. If I wait until tomorrow night I can use the idle capacity and thereby help the environment. Make sense?

2. As it will be 8.30p.m. somewhere in the world I plan to leave everything on for 24 hours. And, years ago we were told by a power company guy that it takes more energy to turn lights on frequently than it does to leave them on when leaving a room. When there are real power outages, lasting for several hours, notice how long it takes to get your heat back up.
Power plants keep running, business keep open, street lights keep working, radio and tv stations keep operating. I agree that most if not all the idiots supporting earth hour, should hold their breath for the hour. But, in the past I have suggested they do this 10 minutes every hour 24/7 if they were really serious.
As for the Outhouse, we got rid of ours in the 60s when power come thru our rural area, and we dug a well. Will never go back. My grandmother always said the best invention ever was indoor plumbing.

3. Good one “Nemo” @ 2:45 PM! Do you really suppose they thought that one through? Sniff, sniff.

4. Great post MaryT, I concur.
Most of the idiots pushing this nonsense have no conception of what it was like to live in the era, not that long ago, when many rural people didn’t have indoor plumbing, electricity and the conveniences that came with them.

5. devin “look at me!” johnston is a blubbering narcissistic socialist idiot. he goes to my law school and is a douchebag who begs for anyone to pay attention to him. just look at his pathetic website. http://devinjohnston.ca/

6. Mary T, I agree about indoor plumbing. I lived in Edson for a couple of years back in the ’40s without indoor plumbing, and it was a major ordeal to trek out across the back yard through knee-deep snow in the middle of a minus 45 degree night to visit the outhouse. Never again!
I was told many years ago by an engineer from Lynn Lake, MB that they recommended that people there never turn off their lights because it drastically shortened the life of the light bulbs due to surge switching currents. Electric power generated for the smelter and provided to the locals was so cheap in those days that the cost of keeping the lights on 24/7 was just a few cents, which had to be balanced against the cost of replacing the light bulbs several times more frequently.

7. I’m attending a beer festival at a big convention centre while earth hour is going on! Lots of carbon dioxide to be emitted for sure -all while enjoying tasty beverages – yum yum!

8. When the econuts did the same thing last year power plants noticed a drastic spike in power usage. Apparently shutting off all those appliances and lights caused massive power surges and in the end these loopy leftards caused more pollution. Listening to them is akin to going into an insane asylum and asking a crazy person to give you a root canal.

9. These greenies failed.
The correct answer is: The food chain.
“The foot bone con-nected to the (pause) leg-bone,
The leg bone connected to the (‘) knee bone,
The knee bone connected to the (‘) thigh bone,
The thigh bone connected to the (‘) back bone,
The back bone connected to the (‘) neck bone
The neck bone connected to the (‘) head bone
Oh hear the word of the Lord!” (kids)
Greenies answered:
““My dog ate my homework””.

“Ocean iron fertilization CO2 sequestration experiment a blooming failure’
“Earlier this month, the controversial Indian-German Lohafex expedition fertilised 300 square kilometres of the Southern Atlantic with six tonnes of dissolved iron.
This triggered a bloom of phytoplankton, which doubled their biomass within two weeks by taking in carbon dioxide from the seawater. The dead phytoplankton were then expected to sink to the ocean bed, dragging carbon along with them. Instead, the experiment turned into an example o f how the food chain works, as the bloom was eaten by a swarm of hungry copepods.
*
The huge swarm of copepods were in turn eaten by larger crustaceans called amphipods, which are often eaten by squid and whales. “I think we are seeing the last gasps of ocean iron fertilization as a carbon storage strategy,” says Ken Caldeira of the Carnegie Institution at Stanford University.
While the experiment failed to show ocean fertilization as a viable carbon storage strategy, it has pushed the old “My dog ate my homework” excuse to an unprecedented level.”

10. The fools at Cool’s Law have edited my post over there, and I don’t mean the content. I have expressed my outrage at messin’ with my personal handle and we will see if they comply. They may be turned into a laughing-stock yet again.

11. “Human Achievement Hour Saturday: Light bulbs not dim bulbs
The Competitive Enterprise Institute has initiated the celebration of ‘Human Achievement Hour’ (HAH) between 8:30pm and 9:30pm on March 28, 2009 in response to and coinciding with Earth Hour, a period during which governments, individuals, and corporations have agreed to dim or shut off lights in an effort to draw attention to climate change.
Unlike Earth Hour, the purpose Human Achievement Hour is to salute the people who keep the lights on and produce the energy that helps make human achievement possible. Many organizations and average folks around the world will show their support for human achievement by simply going about their daily lives.
The celebration of Human Achievement Hour has already garnered sneers and criticism from some of those supporting Earth Hour—they have even had the HAH Wikipedia entry deleted. In spite of all this, we believe that it is important that people around the world participate with us in acknowledging the achievements accomplished by the human race.
Please check out these links to the great new video and other info below, and help us spread the word about HAH–and let’s utilize the social web to do so.”

12. Plan for tommorow evening,
– Late supper involving the oven and stove top.
– TV on (nada new there!!) Xbox 360 downloading extra game content and the PS3 downloading a few game demos.
– Full load in the washing machine and dryer.
– Gaming PC crunching a 3 or 4 gig video file.
– Laptop……surfing?
– any thoughts for anything else?

13. I’m disappointed that I haven’t seen massive “dark sky” campaigns by the AGWs, greenies and other freakobats. Directed and shaded municipal and commercial lighting is proven to reduce municipal electrical costs by as much as 58%, with the distinct benefit of us amateur astronomers being able to actually see the night sky.
Perhaps they can also explain why David Miller’s limo likes to idle on the street waiting for Miller after a public foot kissing he’s attended.

14. I can not believe those idiots at Fool’s Law have censored the name “Mohammed”. What kind of racist, discriminatory, condescending, patronizing, pretentious shit is that?

15. Unbelievable! First the self-righteous, sanctimonious, bigotted, hypocritical, onctuous, oh-so-liberal, progressive adolescents at Law is Fool censor my name “Mohammed”
Then they so charitably and altruistically
banned me from the site.

16. Be sure to reduce your power consumption as much as possible BEFORE and AFTER Earth hour to maximize the difference.

17. What is the point of all this again?
To raise awareness of global warming?
What rock would you have to be living under not to have heard the endless bleating about AGW?

18. What could possibly be more fun than mocking simple minded and empty gestures like Earth Hour??
Let the carbon spew.
Oh BTW – watched Man Tracker tonight … two clowns from Toronot in the Rockies.
One an adult skater boy wanna-be the other his fat douchebag friend…… all freekin mouth …. yet sucking wind in the first minute…. best comedy on TV in years.

19.
And in a couple of years when we need to move it we will have a very nice green square of grass in our lawn.
A humorous note:
A few years ago several researchers/photographers were visiting my place, the Stone house, Barn and other stone buildings built by the family of “Parkers”, stone masons of Southern Sask.
One of the researchers noticed an old outhouse that was not made of stone and told me it was strange that they could not find any stone outhouses…. I told him to try moving a stone outhouse.. dumb shit didn’t know that the old timers just dug a new hole..

20. Ok, so we’ll be using the self clean gas oven feature, while BBQ-ing supper, doing laundry, having the wood stove on, and making rice in an electric rice cooker. Likely watching tv or listening to music. Oh and will give the dog a bath. And will have the all the lights on for that hour.
May have to open the windows if the heat from the wood stove, laundry, gas oven cleaning, dog’s bath, and rice cooker make it too warm inside.
Then do the dishes using the dishwasher while I dry the dog with a hair dryer, can’t have the ‘lil beady-eyed one catching a chill.
Oh and almost forgot the main show!
We’ll be burning all that cardboard that they wouldn’t take away with the blue box program all winter – good thing we have a 12ft diameter fire pit…gonna make it bark on start up.
:~P

21. Posted on WUWT in a comments section:
” Rik Gheysens (00:11:30) :
Here in Europe, one is anxious that power plants could not react to a total loss of demand on the grid at 8:30 PM local time. If the success would be overwhelming, the whole European net could black out! Automatic switches would shut down power plants, which would require many hours to come back on line.
The most delicate moment would be at 9:30 PM local time when all participants will turn on their lights again. Then, the production of electricity would be not at all in line with the sudden increase in demand of electricity.
Will the WWF-action trigger a total black out in the European net? That’s the question.”

22. Earth Hour doesn’t matter, you see, so what we all do is, we make an extra special effort to try ruin it. We plan in advance, we obsess about our sabotage fantasies… See how little we care?
That’s awesome. Another great thing, I think, is when you see schoolkids trying to pick up litter in a neighbourhood, you go out and dump your garbage can in the park! Do they really think they’re going to solve the litter problem with an hour’s clean-up efforts? Liberal sucky schoolkids. The only way to show them is to undermine their little symbolic sham! That’s the really brave and productive way to stand up to, uh, political correctness and, um… something.

23. “when you see schoolkids trying to pick up litter in a neighbourhood, you go out and dump your garbage can in the park! “
That’s an excellent analogy! If they’re anything like the schoolkids here, they’re dumping their crap on the ground the other 364 days of the year….

24. One thing we can do is teach children to turn off lights in rooms when they are empty. Hopefully they will then carry this habit into adulthood.

25. Cool, fig – I live across the street from a public school (literally), and on the route to a high school. From their hands and their mouths – all crap, all the time. Even the local liberals out walking their dogs, can’t seem to take their nicely bagged little doggie stool specimens home with them, preferring to leave them under my truck. Then there was the soccer mom bringing little johnny to the evening soccer practice, who through little bobby’s diaper on to the street beside her minivan, and was going to drive away until I suggested she had forgetten something.
I know her lights are out…

26. “One thing we can do is teach children to turn off lights in rooms when they are empty. Hopefully they will then carry this habit into adulthood.”
No, tranio. Your thinking has been corrupted by such evils as facts, decency, and civic-mindedness. When you see a child perform such an empty gesture, you should instead go turn on the lights in every other room, turn on both the heating and the a/c, dump your garbage in the public park, and then fire up the snowblower and lawnmower and let them both idle for the rest of the day. Then log on to the internet and brag about it all. It’s the only way to bravely strike back against the people who want to destroy our precious freedoms by turning off lights!

27. Sarcasm is effective. Very effective.
It usually causes the flaky to see the folly in their actions. Humor, mischief is a powerful tool.
But the Flakiest of the Eco Fanatics cannot even recognize sarc. They are so blinded by their beliefs. By the religion, no, the Kult of Kyoto.
I would bet that Kate and virtually every sda supporter is environmentally responsible. Does not spew garbage, disposes of hazardous material properly, and uses less hydrocarbons in their daily lives than the Righteous Latte Liberals – think Gore and Celeb executive jets and mansions.
In case the Kyoto Kult has not noticed, Kyoto (and Earth Hour) is about carbon dioxide. Those who turn off their lights will effect our climate no more than those who don’t.
1) CO2 is a very minor GH gas.
2) CO2 makes up only 0.03 percent of our atmosphere.
3) Increasing CO2 conc will lead to virtually no more GH effect as it is already saturated in that bandwidth.
4) There is no runaway, tipping point. (Just a Tipper Gore, heh!). The earth has been much warmer in the past with much higher CO2 levels following, not leading. The only thing that happened was … Paradise ! Lush plant growth, great climate, ect.
5) The United Nations Kyoto computer models have been proven wrong. The earth has cooled not warmed the last ten years.
6) Those who predicted this cooling, because of our sun’s activity (or lack of) are being proven right. (We just hope this cooling doesn’t progress to the point of 2 kilometer thick glaciers over Canada. AGAIN !! – as ten thousand years ago.
7) Warmongering is a media construct, as was Y2K, SARS, Alien Crop Circles, Frankenfoods …
Kate is bang on with her mocking of those who believe (as in ‘belief’) in Carbon Dioxide Armageddon.
