Report Cites Political and Racial Bias At Justice
Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick J. Leahy (D-Vt.) said the findings confirm “some of our worst fears about the Bush administration’s political corruption of the Justice Department” and highlight the need for “new leadership.”

BOGOTA: At least four people were killed and 12 wounded in an attack by leftist FARC rebels in southwestern Colombia, authorities said.
Three children and a woman were killed and others, including several children, were wounded in the attack on the town of Roberto Payan, said Fabio Trujillo, an official from the area.
“These are preliminary numbers, remote areas could have also been affected,” he said.
Trujillo said the rebels from the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia appeared to have tossed several gas cylinders filled with explosives, hitting at least three spots in town.
A government spokesman said the guerrillas fled without being captured by authorities.

Minister of Industry Responds to Nortel Networks’ Restructuring Under Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act
OTTAWA, January 14, 2009 — On January 14, 2009, Nortel Networks announced that it is seeking an order to initiate a court-supervised restructuring under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act (CCAA) from the Ontario Superior Court of Justice. The Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Industry, made the following statement:
“Nortel Networks is known as a leader in the field of information and communications technologies and for its research and development in Canada. The decision to file for creditor protection was made by its Board of Directors in an effort to turn the company around. The Government of Canada appreciates the importance of the telecommunications industry to our economy and will continue to work with Nortel during its restructuring through Export Development Canada (EDC). EDC has agreed to provide up to $30 million in short-term financing through its existing bonding facility and is open to discussing with Nortel post-filing financing in conjunction with other financial institutions. It is important to note that Nortel is filing for court-supervised restructuring under the CCAA, not bankruptcy. Nortel has stated that it has every intention of emerging from this restructuring under the CCAA as a viable business. We will monitor its progress closely.”
The CCAA allows for a court-administered process that gives corporations the opportunity to restructure their business so that they can continue to be a viable and sustainable entity contributing to Canada’s economy.

Maclean’s did not mention it.I went and looked through ‘blog central’s’ topics for the last two days and nada. Surprising,no but,cbc politics did have Ms. O’malley on for a few weeks talking about the importance of blogs,and what they covered.Then as now,SDA is irrelevant to those who are on the cutting edge of Canadian opinion shaping….But,if someone was to post a comment that could be construed as ‘offensive’ to these demi-gods,that would be news. Sad.

The call from some scientists for authorities to stop criminalizing transmission of HIV/AIDS, and to consider it a public-health issue.
First of all, here’s Dr. Mark Wainberg in 2000, or 2001:
“Anyone, those who attempts to dispel the notion that HIV is the cause of AIDS are perpetrators of death. I, would very much, for one, like to see the Constitution of the United States and similar countries have some means in place that we can charge people who are responsible for endangering public health with charges of endangerment and bring them up on trial. I think that people like Peter Duesberg belong in jail.”
And in 2007:
“People who argue that HIV does not cause AIDS have formed clubs, published newsletters and freely disseminated terribly harmful information on this subject through the Internet and other widely available channels. Attempts to shut down these sites or to prevent the dissemination of denialist literature are routinely dismissed on the grounds that dissenters have a right to express their views and that the public interest is better served by the defence of freedom of expression.”
“The latter sentiment appears in a letter to us — researchers on the front lines of the global AIDS crisis — from the provost and vice-president of a well-known U.S. university, after we complained that one of his faculty members had written a book based on an HIV-AIDS denialist position. The university should have shown leadership on the issue and dismissed the faculty member from her position, rather than hiding under the cloak of academic freedom.”
Jailing people for dissent is not nice! Without regard to whether they’re right or wrong. The attitude toward intellectual freedom could use some work too. Everybody thought stress caused ulcers until 1984, when two Australian doctors proved that a bacterium named helicobacter pylori was the culprit. Who’s to say AIDS couldn’t end up in a similar situation?
The AIDS dissenters (of whom retrovirologist Dr. Peter Duesberg was, or is, a prominent one) were active in the 1990s, although I haven’t heard much from them lately. Their thesis was that HIV is a harmless virus, and that other things cause AIDS (syphilis in one of its many disguises was one suggestion; however another was that AIDS drugs can cause AIDS, which is circular and therefore ridiculous). They claimed that the HIV theory was never proven, and that if you asked about it, or where to find proof, you would be met with stonewalling. Whether any of this is right or not, I really don’t know.
A couple of other points:
The old “this isn’t an X issue, it’s a Y issue” is a common mischievous misdirection, a leftist favourite to confuse an issue. In this case, it’s a criminal issue first and foremost, because it involves one person possibly endangering others’ health through their actions. That said, I have no particular opinion right now about whether this should be considered a criminal act or not.
And “public health” is surely another anti-concept.
Speaking of Macleans, my husband and I got a subscription last year because of Mark Steyn. We decided we wouldn’t renew—because of Mark Steyn, who’s no longer around. (And why would he be? I’m sure he’s just wiped the Canadian dust off his feet and moved on—to a more civilized place, out of reach of the Canadian thought police.)
So, I was surprised to get a postcard from Macleans, informing me that they would use my credit card number to renew my subscription for me: isn’t that considerate of them?! “This notice is to advise you that the credit card charge for your next year of Macleans will be processed next month.” Oh no, it won’t! I’ll be phoning the 1-888 number to tell them.
A suggestion for people who have Macleans subscriptions and are thinking of cancelling them: why wait for spring, do it now!
I am a relative new comer to your blog and really only found out about you from participating on Ezra Levant’s. For me the greatest thing about your blog is that the regular commenters here are the biggest and best bunch of smartasses on the internet. I never fail to get a lung bruising laugh reading the comments. Keep it up all of you.
