Senior Ignatieff insiders are tantalizingly whispering to Bourque that the Toronto MP is having grave doubts about supporting the shocking Dion coalition bid, now labelled by many as the “Separatist Coalition”, given the defining support it has from both the BQ’s Gilles Duceppe and former PQ Premier Jacques Parizeau.One longtime senior Ignatieff backer, under condition of anonymity, confided that “Michael is in a tenuous situation and he is feeling a lot of heat from caucus colleagues and constituents alike. Frankly, we think we got snookered by Bob Rae on this one”. It nets out to this, according to this longtime Liberal and echoed by many other key backroom players: ordinary Liberals across the country, the card-carrying bbq-ing door-knocking envelope-stuffing phone-banking kind who make up the backbone of the party and who would need to be counted on to support his leadership aspirations, are vehemently rejecting the Dion argument that a deal with the separatist Bloc Quebecois is in the best interests of Canada. “Bullshit”, said one Liberal power-broker, who was quick to point out Dion is tilting at Liberal history for the sake of a short stint at 24 Sussex. “Dion is nuts”, he told Bourque, “I am ashamed he is leading the party of Laurier, Pearson, Trudeau, and Chretien – my God, Chretien, the guy who poured out his federalist heart against Rene Levesque’s country-killing forces so long ago – I am ashamed Dion is selling us out.”.

I can only laugh while the press contemplates Harper’s future and tries to report on his caucus and/or the public having enough of him. Mark my words, they will eat crow on this.
Never trust a Liberal, and Ignatieff is no exception.
Do not buy into this or let down the pressure on this Tripartite coalition for 1 minute or we will be stuck with them for what will feel like forever.
Well maybe not forever, but it may take that long to pay for their socialist experiments and reverse the damage.
The media is pretending this is a constitutional crisis that can be solved by political scientists, pundits and constitutional lawyers. This is to maintain the fiction that the Bloc is part of our democracy and not a fifth column trying to destroy our democratic Confederation any way they can.
The real constitutional crisis is the presence of the Bloc with voting power in Parliament. Their sole and only purpose is to destroy Canada and as long as they remain in Parliament they will keep at it until they succeed. In fact they might just have done it this time.
Canada elected a majority Conservative government, Quebec voted for the Bloc. There is no precedent for that scenario in our history. Dion and his axis of disruption are contributing to the dissolution of Canada while pushing us to economic ruin.
We cannot have a nation with these people in Parliament. They must be excluded and they must not have a say in the government of Canada. Quebec can either have them or Canada, they cannot have both.
And Dion has the (tiny) nads to suggest in Question Period that it is Harper who is sewing the seeds of disunity. What an utter idiot. The man is completely delusional.
I rather doubt this putsch will succeed for several reasons. The ‘coalition’ only has 114 seats as opposed to the Conservatives 147. Not enough seats even with the Bloc ‘support’. Jean would be foolish in the extreme to give the reigns of power to such a conglomeration.
Secondly I doubt that the non-confidence vote will pass. If Liberals are good at one thing besides stealing money it is reading polls. There is no support from the people and unless the Liberals hope to never face the electorate again a good number of them will abstain or vote against their own party’s semi leadership.
Actually the one thing that has me wondering is after this falls apart how long will Jack Layton’s leadership of the NDP last. This may well be his last stand as well as Dion.
Is there not something in our parliamentary system that says that all MPs must swear allegiance to the Queen or something like that?
Duceppe and the BLOC do not view the Queen as their monarch. How can they even be the Queen’s Loyal Opposition when they do not swear allegiance?

even the MSM piece I was watching said he was “incomprehensible”. A big word for the MSM, and damaging, again, too.
He -hardly- looked Prime Ministerial at that point, at all, more like a spoiled brat that just had his toy taken away.
I hope the borderline minions saw that and had a re-do over their ‘support’ for Mr bean and his unholy alliance with the dippers and the separatistes.

The cbc is so far in the tank with these sharks.I think that a memo was sent around that the Bloc cannot be referrred to as ‘separatists’,just like the crazed killers in the Middle East were not to be called ‘terrorists’.Also,this coalition being referred to as lib/ndp supported by the Bloc is misleading,very misleading. It is a coalition of the Bloc,NDP,and Liberals.The ndp/libs do not have the numbers to form a coalition that would be given consideration. If we survive this coup attempt,the Conservatives should wield a big broom and clean up the cbc,using both ends if necessary.
The CBC’s behavior here is the last straw. Once the Tories get their majority, the CBC needs to be the second item to go after the $1.95 a vote.
It would be too funny if Jack Laydown pulled a swifty on Dion and recommended that the GG call an election (yes, Harper has lost confidence of the house, no, I don’t think we can form a government). He would leave the libs hanging out to dry big time, with a big, wide lefty playing field for the NDP to take.
Oh, but didn’t he sign an agreement with Dion? And that is more meaningful than Dion’s statement to the Canadian electorate that he would not form a coalition with a party that would damage the economy (after all, Dion’s word is his bond, right??)

Jack could relegate the libs to the Michigan landfill, along with the rest of Toronto’s garbage, and go down in history as the man who elevated the NDP to first, opposition, and finally, federal government, all with one quick additional round of “bait and switch.”

Agreed. This shameful behavior by the Liberals and their enablers in the MSM is truly beyond the pale. When the dust settles, I hope the Liberals go bankrupt, the Conservative get a majority, and the CBC is gutted.

Dont know if its something he makes up or it is somehow based on fact. But considering he posted it first on Aug 27th he is looking very, very prescient. HMMMM
the GG picks up her iPhone and calls Dion over at Stornoway. Dion, tying flies in the attic, answers his portable phone, and the GG tells him what just went down with Harper. She asks him if he thinks he can form a government. Dion harrumphs he’s ready to go to an election and is highly confident of winning a decisive majority. “No, you dummy”, responds the GG, I am asking if you think you can form a government now. glasnost we really don’t have a clue what will happen. They are probably given a set amount of time to clean out their desks and the Harper’s will have to pack their things and move into Stonaway. We just don’t know. None of us have ever encountered any of this before. This will definitly go down in the history books.

WELL SAID! This media campaign has really been bothering me. Mike Duffy is good, and fair, but so many journalists are manipulators who dislike any politician who doesn’t kiss up to them.
The day after the election, CTV news was asking when Harper would step aside.
Two thoughts:
1. I sensed from the very beginning that Michael Ignatieff was VERY uncomfortable with non-violent coup d’etat. And it’s very telling at what times he’s NOT in the House of Commons.
2. Bob Rae stated very clearly on Charles Adler’s show that if he were to win the Liberal leadership campaign next year that he would NOT hold a public election for another TWO years.
Personally, I prefer Dijon grey poupon to Dion brown caca.
Agent Smith – I saw Margaret Wente today too and I heard her say that Tories want rid of PMSH. She is a presuming fool and she deserves wrath from all of us! Anyone watching from afar has to wonder how stable our governments really are when a rag-tag trio of malcontents can plot in secret to overthrow a duly elected government.
The only reason for doing it is for power and to get their grubby hands on the taxpayers money while selling their souls and the country out to Separatists.
They can rail on and on about Harper trying to topple the Liberals over Adscam with support form the Bloc, not the same thing at all. Bloc votes count in the HOC for all parties trying to bloc Bills etc. Harper never signed any pact with Separatists to run the government and never would.

Just an update, my aunt, who works in Stephen Harper headquarters has heard that the Conservatives have in place a campaign bus and plane and are set to go. Not sure if this is the way they think the ball will bounce with M.Jean.

Yes the Queen can change her rep anytime she likes and can do so on the advice of the PM in country.
However, the liklihood of Harper asking (please dont) is small. The liklihood of the Queen acceeding to such a request is even smaller. She is a smart lady and knows how to keep the Crown out of politics. I am sure she may find a way to get her advice to the GG adn would no doubt offer her advice to the GG if asked. Consulting wise and experienced people is a good thing for an inexperienced journalist to do.
For Jean this is a ceremonial post, while she stops being a journalist, for the Queen, its her job.
The opposition has put the GG in a position they never should have, after they misread their constitutional textbooks. If they read them correctly they would have seen that the GG acts on advice from the PM ONLY, including once he loses a vote of confidence. there are NO discussions with the opposition.
She can accept or reject his advice.
Rejecting his advice is constitutional but extraordinary. One of her jobs is to maintain continutiy and legitimacy. Legitimacy is a judgement call, best obtained through an election. She would need a really good reason, to not accept the PM’s advice to go to the people.
That being said, if the opposition had rejecte the Throne Speech and had the pact in place post election then this might have been different. But the opposition took too long, ran their campaign specifically rejecting this option.
MOST importantly, the rather predicatble reaction that is happeneing outside of the OT-TO-MON bubble should be enough to make her realize that making the necessary statement “IN MY JUDGEMENT” is probably not a wise one. Her safest, most sane response is “I HAVE ACCEPTED THE ADVICE MY PM”, which is what she does everyday. It si what the Queen does everyday, there can be advice and warning but she cannot lose if she accepts the advice of the PM.
Now the Speratists will claim this means the system is broken, but hard for them to say so when Ms. Jean and especially her husband are seen as sympathetic to them.
Dion and Layton have started something they cannot contain. They are out of touch with the country outside the OT-TO-MON bubble. Problem is there is the likelihood of a counter reaction in Quebec….what boneheads. (I know not all on this board will agree with my final sentiments)
I’ll be interested to see what effect all of this has on Tory fundraising. My guess it will go through the roof, if even I am considering a donation.

This whole fiasco is just a continuation of the gotcha politics. With the CCCP, media and trolls desperatly tryng to spin this to their favour.
PMSH knew this coalition was forming in the backrooms. He took a calculated risk with his economic update designed specifically to draw out his opponents. That he backed down is irrelivent. They took the bait and now have to proceed in the public eye.
Time will tell how that works out for these clowns.

If the caolition gets to govern I will become increasingly angry and hostile towards it. I think they are acting prematurely. I think they are acting like greedy immature adults. I think their primary interests are self serving. In their zeal they are trying to believe that they are putting Canada first. I think they are putting Canada last. The conservatives have been making clear headed decisions. They have not thrown all at a stimulus package in a blind frenzie. We need the level headed approach being taken by the conservatives. The auto industry has not been left out. The government has been consulting with the industry. The budget was to be finalized on January 27/ 2008. Shouldnt the government set some goals and know where they stand, budget wise first and review their budget as things progress. This strikes me as a solid wise approach. It is far better than saying ” the sky is falling” so lets throw 30 billion at it and see if we can fix the damage later. This just does not seem responsible.
For the game being played with the bloc. This should never happen. It is totally and morally wrong to negotiate with them and to put them in such a strong veto position. They will only manipulate to seperatist advantage. The coalition will hand them leverage to the disadvantage Canada including all of the Canadians in Quebec who did not vote for a seperatist party.
I hope the GG refuses the coalition and a new election is called. I would like it if the GG could call for all concerned to grow up and put Canada first.
The Bloc mandate is to work against Canada. They will ultimately put Canada last.
I would like to say in addition to my previous post. The conservative government has consistently reminded Canadians about how important all of Canada is. They have a policy of consistently being aware of the North.
I have only heard other parties speak about protecting Canadas territory when the subject came around.
The conservatives seem to have a vision that includes all of Canadas territories. The other parties do not exude a visionary confidence overall. In my opinion they too easily loose sight of the bigger picture. Their vision seems very limited. There is nothing visionary about this coalition. I know that the majority of Canadians deserve better than this knee jerk short sighted stupidity.
Bravo to James!! – I agree with you 100%. Always have thought this. Could NEVER understand why we put up with this travesty of having Separatists in the Federal Parliament. We should have had parlimentary and Senate reform years ago.
If we have to go to the polls again, maybe this time we should insist that these reforms be on the platform of a Conservative party. Time for these people to go to Quebec and stay there or be a part of this country for good and all. Enough!
