  1. You got a doe?
    mmmm, deer sausage.
Now if you ran down a buck, snapped it neck, ripped it’s throat and drank its blood, then I might be impressed.
    /kidding

  2. A nice bit of venison makes the Christmas Holiday Season complete. Enjoy.
( must try some before it’s been frozen some day, I know)

  3. I got one this morning too! Unfortunately it was with the front bumper of my car :>( It just makes me a little more determined to fill a tag this year and help reduce the population of these “rats with antlers”. Mmmm deer sausage….

  4. Without a picture, it didn’t happen.
(although I’d tend to believe any lady packin’ heat)

  5. Congratulations Kate!
From the land of the giants.

Three days of sitting and still hunting Northern Ontario and nothing yet. Our camp has done very well this year but I have yet to click off the safety.
Heading down to N.Y. State this weekend where the hunting is usually easier.
Bowhunting back in Ontario after that and then the icefishing season begins.
I ate the last of the venison Jalepeno/cheese weiners yesterday.
Happy Hunting for those of us still at it.

  6. But…but…but you can’t kill an innocent deer like that evil Sarah Palin. Women don’t kill deer!

  7. For a minute I thought Kate was in a cat fight with Kady O’Mally!

If that were the case the headline would have been:

  8. Once you’ve got one with a flintlock, there’s nothing else. Like the difference between bait fishing and flyfishing or a Cessna and an Ultralight.
It’s a real rush. And the venison tastes just as good.

  9. Bang on Kate!
… pardon the pun, couldn’t help myself… and Yum!
Great read on the thread LOL
Spotted a four-point deer early Sat. morning.
But since we were at home, still in our pj’s, coffer still being made, we only shot it with a camera.
    ;~)

  10. I could have had a multi point buck saturday nite, at 45 mph in a buick, in the fog…
but I had just completed a brake job…
and the reflexes are still ptetty quick…
    good one Kate

  11. Large doe, about 30 yards, bolt action Savage 30-30, no scope. Lung shot, died quickly, little spoilage.
So, a good morning, and it’s back out for another (hopefully).

  12. Kate, you must have been taught by an old-school meat hunter. A no-frills rifle and cartridge to get the job done and a nice tender doe. Shot placement in the boiler for a quick kill, gives a good blood trail if needed, and minimum meat wasted. Well done.
    Talk about empowering!

  13. Great, I feed ’em, you shoot ’em. But, as mentioned earlier, a gunshot by a responsible hunter is far better than a bumper shot or worse a bumper glance where they die slowly. As it is, it is hard to understand why populations remain so huge as fragile as these animals are. Their legs are no stronger than porcelain china. Our “Gang of 9” as my husband terms them, always have one member limping around with broken or sprained limbs. Right now we have a “Gang of 15.” They’re hell on the bird feeders. Cracked corn for the main event, bird feed for dessert.

  14. Let me fix up that story for you Kate:
The deer was running full tilt through the trees about 150 yards away. I trained the sights of my trusty 30-30 and followed until the deer came to a small clearing. With perfect timing, i expertly placed a shot right in the boiler room, and the deer dropped like a stone.
Sheesh, no hunt is complete without a story like that.
Blatant lying is quite acceptable, dare i say even expected.
Anyway, I wish you continued good hunting.

  15. Happy hunting, K.
Looks like you’ve got yourself quite a few days’ worth of free meat on your plate there… I’m envious… I actually gotta pay for mine! Mebbe I oughta get meself a shootin’ iron and fetch my own meat for a change. Save a lot of bucks by wasting just a couple… And, hey, I just had a brainstorm… why not grow my own veggies? Wow! Who’d a thunk such a smart idea? Now, that’s something them big city liberal folks ought to be told about… they’ll crap themselves silly at the brilliance of the concept of country livin’ to save money on groceries, a cool idea seeing as food’s gone up in price quite a bit… and then tell ’em that your grub ain’t got no carbon footprint, save for the deers’ farts! ๐Ÿ™‚

  16. They always taste better when you bag them yourself. Any thoughts of renaming the site ‘Large Dead Animals’ for the rest of the season?

OTOH, you could starve to death trying to hit one with a flintlock and actually bring it down. Like the difference between a good kill and having to beat it to death with the buttstock… ๐Ÿ™‚
Iowavette, maybe you should quit feeding them and allow them to reach their natural range level.

  18. The doe got off easy, when you consider it could have gotten the complete butt kicking that Matt Good and Paul Wells received.

  19. Ah, yes. I am reminded of an outstanding deer hunting song by an east coast favourite, Evans & Dougherty, singing “The Second Week of Deer Camp”. Perhaps our friend Vitruvius could share it with us; or tell me how to do same.

  20. Well I evened the score today. Me, 0, Bambi, 1 still roaming. I also needed only one shot to achieve this.
    Back at it tomorrow.

  21. Our dear season ended this past weekend. I have been shut out these last two seasons. We saw a lot of dear this year but they were all in the back of other peoples pick-ups. As punishment we had to eat vegetarian this evening for supper.

  22. Good shooting Kate
My week went well – two less to run out in front of cars in Ontario and still have bow season for another month

  24. Nice shooting Kate…..Real…not so much.

p.s. Wherever Real is taking ESL classes should be applauded…that’s some improvement in mechanics even if the underlying motivation is suspect.

  25. Where are you people hunting?
I had my doe within 30 minutes of going out, we came back and dressed her, had lunch, went to town for a couple of errands, back out and took the second within the hour – all within a mile of the house.
But this is a pretty cool place to hunt whitetails….

  26. Got any elk around there? mmmmelk roast with thick, rich dark gravy. Beats the hell outta the safeway chicken I’m having.
