“These two entities — Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac — are not facing any kind of financial crisis,” said Representative Barney Frank of Massachusetts, the ranking Democrat on the Financial Services Committee. ”The more people exaggerate these problems, the more pressure there is on these companies, the less we will see in terms of affordable housing.”

  3. CBC Reporter Neil McDonald caught in shameless lie once again:
McDonald tells viewers that McCain supporters shout for the death of Obama.
Here’s my complaint to the Ombudsman.
    Dear Mr. Carlin;
On your CBC Newsworld program broadcast of Sunday, Oct. 19th, ‘reporter’ Neil McDonald, in a piece featuring former Secretary of State Colin Powell, re-stated a scurilous lie saying that supporters at McCain rallies had called for the death of Barak Obama.
This is completely untrue and the most cursory investigation by McDonald would have prevented the CBC from again being shown as an unreliable and biased source of ‘news and information’. I cannot convey my disgust with McDonald. He has consistently shown an anti-American and especially anti-Republican bias in his reporting. He was called on the carpet by you recently and I’d say he’s had enough strikes. It’s time for Neil McDonald to be told to seek new employment as he is bringing the CBC into greater disrepute with each assignment.
    http://www.timesleader.com/news/breakingnews/Secret_Service_says_Kill_him_allegation_unfounded_.html
SCRANTON – The agent in charge of the Secret Service field office in Scranton said allegations that someone yelled “kill him” when presidential hopeful Barack Obama’s name was mentioned during Tuesday’s Sarah Palin rally are unfounded.
The Scranton Times-Tribune first reported the alleged incident on its Web site Tuesday and then again in its print edition Wednesday. The first story, written by reporter David Singleton, appeared with allegations that while congressional candidate Chris Hackett was addressing the crowd and mentioned Obama’s name a man in the audience shouted “kill him.“
News organizations including ABC, The Associated Press, The Washington Monthly and MSNBC’s Countdown with Keith Olbermann reported the claim, with most attributing the allegations to the Times-Tribune story.
Agent Bill Slavoski said he was in the audience, along with an undisclosed number of additional secret service agents and other law enforcement officers and not one heard the comment.
“I was baffled,” he said after reading the report in Wednesday’s Times-Tribune.
He said the agency conducted an investigation Wednesday, after seeing the story, and could not find one person to corroborate the allegation other than Singleton.
Slavoski said more than 20 non-security agents were interviewed Wednesday, from news media to ordinary citizens in attendance at the rally for the Republican vice presidential candidate held at the Riverfront Sports Complex. He said Singleton was the only one to say he heard someone yell “kill him.”

  7. RE: Colin Powell. he’s always been a political general. Hackworth called him a decent ‘Perfumed Prince’. I doubt that there’s more than a handful of people who will be influenced by his ‘decision’.
I expect this had more to do with his sex life than anything, given that Powell’s wife is a strong Democrat, and has probably been campaigning for Obama for months.

  8. Guys, guys…I see you got the Conservative talking points for this week: climate change is a threat and we must spend money to stop it, even if the money goes to other countries. As we learn more about Stephane Dion, it has to be said that Canada dodged a bullet when the voters rejected the Liberal Party.
OK, so maybe it wasn’t all that close when the results were tallied, but Stephane Dion’s behaviour since the election loss begs an important question. Just who thinks Dion would have made a good prime minister? I mean, the guy’s a nutter!”

  14. Stephie Dijon has done his job, whether he realizes it or not, and that is to take the fall for the Lieberal downfall and being linked to the old gang of thugs. This will make way for the next coming of a Canadian Obama. “Obama’s Carbon Ultimatum
The coming offer you won’t be able to refuse.
Liberals pretend that only President Bush is preventing the U.S. from adopting some global warming “solution.” But occasionally their mask slips. As Barack Obama’s energy adviser has now made clear, the would-be President intends to blackmail — or rather, greenmail — Congress into falling in line with his climate agenda.”
“The strategy is most notable for what it says about the climate-change lobby and its new standard bearer. Supposedly global warming is the transcendent challenge of the age, but Mr. Obama evidently doesn’t believe he’ll be able to convince his own party to do something about it without a bureaucratic ultimatum. Mr. Grumet justified it this way: “The U.S. has to move quickly domestically . . . We cannot have a meaningful impact in the international discussion until we develop a meaningful domestic consensus.”
Normally a democracy reaches consensus through political debate and persuasion, but apparently for Mr. Obama that option is merely a nuisance. It’s another example of “change” you’ll be given no choice but to believe in.”

  19. Spengler, Sharansky’s mistaken identity
Reasonably, or not, we want to live forever. The first people to believe that God promised that it would endure forever became the standard against which all nations must measure their condition. From Ireland to Afghanistan, the identities of all tribes and nations became a response to Israel: Christianity offers a New Israel, Islam a competitor to Israel, neo-paganism a Satanic parody of Israel. The trouble is that Jewish national identity is not one national identity among many national identities. There is only Jewish identity, and a set of responses to Jewish identity…

Frank J. Gaffney, Jr., Spreading the wealth
During last week’s debate, Republican presidential candidate John McCain struck upon a theme that polls suggest is resonating with American voters: His rival, Barack Obama, is determined to engage in the sort of redistribution of wealth that has long been the hallmark of the radical Left. As the Senator from Illinois famously told an Everyman questioner named Sam Wurzelbacher – who will forever be known as “Joe the Plumber”: “I think that when you spread the wealth around, it’s good for everybody.”
The days following the third Obama-McCain debate have been filled with invective, much of it aimed at obscuring the extent to which Senator Obama actually embraces a redistributionist agenda…

  24. Interesting – it’s like two parallel worlds colliding.
There’s the political world, which, for the Liberals, has only one agenda: Power. And the idealistic world, which, for Dion, has only one agenda: Truth.
Dion’s Truth is in his theories, of The Green Shift, a document which is astonishingly naive in its ‘Christian Charity’ theme of Taking From the Rich to Give to the Poor. His definitions of ‘Rich’ are ‘the Industrialists’.
Then, there’s his idealistic notion of Truth being vested in theories, in academia and not in the plough and the shovel.
Put the two together, and he sees no need to step down and allow the Liberal agenda of Power, rather than Truth, succeed. Indeed, it’s almost immoral for him to allow such an agenda of Power to exist.
Meanwhile, the Liberals who have no knowledge of or interest in such an irrelevance as Truth or Ideals, also have no knowledge of the realities of Canada’s ploughs and shovels. They are trapped in a fictional world of their own, based around the notion of an Elite Set of Rulers who govern the peasants.
Fascinating – two parallel worlds. Both fictional.

  25. Another indication of China’s growing success:
    “China’s Islamic Crackdown has Begun”
Several months ago I predicted that there would be a huge crackdown on Islam in China. This was right after Muslims in China had bombed some buses in China. Now the crackdown has begun as hijabs and Islamic beards have been banned, along with Muslims praying in public. Also students and government officials who are Muslims were not allowed to fast during the month of Ramadan as they were forced to eat. China has now joined Italy as the leaders in the worldwide battle against Islam . I doubt that many Muslims will be wanting to move to China anymore.
    “China Restricts Islam”

  26. Jim Yardley, China Enacts Major Land-Use Reform
After days of uncertainty, the governing Communist Party on Sunday announced a rural reform policy that for the first time would allow farmers to lease or transfer land-use rights, a step that advocates say would raise lagging incomes in the Chinese countryside.
The new policy, announced by Chinese state media, is a major economic reform and is also rich in historical resonance, coinciding with the 30th anniversary of the land reforms enacted by the Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping, which were considered the first critical steps in the policies that have fueled China’s rapid economic growth…

  28. John Steele Gordon, Speculators, Politicians, and Financial Disasters
Fueled by easy credit, the real-estate market had been rising swiftly for some years. Members of Congress were determined to assure the continuation of that easy credit. Suddenly, the party came to a devastating halt. Defaults multiplied, banks began to fail. Soon the economic troubles spread beyond real estate. Depression stalked the land.
    The year was 1836.
The nexus of excess speculation, political mischief, and financial disaster—the same tangle that led to our present economic crisis—has been long and deep…

  29. And remember, China allows private property rights, something we in Canada still don’t have.
China has actually never allowed a monotheistic religion to gain control. Such a practice enables idolatry, idealism and also ‘groupism’ and the Chinese, closely connected to the pragmatism of the land, and local regionality, didn’t follow such paths.
So, it isn’t simply a reaction against Islam; it’s a rejection of monotheistic worship and groupism – an act that separates people into separate Identity Groups. The first identity is your region, which is a part of China. China has been trying to make ‘China’ the first identity, but the regionalism in China is too strong for that – and that includes the many regional versions of Chinese. But even so, this regionalism isn’t worship of a singular Power.
The Chinese may have lots of spirits and interactive Forces of action (yin/yang; dark/light; cold/hot) but are cautious about monotheism or a Singular Agential Force.

R.R. Reno, Brain Science and the Soul
We often hear that modern science requires us to reject traditional Christian views of the human person. The argument goes something like this: If we can see the physical process by which ideas are associated or feelings felt or decisions made, then surely we must admit that human beings are nothing more than physical entities. The concept of a soul, so we are told, is irrelevant.
Well, it turns out that science now points us in a different direction…

The raccoon dogs—a breed native to east Asia whose fur is used to make trim on coats and other clothing—were fed a product that contained the chemical melamine and developed kidney stones, said Zhang Wenkui, a veterinary professor at Shenyang Agriculture University. All of the dogs died on farms in just one village.”

  33. Remember how the Media went on and on about Harper taking part of the summer off to sulk when he didn’t get the election results he wanted? What about Dion the sulker?
Not sure if Dion is a McGill professor – he spent most of his teaching years at the Université de Montréal and before that at the Université de Moncton. He also took a sabbatical at the Brookings Institute in the U.S.
I will only sympathize with Dion when he apologizes for all the names he called Harper during the election. As an academic he set a terrible example of how to argue against an opponent.

  34. ET,
I think China realizes the danger of Islam and is reacting to it. The Christian church is doing quite well there, with some restrictions, but not a lot of interference.
Islam, on the other hand, is a subversive and militant political ideology. Unlike the west, they realize this and are doing something about it.
I was in Hong Kong during the Olympics and believe me, the Chinese were just waiting to crack down on Muslims after the outrageous suicide bombings and killings. Dozens were murdered.
The bulldozers are out and rightfully so.

  35. Dion is staying until May.
Blamed the fact that the CPC had more money and thus were able to distort the message, on what would have been the biggest tax cut in Canadian history, and that’s why they loss. Liberals, arrogant moreso even in defeat.

  36. Who can feel any sympathy a wiener who blames the Conservative ads for his defeat? It’s all the fault of Conservatives having money to buy ads, he and his party are otherwise perfect and have the right to govern no matter what!
He also states the Liberals HAVE to win the next election! Holy cow, what arrogance.
So we now know how POWERFUL ads are, they can take down a wonderful leader and his wonderful party.
Let’s start the advertising fund pronto.

  37. Exactly. The funds for those ads came from the individual contributions of tons of Canadians. This is not even third-party advertising, so where does Dion get off in saying this was not kosher.
To say that the Liberals didn’t indulge in negative ads is ridiculous. Not to mention the N.D.P. which painted Harper as the future leader of a fascist government in its French ads.
The Liberals had all the time in the world to explain their programme and Dion and his candidates couldn’t do it. Their web site to which we were constantly and only referred was shallow and unworkable.
I have to wonder if he is staying on for the extra money as Leader of the Opposition for a few more months.

  38. Nicole Gelinas, Storm-Proofing the Economy
We can’t prevent Wall Street turmoil, but we can make it less destructive
…The reason for the crisis is simple: when you lend money to people who can’t pay it back, they won’t.
All right, it isn’t that simple. But it isn’t inexplicable, either…

  39. I think that Dion is staying on because of those two parallel worlds that I mentioned above.
Dion lives in one world, a fictional world whose agenda is the Discovery of Truth and the Dispensation of Truth. He believes he’s found Truth in his Green Shift.
The Liberals live in another world, equally fictional, whose agenda is: Power. That’s all. They are indifferent as to how this is achieved. Lies, manipulation, bribes are all acceptable and even necessary. The electorate, understood as witless peasants, require such handling.
So, Dion is staying on. Why? Because he has discovered Truth. And he wants to dispense it. His agenda, I suspect, is to defeat the Conservatives at budget time. This will cause an election, and Dion’s Truth, just like his Clarity Act (which he still claims is his rather than Harper’s idea)…will win.
    Heh.
