Home Sweet Home

What recession?

“Saskatchewan is expected to lead all provinces in growth both this year and next year with overall GDP rising 3.9% and 3.5%, respectively, because the province is enjoying very high prices for most of its key exports, including grains, oil, potash and uranium,” the RBC forecast says.
Although commodity prices have come off recent highs, they are expected to stay at historically high levels and support business and household spending, RBC says.

It’s amazing what happens when the chains of socialism are removed from an economy. On the other hand, it’s no surprise what happens when socialism (Fannie and Freddy) is allowed to mix freely with capitalism.

Yeah. Cuz like, before, all the oil in the ground was like being surpressed by communists. We made that oil more better cuz we don’t take no shit from those asshats in like big places like Toronno and Saskatoon.
    Riders rule!

  2. . . . all the oil in the ground was like being surpressed by communists . . .

  3. So let me see if I’ve got the conservative talking points straight on this one:
    1. Anything that is bad about the economy is not Stephen Harper’s fault because he has only been in government for a little over 2 years and it’s a global economy and the banks are greedy.
    2. But in Saskatchewan, Brad Wall is entirely responsible for all successes and growth even though he’s been in office for less than a year.
Did I get that pretzel right?

  4. We’ll fight you in our West Nile infested rivers, we’ll fight you on our fecal choloform infested beaches, we’ll fight you on our boarded up South Portage Avenue.
We will never rest until we have buried Saskatchewan in the ash heap of history.

No. Ted, those would simply be straw men, invented by you alone.

  6. @ Ted,
I have to agree with you. However Wall is making important changes that reduce investment problems win Sask. Other than lowering taxes and reducing barriers there is not much governments can do to produce growth.
However just elect a socialist government to see how quickly you can reverse the growth. As we have seen, there is a lot governments can do to harm an economy.

  7. Did anyone else pick up on Mr. Dion’s message to Liberals in Ontario, Quebec and Regina Saskatchewan to join him forming government. What happened to the rest of Canada.
If this doesn’t give the constituents of Regina the gumption to vote out Ralph Goodale nothing should.
Stephan Dion in his own little world.

  8. I, for one, am truly happy for Saskatchewan’s good fortune. I worked on a number of energy products in the province and found it to be a great place…especially the people and the Rider’s games. Unfortunately, if the Liberals get in with a minority and form some sort of working relationship with the NDP, you can kiss that prosperity goodbye. Dion and his pocket picking thugs have already said that about 13 billion of his 18 billion rip-off will come from Alberta and Saskatchewan. This will, of course, be funneled into Ontario and Quebec to satisfy all the socialist voters that believe big government is the answer to everything.
As with that idiot Trudeau’s NEP your economy will collapse overnight. We in Alberta can speak from experience. The last time that happened we only managed to elect one separitist member to parliament. This time it will be a lot more and you guys may want to join us. After all, if Dion and the Liberals are envious of our good fortune, the rest of the world could care less. They just want oil and potash.

  9. Hmmm, let me see.
In B.C. the dippers were in for almost 10 years and we went from booom after Expo 86 to a have-not province by the end of their term. In comes the liberals (actually the old socred bunch with some cons and some libs)and by the end of the first term things are booming again-and continue to be although the current money crunch is making it tougher.
    Coincidence, I think not.
    Horny Toad

  10. I think that Ontario had a petroleum industry, back in the 1880’s. Towns like “Petrolia”. look it up. They still do to a certain extent, natural gas under Lake Erie. Ha! You got “dirty” oil companies working right under your noses! Best shut them down, eh?

  11. Ted,
I would like to remind you that our economic growth here in Saskatchewan started a few years BEFORE the Saskatchewan Party took office. The real beginning was when NDP finance minister Andrew Thompson implemented the Sask Party’s platform of cutting corporate tax and removing the capital tax.
It is interesting to note that during the 2003 provincial election the NDP repeatedly stated that said tax cutting policy would not work -of course they used far more colorful rhetoric – then they implemented the policy almost verbatim.
As far as PMSH and the conservatives are concerned in regards to the world economy, we are merely suffering from the fall out of failed loans by Freddy Mac and Fannie Mae. No doubt about it.
If you have a substanciated argument to the contrary, I would like to hear it.

  12. 2. But in Saskatchewan, Brad Wall is entirely responsible for all successes and growth even though he’s been in office for less than a year.
Hmmmmmm…… that would mean ….. hold on , let me think this through to a logical conclusion …….. there’s gotta be someone I get to blame for all the failures and stagnation ?

  13. OT
Check out todays Ekos tracking poll…
    Cons 35
    Libs 24
    NDP 20
    Green 11
    Bloq 10
Just think where these numbers would be without all the negative sh@t thrown out by the MSM every day trying to give Dion a boost! As for Nanos he is just another Liberal flake!
Check out their website…they have some very postive things to say regarding the Conservatives.

  14. I just wish Harper had said to that Lenin look-alike Taliban Jack when he was yelling about Harper’s economic plan absence durint the debate.
“Let’s see Rae under your banner, the NDP, almost destroyed Ontario and it took a Conservative government to fix it, Saskatchewan was a have-not province with a diminishing population and is now booming under a Conservative government and BC has finally got rid of 10 years of your NDP socialism and is starting to be a success again. And you have the absolute gall to ask me about our successful economic performance that has us at the top of the G7!”
Don’t know why Harper doesn’t use that statement now. It would put that socialist POS in his place under his communist flag.

  15. Not only is Dion forecasting a recession, he is guaranteeing it if he gets into power.
    Well played Steffie.

  16. when LIBS talk about in recession, they mean ON and QC. that’s their canada. sorry, you guys don’t count.

Spot on. The right whinger mentality is not unlike the rooster taking credit for the sun coming up in the morning, except the rooster has a firmer grasp on reality.

  18. Am hot and cold on Don Martin, but I think he gets it right (and echos Kate) when he says:
The problem for the Conservatives is they now face an electorate that isn’t behaving rationally, one that seems eager to lash out at political authority believing somebody should pay a heavy price for financial losses beyond any prime minister’s ability to control.
    Source
Some other good (and some hopeful) nuggets in the article, mostly after the first half, which is about Harper’s references to his mom.
My comment is only mildly off topic. I still remember Dion’s comment in Saskatoon that the devastion of the Saskatchewan’s economy by the Green Shaft would be compensated for by more global warming research at the U of R.
P.S: Saw a really good CPC ad tonight. Women with small child, her investment statement, and TV on. Exactly the type of ad that is needed.

  19. the MSM polls remind me so much of the exit polls in the USA 8 years ago.. gave a clear Dem. majority. they announced a Dem victory by about 4 pm that day. the actual people with jobs didnt vote till after 4 . in other words , the working class, the guy that makes a buck , the actual taxpayer doesnt get to participate in the vote or even most often in the polls because he has to work to keep both the entitled ruling class and the duff sitting underclass awash in tax money.

  20. Dave, Harper CAN’T put that POS in his place. He needs as many voters to migrate from the Liberals as possible. This isn’t about winning the election, it’s about crushing the Liberal brand. A stronger NDP performance is a poorer Liberal bank account.

  21. MORE advertising…..where are all the PC ads? Seen that ad as well tonight the one with the woman with the small child and her investment statment. Pretty good.
It might be a little early yet to blow their wad on ads yet, but hit them hard already!

  22. **Chris Bryden
If your wondering where all the PC ads are, the answer is that they are history, along with the last leader of the Progressive Conservative Party. You probably mean the CPC ads, once known as the Reform Party, then the Canadian Alliance, but more currently, the Conservative Party of Canada. Not to be confused with the PC party, Brian Mulroney, Joe Clark, Kim Campbell, etc.

  23. I’m glad you guys in SK are enjoying good times. May they go on for a long time.
Here in Ontario things aren’t that pretty, though. There’s hardly a day going by without some plant closing down and a few hundred more people thrown out of work.
It hit very close to home too. Two years ago my daughter made 22$ an hour until her plant closed down, then she found another job that paid 17$ and lost that one too. Now she works 2 low-paid jobs to make ends meet.
    But that’s a one-job gain, right?

  24. We have all seen what some minor tinkering with the Oil and gas royalty structures in Alberta has done – ie a drastic downturn in that economy.
God help us if Dion and his energy/enviroment pit vipers gain power and implement their masochistic policies. Forget recession, and skip right on over to depression.
Ah, but I suppose that would suit them just fine because then the entire national economy would be circling the bottom of the toilet bowl – bringing us closer to the total meltdown happening in the rest of the world. Dion always did like to make a name for himself in the global arena.

  25. GreenNeck:
I was born and raised in Saskatchewan and moved to Alberta several years ago to get a job. That was the nature of the Saskatchewan economy. Many from the Maritimes have done the same because of their economy. As such, maybe now it’s time for people from Ontario to do the same instead of expecting jobs to be created for them. A little entitlement mentality, perhaps?

  26. I understand the economy in Ontario is hurting, and will more so will the auto sector, that sends 80% of their supply to the U.S.
I think we all understand under a recession in the U.S, the manufacturing sector is going take a beat down, the worst.
Increase the time that can be spent on unemployment, maybe up to two years, THATS what its for! In that time companys can wait the storm out, retrain or retool.
Its a perfect time to get a new handle, because China has been taking a bigger chunk of the pie every year, and its to the point we have no fork. Its their pie to be had. Just wait until they’re pumping our cars, we simply can’t compete.
Without queston, Harper is going to form government again, Ontario should use this oportunity to get as many MP’s in to office they can, their going to need them more than anyone.
Dion and Layton running around like chicken little and their mantra the world is coming to a end, is helping no one.

  27. Yes …. Things are going well in Sask. after years of socialist stagnation and decay. However all that the Saskatoon StarPhoenix cares to print are editorials slamming the Sask. Party for contrived misdeeds or letters to the editor from disgruntled, sore loser socialists who long for the days of being a have-not province.

  28. lb:
I hear you, and have been there too. I moved to Ontario from eastern Quebec in the 1982 recession. I know a lot of people who moved West for jobs. Leaving your home, family and friends, even to improve your lot, is not an easy thing to do.

  29. Manny et al: Actually, Saskatchewan should have boomed for the past 10 or more years along with Alberta; some say even more so. The problem was a little thing called socialism, which spooked off investment, gave unions unfettered access to government, and crushed growth as a result. The nationalization of the potash industry years ago ensured that large cap investment stayed away … and without large cap investment, no province can thrive. Saskatchewan was held back by socialism … just like every single socialist run economy on this earth. Sure, they seem to boom for a short while (Sweden), but they depend in the end on massive immigration and even then they die. Nanny should stick to roads and schools, and let the productive kids run business.

  30. Keep that potash coming. There are significant spin-off enterprises that make a buck getting it to market. And, let me offer my best wishes to Saskatchewan for it’s excellent business climate and booming economy. The ripple effect has wide-ranging impact for both our countries.
