Producer Paul Manson and I, along with cameraman Callan Griffiths and soundman Ben Adam, were sent here on assignment to report on climate change and the Arctic for an upcoming broadcast. The primary news peg — and one reason for our visit — is that for only the second time in recorded history the Northwest Passage is ice free, effectively clearing this shortcut between Europe and Asia.
This marks their third week stranded by bad weather.
Oh c’mon Kate. They will just say they took the wrong turn, and were not actually in the “Northwest Passage”. They actually hit the reduced ice pack around the North Pole!!
Maybe they could use Elizebeth May up there. She could part the waters.
I worked at Resolute and Grise Fjord in 1969. Historically in late August and early September these 2 ports receive their yearly supply of food and fuel by ship. The ships always get in to these two sites every year.
If you wait until middle or later September the ice will probably take over and ships get stuck in it and they hope for an ice breaker to get them out.
So far with all this Kyoto global warming fanaticism I see that nothing has changed up there since the 1960’s. I’ve witnessed this a couple of times as I had a employment contracts stationed in Resolute.
RL, any media types ever contact you for first hand experience, knowledge on the Arctic ?

They also haven’t got a clue about history. The NWP was successfully navigated in 1906, 1937, 1942, 1940, 1944, 1957, 1977, and 1984.
If you don’t learn any history, historical events will happen right in front of you all the time I guess.

Gee, well I read the article and maybe I missed it. But not a mention of how they passage was open, or if it was closed, or what the weather (temperature) was like. Just that they got weather, hmm I think we get “weather” everyday everywhere. They did mention they saw polar bears (yes, plural), which is quite amazing actually since they are near extinction as some would have us believe.
On this theme, the Oct 2 Ottawa Citizen has a piece by Canwest writer Margaret Munro about the vanishing Arctic sea ice. It talks about this being another near record melt year, how this is ahead of the computer projections, blah, blah, blah. It is a wonderful piece of spin by the climate alarmists to disguise the fact that less ice melted in 2008 than in 2007.
And Munro bought right into it. Funny how the media never write about the growing sea ice extent in the Antarctic. No global warming there.
Remember this people, if it is cold that is weather, and weather is not newsworthy, if it is warm, that is climate and climate is newsworthy. It is not that difficult and I wish you wing-nuts could keep it straight.
A story in the NP today worries about the polar bears losing their hearing because of noisy airplanes. Isn’t the cracking sound of ice breaking up louder than an overhead motor?
