  1. Very sad! One of my favorite memories as a child was watching football with my late father, cheering on “The Little General” and the rest of the Roughies. He was indeed one of the best!

  2. I met him at the 06 Grey Cup when I wrangled him for a radio interview for CITI FM. I didn’t want to wash my hand after he shook it I was so thrilled- and I was 46 years old! What a class act.

  3. Losing our “Little General” saddens me because he was a hero of my childhood. But more than that he was a very decent human being.
    My condolences to the family.

  4. Never a huge fan of football, but Mr Lancaster was one of those people that, for whatever reason, seem to become part of a nation.
A class act in a world where we are running out them far too fast.

  5. Ron Lancaster would have been a great politician. He demonstrated class, leadership, integrity, courage, common sense, the ability to think on his feet and fairness.
Contrast this great man to our current crop of “leaders”… the elitist, irrational Dion, the smarmy, weasel-like Layton, the shrill bovine May, the separatist Duceppe.
Why do the good die young while the perennial idiots seem to be around forever?

  6. Very sad. What a terrific player he was! The days of Lancaster were the days when a quarterback stayed with the team (you liked). That was when I watched the CFL. These days Ron would have played with a different team every year or two. However … Go Riders!

  7. RIP Ronnie. Rider Nation has lost one of its founding fathers.
    Condolences to the Lancaster family.

  8. My first football game was one my grandfather took me to at Taylor Field, where calgary was the visiting team. I was from Calgary and was haunted by the PA system all afternoon: “Lancaster to Reed; gain of 6. Lancaster to Reed, first down.” As much a Calgary fan as I was, I always respected and admired Ron Lancaster. He was a great sport in the deepest sense.

  9. When I was a journalism student in Ottawa, I interviewed Jo-Anne Polak, then GM of the Rough Riders, and afterwards she let me wear his helmet, which was in her office. That was a treat.
    Godspeed, Ron.

  10. Soccermom, you took the words right out of my mouth. That was what I have been thinking about all day. The special memories we all have with our fathers, thanks to Mr. Ron Lancaster. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

  11. Oh Ronnie’s not gone. He’s just in another huddle waiting to call #34 again.
    RIP Ron.
We join your family in their (our) loss.

  12. When you reach my age, 72, you have fond memories of past sports greats….Parker, Etcheverry, Patterson, Johnny Bright, Sawchuck, Howe, Richard and many, many others. Back in the 50’s and 60’s when I was a great Alouettes fan and Lancaster played for Ottawa then went to the western conference, I always hoped he’d be traded to Montreal. Though that never happened, I always thought he was a great and exciting quarterback.
    God speed Ron Lancaster.

  13. There are always people who’s persona seems larger than life and Ron Lancaster was one of them. Not the tallest, fastest or biggest player around, he managed to become a household name out west, bringing a whole new meaning to “Rider Pride”. Yet, in spite of becoming a CFL hero, Ron Lancaster was exactly what he seemed, a down to earth, honest gentleman who was respected by everyone on both sides of the ball.
    He will be missed.
