I ran across a late 1920’s national geographic which was doing an expose on Germany after WWI. What struck me was that the Nazi party was mentioned in one sentence. Within a couple decades, this small group had grown to engulf Germany, Europe and endangered the world.

That video is rather alarmist actually, and very simplistic. Don’t believe everyting you see or read. Part of the problem in Europe is ghettoization caused by socialism and dirigisme. Even in countries close to 100% Muslim, there are sparks of light: Ayaan Hirsi Ali and Alhamedi Alanezi to name a couple. Iranians are a lot less “Islamic” than they appear. And apparently most Afghans are happier with the troops than with the Taliban. Certainly the west needs to grow a backbone to deal with extremists, but I really think it’s an unholy connection between Islamic leaders and communists that is a big part of the problem. People like Ayman al-Zawahri are as much Marxist as Islamic. And communists never met any kind of societal discontent they didn’t want to inflame and exploit. Both sides probably think they are manipulating the other.
Ultimately, most people just want to be left alone to pursue their own lives and achieve their own happiness, and that includes most Muslims. This video will be decried as “hate speech” yet the thesis behind it is very strong. Islam is extremely supremacist and intolerant of anything but “true Islam”. Islam is therefore perpetually at war with non-Muslims and between sects.
Secularists make a major error in thinking that religion is only in the realm of the personal. They do not understand the power of a collective religion which demands the public square for itself. Even with massive evidence for the rabidly violent and intolerant nature of Muslims on the Internet, they deny that there is a problem.
I suspect this is due to anti-Americanism blinding leftists. Because the Americans need an enemy and are using violent Islam as their latest enemy, they wrongly conclude that Islam must not be so bad. Islam is bad and the fact that the Americans are currently using this religion as their current enemy does not remove the truth that Islam is supremacist and will destroy most of what secularists and leftists hold dear if they win this war.
There is a great war coming against Islam as a whole. Political Islam has written much and said much about how the Islamic dream for humanity is incompatible with Western ideals and Western progress.
One other mistake that is made is to parallel Muslim minorities with Jewish minorities. I’ve merely highlighted current Islamic persecution of Christian minorities in a political blog (without comment on my distain for Islamic thought) and been equated to Keegstra and other anti-Semites. What is ironic is that my position and the position of this video is akin to people fighting an Islamic version of the KKK. Those of us who support this video are the good guys who want to maintain a tolerant and open society against a group of people who hold to a religion which can not stand any dissent at all. Consider that comedians, journalists, and a host of others will not criticize Islam. WHY? Because you’ll get killed. What other group in the world is treated this way? NONE.
When most comedians are afraid to criticize a group of people for fear of being murdered, then people must ask why we are allowing more of them to immigrate to Canada. Currently it is not accepted speech to advocate blocking immigration of Muslims is Canada, but once they get to a higher percentage point and more political murders occur, Canadians will then realize that videos like this one are exposing the ugly underbelly of an ugly religion.

An ideology, as I see it, is a set of interrelated beliefs which one abides profoundly, often to the point of chauvinism. An ideology provides a kind of coherence and consistency to people’s world views(interrelated beliefs about human nature, about freedom, social order, government, living a good life, possibly about an after life etc.). Everyone is ideological, most of all those who claim not to be ideological (what they are really claiming is that their ideology has so successfully propagandized itself so as to seem so “natural” and “true” that its not even “ideological” anymore). Anyway, my point, before I had all kinds thing incorrectly attributed to me, was that this video argues that Islam is ideological. Fine, I accept that. So what? Being a Catholic is a whole way of life. It is ideological. Penny, I’m sorry, the Pope may not any longer have much sway over the Italian parliament, but his infallibility is still central to Catholic ideology.
Irwin, I never even intimated that free market ideology is responsible for Islam. In fact, I said quite the opposite. Many who fear monger around Islam are often also free market advocates. I was simply reminding you that they least of all haven’t anything to fear. According to their free market ideology, unrestrained self-interest will be magically corrected by the invisible hand. I’m simply asking that they have faith in their free market ideology. Of course protect the country against attack, but have faith that any Muslims who decide to participate in our society will have their bad ideas “efficiently killed” by the free market.

I ran across a late 1920’s national geographic which was doing an expose on Germany after WWI. What struck me was that the Nazi party was mentioned in one sentence. Within a couple decades, this small group had grown to engulf Germany, Europe and endangered the world.
I think you are blind to say “Me thinks you folks worry too much.”, given what is bring written and said throughout the Muslim world, by Muslims in Canada/USA, and especially amongst Muslims in Europe. Mainstream Muslim leaders are saying things that are as bad as Hitler wrote in Mein Kampt. Only idiots would not be worried about political Islam and its murderous intent towards, Jews, Christians, Hindus, Buddhists, all other religions, gays, women who don’t want to wear a sack over their heads, and any sort of independent thought. There is a global totalitarian movement which is quite vocal about its intend and since most Islam leaders are doing little to combat it, a wise person would conclude that they have sympathies towards it.

It’s not being reported because the truth about widespread Islamic violence and supremacism might offend Muslims. It is like not reporting on the KKK because it might offend Christians. Go ahead and offend this Christian, if there is something ugly in my religion I want to hear about it and correct it. Sadly, this is rarely the reaction you get from Muslims. That video is rather alarmist actually, and very simplistic. Don’t believe everyting you see or read. Part of the problem in Europe is ghettoization caused by socialism and dirigisme. Even in countries close to 100% Muslim, there are sparks of light: Ayaan Hirsi Ali and Alhamedi Alanezi to name a couple. Iranians are a lot less “Islamic” than they appear. And apparently most Afghans are happier with the troops than with the Taliban. Certainly the west needs to grow a backbone to deal with extremists, but I really think it’s an unholy connection between Islamic leaders and communists that is a big part of the problem. People like Ayman al-Zawahri are as much Marxist as Islamic. And communists never met any kind of societal discontent they didn’t want to inflame and exploit. Both sides probably think they are manipulating the other.
Ultimately, most people just want to be left alone to pursue their own lives and achieve their own happiness, and that includes most Muslims. As in any other community, there are those who grow up twisted in some way, and they cause trouble. Deal with them in the usual firm ways. But don’t assume all Muslims are like them. They aren’t.
As for the comments above, I don’t think Bill Stewart knows what capitalism is. Certainly we don’t have a full free market in Canada. Otherwise, we wouldn’t have a monopoly government Post Office, Via Rail, Ontario Hydro (or the parts thereof), health care system, etc.
Penny dear. It’s not a matter of backtracking, but clarification of what I thought fairly simple points. I never suggested that anyone here refused to see Islam as an ideology. I simply said that revealing Islam to have the properties of all ideologies is not in any way remarkable. All ideologies are comprehensive views of the world. Why fear Islam so much? Why not Totalitarian Communist ideology? or Oligarchy? Theocracy? Social democracy? Besides, a point I’ve made repeatedly, in the unregulated marketplace of competing ideologies, clearly Islam (as resistant and militant as it might be) shall be efficiently eradicated by triumphant Reason and the invisible providential hand that guides all free markets. Right?
If you’ve somehow understood that I’m promulgating the idea that the Left is a friend of capitalism, well not even close. While yes I don’t speak for all of them (no one does), I do speak with a vested interest and in the hopes of rescuing the term from being equated with any ideology to the left of the Conservatives. Again, I believe any Lefty worthy of the name is ultimately fundamentally against capitalism and at the very least seeks radically to transform the way the system works.

As for the Muslims themselves, the Quran is the uncreated, unmitigated word of allah, good for all time. Science and reason are subordinate and in fact are warned against if in conflict with the Quran. A muslim cannot deny, or omit one word of the Quran, even if in conflict with science.
Reason certainly didn’t prevent the western educated ‘Magnificent 19’ from committing the 911 debacle. Neither did it prevent the muslim doctors from planning and attempting to blow up points of England.

I assure you, there is no correlation between the two. It’s odd that you mentioned both in the same sentence.
For example, there is no hippyophobes here that I’m aware of. C02 on the other hand, being erroneously branded a life threatening gas is obviously debated based on evidence, especially lack of it.
The intentionally pejorative, Islamophobe, is a word coined by Islamists in order to create racist accusations. By definition, Islam is not a race. An unreasonable, irrational fear of Islam is not correct either, based on history, what their own texts say and what their imams preach. The proof, as they say, is in the pudding. Once again, it is Islamist manipulation of the current uncritical, unethical, moral and cultural equivalence propaganda foisted on the west.
