And redemption.
(I have a special place in my heart for this sport. The first horse I ever sat astride was “Leni”, one of my mother’s show jumpers.)

I have always loved horses, and it always amazes me to see a 1500+lb horse soar over obstacles like this!..
Kates mother competed quite successfully in the sport of show jumping. She and her cousin were well known on the Sask show jumping circuit. The red ribbons and trophys proved that they knew the sport.Kate gets her “stick too it ivness from her mother”.
By accident, I caught this event this morning. An exciting moment! A magnificent animal.
Nice!
It is only when lightness is added to the equation that it becomes artistic, otherwise it’s just a sport.Difficult obstacles and timed events should be condemned;far better to judge the form in the approach, the jump, the landing and the depart for the next jump.Lightness and quality of horsemanship over the jumps should be judged more closely as it should also be in the dressage arena on the first of three day events.
What a magnificent shot.
When it is an event with two or more competing as one, i.e. pairs, or team, all members get a medal. In equestrian events just what does the horse get? An apple or a bag of oats?
Anyhow, congrats to Eric & Hickstead on a job well done. An extra congrats for Eric staying clean. That might be an even bigger win.
Texas Canuck:
When the horse gets the gold, he gets apples, oats and put up for stud!

That is one hell of a shot!! One of the best photos I’ve seen in years.
To Hans Rupprecht: “Apples, oats and put up for stud.” That’s more than we get!!
Horses are magnificent to watch when ridden by a consummate mount in “pinks.” (I’ve never understood why the red coats are referred to as “pinks.”)
Speaking of the cavalry, Hans Rupprecht, my grandfather rode in the cavalry in the First World War and rode every weekend after that.
In fact, horses were his religion. He rode religiously to the hounds every Sunday–and did he ever look handsome in his riding kit.
Clear blue sky? Maybe Spruce Meadows…..
Sorry Hans, but putting a gelding out to stud sounds like cruel and unusual punishment. 😉
btw, a lot of equestrian horses seem to be geldings. Probably something to do with temperment I guess. Any experts out there with some horse sense?
texas canuck – maybe its to do with dragging equipment over the rails.
It’s nice to know that Kate’s mom was a show jumper: what an elegant sport.
It seems that batb and I have something else in common: I have a picture of one of my grandfathers in my living room. He’s wearing his “pinks”—only worn, I think for the opening hunt—on a lovely chestnut, with beagles in the background. (Where that hunt took place is now in the middle of a bustling section of a big city, covered with multi-storey buildings.) My grandfather was too old to jump in shows, but younger show jumpers borrowed his horses.
Both my grandfathers (born at the end of the 19th century) were in the cavalry: they grew up riding horses, as did almost all their contemporaries, before cars were widely owned. Horses are a link with the past and it’s sad that so few people these days have even touched a horse, let alone ridden one. They’re magnificent animals.
Bravo, Eric Lamaze!
(Kate, could you post a picture of your mom on one of her horses?)
I could be wrong on this, but I believe that Hickstead is a Stallion. Produce more of him.
(cruel and unusual punishment,LOL)
I can’t believe Canada has so few medals. It is clear you are a power in the Winter Games but the fact of the matter is that a good percentage of foreign Olympians train in the U. S. for both Summer and Winter Olympic venues. If any country is going to train in the U. S., it should be Canada. Get with the program.
Nonetheless, congratulations. Jumping is not an easy sport but it surely is one of the most elegant.
j Dunlop; The horses are judged on all the things that you mention,if they dont do it all just right, they knock the poles down.Go to a horse show someday, the ones that do it right are the winners.
Lookout:
As I understand it “Pinks” are named after a taylor, a Mr Pink(!), who acquired a military surplus of red Melton cloth and produced the popular riding coat.
“Pinks” are worn by members who have been awarded their “buttons” from opening hunt until the end of the season. Cub Hunting (training the young hounds in late summer) is done in “rat catcher” attire (hacking jacket and tan breeks) as opposed to the red jacket and white breeks of the formal hunt.
All hail our mounted contingent at the Olympics!

Male horses, like dogs and cats are a lot more trouble when left intact(i.e. not neutered). A male un-neutered dog can be a real nuisance and pain in the ass while a 1500 lb horse can be downright dangerous. When a stallion gets a wiff of a female in heat they can be a real problem. My wife is show secretary for many horseshows and stabling a stallion at a show can be a real challenge. Fortunatety there are not usually too many stallions at any one show but they do require special attention. And some can be really problematic. Currently my daughter rides a stallion for one of her clients. Fortunately he is very well behaved but you always have to be aware of that fact. Coincidently my daughter was in the show jumping ring this morning at a horse show when Eric Lamaze won his gold. I could hear the cheers over the pa system from the announcers booth as my daughter was completing her course.
As for this from J. dunlop

there is a part of show jumping which addresses what you describe and it is called “Hunters” Smaller jumps and it is concerend with form and style vs. heighth and speed. Many horses compete as Hunters and Jumpers.
And as for “new” why don’t you just PISS OFF asshole.
For those that think that “forcing” horses to jump is cruel, if you had the opportunity to observe the training that goes into making a jumper like Lamazes horse you would soon see the foley in that statement. Horses are primairly concerned with thier own safety i.e. fight or flight. It takes YEARS to get a horse to jump to the level you see in the Olympics. And to get a horse to jump over a jump like the last one where they are not able to “see” what is on the other side requires the utmost trust of the horse in his/her rider. Horses will often “refuse” at a jump that goes over water because they think something in the puddle will reach up and grab them. It is is only through a learning process that they become familiar with any and all situations so they can compete in the show ring.
And if you think for a monent that you can cruelly force a horse to jump over a fence that is too high for its ablilty think again. They simply will refuse to attempt it. No amonut of begging, wimpering, crying ,cajoing or beating
will make any differnece.
Show jumping demands a lot from a horse but they do it wliingly.
Congrats to Eric Lamaze.

Does anyone read more than the first line of comments by ‘new’..isam…mos…whatever the moniker of the day?
I sure don’t. What a waste of space!
Congratulations to Eric Lamaze. I hope he’s drawn the appropriate conclusion from his recent successes at Spruce Meadows and the Olympics, compared to his difficulties in the past.
As for the faux-Mohammedan troll, I read the first line, then skip to the end to see which moniker haye/new/not agree with Mark Steyn/mos/isam etc. is using at the moment.
A good friend of mine was raised with horses. Nothing special, just regular horses for her to ride. She told me they are exactly like big dogs in that they are very curious about other horses, humans and love to be outside. She indicated they enjoy training because of the interaction with their owner and because it adds variety to their daily schedule. I still prefer my horses under the hood but her perspective was intriguing.
Keeping a stallion is a major commitment and hassle, but another thing that is considered when the decision to geld — many competition horses do a fabulous job but aren’t breeding material canidates. There really is no sane reason to keep an animal whole (and subject to the distractions/rebellions of hormones) if they aren’t breeding quality, but that doesn’t preclude them from being very worthwhile animals for companionship or sport. Same with dogs; cats I don’t know about, knowledge of cats ends at the ones in my barn.
As I’ll restate, those horses get very well taken care of; I doubt they’d give two figs about a medal as much as an extra peppermint or two.
As for this being some “entertainment” that somehow oppresses poor horseys, our domestication of the horse (and the dog) certainly opened up a better life for both partners than they would have had apart (yes, horses and dogs have been miserably treated down through the ages by horrid humans, they’ve also been loved and cherished, and cared for beyond all other animals by humans down through the ages as well — I doubt you could convince my horses and dogs to want to become free and loving it for more than a few hours). Also, the equestrian sport isn’t “all work on the horse’s part” — one hour of medium intensity riding (the average person’s usual level) burns off the caloric equivalent of a baked potato; most of the Olympic/national level riders are riding up to 8 hours a day at high intensity, 5-7 days a week, plus doing cross training. Hardly chicken feed. Couple that with the inherent physical risks involved (an orthopedic surgeon I knew said he always detested riding accidents, they were guaranteed to be bad if not catostrophic in nature) and you have a sport that, while relatively age and gender equal as physicality isn’t the only important component, isn’t for the weak.
By the way, lovely shot.

I fully understand that horse riders are love their horse like dog or cat no question about this but love some time may lead to abuse and control animal to worng way too much too little too
you train the horse right!!
a man can train soccer players as well
do you think every trainer are not spend 8 hours per day even they are trainer of all game
some trainer are do excerise more than the players
if man train the other men is called it sport to me
if man train animal is not sport of human
this is sport of animal
the gold medal belong to horsey not the human
in dog shows also medal goes to dog or cat and trainee of them in most cased belong to number one dog of year or cat of year.
I am not deny the fact teh rider spend the time to train the dog
mypoint I do not accept
horse trainer with human jumper
if you are human and involve animal ths show call it circus or entertainment not the SPORT to me again this is my opionion.
I am not also saying people bother teh horse but can be bother them too if horse broke the legs tehy are useless
or wieght and all other issue but can be abusive to animla to force them to win the game for me
again I do not like abuse animal for suffer them to let human win
mostpeople like circus I do not like circus I think they did suffera nda abuse animal to dance
or dulphine dancing in marinland or etc..
It means if human change regulare bahaviour horse to made attract to aduinece to watch them that is called entertainment bsuiens not sport for human
I am not deny the time and may work hard but at the end horse should get medal not the human
because majorkity of job is done by horse

in real sport men train the otehr men to do for exampel soccer game and that is called it sport to me nto use animla to act like human instead
using animla is for me only entertainment and I do not like horse gambleing too again this is my idea no claping from jewishteacher look out
Does anyone read more than the first line of comments by ‘new’..isam…mos…whatever the moniker of the day?

I am not deny the time and may work hard but at the end horse should get medal not the human
because majorkity of job is done by horse

in conclusion nobody usualy give gold or silver to animla traner medals that medal belong to horse or dogs usually becuse that animla mus be smart too to do such nice jump
