Just watched the crazy old owl of CTV news… Craig Oliver…
make a pronouncement about Prime Minister Harper returning
to the House of Commons… “with a snarl.”
No word yet on whether there will be blood dripping from his
    fangs.

  2. Got a call today from MP Wajid Khan (Cons) inviting me to a barbeque in the area. Seems old Waj got my feedback where I told him in no uncertain terms that I’m not voting Tory in the next election due to their dropping the ball on the whole “Human Rights” debacle.
Well I’m not going to the barbeque and I’m certainly not voting Tory (and you can add the stupid apologies to my list of grievances).
Nope, this is too important for me or you to fall for some Lucy-pulls-the-ball-away-from-Charlie-Brown promise. Either the Cons come up with something tout de suite before the election or I sit on my butt on election night. Or if some party steps forward with a plan to rid us of the HRC’s, I vote for them regardless of who they may be. Choose your Canada.

  3. I must have missed this potential Academy Award-winning documentary if it was already broadcast in Canada. Maybe it should win a Nobel prize also.

While Burn Up might fool some people, the alarmists will have to do better than this if they’re hoping to reignite the flagging interest in their cause among a public that sees a growing disconnect between what they’ve been told, and what’s actually happening.
Meanwhile, those who have long been skeptical about the global warming scare will find it entirely appropriate that the world of fiction is one of the few realms, outside of the IPCC and the Gore household, in which the subject is still being talked about seriously. If we keep seeing more dramas like Burn Up, and less factual reporting about global warming, then we can safely assume that the world’s in no danger of burning up any time soon.

  4. Plato said, “The price good men pay for indifference to public affairs is to be ruled by evil men”. Matt got a personal invitation from his Member of Parliament to attend a political gathering in his riding. Matt could go to the gathering and attempt to do something, to at least buttonhole his MP and or staff on an issue of importance to him and many folks here at SDA. But Matt is going to stay home and pout. Thanks, Matt, we knew we could count on you.

  5. Plus, Vitruvius, if the Liberals get back in on account of all these Conservative voters being impatient with the Conservatives, I’m sure that will really help the HRC situation.
    /:>O>
Read between the lines when you’re dealing with Mr. Harper. He has a different job than the rest of us.
    Here’s a hint, people: Majority.

  6. really Matt.
you could mention the various HRC’s of Canada and how they seem to operate outside of the Charter of Rights, in particular section 2B…
and have a hamburger, mingle, twist a few other’s ears to whatever you have in mind.
I understand the idea of them having “to serve” but you could tell them in person what more you’d like. (and I don’t mean fried onions and mustard)

  7. Thanks for the memories Vit… After watching Les, I went and pulled Paul of of his case and promptly remembered that no matter how much I try I can’t really play…
    Matt…
Not voting is worse than voting liberal or NDP for that matter. It is because on average, 60% of the people don’t bother, that this country got into the state it is in. The people gave the politicians Carte Blanche to do as they wish. It is supposed to be the other way around.

  8. I just watched a bit on CTV about the troops acquiring helicopters. Our own later, lease for now,it will save lives. Then,of course ,to prove that CTV is balanced, they brought on Jack Layton, who off camera, dropped his drawers, and allowed his asshole’Steve Sharples’to speak. He told us that the troops can still be killed in helicopters.Atta boy Stevey,re-affirm that the only way Canada will never lose any troops is to stay at home and hide under the blankets. What a waste of oxygen and airtime.

  9. Went to the summer barbecue at Senator St Germain’s ranch. SH gave a bang-up speech. When he listed all of the MINORITY Government’s accomplishments I’m sure all were astonished. This is the longest standing minority government in Canadian history. They took some brave stands and achieved obviously better results than a majority Liberal Govt. I particularly like the feeling of calm and the lack of insanity this Govt. provides. Things are being take care of!
The 26th Abbotsford Airshow is this weekend. In honor of those who’s bravery made everything we enjoy today possible: her’s Vera Lynn

  10. Ah yes… I’m glad to see more people are taking to task those who demand action now on their pet issues else they withold votes and donations.
What exactly is your end game there, Matt? Course, I don’t want to pile on — you’re simply the latest of dozens of posters here who are either dishonest regarding their intent or incredibly short-sighted.

  11. Gunney99: Were the MSM not there, refused to report on it or were they just hiding in the bushes waiting for someone to put a lampshade on their head or accidentally get a french fry inserted in their nose?
Damn, that would have been front page material, great optics, eh.

  12. That’s right – I’m going to go to a barbeque in the GTA and get quality personal time with the MP. That’s it. That’s what’s going to happen.
It’s not like the Tories don’t know the issues. It’s not like I haven’t already filled them in on my views – that’s why the guy phoned me.
    The next step is theirs.

  13. Matt you know it is a uphill battle in a Minority, the socialist have infiltrated this country in all forms. from your local council’s to civil servants to MP’s living off of you & me the Taxpayer. We finaly have a chance to rid this country of these Tete suckers but this cannot be achieved until we form a majority. Canadians are slowly waking up to the fact that we are dangerously close to a Big Brother Society(Totalitarian) & this can only be stopped by people such as yourself that are not afraid to speak up. Don’t lose the faith, Countries hundreds of years ago passed the word to rise up by a means of small underground newspapers This is our means Blogs like Kates that have increased due to people saying enough is enough. Hang in there Matt we Need you.

  14. “The recipients singled out by the Conservatives include:”
“- $5,000 to former CBC broadcaster Avi Lewis, who now works for al Jazeera and who is described in a Conservative memo as “a general radical,” to help pay for his travel to film festivals in Australia and Argentina;”
    …-
    “Ottawa axes arts travel program”
“More than 300 grants were awarded in 2006-07.
Among those who received a grant was author Gwynne Dyer, who received $3,000 to help him travel to Cuba for a series of lectures. The grant program’s annual report said Mr. Dyer’s funding application was approved “with the expected results of creating greater awareness and appreciation of Canadian foreign policy … within key audiences of Cuban decision makers and opinion leaders.”
But the Conservative talking points say Mr. Dyer is “a left-wing columnist and author who has plenty of money to travel on his own.””

Even as Stephane Dion is making noises about a fall election (that could be as soon as six weeks from now), the Liberal Party has lost two candidates.
Garry Oledzki in Saskatchewan and Robert “Bobby” Morrissy in PEI have both stepped down as candidates.
In the case of Bobby Morrissey, it might indeed be a problem selling Stephane Dion’s carbon tax.”

  16. That’s what every party needs, cop-outs. The day my whole support for the Conservatives goes down over the issue of something like HRC’s will be the day I stop talking politics.
Also the day the Liberal/Left talk about scrapping the HRC’s we’ll know their raison d’etre, to get votes, not a change in ideology.
We have to understand Harper can’t possibly come out and banish HRC’s with a magic wand, it’ll be a civilized process and we have to give him the time.
HE HAS A MINORITY GOVERNMENT surrounded by Leftists in the House and in the press.

  17. I’m waiting for October 2009! We’ll have a vote then for sure. Dion sucks/blows about elections. That’s all he’s got.
Harper will pull a Chretien, if Dion(Day) taunts him in the House.

  19. (PDF warning) Christopher P. Borick and Barry G. Rabe, A Reason to Believe: Examining the Factors that Determine Americans’ Views on Global Warming
During the past two years, public perceptions of global warming have shifted significantly in the United States. A number of 2007 national surveys reveal that Americans increasingly acknowledge global warming’s existence and believe anthropogenic factors are its cause. Another national survey in spring 2008 shows that the number of Americans who believe that there is significant evidence of global warming may have declined. These shifts in public opinion have been widely discussed in the media and academia, but little is actually known about what drives individual views on global warming. Do personal experiences impact views (e.g. hotter temperatures in their state)? Does existing evidence presented in national media (e.g. melting glaciers), scientific projections (e.g. computer modeling), dramatic experiences (e.g. disastrous hurricanes or award-winning films), or some combination of these factors influence public beliefs?

  20. Matt, you can still “vote”, just refuse the ballot. They have to record that ballot as a no show. If you stay home, you just become part of the statisitics of uninvolved voters, the 50% who do not even do the minimum by spoiling their ballot. And for all the cheerleaders here, I view the Cons as Liberals in grey suits, just a shade off the Liberal Brand. They have no principles and at my age I’m not in a compromising mood re politics. The issues that tons could use to hammer home a majority are being ignored. I don’t trust any of the politicos or their Party politics. They all suck.
I’ll make a prediction: when, or if Harper gets his majority, even then his hands will be tied on changes. The civil service will revolt and he’ll have to contend with “maximum disruption” from unionized government employees. They will be planting landmines everywhere to trip them up. He’ll be putting fires out until the Libs get their sh*t together and then watch out, they’ll be back. A one term majority, maybe. Then the Gulag. Watch for it.

  21. Bryanr, I have no faith.
The Tories did nothing when these tribunals were set up. They knew they were being stacked with left-wing fascists trying to circumvent the democratic process, but they just sat back and let it happen. Some of them even embraced it – the woman who came down hard on pastor Stephen Boisson is a Tory appointee.
Unless all that “hidden agenda” b.s. is true, I expect the Tories of the future to behave pretty much as they have in the past and the present.
For that matter, why should I support a party that didn’t lift a finger while the country was being damaged – all because it was trying to regain a majority after spending 15 years in the wilderness?
Now’s the time to start leading instead of pandering. My vote is open to the party that shows before the next election that it’s going to fix this mess. If it’s no one – and that’s likely the case – I stay home.

  22. Sunday is Tishah B’Av, the anniversary of the destruction of the First and Second Temples, the most evil day in the Jewish calendar. Too bad it doesn’t align exactly with this other anniversary.
Caroline Glick, Column One: Ignoring Failure in Gaza
Monday will mark the third anniversary of the forcible expulsion of the Jews of Gaza and northern Samaria from their homes. Those expulsion were followed weeks later by the withdrawal of IDF personnel from the Gaza Strip.
Unlike the Rabin-Peres government’s decision to embark on the Oslo peace process with the PLO in 1993, Ariel Sharon’s withdrawal from Gaza did not take years to be discredited. It took moments…

…According to the Dieticians of Canada, groups at risk of not obtaining adequate amounts of vitamin D include:
    * Individuals with dark skin have lower production of vitamin D because of their pigmentation.
    * Individuals who wear clothing covering most of their bodies due to cultural or religious reasons and those who often eat few dietary sources of vitamin D.

Should they cover vitamin D pill bottles in brown paper as to not offend certain “groups” ?

  26. Delpite the whining of the mindless partisan-ry here about Matt’s choice – demeaning his freedom of CHOICE by reducing concerns to ‘pet issues’ is exactly the idiocy that allows such mediocrity in government to exist.
Meanwhile o’ mindless ones, your votes ensure you are contributing money to the NDP and the Libranos (bill 61, of course), the firmly entrenched gun registry & the CWB, highest taxes in the G8, a cumulative 28 billion dollar surplus over 3 budgets, increase in government spending of 18 percent (the largest single increase in 2006 in the history of government), hidden talking points about the HRC’s, and a host of other Faux-Con bullsheet – Matt is exerting the only true power of the voter.
Swallowing bullsheet and calling it honey probably works for alot of you out there.
I suspect y’all have alot of practice at it.

  28. Matt one step at a time, Conflicts are not won overnite. We need to get that majority in place, we need to get an elected 2nd chamber not an appointed one. If the PM went gungho after them, the left & msm would be all over him Pointing fingers “See we told you so, the Redneck Hidden Adgenda”. As you know up here in Grey/Bruce our local farmers have had a battle going against the Appointed Beaurocrats in Toronto Known as the Niagra Escarpment Commision, This bunch has been telling us up here what we can do on our land for years EG: What color you can paint your Barn. We have one MPP that has been leading the crusade to abolish them, has he been successfull Not Yet but he is getting increasingly more people IE: councils voicing their outrage. Ya its a long hard battle, Are we giving up? Hell No.
Now we have another battle Too many moving here from the GTA telling us they don’t want their beauty spoiled, In fact Goodale made a speach in Collingwood recently & stated that they are targeting this area because the Toronto left is moving here.
Don’t give up man hang in there.

  29. Good on you Mississauga, I agree.
    Don’t go.
Look at the article that maz2 links above here at 8.34am.
    Thanks Maz!
It took over 2 “f”n years for the CPC to cut funding for Avi Lewis and Gwyn Dyer’s circle jerks in Cuba.
    CUBA!!!???
Take a look at that article and tell me that the guys that approve Gwyn Dyer lauding Trudeapian shit to Cubans do anything positive for Canada, other than feather socialists nests.
Why is there still a Department of Socilaist Nutjob Funding to employ these idiots.
Why isn’t the entire program, department, staff, mission statement and “Ministry Of” under two yards of non-recyclables in some landfill in Michigan?
I mean what is the guy who OK’s The Rehostatics to China for $10,000 gonna do with his time now.
Think he’s actually gonna produce something beneficial for Canada?
Why two years… what have they been doing for two years besides barfing out their destructive apologies to every dehydrated mummified skinned knee they can lay their weeping eyes on.
The process of defunding communist freaks and know nothing Toronto socialist morons dressed up as artists should have taken exactly 2 minutes.
    Don’t go.
    Action talks and bullshit walks.

  30. HEADS UP TO KATE OR ANY OTHER BT BLOGGER READING THIS WHO WANTS TO BLOG ON IT AFTERWARDS:

TOPIC: WHY IS THE US IN THIS CURRENT ENERGY CRISIS?
I SUSPECT THE DEMOCRATS (NANCY PELOSI AND OTHERS) AND THE ENVIRONMENT MOVEMENT ARE GOING TO GET AN EAR FULL!

  31. Re: Matt abstaining from bbq
Would being passive qualify as free expression of one’s personality?
If I would like to tell people how to act, I would advocate for double, extra-super-mega-sized carbon tax on outdoor grilling. There is no need for smoky bbq , while you have clean electric energy and you can fry the steak. Oh, wait! That’s unhealthy! Raw meat – steak tartar is the answer; holy salmonella!
The point is: making own choice is as good as the right choice , although with the vastly limited knowledge of the future events we may disagree on the outcome.

  32. Mississauga Matt, while I can understand your reasoning and recognize that you may make your own decisions, don’t you think that from a tactical perspective, it would be best if you DID go to the bbq BUT used the opportunity to make your protestations known to the OTHERS gathered there?
You could wear a bright yellow t-shirt adorned with whatever message you would like to get out to the people there…you could pass out pamphlets that summarized your concerns…you could speak loudly and critically.
    Consider the following quotes:
“The Chinese use two brush strokes to write the word ‘crisis.’ One brush stroke stands for danger; the other for opportunity. In a crisis, be aware of the danger – but recognize the opportunity.” – Matt, you have an opportunity.
“(He) Who can protest and does not, is an accomplice in the act.” – Matt, you can protest.
“There are many ways of going forward, but only one way of standing still.” – Matt, you are standing still and waiting for them to act.
I applaud your principles and your stoic stand, but you must keep moving forward and keep up the pressure.

  33. Sorry, Matt, two more quotes to consider:
“Even if you’re on the right track, you’ll get run over if you just sit there.” (Will Rogers)
“There are risks and costs to a program of action. But they are far less than the long-range risks and costs of comfortable inaction.” (John F. Kennedy)

  34. It is better to die on your feet than to live on your knees.
Quotes are fun. Matt might as well get called a pouty, one issue crank at the BBQ as well as in here.
Echo chamber events do not tolerate anyone hi-jacking the message. And neither do political parties with (or in the Cons case, without) agendas.

  35. The word “Friday” links these two reports.
Russia The Bear invades Georgia on Friday while the MSM is focusing its attention on Mao Stlong’s Red Orympics in China on Friday.
    Flashback*. 1956.
Soviet Army invades Hungary while world’s attention focused on “Suez Crisis”.

  36. And while on quotes, this guy has politicians nailed:
Dependence begets subservience and venality, suffocates the germ of virtue, and prepares fit tools for the designs of ambition – Thomas Jefferson
Every government degenerates when trusted to the rulers of the people alone. The people themselves are its only safe depositories – Thomas Jefferson
I am mortified to be told that, in the United States of America, the sale of a book can become a subject of inquiry, and of criminal inquiry too – Thomas Jefferson
And with respect to Bill C61 – that’s Cretin’s master stroke – where political parties now have their lips wrapped around your wallet – in perpetuity. Every vote, fully indexed to inflation generates a nice steady stream of income to the parties. So, your tax money is goign straight to Taliban Jack, Citoyen Dion, and resident Crank May. Whether you like it not. What do the Cons have to say about this? Why, so long, and thanks for the cash…which reminds me of one last quote:
To compel a man to furnish funds for the propagation of ideas he disbelieves and abhors is sinful and tyrannical – Thomas Jefferson
Sure is refreshing to hear the words of an actual conservative every once in a while, no?

  37. Michael Freund, Pro-Israel editor goes on trial in Bangladesh
After repeated delays, the trial of a Bangladeshi Muslim editor arrested for advocating ties with Israel began in Dhaka on Wednesday.
Salah Uddin Shoaib Choudhury, editor of the Weekly Blitz, an English-language newspaper published in the Bangladeshi capital, is facing a series of charges that include sedition.
If convicted, he could be sentenced to death…

  38. Matt – the HRCs are a big deal, worthy of making some noise. Maybe even worthy of witholding donations – but to not vote for the best government (warts and all) that Canada has had in 30 year is insane.

  39. Tim, I agree, you can’t play..
    Just kidding.
I can’t either, well not like that!

  40. Well, I’m finally fully back at blogging, and today I’ve a bunch of choice posts, including my own observations of the war between Russia and Georgia which broke out just today, interestingly the first day of the Bloody Olympics. Did Russia choose today to annex, by force, Georgia’s separatist South Odessia territory? Has Russia reverted completely to its Evil Empire Soviet self, finally returned to its imperialist agenda, one invasion/annexation at a time?
Those who thought I was gone, come on back! You won’t be sorry!

  42. Kady did so say Ryan Sparrow is a “senior Liberal strategist”. Here is her headline:
    …-
“According to senior Liberal strategist Ryan Sparrow …

Seriously, is there a scintilla of actual evidence – circumstantial or otherwise – that now infamously former Liberal candidate Robert Morrissey bolted because of the Green Shift?
I mean, I’m not saying he didn’t – heck, anything is possible. But based on the coverage so far, it seems as though that particular claim originated with Conservative Party spokesbird (and erstwhile part-time House of Commons salary-drawer) Ryan Sparrow, who isn’t exactly what I’d call objective – and, I’m betting, is downright shocked by how easy it has been to push this story to the local PEI press despite a noticeable lack of independent corroboration.”
