Re maz2’s 8:53 a.m. comment and links on the Tories killing PromArts grants for foreign travel:
Bravo, PMSH and the CPC!!
It’s ABOUT TIME.
Two recipients maz2 didn’t feature were:
Toronto-based experimental rock band Holy F**k, for a week-long tour of the United Kingdom, which got $5,000, and Tal Bachman, son of The Guess Who’s Randy Bachman, to tour music festivals in South Africa and Zimbabwe to the tune of $16,500.
Some people don’t even MAKE $16,500 a year! Some of us could use $16,500 to much better use than a Bachman rock tour of Africa. (Doesn’t Randy Bachman have pots of money? Couldn’t he cough up $16,500 to send his kiddie overseas?)
‘More pork from the Librano$ to the pigs, OINK, OINK, pigs who are used to slurping at the Librano trough in the Librano barnyard.
Good on the CPC for putting an end to the $4.7 million slops. Too bad if “the move is sure to provoke a backlash in the cultural community, already angry at the federal Conservatives for tinkering with the funding criteria for other arts programs.”
I love the line from the report announcing the cut, which is part of a government-wide review to trim spending: Senior Tories discovered that some recipients of taxpayer-funded foreign travel were “not exactly the foot that most Canadians would want to see put forward.”
Right on! Hep, two, three, four…
i now hope that the CPC will set its sites on the NFB. another money pit.
Germany’s National Socialists said: “Deutschland, Deutschland über alles, Über alles in der Welt”.

“(August 1936)
Introduction
For two weeks in August 1936, Adolf Hitler’s Nazi dictatorship camouflaged its racist, militaristic character while hosting the Summer Olympics. Soft-pedaling its antisemitic agenda and plans for territorial expansion, the regime exploited the Games to bedazzle many foreign spectators and journalists with an image of a peaceful, tolerant Germany.
Having rejected a proposed boycott of the 1936 Olympics, the United States and other western democracies missed the opportunity to take a stand that — some observers at the time claimed — might have given Hitler pause and bolstered international resistance to Nazi tyranny. With the conclusion of the Games, Germany’s expansionist policies and the persecution of Jews and other “enemies of the state” accelerated, culminating in World War II and the Holocaust.”

Matt, just a few of Harper’s accomplishment vs 13 years of Liberal do-nothing, corruption and theft.
• In their 2007 budget, reduced corporate tax rates to 15% from 22.12. by 2012
• 2007 budget also allowed manufacturers to write off capital investments in machinery within a two year 50% allowance.
• 2007 budget increase the lifetime capital gains exemption for small business from 500,000 to 750,000. The first increase in nearly TWENTY years.

• Changed immigration act to focus on needed immigrants not family reunification
• Increased sexual consent from 14 to 16
• Toughened gun crimes and added minimum sentences.
• Elections every 4 years
• Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day has favoured former police and corrections officers for new appointments to the National Parole Board since the Harper government took office in 2006, government records show.
o Of the 36 new members Day has named to the board since he became minister that year, 23 are retired police officers or former federal and provincial corrections staff.

Correction to my 7:04 p.m. post:
The Toronto-based experimental rock band Holy F**k received $3,000 for a week-long tour of the United Kingdom.
It was AVI LEWIS, described in the CPC memo as “a general radical,” who received $5,000 to help pay for his travel to film festivals in Australia and Argentina. (Avi is Stephen Lewis and Michele Landsberg’s son and a former CBC broadcaster who now works for Al-Jazeera.)
Like Stephen Lewis, Michele Landsberg, Avi Lewis or his wife, Naomi Klein, couldn’t come up with $5,000 to cover his travel expenses to FILM FESTIVALS? Some of us who paid for his trip haven’t flown in four years…
Memo to Avi and the other pigs at the trough: PAY YOUR OWN DAMNED EXPENSES.
LindaL — thanks so much!
