  4. So, nearly 24 hours after the fact the RCMP has not charged a suspect, or released a name.
    They’re still “investigating”.
    Compare with Knoxville shooting.
    I read that there was a 3 hour standoff. 1 guy with a knife, alone, cornered in a bus, surrounded by cops. I have *literally* seen this movie before and it is called Bus 174.

  6. There was an interview with Stockwell Day. After the interview, CTV said that Day flatly refused to enter into a discussion about registering knives after this event. I can’t believe anyone being stupid enough to ask such as question. The Phantom is right. If we had right to carry laws, anyone on that bus with a gun could have saved this guy’s life. The cops can’t do it. They are simply janitors, called in to clean up the mess after the fact.

  7. I would like to know how many males were on the bus and what was their age. I’m 47 and have morals, my stand, whether I succeed or die trying, would have been to help that young man. I couldn’t live with myself if I just ran off of the bus. His screams would haunt me forever.
    My heart goes out to his family as they’ll struggle to cope with the evil that felled their son.

  16. Christoph, I didn’t think that it mattered, but I am trained. 16 years of military of which included the Gulf war and Bosnia plus extensive combat sports, I’m quite trained. But as I said, I wouldn’t think that it would matter. I’d probably die trying to save the young man, that’s not the point. I COULDN’T live with myself if I let something like that happen in front of me.
    I don’t understand anyone questioning this, I would hope that someone would do the same for me in that situation. We’ve become friggen bystanders.

    I can imagine how a civilian would want to escape from this horrific scene. More than likely the victim was fatally stabbed prior to anyone intervening.

I think that it is probably a bit premature to enter into any detailed judgement of this case at this point, as the details are still unfolding, and so far there’s mostly a lot of “eye-witness” (and we know how reliable they are) evidence, nevertheless, I don’t see the point in arguing with people over their lymbic responses to this news. Are we not human?

    I’ll echo multirec’s comment as well. I too would not be able to live with myself if I let someone be butchered right in front of me.
    You have fallen prey to “expert syndrome” – the fallacy that ONLY those tasked and trained by “authority” have justification for a specific activity.
    This is a pernicious perspective. Every individual should be prepared to rise to the challenge, in whatever fashion they best find themselves suited, to oppose injustice, criminality and evil.
    Running feeds the beast.
    And society dies another inch.

  27. This guy is a piece of garbage… a total coward. There was a similar attack against a random person here in Toronto a few months back where a crazed man stabbed a woman to death in a shopping complex parking lot. Her husband ran out of a shop and tried to rescue her but was also fatally stabbed. The suspect then stabbed himself in the neck and was in critical condition… not sure if he died. This lunatic in Manitoba tried to escape out the window instead of doing the “honourable” thing at that point.

  28. At first blush and with the very limited information available:
    1)The perp would seem to be a lone nut wielding a widely available weapon so no generalizable conclusions can be drawn.
    2)A bus is a very confined space with very limited visibility so unless one were directly beside the incident and even then it may take some time to grasp what was occuring by which point the victim was probably fatally wounded.
    3)Very few in our society are trained in combatives or military counter-ambush drills so shock would incapacitate those immediately next to the incident well past the point when intervention could have saved the victim.
    4)That being said, the general pervasiveness of a “don’t get involved” mentality added to legal/judicial sanctions against aggressive action in self-defence or defence of a fellow citizen may tend to exacerbate the feelings of helplessness/paralysis which may have affected those closest to the incident. Would the outcome have been different in a society oriented toward civil defense e.g. Israel? Who knows.

  30. While beheadings and dismemberment are quite common in murders committed behind closed doors, it is really quite rare to see this in so public a venue.
    I cannot think of another example (in Canada) in my lifetime..
    Pym Fortune was nearly decapitated in public by his murderer, who only stopped because he found the cutting too tough..

  31. For Christ’s sake you guys, the quickest way to make this horrible scene doubley tragic would be to have 2 or 3 “untrained civilians” pulling handguns and squeezing off shots in a panicy, jostling and scream-filled bus.
    They’d just as likely kill a couple innocents before they hit the sick f*ck they targeted.

  33. Tonight’s National has lengthy interviews with two of the witnesses, who seemed pretty clear-headed and…alert. One of them had been sitting directly in front of the two men. The murdered kid, who was around 20 years old, according to one of the eyewitnesses, had been asleep with his head against the window, listening to music on his earbuds when the big fella started attacking him. Big fella pinned now-standing against the wall, between the seat and the washroom, and stabbed him “robotically”. Later he held kid’s now-severed head up in front of the people holding the front door shut, thrust it towards them and kind of waved it before dropping it.
    These things don’t happen very often. What really annoyed me is that every single news outlet I’ve heard, after they first describe the unfortunate occurance, immediately launch into the ol’ predictable, utterly dumb “What can we do do make buses safer?”/”Are buses safe enough?”/”Are bus companies doing enough to make sure their passengers are safe?…” etc. etc. etc.
    A Greyhound spokesman on the radio pointed out that many passengers in rural areas are picked up at roadside at set locations — how can you have security guards/scanners everywhere? Of course, that was management — the people who actually have to run the company; on The National, the unionized drivers were calling for a new phalanx of unionized security to ensure the safety of passengers.
    Aye-ep. What about miniature trains at amusement parks? What if something happens there — “Are miniature trains safe? Are we doing enough to protect miniature train passengers?….”
    Gaw. “Is it safe to take off your foam suit and leave your closet?…”

In all likelyhood, by the time anyone knew what was happening, the victim was already beyond saving, so getting everyone else off of the bus uninjured, counts as doing the right thing under the circumstances. They kept the perp on the bus, prevented it from moving and didn’t do anything stupid and get themselves killed. Personally, in a case like this, I wish we still had the death penalty. Whether he is insane, or not, treat him like a rabid dog. And never put his name or photo on TV or in the newspaper, ever.

    I don’t know either, but, just going by the enhanced possibliy of a gun carrier in public spaces in Israel or let’s say Texas there would have been a far better chance that this nut/or not a nut would have been shot dead on sight.
    The hint that he was “Asian” explains the MSM delay on the details. The poor fools can’t quite wraps their minds around that metanarrative deviation as only whites are domestic psychopaths.
    Ridng Greyhounds can be surreal. One of my kids a few years ago spent a sleepless night on one with a paranoid schizophrenic as a seatmate on his way to Washington DC, chattering endlessly, to deliver a letter to Congress to warn them about aliens impersonating dolphins at the National Zoo.
    It’s not for the faint of heart.

  40. Deepest condolences to the family now missing a loved one.
    I was at a social function once in a small town when one ‘fellow’ pulled a knife. Not sure who he was going to threaten because the knife was removed from his hands the second he hit the floor which happened about 5 seconds after he pulled the knife. A bunch of farm boys tackled, disarmed and held the would be attacker until the police showed up, 30 minutes later. Funniest part was the fact that the social continued as if nothing had happened.
    As might be suggested by the above account I tend to agree with the posters who suggest that as a society we have become too dependant on the “experts”.

    So, nothing clear yet.

  44. Have to agree with many above, intervention by civilians would have done no good at that point in this particular situation.
    Unless you could instantly and accurately respond as a trained professional and how could you possible even then, unless you could read this freaks mind?
    The people getting off and containing it was the best idea and the very best they could do from what I’ve gathered so far, sounds like they went through hell. Even disabling the bus was quick thinking, good on the driver.
    Also wish we could stop this waste of air by law.

  45. Well said, EBD. I never cease to be amazed by the capacity of our species to rush to judgement. It seems all to rare for people to just be able to say, “I don’t know yet, I don’t have a firm opinion yet, I don’t have the data yet”. Except perhaps for the homicide detectives involved, since the front line is pretty much up to them for now.
    But this is what the aggrandizing fear-mongering media sells, this rush to judgement, and they sell it because some people, indeed, some commenters in blogs, are themselves aggrandizing fear-mongers, and so they buy it.

  47. I agree with Joe, Tenebris, multirec etc – why did the rest of the passengers do nothing?
    The notion that you cannot help someone else unless you are an ‘expert’ in that field is pernicious and untenable; we’ve been socialized to be passive onlookers, dependent on The Officials, rather than responsible individuals who can look after ourselves and can help others when there are no Officials around.
    The statement that ‘it was probably too late’ is an excuse for inaction. As soon as it started, the guys sitting in front and nearby – should have grabbed him. As Joe says – it doesn’t take expertise; it takes a willingness to do something.
    Result? A young boy killed. Possibly, he could have been saved.

  48. A can of hairspray & a cigarette lighter could have made an effective weapon against this nutbar. Ditto a nice big book or even a full can of pop – especially if the pop gets shaken up & sprayed in the guy’s eyes.
    Part of the problem is that we all expect someone to come to our defense, rather than taking the situation into our own hands – because we truly are sheep.
    And yes, people do, on occasion, rise up. I saw a couple of small female cashiers take down a much larger robber armed with a semi-automatic gun in a Loblaws store in Newmarket, Ontario about 20 years ago. The ass never even made it past the cash registers with these little girls hanging on and thumping away at him.
    I tried to get away from a large scale bank robbery once to call the police – I gave up when the machine guns were pointed at my head, but at least I tried to do something.
    We do need to be vigilant.

  49. Why have they not released the accused name? Given the method of the killing, one might think it is religiously motivated and the killer’s name might be Mohammad Akmed or something similarly Islamic. Perhaps they are wanting to alert the Islamic community so the denials of the violent jihadist beliefs within Islamic communities can be again dished out.
    Consider how in the last month there were two cases of Muslims going beserk and using heavy machinery to attack Israelis. Don’t think this could not happen in Canada given the rabid anti-Muslim rhetoric which is regularly spouted by Imams throughout the Islamic world and on the Internet.
    This said, It could also just be a regular crazy, however why the silence on the name of the accused. Seems suspicious to me.

    Say you saw him praying to Allah while the bus was on break, and carrying a Koran?
    The question is rhetorical, given which site I’m at here.
    So why would it be different for a Native? He hates your guts just as much as the Muslim does. You’re going to risk your life to save a guy who hates your guts? And how do you know in the split second that you have to decide that he didn’t do something to provoke it, like steal a large sum of money or drugs? We’re sacrificing our lives to defend thieves now?
    The Native community would probably laugh at you if you died trying to save one of theirs. Yeah, it’s that bad folks.
