leftdog, You are incorrect. Yellowcake right now is selling for between $70 and $90 / lb. (check out any commodities site or the NYBOT). It peeked at $138/lb. last year (June) because of a flood at a Sask. mine.
Cameco probably paid Iraq over $70M for the 550 tons of yellowcake (and probably got a deal).
This price is going to increase again because of the nuclear reactor breakout happening in India and China. Saudi Arabia, UAE, etc., have also purchased several reactors from Areva (the monster French/Euro company) because oil is too precious for them to use domestically.
550 tons is not enough to support an entire nuclear energy industry for very long but it is enough to develop a bunch of weapons and we know that Cameco (the biggest uranium producer in the world) did not supply this to them.
550 tonnes of yellow cake. Assuming (BIG if)successful enrichment effort(isn’t that what Iran is doing?), that would yield enough weapons-grade highly enriched uranium for about 60 critical mass (i.e. go boom) nukes. Like the one dropped on Hiroshima…

I tend to believe a man named Mahdi Obeidi, who Saddam put in charge of Iraq’s nuclear program.
He even wrote a book about it, which I’ve just dug out.
