  1. Under the category, “is there anything Obama can’t do?”
Not only can stop the rising seas, he can drive the Queen E.
“If you’ve taken the Queen Elizabeth Way from Toronto to Niagara Falls you know what Barack Obama, the potential next leader of the free world, faced in August 2004 when he made the sometimes white-knuckle drive with his wife Michelle.”

  2. Ice on Mars:
There is water ice on Mars within reach of the Mars Phoenix Lander, NASA scientists announced Thursday.
Photographic evidence settles the debate over the nature of the white material seen in photographs sent back by the craft. As seen in lower left of this image, chunks of the ice sublimed (changed directly from solid to gas) over the course of four days, after the lander’s digging exposed them.

  3. I have been doing a bit of thinking on this ‘green shift’. Dion admits that putting a carbon tax on the oil companies will cause them to raise their prices to us. He then ‘offsets’the extra expense that we will suffer by taking the taxes that the gov’t collects and after taking a bit off the top for administration and sundry expenditures, returns it to the us.If you pay little tax,and/or have children, you recieve a larger chunk than you paid into it.Everyone else takes a hit.Pollution stays the same, because the oil companies have passed on their tax bill to the consumer, and are still doing quite well. Am I missing something here,or is this a ‘made-in-Canada’ Kyoto plan?

  4. a bit off the top for administration?
does the gun registry still define… a bit for administration ?
    I don’t think I’m missing anything here, that I haven’t already seen. I don’t think you’re missing anything.
I think, Mr. Dion is missing a large chunk of gray matter.

  5. Wendy Mesley on The National tonite: “Can Stephane Dion save the planet?” I just about gagged. Come on! Can I wake up from this bad dream NOW, PLEASE???

  6. Walleyj; “He then ‘offsets’the extra expense that we will suffer…” It doesn’t matter how Stephan plans to return the “carbon tax” no one will gain. Any tax on TRANSPORTATION will multiply as it winds it’s way through the economy. We will pay higher prices for food, energy (fuel is transported), transit, cabs, air fare, dry goods, drugs, etc., etc..
This is the important wringer he’s not mentioning. It will cause INFLATION.

  7. Dion Says his “Green Shaft” is “revenue neutral”. That’s shifty words for the government is going to spend every single penny it takes in carbon taxes.
He says the money will “go back to the taxpayers”- DUH – don’t all taxes go back to taxpayers in some form of goods or services?
The problem is this – it is NOT revenue “neutral to the people who pay the higher prices for pretty well everything.
Don’t you think it really sounds like Dion wants to be a good little Marxist modern day Robin Hood – taking money from those who work hard to make it and funnelling it back to the “poor” – those who don’t (or can’t) work hard to make more money to “offset” the higher prices they will also pay.
Can you say “Bye Bye economic investment in Canada?
Can you say Bye Bye to our soon to be non competitive export market.
Bye Bye to tourists who won’t want to pay the higher prices on everything.
Bye Bye to Alberta which already has a $15 per tonne carbon tax on industry (paid into a fund to pay for innovative environmental initiatives NOT to funnel to social programs) and Alberta already has a carbon cap and trade program between industries WITHIN Alberta instead of subsidizing China or clean hyro or closing coal stations in Ontario.
Sheesh. Are Canadians stupid????? And the media lapping this up – are they totally without any common sense????

  8. Dion is going to take the carbon tax money up front and then at the end of the year give you a non-refundable paper tax credit. If you don’t need the credit, you get zero, nadda, zippo, nothing. The poor pay again. Dion would make a better shoe salesman. Let the eastern libs pay the tax if they want to be sucked into this scam.
Once again the CBC is giving the scammer a platform to peddle his green slime. Who is going to be fooled by the newest lib scam of the month.

  9. This, incidentally, is where one of the government’s other consumer-friendly ideas starts looking like a wooden horse full of lawyers. The bill stipulates that certain statutory penalties for copyright infringement will be lowered to $500, down from the current legislation that can see people run up fines of tens of thousands.
It’s a fantastic piece of strategy. As the American experience has demonstrated, if you want a public-relations fiasco on your hands, sue a single mother (or a 12-year-old, or a puppy) for an obscene amount of money. But $500 is a fine that flies beneath the media’s carefully honed outrage radar. It’s the kind of fee that’s easier to pay than to fight – and that’s what people will do.

Must be a media conspiracy…Prentice couldn’t possibly be THAT much of a lightweight. Especially after 10 years as a lawyer in the Indian Industry. Despite Caledonia and Bill C-61, hey, the man’s a giant. Why would you criticize?

  10. Remember Chretien’s words, “Read my lips-no more GST!!” They’ve has a sudden change of heart!Dion isn’t taxing Carbon Dioxide. He’s taxing Alberta and Saskatchewan’s oil to subsidize the losses that past Liberal governments have bestowed upon the auto and other related industries in Ontario. Mostly because of labour unions and high taxes. Today, cars are built in Mexico. Watch this materialize into a western separation movement. And when they lower the Liberal Logo, oops, Maple Leaf, I’ll be whistling Dixie! Screw you Dion!

  11. Harper needs to suggest Ontario Lib’s adopt Dingbats new carbon tax with a provincial credit and see how popular that becomes. This could be done province by province for those provinces that think it is a good idea. I think someone has been spending to much time with the globalists at the Bohemian Grove or the Cosmos Club or with the Bilderbergs and fried to many brain cells. Sounds like another Kissinger idea.

  12. Every time I see Dion on deeTeeVee, I see strings. I see Howdy Doody, except that Howdy was actually made of wood, rather than just acting wooden, and Howdy was a lot more friendly–and so were his sidekicks.
Now, we have a two-pronged attack on Canadians from the Librano First Couple:
Dee-Yawn: His Green Shift carbon tax (have you ever seen adults making such fools of themselves as the Clapping Librano$?)
    and
Janine Krieber: Her attack on freedom of speech: “The real definition of terrorism…is ‘an action that is bringing terror [duh].’…The problem I see, for the moment, coming next is that we bring back abortion discussions into society. We had problems before and if we bring that back too severely it will bring conflict.”

  13. Just got caught in the filter: I wonder if it was the mention of the Librano First Couple and their two-pronged attack on Canadians: Dion’s Green Shift Carbon Tax and Krieber’s recent attack on free speech in her comments in Peterborough on NOT bringing back the abortion debate as it might lead to te**orism?

  14. There are some interesting links today for various SDA-ers at yargb.blogspot.com (Flares into Darkness), such as
    – First ever photos of a laser pulse,
    – British news on Taleban cleared from Kandahar area (why don’t we hear that in Canada?),
    – something on the HRC’s,
    – the GM Volt (just for TG),
    – etc.

  15. My original comment:

  16. Lone Ranger, lets not forget BC’s coal, Newfoundland’s oil and Nova Scotia’s natural gas.
What part of the country is strangely unaffected by this plan?????????
    Ontario and Quebec!!! Quell surprise!!!

  17. Soccermom… that is nothing at around 30 minutes in, when she was talking to Dion about how to sell the Tax, she said…
“Stephen Harper thinks people are…. stupid”
Ummmm, I don’t think those are his exact words, maybe he was only talking about you…

  18. Eatery bars council after taxes tripled
Like Seinfeld’s soup Nazi, a restaurant owner in Newfoundland has a message for his town council.
Hike my taxes and no soup for you, is the message from Wallace McKay, who banned town councillors from eating in his restaurant a year ago.
It started when McKay’s tax bill tripled to $9,000 in January 2007, he said, forcing him to close Eddie’s Restaurant and Gas Bar for six months and throwing 15 people out of work in South Brook, population 500.
“It caused some hard feelings,” ……….
…”So I wrote (the councillors) a letter. I said, look, go elsewhere. I don’t want my staff going through the stress of dealing with you.”….

  19. Goldstein cuts through the smog/fog/bog with Occam’s Razor.
The “Green Shift” is a Global Warming-Kyoto-Tax-Carbon swindle; a socialist Pyramid Scheme.
Who is at the apex/peak of the pyramid? Mao Stlong’s Red China.
    …-
“Politicians have us right where they want us — naively believing if we can replace enough incandescent light bulbs with fluorescents in our homes and hang enough laundry outside to dry, we can save the planet.
This was never about saving the planet. This is about taking even more money from our pockets and transferring it to governments and big business. And it’s working.”

  20. Exactly. Dion’s Carbon Plan has NOTHING to do with the environment. Nothing. Except to base its funding on those carbon emissions. Dion NEEDS those carbon emissions. He taxes them, and then hands that money over to ‘the poor’..and buys their votes.
Does any of this carbon tax go to enable our factories to install non-emitting systems? No.
Does any of this carbon tax go to enable new factories to be built that don’t emit as much carbon? No.
Does any of this carbon tax go to research on developing ‘cleaner energy’? No.
So, how does this carbon tax help factories to build systems to reduce their emissions? It doesn’t.
We built those factories some years ago. We who built them are Canadians. We aren’t Evil Polluters. We built them according to legislated standards of the day. Now, the govt wants them changed. Fine. So, why not tax us and then, pool that money into low, low interest loans to enable us to build the costly low emission structures?
Dion’s carbon plan does not address any strategies, any tactics of reducing emissions (which he incorrectly calls ‘pollution’ because it’s a more Evil Word).
Dion NEEDS those emissions. Needs them to continue. Why? Because his whole plan is a tax grab. Particularly on the West. His agenda is to get money..to give to individuals and low income families. To buy his way back into power.
But – what if those factories manage to reduce their emissions? How will Dion fund his Buy A Vote Plan? He’ll have to increase income taxes to do that. Oh – and by the way – his reduction of income taxes by 1% in his plan is peanuts.
The increased costs of his taxing our factories will trickle down to us like a flood. All our costs will increase. Not just heating. But food, clothing, housing, and wages. All our costs will increase.
Why? Because he’s not interested in carbon reduction. His plan says NOTHING about enabling our factories to reduce these emissions. No money for them. No help for our factories.
It’s a scam. He’s looking for a means of gathering in money and more money – to Buy Votes.

  21. Follow the money…oh, surprise, surprise!
It leads directly to Maurice Strong in China (where Piggy Martin and Jean Cretin are hanging out these days).
More Librano dirty tricks to keep the Deranged Dystopian Dominion…well, deranged and dystopian.
Canadians need to WAKE UP–AND FAST.

  22. Not just votes, ET.
Dion is on the record of having made $80b in new spending commitments, without any way of funding them.

  23. Hebert knows what the “Green Shift” is.
    It’s PET’s NEP.
PET’s National Energy Program has been resurrected from the PET Cemetery.
The bones are re-jigged into the Red-Green Show.
The Liberals are gambling with the breakup of Canada.
Westerners and Newfoundlanders! You are the target. The Liberals are on the attack. How will you react?

“the energy-producing provinces that would bear the brunt of the carbon tax are not only the biggest source of industrial greenhouse emissions in the country; their output may also soon be all that stands between Canada and a full-fledged recession.”

  24. The Constitution grants the sole power of direct taxation to the Provinces, Dion’s tax is illegal under the constitution, there are no truckloads of paper and laws to allow this as there is for income tax, illegal pure and simple.

  25. What really upsets me is the complete lack of common sense displayed by politicians. Why damage our economy on something that supposidly, maybe, possibly, somehow, hurts our planet. Politicians have the scientific maturuty of a child in kindergarden.

  26. batb:
In the article we have Ms. Krieber stating:
‘Terrorism should also be thought of as a “chess play,” Krieber said. ‘
I’m glad Ms. Krieber thinks it is chess play. When the terrorists come to her home and announce “Check Mate” she will find that the game is definitively over.
At this point she can tell Divine Providence why she was so monumentally stupid.
    Ms. Krieber is incredibly naive.
How about I import my lengthy multicultural heritage as a descendant of the HUNS? That should go over real well. We’ll give Ms. Krieber all the “Check Mate” demonstrations she could possibly endure.
This of course may require some Justice Dept exemptions from Criminal Code provisions.
Yep, our old friends Rape, Pillage, and Plunder are merely “playing chess”.
I’m sure the recipients of Genghis Khan’s felicitations also viewed their sufferings as “chess play”.
When Ms. Krieber’s frontal lobe engages please let me know!
Maybe she needs an unescorted pass to Taliban country to rectify her assessment of terrorism as ‘CHESS PLAY’!!!
With the recent 1000 man jail break in Kandahar, they will probably be setting up their ‘chess pieces’ right now.
Well Ms. Krieber are you a player or not?

  27. One outcome of all this nonsense spouted by the Librano couple and their political, judicial and media running dogs is, even if they don’t succeed, they’re creating increasing mental anguish for any one with common sense. Can we take them to the HRC for that?
Soccermom, I agree it’s a really bad dream and I think it’s getting worse.

  28. I knew Susan Riley was a Liberal toady but this is ridiculous!!
You can read her Ottawa Citizen column, “Dion delivers” over at National Newswatch, but if you’re prone to indigestion, don’t go there.
She describes Dion yesterday as “confident, coherent and positive”, while calling Jason Kenney “sneering” and saying that Harper’s front bench appeals to “fear, self-interest and cynicism.”
How obvious can you possibly be? And for this she gets paid?
She might as well have a Liberal banner at the top of her column.
    Disgusting tripe!!

  29. So, a federal liberal wants to put an extra tax on fuels used to heat our homes.(and with global cooling upon us, it will break the backs of the poor and the elderly)
A provincial liberal(chimpy mcuseless)wants to control our thermostats from some commie den.
So, if the province of Ontario gets short on cash, chimpy just has to tweak our heat up a degree or two, and the money will flow into the gov’t coffers.
The irony here is that these high energy prices actually help a right wing, red neck free marketeer like myself.
Good deals on boats, trucks and seadoos. I pass on my increased costs to my lower income tenants. We use the wife’s honda for running around in. I upgraded all of my furnaces and windows years ago.
Keep it coming, you leftarded jerk off artists. The only people you are hurting are the one’s that you purport to represent.

  30. “CBS News sinks to new low; publishes crackpot global warming story, attributes it to Associated Press, kills it with no retraction
    19 06 2008
Yesterday I posted a story from CBS News: Quake n’ Bake: Global Warming Causes More Energetic Earthquakes?
The main headline was this: Seismic Activity 5 Times More Energetic Than 20 Years Ago Because Of Global Warming
This drew a lot of attention because of the total lack of verifiable science associated with it. I posted some graphs of USGS data showing that the opposite was true, that recent earthquake energy was actually less that in the early 1900’s, and several commenters pointed out that the source of the story, a Dr. Tom Chalko, has some less than stellar associations with what I would describe as “new age” mysticism, such as Thiaoouba Prophecy and “reading your Aura”. He also writes a dandy piece entitled “Global Warming: Can Earth EXPLODE?” which is linked to a website he runs about “bioresonance” where you can buy a “bioresonant” shirt.
So with that sort of science background available on the web for anyone to see in a few seconds of searching, one wonders how CBS News was duped into running a story like this without even bothering to check into the author. This makes the “historic” Microsoft Word documents used by Dan Rather to discredit President Bush’s National Guard Service look like a peer reviewed science paper.
    The story gets weirder.”

The story gets weirder. CBS attributed the story on their website to the Associated Press (AP) and you can see that clearly in the screen capture of the story below. Odd thing though, there is no byline, no story author as you usually see with an AP story:”
