Thank You, CIC

ISLAMIC CONGRESS AND LAW STUDENTS TO MAKE PUBLIC SETTLEMENT OFFER TO MACLEAN’S ON HUMAN RIGHTS COMPLAINTS
Jonathan Kay;

Come to think of it, it’s fair to say that the Maclean’s imbroglio has been one of the biggest shots in the arm to Canadian conservatives in general. It’s turned red-meat right-winger Ezra Levant into a star blogger and a free-speech hero with brand-name recognition in the United States, turned Steyn’s name into a household word, created a debate within the Jewish community over its traditionally doctrinaire support for blanket hate-speech laws (Ezra for CJC president, anyone?), shone a light on the amateurish shenanigans of Canada’s human rights commissions, driven a powerful movement for reform of said commissions, and generally served to marginalize the pro-censorship lobby to the point that its main defender is now a disgruntled former journalist who fills his blog with unhinged conspiracy theories about how everyone who favours free speech is a racist.

More – there’s a big round up of reaction at Shaidle’s place.

“I hope [Steyn] takes the letter, crumbles it up, and dips it in a cup of ketchup and then eats it right there on stage in front of them. Oh God, hear my prayer, please let this happen.”

  1. Maybe we should start up a fund so that the “disgruntled former journalist who fills his blog with unhinged conspiracy theories” can get some proper medical treatment.
Wonder if they allow guitar playing when you are locked up in a rubber room ?

  2. The positions of the principals in this story are all clearly staked out. An objective newcomer will need about ten seconds to see Jonathan Kay’s piece and reference to “…former disgruntled journalist…” is just more tit for tat. Interesting that when the terrifying teeth of the human rights commisions are examined there is very little flesh and blood dangling.
This was nothing more than a nuisance suit to begin with. Can any of you really quote Steyn’s Freedom Five handle without feeling slightly embarrassed?

  3. its main defender is now a disgruntled former journalist who fills his blog with unhinged conspiracy theories about how everyone who favours free speech is a racist.
No, don’t tell me it’s true! I would not have ever thought this would happen. Kathy — Perhaps he will wash it down with a shot of red bull.

  4. “Wonder if they allow guitar playing”
Good point, Fred, but don’t flatter him – it’s just bass guitar, i believe.
Seriously, this is great news and proof of what can be done, and will be done.

  5. So what is this huge public show really going to be about? The CIC all of a sudden becoming publicly contrite? This should be good! You can bet the CIC is going to try to exact a whole lot of public groveling as happened with the Western Standard Blog vs Soharwardy issue.
The latter held a press conference and pretty much publicly rubbed the WS’s (new owner, M. Johnston)) nose in it while agreeing to withdraw his filing. The condescension of it all. The issue was about a commenter’s posting and the WS being held to account for it.
Yes, this particular issue went away but the ON/BC filings are not likely to go away quite so easily – nor should they.

  6. This ain’t no peace pipe smokin’ session being proposed. They will make an offer in such a manner so as to claim “see you’re all islamophobes” whether the so called ‘offer’ is acceptable or not. Can you say submission?

  7. Since it was “nothing more than a nuisance suit”, Johnny, that means you won’t mind covering Maclean’s and co. have shelled out to attorneys over this — at billings around $450/hour — whereas this has cost Elmo and friends a grand total of $0?
Oh wait, I forgot: you’re an old hippie loser who plays folk music and who has never made 450/week, let alone an hour.

  8. Kathy: my guess is that with your incessant blog panhandling you’ve got things covered. Plus tips. I think the bigger challenge, for you, is going to be retirement now that your 15 minutes of fame is passing into history.

  9. I wonder if this thing will be something other than the climb-down that most are expecting.
No matter, I still want the various HRC’s de-commissioned and I want the CIC to be subjected to sensitivity training – first up, a session on Mogan David appreciation.

  10. Johnny come lately! Kathy has more handlers in her corner than you, a minion of the lower species,

  11. Well isn’t that precious??
The two faced self serving cretins want to host a staged event to present a ‘settlement’.
Anyone care to bet it’s going to include unconditional demands like:
Admitting that the article “insulted Islam”!
    Apologizing unconditionally for “insulting Islam”!
Admitting that muslims and Islam are good people and have every right to spread their bilious doctrine!
    etc… etc….etc….

  12. i see nothing but taquiya and hudna….but it’s still a victory of sorts is it not ?…..but they’ll be back in some other manifestation i reckon.
i wonder if allowing us or them (i could care less whom)to stone hall and mcgovern as the judas goatesses will be part of the deal ?

  13. johnny maudlin – parasite in paradise, wish someone would do something with his pair of nuts.but it looks like he has already bred out of his shallow gene pool.
personally I want Steyn and Ezra to expose the the whole herr HRC’s scam, no truce.no prisoners.no sharia

  14. Johnny. Oh, Johnny. Don’t you have something better to do? Like, clean the blackboards for teacher.
I only ask ’cause you’re one of the few that seems to be able to stand the finger nails on the blackboard sound of the HRC investigations crew without wincing.

  15. Is this a plea bargain in reverse? Accept nothing but full apology from the bastards and payment of all costs they’ve caused.
They have to be made well aware we have free speech in Canada and can freely express opinions and facts.
If that doesn’t fit in with their agenda of hate they have the option of getting their arses on the first plane back to whatever Islamic paradise they came from. We’ve had enough of these pukes coming here dictating and demanding rights they never dreamed of in the hell holes they fled.

  16. Yes. we have much bigger fish to fry than bantering with twits.
Our next step should be working to slaying the real dragon, HRC’s. They represent a complete oxymoron in this country which proudly spouts the Trudeau Charter of Rights and Freedoms by taking away our basic right to free speech and even thought as Ezra highlighted.
Pretty scary stuff. Is the Conservative government taking notes?

  17. As good as the news is I would be cautious.
This kinnda beast is not that easy to slay. They will fight back. Even a baby rabbit will bite back if backed into a corner.
I have never heard of victory coming at no price as well. Keep the funds moving no matter what. Most of these folks are not rich by any means besides the fact by proxy there fighting all our battles with its attendant woes.
I will rejoice when I see this colossus of Inequity fall in on itself. Threw the sheer gravity of hubris, touched with a bad case of madness by its adherents saying & doing shady things only the night life loves.
Just another step , a big one mind you. To remove this stain of injustice from our Nation, stir love of liberty up in our citizens minds, & promote the individuals view, over the collective control forced model by group ethos with changing values.

  18. Keep the focus on dismantling the hrc’s. It won’t be long now. They are seen in the same light as sharia. As long as they just torched a christian here and there, no one paid that much attention to them.
The hrc’s are now seen Canada wide as an instrument of the islamist to bring in their special brand of sharia, thanks to Ezra and Steyn.
The more the left defend the hrc’s and their unsavory antics, the more the Canadian people will turn against them.
    Keep up the good work.

  19. Jonathan Kay: “…the Maclean’s imbroglio has… shone a light on the amateurish shenanigans of Canada’s human rights commissions…”
I’m not sure I’d call how Canada’s HRCs operate–seemingly inciting hateful/negative responses at blog sites they are either investigating or INTENDING to investigate–“amateurish shenanigans.”
Their modus operandi has seriously endangered all Canadians’ rights to freedom of speech (and religion)–all at the expense of the taxpayers of this country.
While it may be true that the HRCs seem to operate in an amateurish way (unprofessional would be more accurate), the term “shenanigans,” which implies light-hearted fun and games, hardly applies to the deadly threat the HRCss pose to democratic freedoms in Canada.

  20. “I hope [Steyn] takes the letter, crumbles it up, and dips it in a cup of ketchup and then eats it right there on stage…”.
I couldn’t disagree more. Kathy is wrong on this one. This is totally, like, not the right approach. Wrong on so many levels it hurts. Wrong, wrong, wrong.
He should dip it in BBQ sauce.

  21. I’d like to see them turn the tables and file HRC complaints against the Canadian Islamic Congress.

  22. We will all live to see the day, when the hrc’s are pulled before a court of inquiry, humilated and dismantled.
Publicly that has already happened, but a full inquiry should be held. We can’t have this happening in Canada. A pulbic inquiry would ensure it never happened again.

  23. -its main defender … fills his blog with unhinged conspiracy theories
The punk orchestra leader also has trouble counting with his socks on.
“I …. met with the Osgoode students and talked to them,…. Ken Whyte et al. ….(should give) a bit of space to reflect the views of the HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF CANADIANS ”

  24. *
“RD says… Even a baby rabbit will bite back if
    backed into a corner.”

nah, dude, it won’t… but, if it’s any help, a baby
raccoon will tear your face off…
    and then
    chow down on the bits.
hey… i live in farm country.

  25. OMMAG The offer:
Given that the Ontario Human Rights Commission acknowledged your guilt in their last press release: Submit to Islam and we will drop the other suites…. and pants, but not the burkhas, tho; that just won’t do. It is better women die in fires than escape uncovered.

  26. My guess, the CBC will be there in their burqas at this scheduled public event as willing quislings to give balance to the story.
    Count on it.

  27. I think JM is using Kate to get his hit counter up above five thousand, three hundred,vs eight million, six hundred seventeen thousand, nine hundred and nineteen.

  28. This will just be more media posturing and pandering for sympathy. Expect nothing more.
I pray that Macleans doesn’t see an easy way out, cave, and give them an inch of typespace.
I do hope that Macleans attends and reports on the event as objectively as possible. And puts them on the cover.
This is only a TEENY little victory. The real battle is to bring the public’s attention to what is being done to their liberty and free speech in the name of “human rights”.

  29. Put the offer in a ham sandwich and while eating it offer them a bite.
These Islamists aren’t going to give up. That’s not Islam. As with every country they’ve invaded they keep agitating, making demands, claiming discrimination, until their numbers are strong enough to start the violence and intimidation. It’s their M/O.
The best thing to do is eliminate the tools they find so convenient. Like the HRC’s. Next create laws to neuter their political ambitions. Then make a concerted effort to expose, embarrass and shut down the dhimmi appeasers.
Perhaps they’ll eventually get the message that they are not welcome and return to the dar al Hell they came from. And good riddance.

  30. RW – Given that the Ontario Human Rights Commission acknowledged your guilt in their last press release: Submit to Islam and we will drop the other suites…. and pants, but not the burkhas, tho; that just won’t do. It is better women die in fires than escape uncovered.
RW – yes yes yes infadels…slit tja throats of all infadels…

  31. neo:
Than we & Jimmy Carter are the only two with the same experiance of said rabbit attacks. Really!!!
I work for parks. We uncovered a nest of bunnies. They fought back. For the tender hearted it was only to move them from a construction site. Thank goodness for leather gloves.

  32. Good lord Kate, do ya think maybe you need to grow up a titch? Stop feeding the troll?! Man for someone who is all about free speech and dissent you are kinda short on patience/tolerance unless you and the mousecateers are doing the speaking.
My comments were certainly no more off topic, inflamatory or just plain dumb than the average on this thread. I’m simply suggesting this whole thing has been very good for business; for you and Kathy, for Ezra and for Steyn. Why does that grate on you so much? Geez!
Jan:I’m not a fan of human rights commissions, and did not support the work of same in these circumstances. My contribution here (for some reason not appreciated by the boss…) was that there has been a huge overstatement of the impact these investigations have had on freedom of speech in Canada.
No legal precedents have been established. No bamboo shoved under fingernails. The Freedom Five may even have their own cartoon show soon, everyone draped in capes, hands on hips. Business is booming.

  33. Jim: the bounce, hit wise, from my comments here is not worth discussing. My blog is humble. Great, but humble. I have a very loyal very small group of readers. Warren Kinsella’s promotion has produced an increase in readers, regular readers, but nothing I’ve done here has created anything other than very short term buzz…
And what, exactly, is wrong with that? I don’t get y’all. My comments attract attention. Is that a crime? Like Kate suggested, no one is forced to read or respond. To blame someone participating on a forum for creating controversy by virtue of disagreeing with the prevailing points of view is sort of irrational, actually.

  34. Thanks Richard. It’s actually heartening that you disobeyed the direct order you were given to not feed me. Burp. And I’m going, but before I do, let me offer this brief translation: stop feeding the troll means; “I decree that you do not respond to the idea that has been put forth by the identified participant on this thread…”
    A bit People’s Repulic of China, isn’t it? Goodbye…

  35. obtuse: adjective
    1. not quick or alert in perception, feeling, or intellect; not sensitive or observant; dull.
    2. not sharp, acute, or pointed; blunt in form.

  36. The only reason for the press session that can be reasonably expected is for the Islamic congress and law students, should be complete and unconditional apology to Mark Steyn and Maclean’s magazine. It may continue as an apology to the Canadian public for offending the tradition of freedom and customs among which is included the right to offend, whoever wants to be offended.
If the news conference is about the superiority of said institution and individuals, the press agents should perhaps choose to go for beer of something.

  37. I think that it would be fitting if Whyte takes the offer, lays it on the floor and places a very firm and dirty footprint upon it.

  38. Glenn, I’d like to see Steyn wrap their settlement in bacon and make THEM eat it. I’d even drive into Hogtown to see that, yes I would.
Say, I wonder how all them CIC fellers feel about living in a city called Hogtown?

  39. Johnny Maudlin sez: “My blog is humble. Great, but humble.” Wow. Lib double-speak at it’s best. Great, humble, which is it???

  40. Yes,Johnny to paraphrase a truly great man, something you libs know nothing about, you have a lot to be humble about.

  41. Jonny ment BUMBLE!!!!!
I should take my two pet potbelly pigs and go to the press conferance:-)))
