31 Replies to “19″ Of Springtime For Nanaimo”

  1. I gotta say, I love Nanaimo for producing 2 things:

    1. Nanaimo bars
    2. Diana Krall

    Mmmmm. Both are tasty.

  2. My hat is off to the people of Nanaimo. Looks like they have defeated global warming. From the all appearances in the photograph, they appear to have dramatically reduced their population as well.
At this very moment, MSM reporters must be rushing to the city, eager to learn it’s secret and spread the good word.
A made-in-Canada solution we can all be proud of.

  3. Alberta is not much better and it’s -10C on April 20, 2008. That’s pushing into our now usual 5 weeks of summer.

  4. 20C and sunny in Winterpeg today…sorry, I can’t help myself… :p …wait.. a foot of snow later this week….

  5. Oh come on you guys ‘ya know it’s because the polar ice caps are melting and all that extra moisture makes more clouds and hence places that didn’t get snow for the winter are having it now, or something like that.
/yep, they’ll fix a graph to make it work
Does Nanaimo normally get a lot of snow for winter, er spring?

  6. I’m just waiting for the usual “One cannot look at these isolated weather events as a sign GW is not occuring” posts.

  7. AndyCanuck, that’s the view from my front yard. The view from the back is 180 sq.mi. of ocean and islands, the Sunshine Coast mountains and the city of Nanaimo.
We’re up on Mt. Benson at about 1,000 ft., hence the 19″ of snow (Nanaimo proper only got about 8″).
So given the upside of livig here, I guess we can’t bitch too much about the unseasonable snowfall.
As for the comments about “what’s in a Nanaimo Bar” – we resemble that remark.

  8. 3 days ago I was going to get my yard power raked . Got a foot of heavy wet snow on it now and so does the freakin sidewalk . I’d wait for a chinook but the by-law dude is a power tripping freak. Oh well, the cactus growing all over the place here need the moisture. And i need the exercise.

  9. AnfyCanuck, that’s a photo from our front yard.
You should see the back: 180 sq. miles of ocean, islands, Sunshine Coast mountains and the city below.
We’re up about 1,000 ft – hence the 19″ of snow. The city itself got about 8″. Given the upside of living here, I reckon we shouldn’t bitch too much about a little unseasonable weather, though.
BTW, that unkind remark about “what’s in a Nanaimo Bar?” – we resemble that remark!

  10. See the funny thing is that although this weather sucks (I’m in Alberta) it’s NOT unusual. When I was in university you always had one of two extremes at this time of year. You either went to write your final exams wearing a toque or wearing shorts. None of this is surprising. But leave it to the hand-wringers to take normal year to year changes in the climate and turn it into the end of the world.
Here’s a question for our Goreites… Can you name ONE year that was the same as the last year temperature and weather-wise?
    Didn’t think so…

  11. NoGuff
We are over in Oakridge area and we managed a healthy 14″ by 6:00 am – couldn’t see the water for the fog though……….
Couldn’t believe I was brushing snow off of my gorgeous blooming rhodo’s.

  12. Well, as the saying goes in Alberta, “wait five minutes, the weather will change”. This snowfall will be great for the crops, so much as I am ready for summer, I can wait five more minutes.

  13. That’s not snow; it’s some of the polar ice cap and Arctic ice shelf that have broken away, floated down past Alaska, and landed on this poor person’s yard.
Freakish? Not even close. I’ve seen snow July 1st while driving toward Whistler from Vancouver for a picnic, and ice storms in Ontario in mid-May.

  14. The “little woman” and me bought us a place in Mesa this last (looks like current) winter. Nice that you “northern” folk are having these freak occurences so us “snow birds” can experience winter every now and then when we get back “up here” in time to file our tax returns and all that.
Just trying to get into the retirement mode, you know?
    Bob

  15. Sorry, Diana Krall is one of the most overrated singers I have known in my 25 year career as a professional musician. She’s perfectly fine as a performer but not up to the hype.
If you think Nanaimo girls are tasty, you must love unwashed, unshaved armpits and the reek of pot smoke.

  16. It was snowing here in Victoria yesterday morning. Quite unusual for this time of year, but not entirely unheard off (and rather pleasant, I must say). But remember this is “weather” we’re talking about… not “climate” — there’s a difference.

  17. Unseasonably warm here in Toronto. And since anecdotal evidence seems to rule the day when folks get on this whole subject, I expect to hear that the world is ending if this keeps up for another week.

  18. My shovel and snow brush are still in my trunk: think I’ll leave them there a while longer–just in case.
But, NoGuff, it sure looks pretty!

  19. Rick McGinnis has it right. remeber two years ago in january…it was freezing out West and El Nino blew in some wonderful weather that made Toronto, Monteal and Ottawa positively springlike.
So what was the news….AGW, reduce greenhouse Gases Now, Al Gore is a visionary….
So it has been unusually cold in Ontario until this last week….one more week and the centre of all media will conveniently forget the winter and talk about
    1) Drought
    2) Low lake levesl (they are fine now, they forget the story)
    3) smog alerts
    4) Global warming caused by greenhouse gases (with some side story that most of them come from Alberta and the US, in others words it isnt us)
Give it 7 to 10 days and if still above average it will start.

  20. Doug said: “Sorry, Diana Krall is one of the most overrated singers I have known in my 25 year career as a professional musician.”
Yeah, sure, Doug ….. you’re right and all those critics are wrong and she got all those awards in error.

  21. When you’re right, you’re right, and Doug is right about Ms. Krall, I’m afraid.
As for critics and awards, I only need to point at the Oscars to refute any such tropes about their innate wisdom, I think.

  22. Hey AL GORE,DAVID SUZUKI,JAMES LOVELOCK,GREENPEACE,WORLD WILDLIFE FUND and the rest of you eco-freaks pay close attention to all that snow THEN GET LOST

  23. …i drove up in that Global Warming stuff to Edmonton on Saturday.
Good thing, my eco-car drove steady through the drifts and slush.
    Yep, my eco-Ford F150 4X4 Lariat 5.4L Tritron.
