Christians told: Give up carbon for Lent
Two senior Church of England Bishops have called on people to give up carbon rather than chocolate for Lent.
They want to drive home the climate change message to churchgoers by encouraging them to cut their energy use.

Has anyone noticed the story regarding Justin Trudeau giving a speech in Edmonton about learning a second language?
I haven’t been able to find a direct quote but a couple I have seen intimate that he said: “expecting others to learn your own language impedes your ability to reach out to the world in areas where English isn’t spoken. ” – Ottawa Sun – News National and World Feb. 12. Other news sources don’t mention the “where english isn’t spoken”
Couldn’t let the hypocrisy go by unnoticed.

FBI now involved in gas station explosion.
Tampa, Florida – Many questions are left surrounding the death of a young Palestinian man. And, the FBI wants answers.
22-year-old Farid Karaka was burned alive after a gas station explosion early Wednesday morning on Busch Boulevard.
How did it happen?
Why was Karaka at a local Citgo mechanic’s garage at almost midnight. The garage was closed. He had just left friends at a local coffee shop and was en route to meet them at another location.

I was forced to marry my cousin – it’s normal in my culture, but SO WRONG
These days Khaleda Begum, 25, hardly leaves the confines of her one-bedroom flat.
And when she does, her heart thumps and she looks over her shoulder in terror. For, in the eyes of her Muslim family, Khaleda has done the unthinkable.
Disgusted by her arranged marriage to a cousin – a suitor found for her by her father – she has fled her family home and now, fearful of reprisals, lives under police protection.

…Du’aa was taken to the home of Sheikh Sulaiman Sulaiman, the senior Yazidi figure in the village.
…A 65-year-old uncle, Salim, a science teacher, backed the head of their tribe, Omar Hamko, 73, in demanding that she be killed to “cleanse the family honour”.
Her father would not countenance it. He proposed that she be married to a cousin and moved to Syria.”

Muslim leader drops Ezra Levant cartoon complaint – Western Standard publisher plans to launch a civil lawsuit
Woo hoo! Ezra kicks ass (noted boys’ washroom photographer does not).
“Over the two years that we have gone through the process, I understand that most Canadians see this as an issue of freedom of speech, that that principle is sacred and holy in our society,” said Soharwardy, president of the Islamic Supreme Council of Canada.
“I believe Canadian society is mature enough not to absorb the messages that the cartoons sent. Only a very small fraction of Canadian media decided to publish those cartoons.”
Mr. Levant said he isn’t buying Mr. Soharwardy’s promise, calling it a “temporary, tactical truce.”
“I don’t believe him. He thought this would be easy to do, just sic the human rights commission on me and it would be done. But I decided to fight back,” said Mr. Levant.
“He’s hurting right now. . . . What he’s now saying he is going to do is not a true reflection of his feelings.”
Mr. Levant said he plans to launch a civil lawsuit against Mr. Soharwardy to recover the tens of thousands of dollars he said he has spent battling the complaint.
“I put in at least 100 hours fighting this guy. He may want to run away from this issue, but I’m not going to. His values are out of sync with Canadian society.”
Good for Ezra. But, I wonder what was going on in the background with the HRC; I wonder how much manipulation/payments even..went into getting Soharwardy to back off.
After all, the people who were really in a bind, were the HRC. They HAD to take the case, because they’ve got a record of taking so many CJC and Richard Warman cases. And, they would have HAD to find against Ezra, because otherwise they’d be accused themselves, of ‘discrimination’. heh.
So, it was the HRC who were trapped. The fact that it wasn’t a quiet complaint, but that Ezra made it very public, with his video, and his arguments for free speech – was important. We, the public, got to know about these HRCs and Section 13. We got to read the asinine comments made by previous HRC commissions, eg, that free speech is an ‘American value’ and not a Canadian value.
The blogs got into the picture, and outlined the contradiction between the Charter and the HRCs. And how we have clear defamation laws already..and how no-one has the right not to be offended..
And then, finally, the MSM began to notice and comment.
[Richard Warman went and hid, after being ‘outed’ as a poster of discriminatory comments on blogs.]
So- the HRC was in deep trouble. I wonder what they did to get Soharwardy to withdraw?
Now, there’s Macleans and Mark Steyn. The law students wrote a juvenile and irrelevant article in the Toronto Star recently, changing the issue from their original ‘we are offended’ to a vague and irrelevant ‘human rights’. But the HRC remains on the hook for this case. How will they get out of it?
I do not think this is necessarily a good thing. Like Ezra, I was expecting the HRC to find guilty; Ezra would then take the case to a real court and win. The win would then be used to support the government in making changes. Harper, et.al. may still make the required changes/extinction to the HRC but it would be easier with the decision of a real court.
The left knows how to play these games too. To use a baseball analogy, they decided to walk Ezra rather than letting him hit the ball out of the park with bases loaded.
Good move on Ezra’s part to launch the civil action. Man, do I ever enjoy a good game of chess. 🙂
“Over the two years that we have gone through the process, I understand that most Canadians see this as an issue of freedom of speech, that that principle is sacred and holy in our society,” said Soharwardy, president of the Islamic Supreme Council of Canada.
“I believe Canadian society is mature enough not to absorb the messages that the cartoons sent.”
– Mr. Soharwardy
Is he saying in the interest of free speech he is calling off the HRC? … if so, what does that make the HRC?
Is he saying that he launched an anti-free speech complaint unnecessarily?
I’m not as good as WK at interpreting symbols – what message didn’t I absorb that pleases Soharwardy?
Agree, Brent Weston – it was the HRC behind getting Soharwardy to withdraw his complaint. To save themselves, because they would have had to find him ‘guilty’ and Ezra would have immediately taken it to a real court – and that court would have found it difficult to support the HRCs.
So, they did it to save themselves. Even the wording that Soharwardy used in his withdrawal letter, that’s HRC bureaucratic talk..eg..
“I believe Canadian society is mature enough not to absorb the messages that the cartoons sent. Only a very small fraction of the Canadian media decided to publish the cartoons”.
That’s not Soharwardy talking; he’s repeating what the HRC told him – when they advised him to withdraw the suit.
And it’s an ‘issue of freedom of speech..which is sacred and holy in our society’. Again, that’s not Soharwardy; that’s the HRC.
After all, didn’t he think that Canadian society was mature two years ago when he launched the complaint? Didn’t he know that only a few media published them two years ago?
He’s repeating what the HRC told him, when they wrote him suggesting that he withdraw the complaint.
I wonder what else they used to persuade him.
ET:
I agree with everything you stated but I suppose I am just a little more cynical on this issue than you. While I can certainly believe the the HRC was looking for a “nice” way out of this – and your hypothesis makes sense – I think there were other additional, er, interests involved in the matter.
It reminds me somewhat of the schoolyard bully when a teacher is within sight (no, I mean years ago – not the modern teachers). He would promise to be good or pretend to be not troublesome so that Teacher would not take away the baseball bat.
I think the left was able to see this was going in the correct direction and did not like it. They are prepared to loose both cases involving Ezra and Steyn if that is what it will take so they get to keep the HRCs with Section 13. I think I still smell blood. En core, Ezra.
