Note the actual text of the article is wrong, it talks about the age of consent being lowered in the bill when in fact the bill would raise it, so I’ve corrected it in this excerpt:
“[Manitoba Senator Sharon] Carstairs said she also wants to hear from social workers about what effect [raising] the sexual age of consent [to] 16 [from] 14 would have on young people living on the streets. She said she is concerned that young prostitutes may be driven underground if the age of consent is [raised] and that would leave them more vulnerable to exploitation. It could also keep them away from social workers who could help them escape their plight.”
I can’t even begin to parse that kind of thinking. We shouldn’t raise the age of consent because it will harm 14-and-15-year old PROSTITUTES?!?!? Leave them MORE vulnerable to exploitation?!
Does this woman even have the slightest clue what she’s talking about? It’s not the 14-year-old who gets thrown in jail from a statutory rape/age-of-consent law, it’s the PERVERT THAT TAKES ADVANTAGE OF HER!
I also thought that Carstairs arguments regarding 14 and 15 year old prostitutes were quite bizarre. Wouldn’t raising the age of consent make it less likely that we would even have 14 and 15 year old prostitutes? Her position is disgusting. I got the impression that the Senators are straining for credibility here. They have no credibility and I think that holding up this bill is a clear abuse of power (regardless of their technical right to do so.
