Reader Tips

I’m still battling the effects of the flu, a festering migraine being today’s puke de jour. So until I get this thing beaten, things will be slow around here. You can entertain each other in the comments until then.

  1. Father-Daughter Talk
A young woman was about to finish her first year of University. Like so
many others her age, she considered herself to be a very liberal Federal
liberal, and among other liberal ideals, was very much in favor of
higher taxes to support more government programs, in other words
    redistribution of wealth.
She was deeply ashamed that her father was a rather staunch
Conservative, a feeling she openly expressed. Based on the lectures
that she had participated in, and the occasional chat with a professor,
she felt that her father had for years harbored an evil, selfish desire
to keep what he thought should be his.
One day she was challenging her father on his opposition to higher taxes
on the rich and the need for more government programs. The
self-professed objectivity proclaimed by her professors had to be the
truth and she indicated so to her father. He responded by asking how
    she was doing in school.
Taken aback, she answered rather haughtily that she had a 4.0 GPA, and
let him know that it was tough to maintain, insisting that she was
taking a very difficult course load and was constantly studying, which
left her no time to go out and party like other people she knew. She
didn’t even have time for a boyfriend, and didn’t really have many
college friends because she spent all her time studying.
Her father listened and then asked, “How is your friend Audrey doing?”
She replied, “Audrey is barely getting by. All she takes are easy
classes, she never studies, and she barely has a 2.0 GPA. She is so
popular on campus; University for her is a blast. She’s always invited
to all the parties, and lots of times she doesn’t even show up for
classes because she’s too hung over.”
Her wise father asked his daughter, “Why don’t you go to the Dean’s
office and ask him to deduct a 1.0 off your GPA and give it to your
friend who only has a 2.0. That way you will both have a 3.0 GPA and
certainly that would be a fair and equal distribution of GPA.”
The daughter, visibly shocked by her father’s suggestion, angrily fired
back, “That’s a crazy idea. How would that be fair? I’ve worked really
hard for my grades! I’ve invested a lot of time, and a lot of hard
work! Audrey has done next to nothing toward her degree. She played
while I worked my tail off!”
The father slowly smiled, winked and said gently, “Welcome to the
    Conservative Party.”

  4. Re: Chief Joseph has tough questions.
Why do the supposed educated native leaders have to throw the racism card out everytime? Is it a Coincidence that the 2 knive wielding people shot by Saskatoon Police were native. I don’t know but the stats would show that violent crimes happen to more likely committed by natives than other groups in Saskatchewan.
Perhaps Joseph finds it easier to blame the White Man for his failings as a leader rather than present a suitable solution to the native problem.
A simple solution would be that if you are a native collecting welfare then you should be living on a reservation. If you are gainfully employed live where you want. But if you are living off of taxpayers hard work you should be on the reserve. At least there the reserves could be dry.

For those of us who actually -make- things, this is a cautionary tale of an exploding belt grinder.
One may well ask what could possibly make a belt grinder explode. I’ll leave it as a puzzle for the engineers and brainiacs among us. The hints are 1) angle iron 2) pop rivets. Or you can read the blog and find out the easy way.
    Have fun!

  6. All the best, Kate and a happy & prosperous 2008. Your blog is number one on my list and the first I turn to when I open my computer in the morning, and several times during the day. You have really interesting topics and fascinating comments from bloggers.
Cal2: A great submission, I really enjoyed it. A dose of reality can shatter unrealistic ambitions in a hurry.

  7. Mark Steyn On Multiculturalism:
The Multiculturalist says, “I think you’re being a bit hierarchical when you say most Muslim countries aren’t free.”
Mark Steyn replies, “Well, these are facts. If you take, for example, countries where just 20% of the population is Muslim, only three of them qualify as free; Serbia and Montenegro, benin and Suri Nam. And, it will be interesting to see if France will qualify as a fourth member of that group. And, then you start reeling off objective statistics about literacy, about GDP, about Women’s Rights, about votes and Democracy … These are facts, what we used to call, before the Multicultural Age, facts.
So, you reel off five facts, and the guy goes, “Oh yeah? Well, that’s just your opinion.”
    ibloga.blogspot.com
Isn’t that the problem that rational folks are dealing with? On the left, feelings trump facts. Drive-by smears and ad hominem attacks trump all.
Therefore, ‘leftard’ is an appropriate definition for the seriously retarded intellects grouped on the left.

  8. That’s ok Irwin. If you want to beat a Leftard, ask them what can make a belt grinder explode.
When they have to ask you “what’s a belt grinder?” ask them how the hell they can have an opinion on anything of import if they don’t even know what a belt grinder is. ~:D

“Talking about the reasons for the dry conditions, Phillips said it’s not likely global warming was the cause.
“Precipitation particularly is a tough call,” he said. “Sometimes it comes down to bad luck. I wouldn’t say it was climate change. We had fewer weather systems, fewer tornadoes move through the area.”
In the case of the belt along the north shore of Lake Erie, Phillips said the weather systems, and accompanying rain missed the area.” …-

Chinese sports host humiliated by wife on TV
The Olympic Games’ ability to attract controversy is enjoying a new twist after China’s equivalent of Des Lynam was humiliated at a television ceremony by his wife storming onstage and accusing him of conducting an affair.
CCTV 5, China’s main sports channel, was being relaunched as the Olympics Channel to honour the 2008 Beijing Games at a grand press launch at the weekend.
Zhang Bin, its sports news director and premier anchorman, was conducting the honours.
But as he addressed the studio audience and the cameras, a figure wearing a brown duffel coat was seen climbing onstage in the wings.
It did not take long for onlookers to recognise her: Zhang’s wife, Hu Ziwei, is also a well-known sports anchor, on the regional Beijing TV station. advertisement
She approached the podium, took the microphone and announced to the surprised crowd that two hours before she had discovered Zhang had been having “an improper relationship with another woman”.
As Zhang dithered, clearly uncertain as to whether to intervene or not, she began a simple appeal to the country’s sense of honour. […]
Opinion was divided. While many enjoyed the humiliation doled out to the CCTV anchor – a breed held in much contempt by internet users – others pointed out that Mrs Hu should not have been surprised at her treatment.
After all, Zhang was already married to his first wife when he met her. …-

    Mary Tee,
Down here 16% of Democrats & 17% of Republicans consider GW important. I would guess that 2008 is going to be a very bad year for the gangsters & Science pretenders. I didn’t know that a “Climate Scientist” was actually a Social Engineer guiding public policy.

  17. NORTH AMERICAN “CONSERVATIVE INCREMENTALISM” :
    http://tinyurl.com/36epol
“”We have to be willing to make progress in small, practical steps,” Mr. Flanagan wrote in Harper’s Team, a memoir of the five years he spent in the Prime Minister’s inner circle. “Sweeping visions have a place in intellectual discussion, but they are toxic in practical politics.”

Hmmmm see a pattern forming with all these global socialist agenda propagandists…always the employment of pop culture pimping…always aimed at the susceptible minds of children.
The coalition of NATO nations was a reactivation of the concept of nation-state sovereignty orver the boarderless global soviet of the UN…naturally the globalists have to get the next generation thinking of themselves as a global citzen rather than as an American, Canadian, Brit, Russian or whatever….open display of indoctrinating young minds with globalist mythology.

  23. RAND Corporation has a prepared a series of monographs on Central Asia. The first to be published, Central Asia and Its Asian Neighbors: Security and Commerce at the Crossroads, considers “interests in and ties with Central Asia on the part of China, Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and India.” Forthcoming documents will “address political structures and participation; religion, ethnicity, and clans; and economic development. In addition, a broad overview monograph, U.S. Interests in Central Asia: Policy Priorities and Military Roles, draws on the material in all of these assessments to define future requirements and approaches to the region.”

I think the question should be: why are First Nations people so often involved in violent acts? Please, Lawrence Joseph, stop blaming others, do the work that needs to be done to really help your people.
In marked contrast to the shooting in Calgary (I believe it was Calgary.) The family blamed no one, fully recognizing it was a bad situation.

  25. Phantom, I know what a belt sander is: One of those things we used to race in shop class back in high school. Until we got caught that is. Then we got a lesson on clean up but it was much less explosive than your Oz bloke.
To Kate and the gang of “usual suspects”, have a happy and safe New Year.

  26. Along the same broad theme in Cal2’s story:
A dedicated Teamster’s Union worker was attending a convention in Las Vegas and decided to check out the local brothels.
When he got to the first one, he asked the Madam, “Is this a Union house?”
“No, She replied, I’m sorry it isn’t”.
“Well, if I pay you $100, what cut do the girls get?”
“The House gets $80 and the girls get $20.” she answered.
Offended at such unfair dealings, the union man stomped off down the street in search of a more equitable, hopefully unionized shop. His search continued until finally he reached a brothel where the Madam responded, “why yes sir, this is a union house.”
    “We observe all union rules.”
The union man asked, “And if I pay you $100, what cut do the girls get?”
“The girls get $80 and the house gets $20.”
“That’s more like it!” the union man said.
He handed the Madam $100, looked around the room, and pointed to a stunningly attractive blonde.
    “I’d like here,” he said.
“I’m sure you would, sir, said the Madam. Then she gestured to a 92 – year old woman in the corner, ” but Ethel here has 67 years seniority and according to union rules, she’s next.”

  27. Our Boys blitz Taliban bash
BRITISH commandos launched a devastating blitz on the Taliban – as the evil terrorists held a party to celebrate Benazir Bhutto’s murder.
The dawn raid was staged after messages were intercepted about the sick knees-up in Afghanistan’s Helmand province.
Royal Marines crept into position as the fanatics partied the night away just hours after Ms Bhutto was killed in Pakistan.
The bash was being held in ruined compounds a few hundred yards from Our Boys’ remote base in Kajaki.
Ragtag Taliban sentries tried to hit back with machine gun fire – but stood no chance against the heroes of 40 Commando’s Charlie Company. […]

  28. The 7-11 where I buy my newspapers informed me today that the National Post retail price is going up on January 2nd. My reponse to this is I will no longer buy the Post on Mondays and Tuesdays. This price increase is just another example of a newspaper tightening the noose around its own neck. They are getting fewer and fewer people willing to pay more for an increasingly inferior product.

  29. HAPPY “X”YEAR!
Don’t want to offend any minorities that don’t celebrate the same start date, or A.D. 2008 year. This sign of inclusiveness, perhaps even inferiority, should also make the multicultist leftards giddy with the results of their superior ‘progressive’ ideology.

  30. I’m sorry to hear you’re down. I hope you kick it soon. Anyone family members you were with for X mas dinner catch it?

  31. Different Bob – You can always get newspapers cheap if you want. I have subscribed to the National post for years at the student rate because I happened to be taking a night school course at the time. It costs me about 10 bucks a month for home delivery. Newspapers are way more concerned about their paid circulation than they are about the cost of a single issue. Call them, complain, and I bet they give you a better deal.

  32. Happy Hogmanay and Happy New Year to all.
Caroline Glick, Our World: It’s not personal, it’s war
And this is a shame because the issue of elections in Pakistan is irrelevant when seen in the context of the current state that country – and it was irrelevant before Bhutto was murdered. Indeed, since she returned to Pakistan from exile in October, Bhutto herself served merely as a distraction. She focused international attention on her democratic rhetoric and away from the dangers that she was completely incompetent to handle – whether elected or not.
The Pakistan which Bhutto insisted she could save is a pro-jihadist nuclear-armed state. The Pakistani public, military and intelligence services stand in sympathy with al-Qaida and the Taliban. With the support of the public and the collusion of sectors of the military and intelligence services whose ranks they have seamlessly infiltrated, the Taliban and al-Qaida daily extend their control over more and more of the country.
US officials claim that Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal is secure and under the full control of the military. Yet given the Pakistani military’s sympathy for al-Qaida and the Taliban, it is irresponsible not to consider the possibility that at least some of the forces charged with securing Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal have operational links to the jihadists.

  33. a different bob.. thanx for the best laugh i’ve had all week. we should send it to the buzzsaw or buzzard if you prefer.
kate… thanx for a year of very entertaining and informative articles. hope you get well soon. have a happy and prosperous new year.

  34. “The next the time the world needs saving they should call Greenpeace.”
    No way out
The Telegraph reports that although Benazir Bhutto wanted to hire foreign bodyguards, she wasn’t allowed to. Who exactly did she want to hire?
Ms Bhutto’s entourage discussed deals with the American Blackwater operation, this newspaper has learnt. … A Blackwater spokesman confirmed the negotiations. “We were approached to provide prime minister Bhutto’s security, but an agreement was unfortunately never reached,” she said. She declined to go into the precise details.
    […]
The aftermath of the Bhutto assassination demonstrates why public criticism is the unavoidable consequence of being perceived as “responsible” for the world. The implied criticism in the article above is that “the Bush administration didn’t pressure Musharraf” to let Bhutto hire Blackwater. But isn’t Blackwater the diabolical “mercenary” company that is the root of all evil in the world? But if Blackwater had been hired to protect Bhutto and shot the gunman before he could kill Bhutto, there would still be no out. The headlines would probably read “mercenary company indiscriminately fires at Pakistani crowd just as in Iraq.” And if he missed the headlines would read “incompetent American bodyguard fails to spot assassin. Was Cheney involved in plot to kill Bhutto?”
The next the time the world needs saving they should call Greenpeace. …-
