“The much-publicised launch of Sunny Hundal’s Liberal Conspiracy blog has already produced a fine moment of inadvertent comedy, and possibly a revealing one. In a post titled We Need Our Own Space, Guardian contributor Zohra Moosa bemoans the troublesome obligation to substantiate one’s politics with, you know, evidence and argument.”

“The Malaysian carmaker Proton has announced plans to develop an “Islamic car”, designed for Muslim motorists.
Proton is planning on teaming up with manufacturers in Iran and Turkey to create the unique vehicle. The car could boast special features like a compass pointing to Mecca and a dedicated space to keep a copy of the Koran and a headscarf.
The idea came during a visit to the Middle East by a delegation of Malaysian politicians and businessmen.”
The rift in the party is beginning to get wider, and we’re not talking the Liberal Party either.

On the Matter of Henrys per Ohm & a New Reader’s Tip
In response to a comment I made in a previous thread some hundreds of thousands of henrys per ohm ago, Jared wrote that “My guess is that [henrys per ohm is] a clumsy attempt to communicate the idea of ‘inertia’ in a manner only comprehensible to another electrical engineer”. Well de gustibus non est disputandum and all that, yet I rather thought that the analogical inertia model was rather clever, especially considering that over half the respondents to the SDA “what’s your profession” survey were of the physical sciences and engineering sort.
One henry is one kg m² per A² s². One ohm is one kg m² per A² s³. Therefore, one henry per ohm is one second. Indeed, as henrys measure inductance, and ohms impedance, henrys per ohm is the time constant of a circuit containing inductance and impedance, which measures the time it takes the circuit to respond when subject to change in its input.
Now, given that inductance measures the magnetic flux induced in a circuit when current flows, resulting in electromotive force, and that impedance measures resistance to the flow of such current, the analogy is that when when one has greater statist current flowing one has greater induced state-o-motive force, and thus socio-politics changes slower, and when one has greater social resistance to statist force, socio-politics changes faster.
Or as Sir Wilfrid Laurier noted, “Experience has established that institutions, which at the outset were useful, often end by becoming intolerable abuses owing to the simple fact that everything around them has changed […] and they have not”. More recently, M. Sarkozy said, “Europe cannot enlarge for ever. We must hold up enlargement at least until institutions have been modernised”.
Consider, for example, socialist programs like welfare and affirmative action. While they may on occasion be useful tools for working on certain classes of short-term problems, either they fail, in which case they should be cancelled, or they succeed, in which case the problem is solved, and they should be cancelled. Capitalism, on the other hand, need not change in that sense, since the fundamental human behaviour it models has not changed, though oligarchies and plutocracies remain a problem.
It is that rate of change that I referred to when mentioning the time it takes to, metaphorically, steer a changed course for the ship of state. Obscure, yes; clumsy, no. At least, in my opinion, it’s more interesting than two content-free commenters casting cheap aspersions at each other 😉

Sunni, Shia Sheiks Present United Front Against al-Qaeda
Multi-National Force – Iraq ^ | Maj. Jason Waggoner
CAMP STRIKER — A short-notice reconciliation meeting of regional sheiks with potential for impact throughout Iraq was held Nov. 8 in Al Bassam, an area approximately 16 kilometers west of Baghdad city center. The conference was called by a highly influential leader, Abu Maruf, with less than 24-hours notice, to make a public declaration of unity amongst the tribes against al-Qaeda and to map the way ahead for their region.
“We were notified of the meeting at about 8 p.m. the night before,” said Lt. Col. Brian Coppersmith, commander of War Rakkasans, 1st Squadron, 33rd Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault). “We weren’t sure why the conference was being called on such short notice. We have learned that things move fast when they are this good.”
Coppersmith was invited by Abu Maruf to observe the event. …-

And I thought Islam had the moral high ground over the decadent west. Was I mistaken:
Most Arabic Yahoo groups are about sex
Author: Esra’a (Bahrain) – November 9, 2007
I’m not sure how reliable this is, so I looked a bit further. About a year go, it appears that Cairo was the #1 city that searched for “sex” on Google. Sabbah provides a few graphs detailing who’s searching for sex on the internet. Here is who searched for sex by region:
Arabic is the 2nd most common language that is used to search for “gay sex.” It’s the number one language for search involving “sexy.” As you can see in that same graph, Iran is at 3 and Egypt is at 4, listed under regions where search on “sexy” was most conducted.
Arabic is the 2nd most common language that is used to search for “gay man.” The countries that most search for this is currently Malaysia (#1) and Indonesia (#2). For “gay girl,” Arabic is also the 2nd most common language.
For “child porn,” Turkey is the 2nd country where this is most searched. Turkish is the #1 language used.
Turkey has one of the most searches for the word “porno.” Morocco is at 5. Turkish is #1 language used to conduct the search in. Indonesia is currently #1 country that search for the word “vagina.”
Turkey is not an Arab country, nor are some of the other countries I listed. But they are Muslim, so I thought the findings were fascinating to say the least. All of this information is not in the least bit shocking, but it’s quite ironic.
What do you guys think?
Update:
Egypt is currently #1 for “fat sex.”
Pakistan, Morocco, Turkey and Egypt are at the top of the list when it comes to “animal sex.”
For “children sex,” Pakistan is at #1, Egypt #2 and Iran #3. The most common languages used to conduct the search in are Arabic and Turkish.
For “sexy child,” Pakistan is #1, followed by Iran, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Turkey. Common languages are Persian, Arabic, and Turkish.
For “homo sex,” Indonesia is #1, Morocco is at 6.
For “rape,” Pakistan is at 1. Malaysia is at 3.
For “bird sex,” Egypt is at 1. (Come ON!)
Why would PMO not have read a 7 month old Karl Heinz letter?

The Cult of Non-Judgmentalism
In Praise of Prejudice: The Necessity of Preconceived Ideas
By Theodore Dalrymple
Theodore Dalrymple challenges the modern concept of “prejudice against prejudice” in his beautifully written new book, In Praise of Prejudice: The Necessity of Preconceived Ideas, with his usual wry and concise style. As in his previous books, Dalrymple puts his finger on an essential defect in modern popular thought that has left us seriously lacking in our ability to deal with reality as it is. Though he doesn’t address it directly, the modern myth of human equality lies at the bottom of the attitude he criticizes. […]
As Richard Weaver wrote in “Life Without Prejudice:”
“It is possible in some abstract sense that all men are equal. But according to the Bible, Aristotle, and most considerate observers, men are not equal in natural capacity, aptitude for learning, moral education, and so on. If you can get the first belief substituted for the second, on the claim that the second cannot be proved, you have removed a ‘prejudice.’ And along with it, you have removed such perception as you have of reality.” (Modern Age, 1957)…-

Vitruvius: “On the Matter of Henrys per Ohm & a New Reader’s Tip”
I quite appreciated your inductor analogy right off the bat, as the electrical engineering nerd that I am! (We’ve actually used multi-dimensional inductors and capacitors in our research toward analog and digital image processing systems.)
Anyway, I must say I greatly enjoyed everything about Prof. Carter’s presentation — style, content, enthusiasm, and humour. I watched it twice to see if I could somehow emulate his masterful delivery!
Kate, perhaps you can consider posting Vitruvius’ youtube links? I believe all (ahem — almost all) of your readers would enjoy this.
Cheers,
Norm
Why thank you, Norm, though I do admit I just wanted to say state-o-motive force 😉
Kate, if you are interested in promoting Prof. Carter’s videos, he is, for the record, Robert M. Carter, research professor at the Marine Geophysical Laboratory at James Cook University in Australia.
This is a great post about the anti-war movies that Hollywood’s churning out these days:
http://www.outsidethewire.com/blog/media/end-of-the-war-hero.html
“In the latest round of war movies the heroes are not the Soldiers and Marines who every day fight and defeat a vicious and barbaric enemy–the heroes are reporters, lawyers and activists.
And since every story requires a villain, the real enemy–Mohammedan Jihadists–are replaced by neo-cons, politicians, Soldiers and Marines. . . .
Being a hero is not a job for everyone, many accept this and give credit to those who are willing to take the challenge.
But there is another group for who the sting of their own cowardice is too much to bear. They are not willing to accept that they cannot be heroes.
They cannot accept that, even if they were younger or had the physical ability to confront a violent villain, they would shrink from the challenge.
To alleviate their guilt they invent a new villain–Halliburton, Cheney, neo-cons, politicians, military officers, Soldiers, Marines–in short, anyone who will not physically harm them.
This substituted version of the traditional hero myth allows anyone to be a hero, but it does not fulfill the craving for a true hero–especially when so many know the true enemy.
The anti-war films are failing . . .”
