  2. (1) Israeli research could lead to new class of antibiotics
The discovery by a team of Israeli researchers of a new communication factor that enables bacteria to ‘talk to each other’ and causes their death could have significant consequences leading to development of a new class of antibiotic medications.
Bacteria are traditionally considered unicellular organisms. However, increasing experimental evidence indicates that bacteria seldom behave as isolated organisms. Instead, they are members of a community in which the isolated organisms communicate among themselves, thereby manifesting some multi-cellular behaviors.
…The communication factor formed by Escherichia coli enables the activation of a built-in “suicide module” which is located on the bacterial chromosome and is responsible for bacterial cell death under stressful conditions. Therefore, the new factor has been designated EDF (Extra-cellular Death Factor).
While suicidal cell death is counterproductive for the individual bacterial cell, it becomes effective for the bacterial community as a whole by the simultaneous action of a group of cells that are signaled by EDF. Under stressful conditions in which the EDF is activated, a major sub-population within the bacterial culture dies, allowing the survival of the population as a whole.
Understanding how the EDF functions may provide a lead for a new and more efficient class of antibiotics that specifically trigger bacterial cell death in the intestine bacteria Escherichia coli and probably in many other bacteria, including those pathogens that also carry the “suicide module.”

Key tribal leader on verge of deserting Taliban
    By Tom Coghlan in Kabul
An Afghan tribal leader is in talks to defect from the Taliban and take thousands of armed tribesmen with him to fight alongside British forces in southern Afghanistan.
The Daily Telegraph has learned that the Afghan government hopes to seal the deal this week with Mullah Abdul Salaam and his Alizai tribe, which has been fighting alongside the Taliban in Helmand province.
Diplomats confirmed yesterday that Mullah Salaam was expected to change sides within days. He is a former Taliban corps commander and governor of Herat province under the government that fell in 2001.
Military sources said British forces in the province are “observing with interest” the potential deal in north Helmand, which echoes the efforts of US commanders in Iraq’s western province to split Sunni tribal leaders from their al-Qa’eda allies.

  5. Kate, can you train the dog so that once it arrives in Brazil, it will take a short pilgramage north-west, vist a small little man named Chavez, and conduct a little tooth to groin exercise?

  6. “An Afghan tribal leader is in talks to defect from the Taliban and take thousands of armed tribesmen with him to fight alongside British forces in southern Afghanistan.”
These are not the Taliban, they are local tribesmen who will go back and forth based on what is in their best interest. Since the Taliban is getting their asses shot off by Canadians and Americans, it makes sense to defect. You don’t get that Ted??
The Taliban are from outside Afghanistan. They are a repressive invading force of insane Islamic fools.
The real action now is in Pakistan since Bhutto has returned. She is the target of the Taliban and the other creepy forces of evil. Don’t you get that Ted?
You cannot defeat a “determined” enemy unless you are also “determined” and have better weapons. This war in Afstan and Iraq have been taking far too long in part because even though some of us are ‘determined’ YOUR half our side has not been. Thankfully our better weaponry has been leveling out the field. And thankfully we are slowly becoming more determined to win.
The defection of the Sunni’s in Iraq and the Tribal people in Afstan are signs that we are winning, not because we are gas bags, but because we are shooting their asses off everyday and it’s starting wear them down. Don’t you get that TED ?

  7. FIREARMS LAW CHARTER CHALLENGE, A BRAVE BATTLE FOR FREEDOM:
    http://tinyurl.com/32jnh9
“”For the past several days, I’ve been reading up on the Bruce Montague case, a Constitutional challenge of Canada’s Firearms Act, and from what I can see, a brave stand against the most corrupt and hypocritical forces in government.
    (…)
I am also concerned about the absurd and unprecedented amount of power given to police officers by the Firearms Act, as well as the Act’s apparent infringement on numerous Charter rights (see http://www.brucemontague.ca/html/0080.html for a full explanation).
Most police officers are, in my opinion, far more corrupt and arrogant than the average citizen who seeks only to guard his home and mind his own business. And yet, we trust our police with a whole array of dangerous weapons, which they all-too-often abuse. Add that to the reality that disturbed criminals will always be able get their hands on guns and other weapons one way or another. Why should law-abiding homeowners be left helpless in the crossfire?
    (…)
Yes, I realize that judges are cautious about striking down legislation (as they should be), but I really can’t understand how this particular law is compatible with our Charter, Bill of Rights, British common law, or any of the principles that freedom-loving Canadians hold dear. If judges are able to make bizarre and, quite frankly, laughable changes to the definition of “civil marriage” (and may well continue to do so in the future), then surely they can strike down a law that sees citizens jailed for trying to ensure their own safety, within their own homes.””

  8. “The Taliban are from outside Afghanistan. They are a repressive invading force of insane Islamic fools.”
Aside from the comment of them being “insane Islamic fools”, this comment shows you have no idea what you are talking about John.
The Taliban is homegrown Sunni Muslim movement in Afghanistan that ruled the country (or at least most of it) for years from 1996. The Taliban includes those fighting for it and so talking with the “enemy”, as the British and US forces have been as one part of their arsenal in bringing peace to Afghanistan (the other two major parts being incredible development efforts and incredible military strength). Chipping away the supporters of the Taliban however you can, piece by piece if necessary, is part of the solution, not just blowing everybody up. That didn’t quite work out for the Ruskies or the Brits before them, but obviously not being a student of history you are probably unaware of that.
I’ve been a big backer of the Afghanistan mission from the beginning and a big backer of establishing as permanent a successful and peaceful regime as possible. Why aren’t you, John?

Ted – Would it ever occur to you that such discussions are only possible once the motivation and hope of the murdering SOB’s like the Taliban has been destroyed?
That the success of the force applied to their sources of sustenance and their imminent destruction is what makes it desirable for them to talk and seek peace (for now) instead of murder?
That it remains necessary to keep a forceful presence to ensure that they will not return to their old ways?
That what your idols propose has nothing to do with holding talks from a position of power but rather a desire to suck up to pacifist fools in our society through blind submission to the desires of criminal miscreants who wish our society to be utterly destroyed?
It’s ALL about motivation Ted – there’s is now survival rather than Ideology.
That means WE WIN …. it’s called a fight Ted and in a fight you don’t stop to talk until you’ve beaten the will to fight out of your opponent! Then you can talk!
Good God You leftards are weak and stupid!

  10. Looks like you are gradually moving to my way of thinking Ted. If you have a big enough stick, your enemies will eventually squeal and then you can start cutting the deals and that is the point we are at now.
If we have used bigger stick at the outset (especially in Iraq where they had too few boots) the Squealing would have started sooner.
The reason they never relented to the Russians is because the Russians weren’t offering anything but more repression and they were not the brightest lights in the super power arena anyway..

  11. Would it ever occur to you that such discussions are only possible once the motivation and hope of the murdering SOB’s like the Taliban has been destroyed?

That it remains necessary to keep a forceful presence to ensure that they will not return to their old ways?
I agree completely OMMAG and said nothing to the contrary. I’m no fan of Jack! Layton, think he’s pretty ridiculous actually, but many have questioned his patriotism – even called him a traitor – for suggesting we enter any kind of discussions with the Taliban. That’s just naive thinking. Even in World War II, when the Allies had concluded that they would accept only unconditional surrender (and,as a historical aside, fighting off those at home who advocated the severest retribution against the Germans, including no-trial executions for all senior political and military personnel), there were discussions ongoing.
Bargain from a position of strength, absolutely, and don’t put down your guns until everything is settled (and even then don’t put them down). And recognize that there will be some on the frontier who will always opt for ongoing guerilla war, but there will never be any peace of any kind unless discussions and negotiations take place with whomever will have them.
Like I said, 3 weapons: first, military might; second, development where possible; third, discussions where workable.

  12. “An Afghan tribal leader is in talks to defect from the Taliban and take thousands of armed tribesmen with him TO FIGHT alongside British forces ….
… Diplomats confirmed yesterday that Mullah Salaam was expected to change sides within days.”
Jack! Layton wanted peace talks with all sides. I don’t see how one mullah’s decision (or many) to change sides to fight with the good guys instead of the fanatics proves that Jack was right. In fact, it proves the opposite: the talks have increased the likelihood that in future we’ll be killing more Taliban, and that there may be more defections.

A man who faces more than a dozen criminal charges in connection with a high-speed chase through Halifax and Dartmouth plans to launch a formal complaint against police.

DeYoung called CBC News on Tuesday from the Nova Scotia Correctional Facility, saying he is in constant pain after being shot in leg before the police chase.
“Every other time that I’ve been chased, it’s never been like that. I can see if I got shot because they had to stop me because I was too erratic, but I didn’t even begin being erratic and was already shot,” he said.

They aren’t a government, Ted. Even if their word was worth a pile of camel crap, there’s nothing to make a deal with. They -can’t- make deals because they have no control over their “soldiers”. They don’t even know who their soldiers are or where they are from one day to the next. Its a cell-based terror network, that’s how it works.
One would think that would be perfectly obvious. Come on Ted! You can do better!

  18. I would not trust the Taleban as far as i could be within grenade tossing range of them..
Ask the British how the last ‘peace talks’ went..
One only goes to the negotiating table when the enemy is on the verge of collapse..the only way to ensure that is to destroy as much infrastructure and kill as many of the enemy as you possibly can.
One only has to look at the Vietnam war, where operation linebacker forced the north Vietnamese to the table in a matter of weeks, whereas years of expensive relatively low level effort on the ground produced nothing constructive..the NVA was pounded into submission by around the clock high intensity strategic and area carpet bombing by waves of B-52 bombers carrying 500 and 1000lb blockbuster bombs.
When your brain is being turned to Jelly from the concussive force of continuous detonation, you run to the table..
As an aside, anyone claiming to be a serious student of history and using the examples of an imperial English army or a communist era russian one as being unable to tame the Afghans is being disingenuous in their arguements..
The Canadian battle group can bring more firepower to bear than a thousand British squares combined, with accuracy and lethality never dreamed of 125+ years ago..we have taken areas in a matter of days that the British never took in years of protracted conflict..
The soviet army of the 70’s while large, was an ineffective conscript army.Badly trained, poorly equipped and tragically led, it is no surprise that the Russians had their collective asses handed to them and lost anywhere between 12 and 20 thousand men in the process..
That Canada has done so much with so little, and in the process has lost only a relatively small amount of men, is a credit to them, and a furthur indication just how unwilling the left is to stand up for their stated ideals. If that is what it takes to lose your will to fight….
Do it now, or do it later..they will still be there if we leave, and one day they we will be on our doorstep..

“A team of scientists, whose work was published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, has found that a specific strain of the HIV virus passed from Haiti to the United States in about 1969 before spreading further.
The strain, called subtype B, predominates in the United States, Europe, large parts of South America, Australia and Japan.
The team traced the virus by examining archived blood samples from five early AIDS patients – all of them Haitian immigrants to the United States – and analyzed genetic sequences from another group of patients from around the world.
Using the data, they developed a map of the virus, which they believe shows conclusively that the strain came to the United States via Haiti, probably by a single person, in around 1969.
Michael Worobey of the University of Arizona in Tucson is one of the study’s authors. He says once in the United States, it appears the HIV virus circulated undetected for about a dozen years among members of the Haitian community before the first transmission in 1969 in the caucasian community.” …-

I put this up earlier. Thanks for making it a hyperlink.
Is there an easy way to do this? I’ve tried before but it seems I can’t get it right.

  30. Ted @ 12:00 PM
A slight correction on your statement concerning the origins and makeup of the Taliban. They are not a home grown Sunni Muslim movement as you state – most of them are imports (but of course not all) – radical muslims, mainly Arabic and Pakistani, but generally from around the world, who came in to fight the USSR invaders of Afghanistan back in the days when there was a USSR. Bad bunch of dudes. Their presence in and control of the country thus very much predates the 1996 date you offer.
I lived in Eastern Iran in the early ’90s, not very far from the Afghan border, and saw the results of the Taliban presence in Afghanistan in the refugees living (trying to eke out a living) in Iran. The Irainian government (news releases from them are suspect of course) said there were about 2 million Afghani refugees in their country at the time.
From others who are more familiar with their history (and that of Al Qaeda) than am I, I understand that bin Laden arrived there in 1980, and provided funding and training.

  31. I can see why Dion is having Libs abstain from mini-budget vote, though I do think he is making a serious error. It’s not what most of you think, though. By abstaining, and with NDP and Bloc voting against government, Dion’s Liberals are being outflanked on the left (you know, wherefrom Jack Layton claims to know “what Canadians want”), and the right, with Tories getting through measure thought impossible with CPC minority. Just where does that leave the Liberals? Out in the cold, IMHO.
OTOH, what else can he do. His disingenuous “we’ll decide when to put this government down (translation: if we thought we had a snowball’s chance in h**l of winning now, we would force election immediately, but we know we can’t win, so we’ll wait).
It must suck to be a Liberal right now. Why don’t they bite the bullet and get rid of Dion through inevitable electoral loss. They shouldn’t have talked him out of forcing election.

  32. Neil, the Taliban you refer to only represent 20% of the Afghan population. Many people assume Pasthtun and Taliban and interchangeable. They are not; the Taliban are a subset of Pashtun. There are more Taliban in Pakistan than Afghanistan.
BTW, it is incorrect to argue Afghan developments prior to 9/11 internal affair. The Taliban seized power, with assistance of Pakistan Secret Police, Saudi Arabia and China. Outsiders have been meddling in Afghanistan ad infinitum.
We are there because this failed state facilitated international terrorist attacks. I laugh when some argue this is about 9/11, therefore not about Canada. Google AQ attacks worldwide. If Canada is/should be uninvolved, even as NATO member, then should Spain, Britain, Indonesia, virtually every ME state, and Russia be involved?
Ted, I know you support action in Afghanistan, but WRT negotiations, all wars end in negotiation, so your point seems fuzzy to me. Personally, I would rather negotiate with a defeated enemy than an emboldened one. Having said that, I don’t believe negotiation with Taliban will bear any fruit. They negotiate with indidels when they are being routed and need time to reorganize and rearm. Hezbollah and Hamas are examples of this tactic.

  33. Alistair,
    I use this:
    A HREF=”http://www.whatever.com”>your title goes here A
Except what you need to do is surround the first A with the less than and greater than symbols, and around the last A the same thing, except with a slash /, in front of the A. (the slash closes it out)
(This is HTML code, and it won’t let me post the proper code without looking funky, thus this long drawn out explanation)
    Hope that makes sense.

  34. I’d be interested to know what it cost to transport the dog. My inlaws are considering leaving behind their pet dog in Laos, where they have lived for two years, when they return to Canada, because the cost of transportation is so outrageous. I can’t imagine doing that myself – I mean, he is a member of the family in my opinion!! Perhaps if I could point them towards a less expensive option, that could affect their decision. Any ideas?

  35. I messed up! Just a less than symbol in front of the first A.
Surround the second A with both.
This does a pretty good job of explaining it.
Obviously you just replace that whatever.com with your link in it’s place within the quotes, and replace “your title goes here”, with whatever you want your hyperlink to say. In this case, I just wrote “this”.

  36. Shamrock@4:45PM
I don’t disagree that the Taliban are a minority in Afghanistan, nor that they are a subset of the Pashtun, nor did I state these things. Your comments on this (who they are) are true. I agree that there could be more Taliban in Pakistan than there are in Afghanistan and no doubt there are some in Iran.
One of the errors that is made in describing the terrorists in Afghanistan is that they are “Taliban” but for clarity of understanding I use that term to describe them, as most people understand the terrorists to be Taliban without understanding who the Taliban are, although I don’t believe that they are in the majority of the terrorists. I believe that the majority of the terrorists are foreigners.
I don’t really understand your statement that “BTW, it is incorrect to argue Afghan developments prior to 9/11 internal affair”. However, history is a continuum, and the Taliban, or terrorists, did not come to power over night. My point to Ted was that the terrorists were/are made of up of some locals (Taliban) aided and abetted by external/foreign radical muslim forces recruited, trained and active well prior to the date of 1996 stated by Ted.

  37. antoher quote from CBCpravda , where tax cuts are called costs.
Many economists have argued that broader, deeper income tax cut would be better for the economy than a GST cut, which costs $5.5 billion a year. The GST was cut from seven per cent to six per cent in mid-2006. The Harper government has long promised to further reduce the tax to five per cent.
