Frustrated while awaiting surgery on his damaged knee, Saskatchewan Roughriders receiver Matt Dominguez told a national TSN telecast about his unhappiness and inadvertently waded into a debate about universal health care. All this in a province approaching an election, in the birthplace of medicare, where surgical waiting times are always a hot-button topic.
“I went from being on the best team in the league, leading the league in receiving, to being on a list for surgery,” Dominguez said Monday after calling the Leader-Post to clarify his on-air comments.
“I’ve lived here for three years and I’m involved in the community, but not a week goes by that I don’t hear somebody complain about the health care system. Because I’m an American, I can’t talk about the health care system? You never hear people saying that the waiting lists are awesome. I never said I’m better than anyone or that I should be put ahead of anybody else. I’m not. I’m just saying that if I have to wait eight months (for surgery), that’s too long.”
There’s a reason that the Saskatchewan Roughriders have never won a Grey Cup with the NDP in office.

Privatizing healthcare delivery solves all of our commie-care problems.
I hear people on the radio complaining about nurse and doctor shortages. This is because most doctors would like to work for themselves( just like the rest of us).
By limiting the employment opprotunities across Canada, we have limited the flow of doctors into our Country.
By eliminating competition in commie-care we have eliminated the consumer pressure that would force doctors to perform thier tasks effectivly and efficiently.
By eliminating competition, we have limited the number of nurses who would work in Canada due to lack of employment choices. Many factors go into a persons decision when choosing where they will work. These factors may include not wanting to be part of a union, or not wanting to work for a particular employer( a chioce nurses don’t have in Canada).
Ask yourselves this:
If Canada created a National Engineering plan, and made private engineering companies illegal. Would engineers come to Canada or would they be leaving Canada?
I am still in awe how fast the leftoids come out like flies to shit trying to defend the tommy system of culling the herd. That poor gospel singer might be a bit poorer, although he should get partial compensation from Health Canada, but he is still alive and I kind of think that would be important to me.
BTW, that is also why they have travel insurance. If you don’t care enough to take care of yourself then why should anyone else?

I never understood why people think health care is free. In Ontario 46% of the budget is spent on it. If you are paying 30K in income taxes and the provincial portion of the tax is roughly half it means you are paying about $7k in medical costs just for you. Of course all the other provincial taxes like PST just add to this cost. Are you getting decent services for this huge cost?
There is no need to wait at all. There are private surgical clinics in Ontario, Quebec and BC. You can get surgery in about two weeks.
Why are you people against healthcare? Have any of you actually been rushed to the hospital in an emergency? I have on 3 occasions. I got help right away and good treatment. Most of you on here sound too young to have any major health problems. Most of what I hear are people who seem to have a lot of extra money for private healthcare,. Most of us don’t. THe NDP’s drug plan is for people who don’t have a company plan. The cost will not be 700 million far from it. You are against anything that remotely looks like socialism. Stop and think about what you wish for, you may get it.

Cute story. My buddy moved to Florida serveral years ago and had a small business there with the basic family coverage for medical insurance. His wife became pregnent before her coverage was active so it cost him $25k for the delivery. She wanted no drugs during the delivery and he said okay. The pain was intense and she now wanted an epidural shot. He asked the doctor how much that was and he said $850. He turned to his wife and said “Patti, hang on just a little longer!”
In the interest of his self-preservation he paid.

Nobody is against government funded care, but state socialist monopoly on it is evil and must be abolished at any cost. I mean really, what IS the difference between Canada’s system and North Korea’s other than the amount of capital resources available? The Canada Health Act MUST be amended(says the Supreme Court) to allow privatized medicine or more Canadians will inevitably suffer.

Oooookay. I ain’t young anymore (dammit) but am a boomer. Anytime I’ve needed healthcare services, the benevolent all knowing system has provided it to me. Like when I tore my knee up oddly enough playing football. Well, not really football, just pitch and catch between 2 20 something guys. So 20 years later, when I just couldn’t put up with he constant ache anymore, and the knee was locking up
on a more regular basis, my regular family doctor (yes I have one nyah nyah nyah nyah nyah) got me an appointment with a specialist. I went to see my doc in Sept., my specialist appointment was in May, my surgery was in February. And it feels great now that it’s done. See, only 17 months. What a small price to pay for it all being free. Just because I could have spent about $2000 less by paying premiums for evil twisted private health care AND had the work done in 6 or so weeks, well, I wouldn’t be willing to go for that. By gum, it’s always better to pay more for less. That’s the Canadian way. Not the evil twisted American way.

Medicare was never planned to be the whole medical system for all Canadians. It was intended that NO Canadian would be without health insurance. But the liberals (small “l” on purpose) twisted that into a one size fits none program that is now overburdened and overwhelmed by what it must do. Coupled with the Federal government cutbacks in the 80s and 90s, we are now suffering from the worst of all worlds.
Emergency care under the Canadian system is quite good. Not great as it should be, but quite good. It’s the follow-up care, and the continuing care, and the chronic care that are suffering.
If you are happy with your “Chevy” level health care that’s fine with me. Just don’t tell me that I can’t upgrade to Pontiac, Buick or Cadillac health care if I am willing to pay for it. It will free up resources in the “Chevy” level and reduce wait times for all.
See, win-win. Now I realize that’s not the Canadian way, but wth, lets give it a try. It will work better than what we have, and has been proven in other parts of the world.
Waiting lists for whatever ails you won’t disappear until there is no financial incentive to have them. So let’s figure that out first.
If we are truly looking to improve Canadian healthcare, lets not use the U.S. as a model. Not saying parts aren’t better, just saying some parts are way worse too. Do some real research, and leave the knee jerks to the docs with the rubber hammers. WE NEED A BETTER SYSTEM.
The federal gov’t short changed medicare for many years. Lack of funding is the biggest problem. Alberta charges 400.00 a year per person for healthcare and thy’re not any better than here. If the feds would fully restore funding that would help. They want to underfund it and destroy it.
