After consulting many many experts, I set up the the following experiment using standard garden hose to represent a continent wide drainage system. My garden’s topography is a close representation of the geography of the North American continent. The grass had been cut by my gardener to an even height of 5cm. Note this hose is easily bendable, has no significant rigidity, and was not reinforced in any way. The hose was spliced and secured by green duct tape. |

From the link: “We continue to believe that the Northwest Passage is an international waterway,” said State Department official Robert Fisk.
The State Department’s official spokesman is a guy named Robert Fisk? Gads, the State Department is in worse shape than I thought.
On the face of it bulk water exports are probably the biggest bang for least cost – both financially and environmentally – export we have -provided that the water is taken in the most environmentaly benign way possible.
For example, taking the water from the Fraser River or the Mackenzie River 300 feet upstream from where they meet the sea has almost nil environmental impact (the amount of the outflow that would be taken is probably less than 1% of the total) whereas tapping into the Red Deer River pretty much anywhere would have a significant impact.
Water is probably the only issue that is more prone to hysterics than healthcare. The commonality between them both is that they are also amoung the least well understood issues.
The “many experts” link is truly sobering as to how utterly stupid some people are. Be sure and check it out…
Per the Globe and Mail link: “Liberal Leader Stéphane Dion alleged yesterday that there are secret talks under way between the Canadian and U.S. governments over bulk water exports to water-starved parts of the U.S.” It begs the question, if the talks are secret, how does he know about them? Dion also adds “I have information that I cannot show.” Of course you can’t show things that are created from out of a fantasy world of speculation and imagination i.e. he is making up this crap. It also begs the question, if Stephane Dion said he has proof the Easter Bunny is real but can’t show it, would then G&M publish this as hard-hitting insightful journalism? Stephie and the G&M were just made for each other.
Water exports to the US — Yea, now I getcha…….the hose model is perfect although grass cut to 5 cm? ARE YOU CRAZY !!! Anyone who believes THAT is in DENIAL.
I like the “green duct tape” solution as well…
Me confused…
I confess that I don’t get the significance of Dion’s allegations or the big deal about it. In the mid-90’s (under the Liberals, BTW), weren’t there serious discussions between Canadian/US authorities as well as state/provincial people from California and BC discussing exactly this.
I seem to remember serious talks about a water pipeline. As I recall, talks broke down when it became clear that BC (under the NDP) wanted to make the deal prohibitively expensive for the Americans.
True, I am relying on a faulty memory from living in BC at the time…but I don’t get what Dion’s point would be and I don’t really understand the “poke” that this post is making.
Maybe me just tired.
Ahhhhh , the water hose Deniers will be out in full force .
BTW
Al Gore claims there will be floods from rains and water shortages from the Global warming.
So basically , nobody has the brains to collect the rain as fresh water to be purified and re-routed , and somehow the Earth will have more water than when it was originally formed as a Planet.
Amazing , all that Ice in the North was never in a Liquid form to freeze in place .
It was centuries of frost layers that became solid water in the form of Ice.
Things that make you say….hmmmmmmmm?
It’s the SUN , stupid !
Here’s how it goes-
Maude Barlow’s (low water) paranoia kicks into high gear as word gets out that George Bush will be in Canada conferring with PM Harper.
Maude likely relays her terror stricken fear to Elizabeth May the uber Greenie and Al Gore acolyte.
Greenie May,in order to gain more traction for herself contacts Stephie Dion (her Nova Scotia political soulmate) with the Maude Barlow terror story of bulk water being diverted and sold to the much hated George Bush’s America.
And who carries the “bulk water” story to the world for Dion and Elizabeth May?
Why non other than the trusted voice of truth, Canada’s own leftist G&M.
Covering their editorial asses the G&M sensibly indicates that Dion “alleges” the water story as factual.
But Dion refuses to divulge.
So what can a reader of G&M now take from all this?
Truth or fabrication from pols or MSM with an agenda?
Ummmmm, out of curiosity, why don’t we have a prayer for Mexico? They’ve got a Cat 5 bearing down on them.
Or don’t they count because of political considerations revolving around illegal immigration to a country that isn’t even our own?
Now we know what the Conservative Secret Agenda for the next election will be.
Last time they were going to ban abortions. But since they’ve been in government and haven’t tried so the Liberals need a new boogie man.
Oh, and I know how Dion knows…. he got the super secret documents passed down to him from Martin when he took over leadership of the Party. SPP was initiated under the Liberals afterall. So of course they know about it.
Sending water in bulk to the USA is a great idea. It will help reduce the possibility of rising tides that are predicted by Gore, Suzuki and a cast of millions of idiots who are building arcs as I type this.
If we can get Americans to all drink a quart a day there will not be high water anywhere. They can then export their excess bulk urine to Hugo in Venezuela.
Seriously though … we should share our water or the US may decide to drain their side of the Great Lakes. Then what?
Oh God, the Truthers have gone international and extended their repertoire. The Council of Canadians is involved? Natch. The only upside here is that somebody can probably cash in by selling truckloads of tin foil hats to the lot of them.
By the way, your representation of the Don River is not far off its actual size in August.
“Ummmmm, out of curiosity, why don’t we have a prayer for Mexico?”
Apart from the fact that they have an “inland” to seek shelter in… it’s because they’re Mexicans.
And because, as racists, we care more about Jamaicans.
Now, take your comments to the appropriate thread. The satellite map updates with every refresh.
Instead of garden hoses we could sail icebergs down to California, you know, before they all melt.

Guess what folks, we already send water down to the US. It’s called:
1. The Columbia River
2. The Great Lakes
What does Dion plan on doing about it? Pick a fight with the US Navy?
Might want to re-think the Lake Winnipeg drain tube a bit.
Southern MB floods have usually been from the Red River. Flowing out of the US to Canada.
Dam(n) the Red.
This is so funny! Thank you!
I’m not concerned about bulk water exports. The CONservatives are resolute in defending our national interests.
Signed,
The United States of America
We have our own water here in america if the liberals would stop locking up our waters in WILD and SCENIC RIVERS and AMERICAN HERATAGE RIVERS and other eco-nazi plans
Actually,I see this as quite comforting.
If the LPC is STILL relying on playing the Harper/scary card as a core tactic, they’re in far worse shape than even I thought.
Americans…in our streets…with straws.
Want to see what water exports do? Look up the Soviets and the Arial Sea.
However, I am intrigued by the thought of exports from where fresh water meets tide water.
Yup, the Arial sea is in tough shape, and Lake Times New Roman dried up completely. ;>)
I only had to go as far as the comment about I have infomration I cannot show … at the best of times, that makes me walk away … coming from a politician, I’ll run … coming from Dion? sorry Kate, I can only … laugh!!!
Kudos, it fits so well with your “many experts” link … come on, you must have been saving that one for a while!!!
How did we get to the top of the food chain anyway???
Rick
Yo Spurwing,
You’ve also got lots of water down there that is being used to grow rice in the desert. Before it even gets there it runs through open canals, not pipes — and some of the canals aren’t even lined. Just get California farmers to start paying for that water and you’ll soon find you have have lots to spare. The idea that it is ever going to be be economical to ship bulk water from Canada to California and Arizona is improbable to say the least.
If we’d just take The National at face value, we’d understand that rock throwing IS a high form of patriotism, and that the word “protesters” is a pseudonym for “Canadians.”
Tonight’s National had three stories on the talks. Each inserted coverage of the tiny protests and the tiny-headed protesters in an either neutral or approving fashion; the negativity in coverage seemed directed at the usual suspects — Bush, Harper, big business, the security fence. Especially Bush, though.
Boag: “Bush may not be popular from coast to coast to coast, but he got a warm welcome here from the hotel staff, including the chef — which is a good thing, because the chef is cooking his meals….”
Dan Halton’s story starts: “If you build it, they will come. And the security fence stretching around the Chateau Montebello attracted nearly 1,000 protesters…”
Gee, they should have built it in Labrador, then.
The first protester to make use of the CBC’s anti-BushHarper soapbox service warbled “My message to Stephen Harper is to open the doors. To open the doors to the Canadian people, and get input from the Canadian people. That he needs to hear the voice of Canadians…”
— who throw billiard balls. And who’ll fight on. Halton closes: “Their eyes watery and their muscles sore, the protesters left, vowing to come back again tomorrow…”
Reporter Joan Leishman’s first soapboxer, one James Clark, asked: “Why aren’t people from civil society, from those from the trade-union movement, from the environmental movement, from basic grass-roots organizations, why have they been excluded from the SPP, why are they building a security perimeter ostensibly to exclude ordinary Canadians from turning up and making their voices heard?”
Leishman: “On the weekend, protesters DID make their voices heard. Some were furious with President Bush over the wars he’s ignited in Iraq and Afghanistan…”
Maude Barlow, in studio: “We’re talking about continental security measures, again, based on the Bush vision of the world, we’re talking about common defense, we’re talking about total harmonization of regulations, environmental, health, safety, food, agriculture and so on, we’re talking about the harmonizations of environmental policies, and a resource pact, further access of the Americans to both our energy and — it now turns out — to our water.
So there, you heard it from Maude Barlow, coast-to-coast on the CBC: Talks are underway to sell our water to “the Americans.” So what if it’s a lie? Our anti-Harper state broadcaster just blithely slipped it in as fact. Makes me wonder if it’s not something that, oh, say, Stephane Dion wants people to think, too.
Pull. The. Plug.
Thank-you for the colorful picture you painted for us Joe Molnar. The Lefto goofies -esp people like Maude, Calamidy Janie Tabour, the “twin Susies’ and Creig Olive oiler, really are twisted comedy when they get their knickers in a knot. Laugh out loud funny.
The mention of George Bush sends them into a hyper ventilating screech – did you see Creig reporting today – Creig cannot ride a bike apparently – too dangerous – and Susan Bonner was red faced and crusading for action by ‘others’! These people are not reporters, they are immature comedians!
I like your garden assembly Kate. I think you should market that plan to the Dippers since I think they would buy it; they can ‘throw’ it at the Conservatives in the next election campaign. As for the other guy who is the leader of the competition, sorry opposition: he will claim “Da proof ish da proof” and end all debate. That is the Liberano way, isn’t it?
While you’re all enjoying the spectacle of the Qlown from Quebec making a fool out of himself, watch out for fake conservatives picking your pockets.
It is absurd to believe that CAFTA and other trade agreements do not diminish American sovereignty. When we grant quasi-governmental international bodies the power to make decisions about American trade rules, we lose sovereignty plain and simple …
… we can be sure that CAFTA will provide yet another avenue for globalists to impose the Kyoto Accord and similar agreements on the American people. CAFTA also imposes the International Labor Organization’s manifesto, which could have been written by Karl Marx, on American business …
CAFTA means more government! Like the UN, NAFTA, and the WTO, it represents another stone in the foundation of a global government system. Most Americans already understand they are governed by largely unaccountable forces in Washington, yet now they face having their domestic laws influenced by bureaucrats in Brussels, Zurich, or Mexico City.
Of course Dion is a buffoon, but don’t forget – this meeting of our heads of state is not about “free trade” it’s about “managed trade”.
That garden hose experiment couldn’t possibly work because, uh, as we all know now, fire can’t melt steel.

RG,
But the heat from the sun can bring down a bridge….:->
I am trying to find a down side regarding harmonization of our environmental policies. Last I heard, we as Canadians had a much worse record as far as energy use is concerned vis-a-vis the americans. As well, if we could bring Mexico up to our standards regarding pollutants and discharges, it would make NA a much cleaner place. As I said, where is the down side here? And as far as water goes, we here in eastern Ontario are bursting our lakes are so full. Highest water levels in a long time. Do these morons actually think we are going to run out of fresh water?
“Highest water levels in a long time. Do these morons actually think we are going to run out of fresh water?

Well of course we are, kingstonlad. Don’t you know that all the rain we get is acid rain? Let’s see…water vapourizes, rises, becomes clouds, condenses(sp) on dust particles, then becomes rain, which replenishes the watershed. Ummmmm.Seems to me like Mother Nature has got a handle on it. But accorrding to the Kyoto Kult Nuts,we can conrol Mother Nature. Yeah right. And I can control the output of the sun. Next step,we can stop natural radioactive decomponsition of plutonium! Damn we are good.
Oh.And as an afterthought. What does BoratDion water his dog with?

Related story. The lake that our cottage is on is fed by 4 artesian wells. We have built a pump-house at the mouth of one of these wells. From this pump we feed 18 cottages. As well(no pun intended), an American company comes twice a week and fills a big tanker to be used for some upscale drink sold in the states. One of the residents(a former hippy, and current socialist)actually bitched that the tanker loads were going to drain the well. Even once an engineer assured him that we were taking less than .00001%, it still was not good enough for him. We had a vote, and he was shut down. He bitched just for the sake of bitching. His anti-Americanism is quite pathetic.
Its apparent that not long ago Barlow was looking for some evening entertainment and couldn’t bear watching american reruns on the CBC…(Maude owns a TV!! who knew). She decided to finally take the shrink wrap off the copy of H2O and give it a watch. Imagine the shock old Maude had as she confused fiction for a coded message being sent to her from the CBC that a deal was in the works to sell out the nations water supply vis a vis a secret international corporate cartel. As was stated in previous post, she immediately related the news to another operative Lizzie May with the knowledge that she would get the message to Stuffy Dion leader of the NGP.
Unfortunately Stuffy didn’t get the story validated before spouting off to the media or Marc the Martinite Marrisen is still his advisor.
It’s the “ARAL” sea (although Google lists a small number of improper spellings). The situation with the Aral sea has nothing to do with bulk water exports. However, it does have an awful lot to do with water diversion for farmland in the area, and is a tragic example of shortsighted ecological thinking. Now, the Aral sea has shrunk dramatically and farmers in the area are having difficulty due to water shortages. Lose-Lose.
It’s becoming more apparent with every “press release” from Dion,he’s out of his league. It’s one silly statement after another and you have to hear reruns to get the drift of it.
Juvenile is what comes to mind. He has to know bloody well, that Harper is not a stupid person and would never compromise our water supplies by draining it off to the US.
This is pure Liberal hatred for the US as well as Harper. They’re starting to get a new Harper “hidden agenda” going, the old ones didn’t pan out.
Harper is a challenge for the Dionski and the Libranos, he’s far more cerebral than anything they’ve faced in some time. More importantly, he doesn’t suffer fools like the Lib/Left Hacks and Hounds in the MSM.
Lets give them all a good hosing next election with a Harper Majority, put them out of their
misery for a long spell.
“we should share our water or the US may decide to drain their side of the Great Lakes”
Well, as long as it is only their side, who cares? Thank you Kate for my morning laugh although I’m a bit surprised that nobody has picked up on the “hoser” plan. Take off, eh.
What a silly post, childish and dull. You’re mentally-challenged, Ms. McMillan
Spit the coffee on the keyboard over this one.
Thanks Kate!
Missed Manners is humour-deprived…
We here in southern Georgian Bay have experienced the lowest levels in years, A river & waterfalls here that flows to Geo.Bay is dry. We have a city counciler that wants drastic action & of course blames global warming, The US,etc.. & in the meanwhile a major auto manufacturer wants to build a water pipeline from the bay to its plant.
I had a chance to chat with the counciler and said to him have you driven around the bay & the sound lately, Have you considered the fact that there are more people living in a closer prox. to the water then 20yrs ago so demand is very high.
I live in Marquette Michigan along the southern boarder of Lake Superior and I have been draining our side of the Lake one cupful at a time. BTW — we are under a “Severe Drought” and might start taking 2 cups a day !!! That’ll teach you Canada !!!
Orlin,
What a shock, the lake levels of Superior are low because of drought on the watershed not because of a big drain through Lake St Clair.
The City of London gets its water through a pipeline from Grand Bend on Lake Huron and has been for a decade or so.
Population of London is around the 350,000 mark.
Water levels in Lake Huron have been low for twenty years or more.
And you can do better Miss Manners? Please, inform us plebes.I guess pointing out the stupidity of leftards is childish? Maybe you should move to Venezuala, and let us know how that works out.
The MSM coverage of events in Montebello yesterday was the most dismal and philistine in my memory…truly uninformed, truly misdirected and focused on the irrelevant…besides being psychotically biased, I see the Kanukistani MSM are also functionally retarded.
The SPP meetings have been on for 2 1/2 years…..the media coverage has been dismal….a little investigative digging reveals it is not about trade…it is about blended economics, civilian ID and micromanagement and integration of government agencies, there was even some talk of blended taxing….and it entails a good deal of lost individual and nation sovereignty.
The American republican right was the first to see the breech in constitutional and congressional protocol in the SPP process….unfortunately it was the fringe left in Canada who have been making emotional fear mongering on SPP …it is unfortunate they are the messenger to alert the Canadian public as they don;t have much validity ( and don’t with me personally) Lost in this is the fact they are correct that the transparency on SPP deatils is sadly lacking, the NGO input is exclusive, and the talks need public exposure and mandate to move forward…..we need to set a line for the negotiators as to how far we go in surrendering sovereingty for benefits.
Also at the Montebello protests were a lot of credible people from the American right ( Jerome Corsi and others from republican right orgs, also ex trade officials from Mexico and the US) all these credible opposition forces held a formal news conference to make public what they discovered about SPP ( through freedom to info requests) and to voice concern over the unneeded secrecy and the exclusive lobbies invited as players in the process.
These press scrums were rational and informative and over an hour long….but what did we get in the Kanukistani MSM?…
Either uninformed spin about the nature of the SPP talks ( obviously because our journalist forces were totally blank on what is on the table) or a focus on the usual human garbage that follows Bush and Harper around (I’m beginning to wonder if Bush hires these nihilist idiots to make him look more credible).
By focusing on the vulgarity of fringe politics and offering sophistry instead of information on the issue at hand, the MSM has proven to me to be a negative force in public awareness on large issues that effect national changes.
The SPP talks involve areas of Canadian sovereignty that warrant public transparency abd debate….we see that the media, the politicians and the Lobbies involved are actively spinning the gravity of SPP as “just friendly talks” and avoiding the darker details which have turned up in SPP documentation…there is a observed attempt to limit information and public debate….consequently we get loons like Fogal and Dion offering their silly paranoid suppositions on the SPP and detracting from the gravity of the issue.
…don’t turn your back on the SPP details because of the way the opposition is portrayed in the jackshite media clouding of the issue….get yourself informed…read what Corsi has found out…make up your mind where friendly cooperation ends and loss of sovereignty begins….
…the Canadian MSM will sure as hell be of no assistance in your quest for info on SPP.
They just reported on the news on the radio that NO protestors showed up today. Awwwww 🙁
