650 CKOM’s John Gormley had an exclusive interview with Saskatoon-Biggar-Rosetown MP Carol Skelton this morning. She announced that she would not be running during the next election.
Carol isn’t up and leaving just yet, she’ll be sticking around until the election.
Both myself and Kate live in Carol’s riding and I am of the opinion that she is the best MP I’ve ever had representing me. If Kate hadn’t been doing a dog show, she’d probably have a much more extended article, but as she’s away I figured I should share the news.
Now then . . . who’s up for a draft Kate nomination meeting. 🙂

I’m a university professor and from experience of other university professors – having a degree means nothing, absolutely nothing, in terms of the ability to think, to be logical, to be unbiased, to be critical, to be fair and even, to have a knowledge of history, of geography etc etc.
Indeed, most of the academic world – except for the sciences – lives in a self-defined, self-written fictional world.
Mark Steyn doesn’t have a degree and he’s a LOT smarter than most of my academic colleagues.

From my perspective, Mark Steyn could take ’em both down.
Iggy with his freaking wandering, meandering trains of thought and Dion simply at sea in both languages, can’t even pin fuzzy logic on him.
The halls of higher learning are getting a break from them at our expense.
liz j – I fully agree with your view of both Ignatieff and Dion. I had previously thought better of Ignatieff – He had supported the Iraq war, and saw the role of the US as necessary for stability and democracy in the world – since the UN had moved rapidly out of its original idealism and into a basic relentless corruption and hindrance to democracy and justice.
But, Ignatieff has become politicized. I see this current recanting of his support as a move towards taking over from Dion. Dion is a typical sociology professor – isolated from reality, living in the fictional cloud of words and ideas, pompous and authoritarian, patronizing etc. I think the Liberal Old Guard are going to move against Dion in the fall and crown Ignatieff. Before an election.

Except for the sciences? Well how about the legal world or financial world? Should we have ministers in government in this country running the Department of Justice with no training in law? Would you say we should have ministers controlling the nation’s finances with no training in finance? Sounds like it could be a costly venture for the country if we did that.
ET, if you are a university professor as you claim you should know that a university education is not intended to demonstrate intelligence, but rather to give them the tools to work in their selected field. Sorry but if a person is placed in charge of the finances of the nation or in charge of controlling the laws for it’s population they need some formal training in that field.
What does this tell the attentive voter? Skelton isn’t really in charge of Revenue Canada, she’s nothing more than a figure head being controlled by senior cons like Harper and Flaherty

No trouble finding Lawyers in the government ranks, it’s one profession that has become a stepping stone to politics. It gives them a leg up to weasel in and out of sticky situations. As a profession it is rapidly losing respect and honor from many quarters giving true meaning to “the law is an ass”.
We have had many Finance ministers with zero “training” in the field, Chretien and Martin to name two.
Flaherty has experience and that counts for a lot while Harper has a Masters in Economics, not too shabby.
Skelton is well qualified for the post she is now filling.
However albatrass, we know there is no Conservative qualified in your view, so we won’t consider it objective.

Now theres a man with lots of qualifications for the job he has, but is being slagged for being ineffective.

We need only go back to the Chretien years in power to know bloody well Da Little Guy was telling Martin where the bucks would flow.
We all know some of them flowed out in the wind and they both told the wind not to divulge where it would land, only the general direction was stipulated.
Speaking of the Defence Portfolio, O’Connor is the best we’ve had in memory. Looking at some who filled that post under recent Liberals we have no doubt what the Liberals think of the Military, it’s at the bottom of the heap.

Gordon O’Connor? He may have been a brigadier general but for some reason retired shortly after promotion. O’Connor is the classic example of the military promoting someone to the level of incompetence.
Alby, you are an example of someone of low rank (sorry WOs out there, but face facts), who knows nothing and is likely promoted to “the level of incompetence.” From what I’ve seen, you’re no leader, so you shouldn’t comment on the leadership abilities of others. Many posters have pointed out they will give the benefit of the doubt to O’Connor and others over the opinions of a bad-attitude NCO. You should take heart at those comments; you’re way out of your league on credibility.

Harper will do a cabinet shuffle and all the media Birdbrains will have to start from scratch getting the dirt on the new Cabinet Ministers to get the smears and sneers going.
O’Connor is not a slick politician, he is not quick with the quip when asked questions by ignorant hacks. He’s a military man of some thirty years experience serving this country. He deserves respect for that but will not get it from the Left and their minions in the media. If Harper replaces him it will be more to the benefit of O’Connor who has been putting up with the ignoramuses than to the Defence Portfolio.
Re: war crimes. Are you refering to the turning over non-identifiable talibans ? Rules do not apply to the masquarading terrorists. One simple solution, take no prisoners.

I would actually prefer to have seen a CA with experience in public practice being Revenue Minister. It would be good to have someone who understands how the tax auditors screw up at the expense of taxpayers. Sure, it can always be fixed at appeals or tax court, but that costs the taxpayer unneeded professional fees.
About the education thing, Maz had no post secondary education and was universally respected, but he had real life experience dealing with people.
