Folks, a minor point of clarification before you all go off with the wrong impression.
In French, all provincial premiers are “premiers ministres” whether they be from Québec, PEI or Alberta.
The French word “premier” cannot be used on its own this way as it can in English because it simply means “first” so “le premier” would just mean something like “the first one.”
Beyond all this though, I am personally saddened and truly disappointed to see this sort of nasty anti-Semitism raising its ugly head in Québec again.
I always thought that less-than-salubrious chapter of French Canadian history had finally been put to bed some time ago.

John, which is more energetic: a cosmic ray particle or the alpha particles from uranium radioactivity? Hint, you can block alpha particles with lead foil, while cosmic ray experiments are done at the bottoms of salt mines. Spitball vs. Saturn V is off by a few orders of magnitude on the small side.
Those guys didn’t even try. The comparable example would be some guy trying to disprove the Haber process by running it at room temperature and pressure. They didn’t even do that much, just said they observed no increase in cloud cover due to Chernobyl and inferred that cosmic rays therefore do not cause clouds. That’s idiotic.
As for Dr. Lockwood, its great that he said that and all but

B) either Jupiter and other celestial bodies in our solar system are getting extra energy from someplace, or they aren’t. Melting/storm increase says yes. I have yet to see any convincing refutation of either the observations or a non-solar explanation for same.

MCpl Lepage is the crew commander of 32C; his crew is comprised of soldiers from 12 RBC. Army News caught up with the troops near the end of their training and all of them were itching to get on the range and fire the powerful 120mm gun.

Rothschild is badly misinformed, Mars and the Gas Giants are where they always have been. I don’t know where he went to school, but he didn’t learn much about simple astronomy. I think we would have noticed three whole planets slipping by, unless they did it at night. Not to mention that we would now be a moon of Saturn or Jupiter, if we weren’t flung out of the solar system entirely.
The host of the show Alex Jones is also misinformed. Nothing I can find indicates that the moons of Jupiter and Saturn are melting. Cassini has seen no evidence of melting around Saturn and melting of, say, Europa would be big news from NASA that even James Hansen couldn’t suppress.

I’m not sure how much the Chernobyl accident relates to Svensmark’s work. It would appear to be tentative at best. The authors used an immediate vicinity of 2.5 degrees longitude by 2.5 degrees latitude apparently centred on Chernobyl. That’s a box about 120 miles on each side. The direct radiation from Chernobyl would be severly reduced by the inverse square law dropping rapidly at a small distance from the accident site. By including the large area, some 14,400 square miles, the authors dilute further any possible effect of the radiation sourced at Chernobyl.
Secondly, its interesting that the authors use a smoothed curve for sun spot activity against a raw curve for cloud cover. (fig 1) Since sun spots fall to zero or near zero between cycles, this is misleading as it implies that sun spots are almost constant.
I’m not saying that they are wrong, just not as persuasive as needed to counter Svensmark.

Phantom: the question isn’t which type of radiation is more energetic, but what is the ion density it produces. Alpha particles are very good at ionizing since they are fairly large. In the paper they estimate the ratio of ionization between Chernobyl and cosmic rays to be 15:1 in the area.

The immediate vicinity used by the study was 2.5 degrees by 2.5 degrees. At about 60 miles per degree lat and long, that amounts to a box 120 miles on a side or 14,400 square miles. I just checked the numbers and it comes out to 69 miles per degree latitude. Longitude varies from equator to pole, but is close to 60 miles at 50 degrees north. If I were more precise, the numbers would be 120 miles by 138 miles to equal 16,680 square miles. While really big clouds can cover thousands to miles on a side, the little guys that could be caused by Chernobyl would be much smaller and confined to a smaller foot print.
The other flaw that I see in their Chernobyl analogy is that the radiation from the accident is going up, through dense atmsosphere. The cosmic radiation is comming down through much thinner atmosphere. I suppose if we could do a controlled experiment where we melted down the Chalk River reactor near Ottawa, so nobody gets hurt, we could run monitoring to see if the upward bound radiation matched the incoming cosmic radiation. I doubt that anyone is going to approve that one.
I’m just putting out a hypothesis here, I don’t claim to know very much about radiation except for an undergrad course I did in biomedical engineering radiation. Means squat here.

I’m hoping that consumers will see through the rhetoric about consuming less, demanding less, as faulty. It is not a given that consuming less will be good for our economy or for our personal freedom. It is not even established for our environment that we [should] deprive ourselves of gasoline for our personal mobility as well our commerce. And to suppose that it is good to do that, and pretend that we have consensus and put our heads together to deprive ourselves of this great product that makes the country go around, commercially and individually, I think is flawed. I’m hoping consumers and voters will see through that and be able to ignore some of the most extreme suggestions.
John Cross, all I’m saying is that a comparison between a nuclear reactor leak and cosmic rays is invalid. The particles don’t behave the same way. Apples, oranges.
Here’s the thing that bothers me in all this. We don’t even know if cosmic rays have anything to do with cloud formation, its just a “gee, I wonder if…” theory at this point. Yet already there’s guys pumping out sloppy science aimed at discrediting the idea. Nothing to see here, move along.
We are arguing, at base, about a measurement of 0.5 degrees C change in “average” temperature. A measurement made in a politically charged atmosphere by politically savvy observers. You don’t get to run expensive scientific experiments if you can’t tell which way the wind is blowing, so to speak.
A lot of people I have no reason to trust (Algore, David Suzuki, this Rothschild putz) are working really hard to sell me this CO2-based warming theory. The scientific funding community, those who hold the purse strings, like the CO2 theory. The media love the CO2 theory.
I just wonder why there’s a new “Red Spot” storm on Jupiter. Now there are two of them. Saturn has seen an increase in observed storm activity over the last several years, as mentioned on various astronomy web sites. Mars is melting.
I’m not an astronomer or a physicist. But I look at the big picture of society and I notice there’s a hell of a lot of money moving in response to this climate change uproar. Example, check out the price of uranium and the stock price of uranium producers the last couple of years. Through the roof! That’s a lot of money. Check out the price of corn while you’re at it, and the stock price of John Deere.
Do I want there to be 100 to 200 new nuclear reactors in North America and Europe just because its fashionable to fear global warming? Do I want food to be super expensive because my car runs ethanol instead of gasoline due to fear of global warming?
I don’t think so. I’d like an expenditure of that size to be based on something more than smoke and mirrors, given that the dough to pay for it is coming out of my hide.

Phantom: I understood your point, but all I am saying is that the important thing is the way the two ionize the atmosphere. The ions are what cause the condensation.
However I do not agree with your idea that the theory should be given a free ride at this point. Science is a brutal business. If you publish something it is fair game for people to criticize it. That is the way the field works.
I have no political interests and I am very willing to confess that I don’t understand politics well. But I do understand some of the science and that is what I use as the basis for my arguments.

Phantom, I agree with your arguement that we need to know a whole lot more before we commit to spending what will amount to trillions of dollars to reduce CO2 for a negligable benefit of maybe 0.05 degrees C over 100 years. Especially given the fact that spending a quarter of that money to address the current problems of starvation, HIV, malaria, childhood diseases, etc would go a long way to actually helping the environment in the long run.
Is there sufficient evidence, right now, to say for sure that cosmic rays affect our climate? No, but the evidence is mounting. Similarily, there is still no incontrovertible evidence that CO2 has anywhere near the effect that the IPCC claims. We don’t know what we know for certain and that bothers me as Al Gore and David Suzuki and now Rothschild are running around hand waving and telling scary stories.

I’d like to see that paper. Cycle 22 was fairly strong and cycle 23 was only 20% smaller. So I don’t see how that relates to going the wrong way. A solar minimum would be the wrong way but we haven’t seen that over the past 20 years. Just for refernce, cycle 24 is late by over a year. Tat could mean cooling, we will know soon, one way or the other.

ron in kelowna, I’m not sure what your point is, can we disprove any of those things, well yes, at least one of them anyway. Do a random study on the effectiveness of snake oil as a hair restoring agent.
But I’m not argueing for AGW, but against it as John Cross can easily attest. Climate changes, laways has and always will. The earth has warmed and it has cooled and the cycle will repeat until the sun goes out. CO2 goes up and it goes down, we can’t stop it from doing so except in the most meaningless ways and for no net benefit. But, like I said, time will tell, since we don’t have enough data or enough current intelligence to say for certain what will happen outside of a few models that purport ot accuratley forecast the future climate.

I meant ‘prove to’ the Gores and Suzukis of the world. Especially when one has to counter the media’s massive disinformation campaign.
A fraud will always be proven a fraud. Eventualy. Some take a long, long time. But in the meantime a lot of people can get hurt —- some by a huge wealth transfer.

Peak Oil has already occurred in the US in 1970. Are you saying the Americans were victims of a fraud?
Even CERA, the most wildly optimistic oil forecaster out there, say it will occur in 2030, 23 short years from now. ‘Peak’ by the way has nothing to do with ‘running out’, just that the flow of production can’t go higher.
Unless you can positively demonstrate oil is an infinite resource, it’s going to happen.
I referred to Peak Oil as in the ‘world’s peak’, not just the USA.
Sure, it will happen — to total world ‘flow’ also. But is probably a long way down the road.
The world was supposed to run out of oil many times; in the twenties, along comes Texas — then again in the seventies, along comes Hibernia and North Sea — and then again in the eighties, along comes Alberta — now again ….
Yes, I guess the ‘peak’ part commonly refers to flow, not reserves. But is the flow problem not partly caused by the eco-fanatics restrictions on drilling/production ?? That is the fraud I was refering to. Sorry for the confusion 🙂
Polution controls — absolutely. Seems that the industry’s record of late has been quite good. Haven’t heard of a Chadabuckdo Bay or a Valdez in a long time. That is good.
Nothing major since Saddam’s spiteful sabotage. (Imagine if the West had done that ? Ballistic Suzuki.)
