One comment suggested that China would move into fascism, claiming that fascism was ‘halfway’ between socialism and capitalism. No, it’s not and China won’t move into fascism. It will become more capitalist and it will ease up on the one-child per family (no choice)..or…hmmm…will it encourage migration or immigration? Unreal.

The ratio of men to women in some of the most crime ridden sections of America or Europe is not distorted like this. Why aren’t all those women keeping the men in line?

I watched an interview of young women in China. Womens lib is in full stride. Better educated, worldly. Settle down? Not on your life. The sexual revolution has arrived in China and most educated women have decided that they would prefer to live the free life. Get married to look after some young man’s family? Not a chance. The competion is fierce for brides and the better educated are opting to live a little before settling down and when they do, it will to to the man of their choice, not their parents. Well having natural hetero sex in China will be interesting however the fallout from this is illegal….no new chinese can be born unless by licence.
In the late 90’s most of the “Asian Tiger” countries hit an economic wall. After years of amazing growth, corruption finally led to a major setback. (This really affected BC more than the rest of Canada as it does a much greater percentage of its trade with Asia than any other province.)
China’s growth based on crony capitalism is unsustainable. It will follow the same path as the Asian tigers that preceeded it. I’d invest in democratic India before I would put a dime in China.
It is NOT hard to imagine China as being any worse than it is now.

It’s not without historical precedent. China had much worse imbalances in the 19th century and the result were two very bloody civil wars.
The article linked to reads like the author is playing armchair quarterback about a vast country that he isn’t that familiar with. Bruce Gottfred may feel he knows everything he needs to know to predict the future of China but I don’t share his confidence in his crystal ball.

Done already in 2005. If a newly married couple each come from single child homes, they are now allowed to have two children.
Also, the “one child” policy is misnamed. The policy should more correctly be called “two shots at a boy”. In most provinces if the first child is a boy, the family was finished. However, if the first child is a girl, the couple was allowed to try one more time to get a boy.
China’s population control policy automatically favors a larger male population. It’s only perceived as a problem to the world outside China. To China’s government, the population male/female disparity is by design. The near term philosophy appears to be to overwhelm competition not only with strength from numbers but with gender as well.
Anyone want to guess how common infantcide or abandoned babies are in rural China when the second child is a girl? The abandoned babies are the lucky ones.
If you want to see what this is like, you can see it in reverse at any canadian university where women outnumber the men.
