So I finished writing this in time to catch Steve Doocy on Fox & Friends ask a pair of Colorado farmers, whose cattle are stranded in the snow: “So has anybody out there applied for a FEMA trailer yet? Getting any $2,000 cash cards…?” to the hearty laughter of his interviewees.

Sarge, are you really a “sarge” of some description or is that just a nickname you gave yourself? Cuz people who give themselves nicknames are usually pretty silly.
The city’s evac plan sucked. Do tell. And why do the poor people keep electing the corrupt, incompetent officials who thought up said sucked plan?
Why do people choose to live below sea level, generation after generation? Why do they later blame others for the consequences of their lazy, stupid decisions?
I think you’ll find that a timeline of the Donner Party’s misadventures puts the lie to your “in no time” assertion. And the fact that we still remember and revile the Donner Party indicates that the incident was rare and widely condemned to this day. Same with the Andes rugby team.
There was no cannibalism in New Orleans. However, those rumours were started by locals themselves. Can you explain why locals made up out of whole cloth weird stories about raped babies and bodies in freezers, and broadcast them around the world?
Sounds way more pathological to me than truly desperate folks scraping a bit of frozen flesh off a long dead commrade, and hating themselves forever for doing so.
There is something truly wrong with a large population of people for whom criminal behaviour is acceptable, corruption is greeted with a lazy shrug, anti-social behaviour is applauded (not to mention _the very first thing_ they turn to in a crisis, rather than helping their neighbours).
What really upsets them is that finally the rest of the world got to see the way these people lived day to day, just on a grander scale. They’re embarrassed that people in the outside world saw how helpless, foolish, selfish and idiotic they were. It’s like someone taking pictures of your dirty house and printing them on the front page of the paper, times one million.
Except a normal person would be embarrassed and say Oh God, I have to clean my house. I really am a disgrace.
New Orleans people said George Bush made my house messy. Then went back to live in the messy house and liked it.
Sick.
Donner Party.
the Donners were on a trail 150 years ago, about 300 miles from the nearest infrastructure( if you could call in that- a dock in San Francesco bay area)
They lasted several months before starting to eat each other, much longer than the Uraguay football team who had all the technology of the 20th century. They also layed about for several weeks before making any decision to help themselves.
Compare New Orleans with planes and trains and automobiles and but a gutless and entitled population that dissolved into anarchy in but a week.
Actually, the 1st murder occured in the Donner party almost immediatly after they realised that things were going wrong. You might want to re read this story, it’s about more than just canibalism.
Shaidle…is that a jewish name?
“that does not in any way diminsish the heroism or sacrifice of those who endured Katrina.”
Heroism? Sacrifice? Of what, sitting on your lazy butt because you think the government should come save you, instead of saving yourself?
You’re correct about one thing: Colorado and Katrina (NO) aren’t comparable. But the way residents of Mississippi and New Orleans are, since Katrina hit both with equal force and destruction. And like the Colorado farmers, the people in Mississippi saved themselves, and didn’t sit on their butts waiting to be saved.
Heroism? Sacrifice? Please.
Penny is making a little inside joke, folks. Please don’t attack him. 🙂
I’m still waiting for somebody to call me either “racist” or a “bad Christian”. Usually happens by this time. I’m half disappointed… and kinda impressed.
“Heroism”? “Sacrifice”? indeed. Had the average New Orleans citizen the vaguest understandings of such things, we wouldn’t be having this conversation. Frankly, I doubt they could even spell those words.
Why does this subject still strike us on such a visceral level? For me, it is because the more disapated among the citizens of New Orleans are a threat to national security. Period. We will not survive the onslaught of Islamic terrorists if millions of people in the general population are that shiftless and adrift.
Thank God for the brave, unappreciated National Guardsman who performed the literally thankless job of saving these people’s butts. They are truly heroic and sacrificial and men and women like them may be our only reason for hope. That America still produces such individuals is both an inspiration and (after generations of nanny state brainwashing) a minor frickin’ miracle.
Race has nothing to do with Katrina and never has. The results of government dependence have everything to do with it, and the lesson would be the same no matter the racial makeup of New Orleans.
There were plenty of blacks in Mississippi who were displaced by Katrina. They took responsibility for themselves. Race was never the issue.
murder— Id guess the first murder in New Orleans would be maybe an hour after the hurricane.

I dont think the Donners ever screamed for the gubmint to come help them – out of cell phone range by 150 years.
Please do not confuse “Penny” with me, penny. Just noticed.
Yes, Kathy Shaidle is Jewish by birth; she’s a convert to Catholicism. She used to be an anarchist; she hasn’t learned logic, manners, decency or civility in the time since.
All in all, the fact this miscreant would be attracted to Catholicism says an awful lot about the current state of Catholicism and none of it is good.

We have all heard endless rhetoric from black leaders about how james brown gave the black man pride. After watching the katrina fiasco, I think most of the black population sat back and said, I have pride, so I don’t have to take care of me, the government has to. Most people take pride in what they accomplish, on their own, and deserve the pride. Someone should tell jessie and al that pride means more than a word. Time for them to fade out of the picture, and for blacks to pay attention to what Bill Cosby has told them.
Hey i see where PETA turned down a invatation to feed those stranded cattle saying they would end up in the sluaghter house and then PETA has these holywood idiots like ALEC BALDWIN and PAMELA ANDERSON doing stupid ads for them? proves that PETA may yammer a lot about compassion but they sure dont practice it and would rather spend the money sent to them on printing all that propeganda and running around in silly costumes
About the “below sea level” thing: Yes, the decision to build New Orleans where it is (made by white French Catholics, of course), although originally done for strategic and economic reasons, proved not very bright in the long run. On the other hand, I think conservatives should have a bit more respect for people who feel attached to their ancestral homeland and continue to live where their parents, grandparents, and remoter ancestors did. After all, if we were morally obliged to evacuate all unsafe cities, that would be the end of Amsterdam (below sea level), Tokyo (partially below sea level), Venice (barely above sea level), Manhattan (barely above sea level), Los Angeles and San Francisco (the “Big One” could come any day now), and probably lots of other places as well. It’s not hard for me to see why people who love these cities continue to live in them rather than resorting to pre-emptive evacuation, and the same goes for New Orleans as well in my book.
New Orleans started off above Sea Level.the french quarter is the highest natural area. the city was expanded to the levees along the river which are also higher than average but are depositional features so obviously floods and/or tides come that high. Later they drained the inbetween lowlands between the deltaic channels and levees. draining these plus the subsidize of the sediment load our in the pulled the city below sea level in some areas .
Amsterdam is similar, it is on the Rhine delta, Alexandria the same on the Nile delta. and Venice on the outlet of the Po. major portions of alexandria are already beneath the waves. venice has stayed just about water for about 1000 years. again, pumping water from under the islands has caused subsidence. the venice delta islands were likely caused by large glacial outflows.
sediments in the gulf coast are 20000 ft thick mostly outflowed from the mississippi drainage basin. its a huge subsidence load.
by the by, the Dutch have abandoned some areas that they consider unsustainable and turned them into yachting parks.
cal2: Thank you. That only reinforces my point.
“Shaidle…is that a jewish name?”
Pardon me, but first, how is that an appropriate question, and second, what business is it of yours?
