You Can Make This Stuff Up!

When you’re a Winnipeg Free Press columnist;

Now, columnists frequently use their positions to embarrass some employee of a restaurant, clothing store, airport, or other business that fails to give them the respect they’re sure is due to “a public figure”, as Hansen put it.
But this columnist picked a fight with the wrong patsy.
The Liquor Commission promptly fought back with all guns blazing. Starting with videotape of the incident and following with written statements from people who saw and heard what happened.
Oh Oh.

  1. Oh well, he can always get a job at AP. They seem to like made up stories.
I wonder if he hangs a girls sweater over the back of a chair at parties and says his girlfriend is in the washroom. At least he won’t have to share his “promising Chilean merlot” with anyone.

  2. I’m just trying to figure out how this dude, Dallas Hansen, got a job writing a column at all. Aside from being a rogue and scoundrel, he’s an absolutely terrible writer!
The Winnipeg Free Press is well rid of this swaggardly blowhard windbag. In keeping with the well-worn practice of nepotism in the Canadian MSM, I can only surmise that Hansen must be somebody’s son, nephew, cousin, or neighbour.
It p***es me off that so many good writers, with no connections, are languishing in dead-end jobs while parasites like Hansen are given bully pulpits in the press.
Mediocrity begets worse than mediocrity. No wonder so many are turning to blogs. Thanks, Kate for the articulate, informed forum SDA offers its readers. Who needs any of the big MSM outlets when Kate can bring us all the news that’s actually fit to print.

  4. hansen is really toast now. if nepotism got him in it didnt keep him there, and it only works in the store where the nepotist is. hansen has crapped in the nest and got booted for it. he needs to start sending his resume to the fast food restaurants, using his talent for hyperbole in the process.
    looks good on him.

  5. I saw the Glass thing on film:
    3w dot imdb.com/title/tt0323944/
    lots of this going on.
the infamous restaurant critique who instead of going undercover, use their high recognizability to get exclusive and maximum first class service, thus demolishing the whole point of getting an unbiased, average level of service (whatever that level of service is compared to other restaurants)and reporting on THAT.

  6. We have to remember that Winnipeg is in the middle of nowhere so that is why some people feel might important around there. Look at our buddies at Canwest for example.

  7. He sounds like prime journalistic material for such publications as the New York Times, or The Washington Post.
Better yet, are his chances on CBC or CNN.
I am sure they could use his story telling ability in as many diverse ways, that his peers there now employ.
By the way the dying of the ACLB in Alberta was the best thing to happen. Not only for the consumer but the employee’s as well.
Still, the end never justifies the means. Lying in a good cause is still lying. It only taints it more.

  8. Its just like what happned when NBC s program DATELINE trieda big fruad against GM trying to convince us that GM pick-ups were fire traps it was later found out that NBC had rigged the whole thing with incerary devices they also overfilled the tank and used the wrong sized gas cap and later the same year ABC had a fruadulaent story about the store chain FOODLION it was also fruadelent i mean you cant ever trust these damn left-wing journalists

  9. spurwing plover – while I agree that Dateline can no longer be trusted. Could you share with us what a wrong size gas cap would be? I have never run across one that doesn’t fit the hole unless we’re talking bayonet style vs. screw in.
The gas caps on the GM products have a one size fits all type thread & that’s been present since the late 70’s. This creates it’s own problem since you can use a non-vented cap on the newer closed systems possibly causing the fuel tank to collapse.

  10. I don’t see the problem here.
The guy is a delusion conspiracy monger who makes up stories, abuses his position and has imaginary girlfriends.
Isn’t that the definition of a journalist? Are there any other type?

  11. Its’ high time to take all the MSM, newspapers, radio, TV, journalists, the whole lot of them to the back alley, hand them a gun with one bullet….
AND LET THEM BLOW THEIR OWN F&*&ING BRAINS OUT.
Like putting an old dog out of it’s misery.

  12. Hansen is a twerp. He did have a few half-decent columns on urban architecture and planning. But he completely discredited himself, in my opinion, long before the bogus liquor store bully pulpit. Screeds about why it’s ok for skateboarders to torment shopping mall patrons and why vandalism of commercial buildings should be considered art directed me away from his ravings quite some time ago.
Now if the freep could only do something about Frances Russell and Gordon Sinclair, I might start reading their columns again.

  13. Now I know what the “Free” in Winnipeg Free Press stands for : their columnists are free to make up any damned story they please, just so long as they don’t get caught at it.
    🙂

  14. While the bogus “trip to the LB” story started off this thread, it seems the general thrust of the comments are against the “MSM”, and since this tends to be a right wing blog I assume this means the “MSM” has a supposed “left wing Bias” and is therefore suspect. Or is the “MSM” media just suspect by default?
I may have missed it, but did anyone here comment on [The Right Wing] Fox New’s take on the Mark Foley Scandel? Mark Foley was a Republican, but Fox News insisted on labelling him a Democrat…over and over. Is Fox news secretly “Left Wing”? Do they fall into the category “MSM”?
    http://www.boingboing.net/2006/10/04/fox_news_identifies_.html
So, is the “MSM” generally suspect, or just the supposed “Left Wing” portions of it?

  15. “A promising merlot”, he said as he adjusted his ascot, and glanced lovingly at his evanescent girlfriend.
Bravo Kate. A priceless look into the mind and character of a 9/11 conpiracy nut.
PROJECTION. In the same situation he would do it, therefore Bush must have done it.

  16. Murray: it’s ALL media. My dad taught me, at a fairly young age, “all media are biased”.
However, I’ve seen that most of the lies and spin come, in decreaing order, from CBCpravda, CNN, CTV (the OWL Oliver and Giggles Taber strike again), and so on. Check the ratings for Fox News and compare them to CNN or MSNBC. It gives a good idea of who’s actually “fair and balanced”. Despite all the leftist arguments and bluster to the contrary, we, the great unwashed, actually have brains and can use them, and DO use them in making an intelligent, balnced, relatively spin-free news choice. I’ll take Fox News any day over any of the others.
That said, the Foley thing was stupid on their part. Maybe a brain cramp, maybe something more. But that was a graphic on-screen. In terms of falsehoods, your hero Dan “the man” Rather had my fave, the “false but accurate” forged documents.

  17. Murray Rennie,
Your link didn’t work but I found your allegation against FOX so totally inconsistent with what I witnessed while watching FOX that I looked up your sourrce. I found Fox coverage very even handed. It was critical and made no excuses for the behaviour of a Congressman that they consistently described as as Republican.
Based on your link it appears that what happened is that some clerk typing a caption inserted a D rather than an R. The clerk was probably a somewhat politically aware person who, naturally, assumed- that based on the behaviour described- the perp was a D rather than R.
Your insinuation that FOX purposely described Foley as a Democrat is grossly dishonest and, frankly puts you in the same league as the subject matter of this post.
If you are serious about examining the differences between Republicans and Democrats -and their media allies-I suggest you look at how Foley and the Republicans reacted to Foley being exposed for sending explicit emails to interns with how Studds and Democrats reacted to Studds being exposed for sodomizing an intern.
You are either uniformed or disingenuous.

  18. wow look at all the jealous haters. hey ‘been around the block’ let’s see what you’ve written? i mean youre such a good writer and all i’m sure someone besides your mother or your teacher must enjoy your work….
