Is It 1938 Again?

RealClearPolitics;

This inability of Europe to get its act together is what suggests 1938. Back then, Churchill was hardly the only one who thought Hitler was intent on war. After all, the German leader was an ideological zealot — and a murderer to boot. Still, England did little.

Similarly, you don’t have to have Churchillian prescience to see that what happened once in Lebanon can happen again. Hezbollah’s avowed aim is to eradicate Israel. Listen to what it says. Pay attention. It will renew its attacks the first chance it gets. This is why it exists.

  1. Iberia, you’ve made a comprehensive effort to answer your critics, but one glaring point – how about that troubling nuclear weapons thing?

  2. CBCpravda at it again.- in this mornings article they post the afgan version first.it not till far down in the article they mention the yanks were fired at. there is no end to pravdas crap.

  3. how you would differentiate between the Muslim terrorists and the Muslim non-terrorists.
Could it be the same way law enforcement would distinguish between the Swedish serial killer and the Swedish non-serial killer, serial killer being the operative word. (Insert bank robber, if it makes it easier for you)

  4. “Pavlov would be fascinated by the automatic brainless outrage that occurs when someone decides to use a swastika in any manner. I happen to like the form of the swastika”
My brainless outrage occurs when I think of my 19 year old uncle, for whom I am named, killed in WW2, or my mother’s high school grad class, in which 22 of 25 were killed in that same War. Or the numerous towns on the Prairies that died because their best young men were killed in that War.

    Amen to that.

  6. JJM:
I agree with your assessment of Nazi Germany; my point was simply that potential threat of Germany in 1938 was much greater than anything the Islamofascists can muster today.
    earl trossachs:
Nuclear weapons are troubling but don’t doubt for one second that the moment a nuke went off in the West, especially in the US or UK, their countries would be turned into a sheet of glass, and I’m sure the Islamists know this.

Yes, oh brilliant one, but how can you tell the difference (even in your example above) until the crime has been committed?

  7. Lavrenty Beria,
Your concern for the innocent people of the world would be far more believable if you hadn’t named yourself after Stalin’s executioner “…just because”.

  8. Kathyrn:
Can I help it if I have a black sense of humour? Besides, I’m not advocating death to millions or hatred towards any group, unlike some others here with less offensive handles.

  9. Black sense of humour? You’re an idiot. I give no time or credibility to someone as dispicable as you. You’re as bad or worse than a troll.

  10. Much as I think that Bob’s a fool, I really wish people would stop suggesting he be banned.
If we truly believe our ideas are better, we should welcome attempts to assail them; we will be better for having to defend them with clear, rational thought, as opposed to ad hominem attacks. Let the boobs wander in, so that we remain robust and rooted in the real world, instead of degenerating into a self-congratulatory circle of the close-minded.
So, Bob and beria, you are welcome in my world. It’s important for me to know just how entrenched the terrorist-loving mindset is in Canada. Keep up the miserable work!

The owner of a restaurant named after Adolf Hitler said Thursday he will change its name because it angered so many people.
Puneet Sablok said he would remove Hitler’s name and the Nazi swastika from billboards and the menu. He had said the restaurant’s name — ”Hitler’s Cross” — and symbols were only meant to attract attention.
Sablok made the decision after meeting with members of Bombay’s small Jewish community. …-

  12. but how can you tell the difference (even in your example above) until the crime has been committed?
You can’t, which is pretty much my point, isn’t it? Terrorists(serial killers) have a differentiating behavioral component from people that aren’t terrorists(serial killers).
I’m not advocating death to millions or hatred towards any group, unlike some others here with less offensive handles.
Either you are brain dead, have poor reading comprehension skills or just plain enjoy functioning as a lying nitwit, but, no one except you suggested the death of millions of innocent people. I stated “kill all Muslim terrorists”, just what part of that statement are you unable to get?

  13. “You can’t, which is pretty much my point, isn’t it? Terrorists(serial killers) have a differentiating behavioral component from people that aren’t terrorists(serial killers).”
You seem to be going in circles: first you say that you can’t tell the difference between a terrorist and a non-terrorist, then you say there is a “differentiating behavioral component”… which is what, penny? All Muslims with toothpaste in their carry on luggage?
What IS helping the terrorists is the fear-mongering by people like you.
    Warwick:
It’s ok, I forgive you. Looking forward to no more witty retorts from you.

  14. a black sense of humour
One death is a tragedy, one million is a statistic and 10 million is black humour. Who knew?

  15. **Lets Roll**
Interesting phrase and we all know what it means.
To be effective though it has to motivate enough people to do something to stave off a disater.
I do wish a majority of North Americans were more aware of the threat and were better motivated to throw their support behind our men and women in Iraq and Afgahnistan.
That *Lets Roll* awareness falls to the Canadian and US governments.
The MSM is providing confused messages at best. = TG

  16. Kathyrn:
It’s not the 10 million that’s humorous, it’s the reaction the name gets. Some of the people here and in previous posts call for violence against various ethnic/religious groups (not necessarily you), but you don’t speak out against that…you, and no doubt others, are more offended by the name of an odious historical figure. Darkly ironic, don’t you think?

  17. beria: ” Some of the people here and in previous posts call for violence against various ethnic/religious groups (not necessarily you), but you don’t speak out against that…
Um, do you live in the real world? Did you not see thousands of ‘citizens’ in Lebanon, Syria, Iran, etc. celebrating joyously in the streets after 9/11? Do you think the people who do the actual terror don’t have an enormous support group in these ‘citizens’? Don’t you think that these ‘citizens’ would awake tomorrow to find the US incinerated by a nuclear attack, and have them all thanking Allah?
The long road of history tells us that it is coming down to a fight. You might be as ignorant as Francis Fukuyama (of course, you might not..), and believe that the end of history has arrived. It has not. Just as the conflict between Communism and capitalism was decided, this conflict will be decided as well. We can hope it will be as bloodless as the victory over the Soviets, but they were, in the end, rational. I don’t hold any such assurance when dealing with the Islamofascists, and so my hope for a relatively peaceful end to this fight is virtually nil.

  18. first you say that you can’t tell the difference between a terrorist and a non-terrorist
    I said?
Iberia – sorry, sweetie, you’re dumber than a rock and doing troll games. Last response to you.
See ya. No need to reply.

  19. KevinB:
Yes, I live in the real world. One where I think it’s virtually impossible for any Middle East country to incinerate the US in a nuclear attack, even if they actually had such weapons.
Thousands of ‘citizens’ in Lebanon, Syria, Iran, etc. celebrating joyously in the streets after 9/11? So? Some Muslims celebrated, but certainly not all. You are making assumptions that there is wide spread support for the destruction of the West, based on a few images shown in the MSM (which right-wingers distrust so much) and on the actions of a few fanatics.
Moreover, imposing “freedom and democracy” in the ME is just not going over very well. Take note of what Cohen said:
“When George Bush used the term “Islamic fascists,” he had a point. But it’s futile to use colorful language when, in reality, you’re out of the conversation altogether. This is another baleful consequence of the Iraq War. The U.S. is not only preoccupied, it is loathed. The leadership it once was able to exert — especially in the Middle East — is a thing of the past.”
At least he got that part right.
So stop being hysterical and don’t forget – the world didn’t end because the US lost in Viet Nam, and it won’t end when they get kicked out of the ME.

  20. beria: “Thousands of ‘citizens’ in Lebanon, Syria, Iran, etc. celebrating joyously in the streets after 9/11? So? Some Muslims celebrated, but certainly not all. ”
Er, how do you know what percentage celebrated? I saw TV shots from many different cities with huge crowds. “Thousands” is not an understatement. Please tell us why you are certain that Muslims not shown on TV were at home deploring the 9/11 attacks.
Have you not been reading the coverage from Lebanon? For every admitted Hezbollah fighter, there are many Lebanese who fervently avow their support for Hezbollah. This hatred of Jews, the West, and any non-Muslim is not going to stop.
I wish these people were rational; they are not. The only ways to deal with the non-rational is to either contain or eliminate them. I’m all for containment as a first choice – it’s what eventually defeated communism – but if they want to be more aggressive, elimination is the only option left.
