Reader Tips

I’ve got a busy afternoon ahead, so you can entertain each other on this thread by directing readers to your own posts, or other items of interest.
An item at Debka;

All the world powers assembled in St. Petersburg for the G-8 summit agreed that Hizballah started the war as Tehran’s proxy terrorist arm. They picked up on the attitude of the US president, who is telling Israel: Let it run; but keep civilian casualties down and don’t kick too much Lebanese infrastructure.
Even Arab governments, which automatically fought any Israeli military action in the past, have formed a solid Sunni Muslim front, led by Saudi Arabia, which is content to watch the Shite Hizballah take a beating and the burgeoning Shiite assertiveness in the region squashed.
The Olmert government is eagerly exploiting this leisurely international climate to smash as much of Hizballah’s terror machine as he can before Washington holds up a stop sign. Monday, July 17, a clutch of would-be ceasefire brokers descended on Beirut and Jerusalem. None came with Bush’s nod, so they will not get very far.

  1. I apologize if someone else has mentioned this and I’m being repetitive, but this crap about ‘Lebanese prisoners’ needs to include, (at least), one such individual that Hezbollah are ‘demanding’ be released:
Samir Quntar, (also spelt Kuntar), a Lebanese terrorist who entered Israel and, among other things, shot a 4 year old girl’s father in front of her, so that “It would be the last thing she ever saw”, and then smashed the child’s head against a rock with a rifle butt.
Quntar is considered by the Palestinians, and the Palestinian media, a ‘HERO’, and a ‘noble warrior’, and was awarded ‘honorary’, (there’s a laugh), Palestinian ‘citizenship’.

A man is dead and two people are injured after a shooting early yesterday at a downtown nightclub.
Toronto Police say shots rang out on the rooftop patio of Volume nightclub at 318 Richmond St. W., east of Spadina Ave., just after 2 a.m. yesterday.
Officers arrived at the hip-hop club in the city’s Entertainment District shortly after and found three victims — a man in his 20s, who was pronounced dead at the scene, and two others — a man and a woman — who were taken to St. Michael’s Hospital with non-life-threatening wounds.
No names were released and detectives probing the city’s 41st homicide of the year weren’t available for comment. …-

I’ve never read, nor heard a TV reporter say, “Shots Pffft’d out”.

Tongsun Park was a key player in the Koreagate scam. Park plea bargained his way to immunity by ratting on his fellow criminals.

    U.N. Drama Unfolds,
    Times Runs Wire Copy
    By: Niall Stanage
    Date: 7/24/2006
The story had everything: secret agents, political intrigue, personal betrayal and cash. Lots and lots of cash.
Yet, for all that, a remarkable trial that ended last week in a Manhattan courtroom—a proceeding that implicated figures in the highest echelons of international politics—was barely mentioned in the major American press. If it weren’t for the journalistic wing of the conservative movement, outlets like the National Review Online and The New York Sun, it might not have been covered at all.
Take the events of last Thursday, for example. After two weeks of testimony, a jury took only a few hours to convict a South Korean national, Tongsun Park, of acting as an unregistered agent of Saddam Hussein’s Iraq. The conspiracy of which he was a part ran for 10 years, ending in late 2002, and helped one of the world’s worst regimes maintain its grip on power.
But The New York Times did not assign a reporter to his trial, its total coverage amounting to a brief wire report on the day following Mr. Park’s conviction. Of the other major national dailies, The Washington Post ran a single news-brief item, the Los Angeles Times not a word. (more)
Maurice Strong was current Secretary General Kofi Annan’s special envoy to North Korea until the oil-for-food scandal began to lap around his feet last year.
Fresh details about a check for almost $1 million that Mr. Strong was given by Mr. Park emerged at the trial. The court also heard evidence that Mr. Park covered Mr. Strong’s private office expenses for several years.
Mr. Strong, like Mr. Boutros-Ghali, denies any wrongdoing. But, at the least, it is odd that people at the very highest level of the U.N. enjoyed such a close relationship with Mr. Park.
(Three decades prior to his current travails, Mr. Park was caught up in the so-called Koreagate scandal, accused of trying to buy support for South Korea in Congress and eventually testifying in exchange for immunity.)
During the course of the legal proceedings, these puzzling transactions have been laid bare—for anyone interested enough to write about them. …- more at:

NAIROBI, Kenya – Ethiopia is prepared to invade neighboring Somalia to defend its U.N.-backed government against what appeared to be an imminent attack by Islamic militiamen, a government spokesman said Wednesday. The militiamen, who hold most of southern Somalia, deployed hundreds of fighters outside the town where the largely powerless government is based and said they planned to seize it. “We have the responsibility to defend the border and the Somali government. We will crush them,” Ethiopia’s Minister of Information, Berhan Hailu, told The Associated Press. …-

The Oil for Food scandal yields its first conviction.
    BY CLAUDIA ROSETT
    Thursday, July 20, 2006 12:01 a.m. EDT
By the end of 1996, the Oil for Food program had begun and the first oil officially exempted from sanctions was flowing from Iraq. But Mr. Boutros-Ghali was on his way out, about to lose his job to Kofi Annan. Baghdad sent word that there would be no more payments to the conspirators. (Mr. Boutros-Ghali has not been accused of wrongdoing and denies receiving any money from Iraq.)
Mr. Park’s connection with the U.N., and to Iraq, however, did not end there. He also had ties to a longtime U.N. eminence, a Canadian named Maurice Strong–who served from 1997 to 2005 as one of Mr. Annan’s most influential advisers and envoys, holding the U.N.’s third-highest rank, undersecretary general.
While best known as the godfather of the 1997 Kyoto treaty, U.N. records show that Mr. Strong was also the chief architect of Mr. Annan’s 1997 U.N. reforms, including the consolidation of the Oil for Food program into one office, reporting to Mr. Annan and headed by longtime U.N. staffer Benon Sevan. (Mr. Sevan was alleged last year by the U.N.’s own probe to have taken $147,000 in payoffs on Oil for Food deals. From Cyprus, beyond reach of U.S. extradition, Mr. Sevan has denied any wrongdoing.)
The trial evidence showed that in that same year–1997–Mr. Park visited Jordan, next door to Iraq, and returned to New York with a check for $988,885 made out to “Mr. M. Strong.” It was funded by a lump sum of cash deposited into a Jordanian bank account by an Iraqi passport holder. There followed a complex deal involving Mr. Park’s purchase of shares in a Strong family oil company which soon after went bankrupt. But if anyone came out almost $1 million ahead, it was Mr. Strong. (Mr. Strong, whose Canadian office says he is in Beijing, has denied any knowledge of the source of the funds, has not been accused of any crime, and has refused to comment until after Mr. Park’s sentencing.)
Nevertheless, Mr. Park’s loss did not sour the relationship. In 2000, and “probably” for some years after that, Mr. Park paid the rent for a private office that Mr. Strong kept in midtown Manhattan, according to the trial testimony of Washington businessman C. Wyatt Dickerson. During that time, Mr. Strong was still on U.N. contract as a special adviser to Mr. Annan. And when Mr. Strong became Mr. Annan’s personal envoy to North Korea from 2003 to 2005, he turned, as he later acknowledged, to Mr. Park–born in what is now North Korea–for advice. …-

Force of nature parts the Red Sea (Geologists believe they are witnessing the creation of an ocean)

THE Red Sea is parting in a way that could create a new ocean basin and redraw the map of Africa and Arabia. A huge rift that appeared last year along a fault in the Afar desert in Ethiopia, where the African and Arabian tectonic plates meet, has provided the strongest indication yet of how the plates are separating to create a new sea. Geologists believe that they are witnessing a tectonic process similar to the one that formed the Atlantic Ocean, as adjacent plates push apart over millions of years to alter the shape of the continents. While the…

  14. ** We can only hope. But if you’re tired of feeling helpless on the sidelines **
You can learn about the several EVs [Electric Vehicles] that are waiting to be discovered and help Canada and the USA public wake up and pressure the government to sidestep Big Oil and Big Auto lobbies and stop hindering the marketing of EVs.
Electric Vehicles cost a penny a mile to operate, are emissions free and are so simple with so few moving parts that aside from brakes, require no service at all.
    Check the links from:
    -ttp://TonyGuitar.blogspot.com
And ask yourself why GM recalled 800 EV1s from lease and secretly crushed them in their secure Arizona compound.
    Documented by helicopter.
EVs will devastate Big Auto profits in both services and parts sales. They will eventually sell for prices more in line with electrical appliances, because that is what they will become.
EVs will reduce world dependence on IRAN*S oil by 90%.
That means Iran will not have the means to buy sophisticated weapons nor properly support Hezbollah.
Devious eh? But now you, and all who drive cars, can switch to EVs, save $300 – $400 a month in gas money and knock the wind out of the mullahusks who hold Iran in their iron fisted grip. Cut world dependency by 90%.
You may not believe how far EVs have come, due mostly to new Battery technology.
    240HP, 0 – 60 in 4 seconds, range 250 miles per charge = $2.50.. thus, 1 penny per mile and getting better. = TG
