Don showed a “Support our Troops” ballcap on his show and an e-mail address to order them. I didn’t write it down, do you have it or can you find it? Maybe put it on your site?

I caught the game tonight and was more than extatic with the outcome. Let’s hope the Oil go all the way. I know who I will cheer for. Down south in the gulf we don’t like hurricanes of any sort 😉

Little David was in his 5th grade class when the teacher asked the students what their father did for a living. All the typical answers came up, doctor, policeman, fireman, salesman, etc. David was being uncharacteristically quiet and so his teacher asked him about his father.
“My Father’s an exotic dancer in a gay bar and takes off his clothes in front of other men. Sometimes, if the offer’s really good, he’ll go out to the alley with some guy and do things that mommy says are unnatural.”
The teacher, obviously shaken by this statement, hurriedly set the other children to work on some coloring, and took Little David aside to ask him, “Is that really true about your father?”
“No,” said David, “he plays for the Calgary Flames but I was to embarrassed to say that in front of the other kids.”

It was nice to see Prime Minister Stephen Harper in the crowd and finding time for an interview on a subject, other than politics, that he is passionate about! How can you go wrong showing up at the last home game of the Canadian Stanley Cup fianalist if you are the Prime Minister of Canada! I was wishing that the whole of the elected body of MP’s would have been there in person to experience the national anthem sung with passion, zeal and sincerity.
Of all the things that could help to bring this country together, it could be the simple things like a hockey game that may prove to be the most important “glue” to bind this great nation together as one.

Hey, I’m not even a hockey fan (‘long line of matriarchs and all-girl families), but what a game last night! I kept popping into the action, ’cause my husband was glued to the tube.
About Don Cherry: Who wears those kinds of abominations, er, shirts with the high collars, other than Tom Wolfe, and those excruciatingly tasteless jackets: NO ONE!! But you can’t help loving his telling it like it is and his support of our troops in Afghanistan.
He’s also established Rose Cherry’s Home for Kids, a paediatric hospice for dying children. Its Mission Statement says that it “…provides paediatric hospice care and respite services to families within communities in Ontario, who have children with life-limiting or life-threatening illness requiring complex and/or technology-dependent care.” He devotes a geat deal of his time, treasure, and talent to this charity.
You really can’t judge this guy by his truly dreadful taste in clothes!!
Go Oilers…the cup belongs in Canada…not Mayberry RFD where Floyd and Goober will spill moon pies on it.

Partisan hockey aside..i really can’t see that CBC’s attempt to make the oilers Canadas team is working here in T.O. (or elsewhere..)
I wouldn’t mind seeing the ‘Canes win the cup.They have worked just as hard, and are the fans (goobers, as was so eloquently stated..) really any less worthy than Oiler fans who are described in Carolinas media as “drunken sons of farmers ” who were nowhere to be found until the bandwagon pulled into town?

Ah, poor jaded Leafs fans — success is such an alien concept to you (despite CBC telling you all season how good you are) that you can’t even wish it on other Canadian teams.
I’m a Habs fan, and I jumped on the Oilers bandwagon after watching their incredible third-period game 6 performance against Detroit. The Hurricanes are still owed a big piece of karmic payback for damn near blinding Saku Koivu in the first round, and having to watch the Oilers hoist the Cup in their home rink would fit the bill!

d’ya think if the Leafs ever made it to a final(praise allah..)you would be jumping off that bandwagon to support them?..don’t think so..
i am not a big believer in allegiance switching,and really,outside of Edmonton this year,can you honestly say there is real passion and excitement after the lock out year for this final?
Game 7 certainly has “East vs West” bias even in Canada. I remember in the not-so-long-ago pre-lockout past that small market Canadian teams were the ones in danger of folding up (and not some Carolina goalie). In Calgary the year before the lockout we had to sell 12,000 season tickets by July or the team was outta here. The news from Edmonton sounded like their team was even more shakier than ours.
This is the first championship series post lockout. There are many Canadians (eastern and here in Calgary) that can’t bring themselves to cheer for the small market Canadian survivor that has advanced themselves against all odds to play one last game for the cup. But they should try a little harder to remember how close we came to adding another three Winnipeg/Quebec cities to Canada’s game. Maybe that will bring a smidge more cheer towards a Canadian team in the final game of the final series.
It’s not like a person has to have a large tatoo of the Stanley Cup tattooed on their back with Edmonton’s name on it to have a good reason to cheer for the Oilers…the Canadian team part works good enough for me.

As for the cup belonging in Canada – what attitude could be more provincial than that? It’s like the CBC covering the finals 80% from the Edmonton perspective. At least on NBC, both teams are treated equally. Besides, there are as many Canadian players on Carolina as there are on Edmonton. And, as pointed out by kursk, I don’t think there would be this national ownership of a team if it were Toronto or Montreal or even Ottawa. I don’t recall a big national rally around the Habs in 1993.
One other thing: Why are Edmonton and Calgary “small market” teams with the booming economy? There should be enough revenue there to support the New York Yankees.
Drago, you really should see a doctor about that Alzheimers of yours, it’s getting bad. The “small market” NHL teams were perpetual money losers in an astronomically high salary environment that were often being outbid for hockey talent by “big market” teams like Detroit and Dallas. Lack of talent meant lack of competitiveness leading to….get the point? You want to pay $100 to take your grandkids (plus $20 for popcorn) to see the team lose?

How anyone can keep off the “bandwagon” is beyond me!
This is a team that struggled to make the eighth seed in a very competitive division and only succeeded by aquiring a goaltender that was just short of a mircle worker.
To lose that player, be down 3 games and regroup as a team to advance to a game seven final is a feat any athlete and fan should be proud of.
C’mon eastern Canada, put your bias behind you and root for a team that has show true “grit” (pun intended) and character ’cause they’re trying to bring our most coveted sports award home!
Lord Stanley’s Cup belongs in Canada. Western Canada knows it, Edmonton players and fans know it and true Canadian fans like Don Cherry and PM Stephan Harper know it!
There is still room on this “bandwagon” so hop on, enjoy the ride and celebrate this uniquely Canadian experience with us!

I’m firmly off the bandwagon. I was born and raised in Calgary, and I will NOT cheer for the Oilers. It’s just…unnatural.
Whilst being forced to watch the Oilers slick the Hurricanes last night on a sub par CBC broadcast, I heard the paly by play guy and the colour commentator (sorry, their names escape me. Just picture two over-the-hill, slightly senile old men) commenting about the excellent Steven Harper interview between periods. They were saying that he is a huge hockey fan who is very knowledgeable about hockey in Canada and writing a book about it. One of them then said PM Harper could be a professional scout. The other one then said that when he loses the next election, he’ll have lots of time for that (or something to that effect). I was dumbfounded. Another CBC moment.
I heard that comment from Harry Neale as well. I don’t claim to speak for Neale, but my conjecture is that when he said, “When he loses the next election”, he meant “the next time he loses an election.”
I was speachless as well. I heard heard the announcer say “when he looses the next election they could hire him for a scout. This is a just a sportscaster, I waws so pissed off. PMSH could go one on one either of these over paid old fools in a hockey debate and they would loose. No wondered PM avoids the media. Even the sports guys are biased. I hope that there is action taken after this. The Prime Minister was so eloquent during his interview, this man should be ashamed of him self. I too, did not get his name. It was when they were showing the players coming back on the ice, so you didn’t see the faces. I will never forget his voice though. Axe the CBC!
If game six oilers show up its no contest. Another dynasty? They’ve got all the ingredients. When a team melds together like that its a thing of beauty. It what makes team sport so special.
A dynasty? Heh, first they ride Rolly through the first few rounds, then they find a way to win and tie the series and people start the dynasty talk… They made the playoffs in 8th place for god’s sake. I have a visceral hate for Edmonton from all the years of the Jets losing in round 1 and 2. I would rather throw up in my mouth and swallow it back down then cheer for them.
May the best team win Monday, and please let that be Carolina.
Also, boycott CBC and watch NBC, much better coverage. Emerick and Davidson just blow Cole and Neale out of the water. I love Don Cherry, but he is getting odder as the years pile up on him. Poor Don McLean.
I’ve heard enough of the Oilers… they have had their share… time for a new cup winner. Keep it east! Go ‘Canes!!!!
