Belindarella: “The Slipper Doesn’t Fit”

Joan Tintor on yesterday’s blond bombshell;

She had a good chance to win, Stronach claimed, but her reason for not running is the partys leadership selection process, which she says renders her incapable of speaking her mind on party renewal. She maintains that she would have been trapped in a system in which the grassroots are ahead of the party.
This is risible nonsense. In the two months that have passed since Paul Martin announced he would not be leading the Liberals into another election, this is the first inkling we have ever heard from Belinda that she had a problem with the Liberal partys leadership process.
[…]
As CBC reporter Julie Van Dusen noted on Newsworld today, Stronach applauded the Liberal leadership rules when they were released last month. As the National Post reported on March 20:

I was particularly pleased to see the national party executive agree on rules that will ensure the leadership race is a more open, accessible and accountable process from start to finish, that will guarantee a level playing field for everyone who decides to run, Ms. Stronach said in a statement.

Stronach’s talking points today, less than three weeks later, are a transparent rationalization for the fact that her weak support among traditional Liberals means she could only win the leadership if she were free to essentially take over the party with new members. Yet Scott Brison, Michael Ignatieff and Bob Rae do not seem deterred, though they are essentially starting from the same place.
In the Simpsons episode that features the musical version of A Streetcar Named Desire, the closing song includes the line a strangers just a friend you havent met. I guess to Stronach, a grassroots Liberal is just somebody whose membership she hasnt bought yet.

Stephen Taylor weighs in as well.

  1. With all due respect, Chris, what does this have to do with Belinda–besides sheer opportunism, e.g., politicians and paedophiles?

  2. Stick chick does not have a self to be true to. She’s a product of her father’s machinations, as well as a puppet of Liberals like David Peterson and others who orchestrated her floor-crossing. You give her far to much credit to suggest that there is any depth to plunder in that vassel of Liberal slime.

  3. lookout, damnit, it doesn’t have to do anything with Belinda.
It’s follow-up to a post Small Dead Animals had earlier and its breaking news.
It’s also the “most important priority of the City of Edmonton” right now and is important from both a news point of view and from a human one.
The little girl in question screamed when she saw the man again.
I posted my comment here so people would actually see it and I also placed it under the original post.

  4. “Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want, and deserve to get it good and hard.” – HL Mencken
    Welcome to democracy Belinda

  5. OK, Chris. I acknowledged the importance of the information you provided. What I questioned is the location of the post. I believe I did so politely. Perhaps you might have returned the courtesy.
(If the person apprehended is the guilty party, I hope that justice is served. Here. In Canada. I don’t hold my breath.)

  6. The word “damnit” wasn’t a personal attack although it was expressing frustration with your criticism.
This was the perfect place to post it since this was the website where the issue was brought to my attention.
I know it’s a story Kate and many of her her readers follow.

  7. I find her easy on the eyes, and the posibility of a good second income.
The reason she quit is not some high faluting principled pose. She has no principles. What happened is quite simple. She made some calls, asked for support, insinuated financial incentives, and got nothing. Poor little rich girl found herself in the midst of a anything but B.S. campaign. (Can you fancy the call to Quebec delegates: “En francais, sil vous plais.” Click.)
The problem I have with these types is not that they come to power, not that their aspirations far outway their ability. What I find most galling is how easy it they make it seem. Throw a little money around, hire some puppetmasters and Bob’s your uncle.
Good bye B. You’ll be a great second income somewhere.

  8. GL1800: agreed, she will bow out of politics soon. She never wanted to be an MP; she only wanted to be a leader of a party. Didn’t matter which one. Thought she had it easy with the Cons, but Harper slayed her without even trying. Thought there was an opening with the Libs, but the power brokers have slapped her down because they want Iggy, and because they may be misguided leftists but they’re not stupid. Now she is out in the media burning all her bridges with the Liberal Party, pathetically grabbing for any last little bit of attention she can attract. She will be asked to leave soon, if she hasn’t been asked already. You don’t cross the Libranos and get away with it.
It just goes to show you: you are what you are, and hubris is hubris, no matter how much money you have.

  9. Not just for lookout only….:-)
The suspect caught at the Edmonton school today was the object of a news bulletin this a.m……a hairstylist at a beauty salon reported that a man wearing a toque came into the salon and wanted to get his hair dyed, but he didn’t want to take his hat off…..then he did, and the hair stylist saw the orange/yellow streaks. By the time she called 911, he was gone.
This is far more important news than the BS that BS creates…..however….now my two cents on Michael Ignatieff.
If there is an eternal fountain of arrogance, it’s in that man. He puts his hands together in a prayer position in front of his mouth to show just how deeply he is considering his words, knowing that the dumb people he is addressing are waiting for his exalted wisdom….pfft…..that man needs to get some beef on his bones.
He said today something about “I want my Canada to…..”
I thought in reply “I want my Prime Minister to have lived in Canada, not observe it from outside”
BS’s platform could have consisted of “Don’t you know who I am????”….now that she’s dropping out….hopefully of politics forever….she can go on a soul-searching mission and we won’t see her for months (hopefully years)….then she can come back and go on a tour across Canada launching her new book….titled….”What I learned from making an ass out of myself in politics”

  10. I encourage all Libs to scratch in the name Belinda (for those of you that aren’t going to write in “Paul”) on your ballots – you know that the best the Libs can do.

  11. I dont know if I have mentioned it but there is only one party left for IBIR (I’m belinda I’ll run). She will have to join Jack at the end dp. Can you imadine the combination, The Leftist and the “I’ll take whats leftist”.

  12. ronrob,
As far as I know – no one ever crossed the floor to go NDP federally … just to hard to get into the trough unless your the leader … ask Sven – he had to take his own actions … he might have to go provincial (were stealing is legal).

  13. I’m missing Andrew Coyne…any one know why his comments are shut down again?
The CPC has added the Tamil Tigers to its list of terrorist groups after years of Liberal foot dragging. I guess it helped the Liberals politically to willfully ignore its complicity in terrorist activities abroad. See http://habamusrodentum.blogspot.com/

  14. I think his comments are shut down because he’s not posting right now, HR, and 1952+ comments would tend to crash the system.
What he’s doing and what his plans are are the questions.
I’m a bit surprised, because he went out of his way to have a guest blogger while he was away on vacation, then he came back, there was a clear “transition of power”… and then Andrew stopped posting again.
I hope he’s just working on something and that he’s okay.

  15. Belinda Stronach has dropped out of the liberal leadership race? What a damned shame! This Party, and this Country needs high caliber candidates like BS, Hedy Fry, Scott Brisson, Ashley McIsaac.
Remember, every BS type that drops out of the race increases the chance of someone electable leading the Libs. So, I say, come back little Belinda, we need you! It was all a mistake, we love you! If you can’t learn French, Pig Latin will do, just come back and run! Eez-play!
Meanwhile YAY, Ashley, Scotty, Hedy, Homer, etc!!!

  16. Not counting elected libs, defeated libs, senators and some others who can vote, each riding can send 14 elected delegates. That means 392 Albertans can go. Who pays for attending the convention. The libs are broke,so it will be each on your own. Was Belinda planning on covering all these expenses for Que delegates and others. Only the wealthy need apply. Why do they need to sell all those memberships in AB if only 392 can go. These delegates are only bound on the first vote, and how can anyone know if that is who one votes for. Ashley all the way.

  17. No to Ashley, YES to Ken Dryden who has more integrity in one of his Sunday morning dumps than does Chubbs McHarper. With Dryden on the ticket (giving people a real choice) Alliance support will only be in isolated spots where people only think about themselves and vote on 1 issue.

  18. Back to Coach HAT, eh?
I guess your only tactic for dissing PMSH is to comment on the size of his girth. I could say any number of nasty things about Ken Dryden (he’s no Twiggy), about the beautiful Belinda (which means, BTW, “beautiful snake”), and some of the other Libs, but they’d be ad hominem–and that’s a no-no when it comes to genuine debate.
So Coach Hat, Coach, whoever you are, bring your debating skills up a few notches and enter the world of the grown ups.

  19. I’m actually disappointed that Belinda has decided not to run – with all the serious issues surrounding us, we need a little comic relief, and BS never fails to deliver. She is living proof that one can have too much self-esteem.
As for why she got as much attention as she did: a lot of that is due to the fact that she is a woman. Every time someone questioned her qualifications, the cries of “sexism” were heard far and wide. If Frank Stronach’s only child had been male, would the press have been as reluctant to criticize? In retrospect, it’s unfortunate the media focussed on her appearance rather than on her “qualifications” i.e. han on the facts that she’s dropped out of college after a few months, worked only for her dad’s company without anybody remembering any real contribution she made to it, and decided to run for high political office without any political experience whatsoever. If they had, her fame wouldn’t have lasted five minutes.

  20. Coach Hat:
Nice warm & cuddly imagery happening with the Dryden dump idea. As for giving people “real choice”, ol’ Ken’s noggin might have taken one slapshot too many for intimating that parents who care for their own kids aren’t in the same league as those who’d use state-run daycare.
Real choice, indeed. Integrity? Oh yeah.
As for mentioning the “Alliance”, you might wish to check your calendar, dude. It needed flipping about three years ago.
But you’re welcome to join the rest of us in happy, carefree 2006 whenever you’re ready.
