I personal thought is was all over and done with. The other item I don’t seem to recall are the protestors calling for the Prime Minister to bring home the troops from Afganistan. It seems now that we have a Conservative Prime Minister that everything is wrong with Canada.

    First you need a set of ideals, and then a reasonable way to implement them bit by bit.
    My father grew up in Nazi Germany learning how to despise certain races. He by turns wound up in the Kingdom of Lesotho, which is surrounded by South Africa. He spent the last ten years of his career as a civil engineer working on the Lesotho Highlands Water Project which when finished is a $10 billion dollar deal. The Kingdom of Lesotho sells power to South Africa and evirons for goods and services. This project also provides fresh water to the local population.
    Who says God doesn’t have a sense of humour; when the little boy who was taught to hate the “inferior races” and to kill and blow stuff up, winds up building and helping the very same at the end of his career? Balance, you just have to find it.

Furthermore, wealthy nations have been breaking some of their own promises for decades (e.g. implementing fair trade rules, committing .7% of their GDP to aid, etc.). We should take those failures into account as well, and not throw everything onto NGOs and the UN.

  46. Well on the whole Africa question, it is obvious that there is a bunch corrupt bullshit that has happened over the last number of decades.
    Civil war in Lesotho didn’t stop them from building a dam. Hell my father had howitzer shells flying over his house, but he didn’t pack up and leave. Except of course when the armoured columns came packing a bit of heat; but that was only for five days.
    When I emailed back then, he suggested it was just like WWII, so it wasn’t too distressing for him. I suggested perhaps they weren’t paying him enough and he should have had a danger pay clause in his contract.
    His neighbour got whacked by a bunch of thugs who drove up one afternoon and pumped him full of bullets. Apparently, his neighbour didn’t support the right political party.
    In short, shit will inevitably happen; but invariably hope floats. When bad stuff happens in your life, do you pack up your marbles and leave?
    But then we’ve had enough idiots trying to put us in the graveyard for the last five generations; so perhaps we spot them a little quicker.

    Someone up the thread said the African despots just want the western cheques – and you’re right. Foreign aid handed directly from gov’t to gov’t generally tends to end up in a Swiss bank account (or a good portion of it). NGOs like World Vision and Foster Parents go directly to the people needing help, which is why the CPC policies I’ve seen focus MORE on NGOs than useless black holes like the CIDC.

    Apparently, sealing is a $17 million industry in Newfoundland that involves anywhere from 2500 to 4000 sealers seasonally.

    According to a BBC article, Sir Paul McCartney is worth about $1.4 billion.

    Instead of photo ops of himself and his dotty anti-dairy wife on the ice flows, why not simply PAY the sealers NOT to hunt out of his own pocket?
