E-Day

Michelle Malkin is doing a nice job of sending her sizable audience to get the latest in Canadian election coverage.
Poll closing times have been staggered to minimize the lag time between east and west coast results, however, if you’re looking for an advance peek at regional returns, I’m told Captains Quarters will be liveblogging.
I currently don’t have plans to be online – I’m planning on a night out with a few friends in front of a big screen tv with a beer in my hand. But if I can get a hookup for my laptop, I may get a post or update in.
The comments thread will also be open. See above – I won’t be here to police things, so behave yourselves, and don’t feed the inevitable trolls.

650 CKOM will be posting results on their website as soon as Sask polls close. The little map should update automatically as the night goes on.

A final note – I am making no predictions whatsoever. I don’t know that it’s really possible for any pollster to predict how votes may split, or the effect of a dismal campaign on a disappointed Liberal base. I’m content to just wait and see, and keep my fingers crossed for my own CPC candidate, Carol Skelton.

One final reminder to those who will be watching live – early returns tend to favour urban results. In ridings with urban/rural splits, the rural (conservative leaning) polls tend to come in a little later and in many cases, early leads by the left are overtaken. The trend isn’t as strong as it was some years ago, due to better communcations, but it still exists.

Send your trackbacks, and comments, but I do advise Canadian bloggers not to overtly break the ban on posting results directly.
Also – judging by the google generated traffic, there’s a chance the server’s going to get slammed by this evening. Try to do your part by taking it easy on the reloads when reading comments.
And while we wait, a thoughtful piece by Pieter Dorsman on the future of the left in Canada.
Update: Kate Foxworthy moment: When you’re working as a scrutineer at a polling station and some guy rides up in a sled and votes in a full face helmet and gear – and everyone knows who he is – you might be in Saskatchewan.

  1. I’m in AB, and I’m listening to the NF/NS results on RCI (I’m an American, so Elections Canada can bring it on!!!).
thesurlybeaver.ca (Canuck in London) is liveblogging – but don’t go there if you can’t handle it!!! Remember, Elections Canada is there to protect you!

  2. Whoops, I think we were just rumbled, the RCI feed just got cut off, either that or they’re overloaded.
    Londoner

  3. Ditto that, Shaken, RCI pulled the plug on us – guess they feel we can’t handle the truth.
I mean, God forbid you Canadians knowing what is going on in your country. Like people in BC are going to stampede the polling place in the last 2 hrs because of the result in Nova Scotia. OR stay home. Puh. You still have to have your local representative . . . your vote still “counts”.

  4. CTV’s reporting that you can get the election results for your local area on your cell phone. All you need to do is call some number – anyone remember how to spoof call display phone numbers? 😉

  5. Radio Canada french and *chinese* feeds also cut off.
WTF? We’re paying for Chinese translation? What is this, our third official language?

  6. thesurlybeaver.ca is reporting that the RCI live feed is still there intermittently but it seems to be a volume problem… keep trying folks

  7. The RCI has a live feed I am picking up in Brazil….all the results from the Maritimes are coming in…I am not Canadian and live in Brazil…is there a problem with me posting results here?

  8. These must be NS results:
    LIB 18
    CPC 11
    NDP 2
Still to hear from 1 riding….there will be a few small changes from this.

  9. I hope not Ben because I just did the same thing and I am Canadian!! In London though, so they can’t catch me. Besides, someone on another web site pointed out that the internet does not “transmit” per se, it just sits there and other people access it. But if anyone thinks we should stop let me know – don’t want to get Kate in trouble.

  10. In Labrador and Newfoundland the Conservatives picked up one seat so maybe that is the total you gave..there it was 4 to 3 Lib-Con

  11. Anyone know who has the best live stream election coverage? Please post recommendations and links.
    Mercy Buckets.
    🙂

  12. Since finding SDA, and then Dust My Broom, I feel like I have some friends in Canada. So I’m one of those clueless Americans who’s interested in the Elections “Up North”!
Good luck to all of you! I wish you the best government you can get!
    “Eh?”
    Hehehee!

  13. Is anyone else concerned that the Conservative election strategy was helped by Americans? I still would have voted for us, but I think its pretty stupid we get outside help when the enemy accuses us of sleeping with them.

  14. The Surly Beaver is doing a great job. Better than I have been able to do.
Keep visiting all of us, including Capt. Ed, Michelle, Beaver, and myself.
    Thank you. 🙂

  15. I have always enjoyed voting because of the strange characters it brings out of the woodwork.
You have crazy environmentalist, who can’t afford a haircut or razor (or wont get one even if he/she has the money). That’s my favorite crazy because they are mostly limited in scope to places they can walk, or bike ride. Sometimes they will dust off the old hippie style van that pollutes more then todays modern SUV, and venture out to protest trivial issues like deforestation, and the greenhouse effect. Most of the time these are people who are dissatisfied with their career so they try to put blame on large corporations that have denied them the promotion they so badly deserve all these years.
Then you have rich housewife, who feels it is her civic duty to vote, and looks in disgust at all the common people who have shown up at her place to vote. Usually she votes because she feels it is in her financial interest to do so. I hate this type the most, because they are the most difficult to put in their place. The typical upscale housewife spends very little time in the kitchen because they have an illegal Mexican to do all their chores (usually named Rosa or Maria). They dont understand the value of a womens place. This type of person will also head fundraisers for causes that get ohs, and ahs from people like save the whales, or feed the starving children of Africa.
Then there is your average joe or jane, who has a genuine interest in politics for the country as a whole, and isnt in it for personal or financial gain. I really hate this type of person also because they are not the least bit selfish, and care about the welfare of others.

  16. If the Conservatives don’t get a majority, don’t be suprised to see the Liebrals still in govmt in the morning because the GG has the final say.

  17. Does anyone know which site is best for up-to-date coverage on the election?
I would like to see something similar to the above map of Saskatchewan, but for the entire Country??
    Go Harper!

  18. Yeah, Captain’s Quarters is down 7:15 MST…
Wouldn’t be surprized if his site server is overloaded, or Elections Canada is threatening ISP’s with a law suit…
    cheers
    tom

  19. http://www.thesurlybeaver.ca/ seems to be down. Bandwidth overloaded, perhaps?
I hope my site won’t be next. People have been posting some numbers there, but there doesn’t seem to be much point in not just waiting for the official coverage to begin in forty minutes.

  20. Isn’t it grand living in a country where information about your own elections is illegal.
As if knowing what’s happening in other parts of the country is going to make the lest bit of difference.
This is truly a banana country

  21. I was concerned that Sasktel was censoring Captain’s Quarter’s Blog, and others, but it seems that no one can access it.
I posted the Coral Cache link to it CQB on my blog, but I don’t know how often the cache is updated. I think Surly Beaver is doing a great service for Canadians.
