What? Me Liberal?

A friend called from Kitchener yesterday to pass along news that their Liberal encumbent Karen Redman has dropped all mention of the Liberal party in her radio advertising.
Stephen Taylor has evidence of the same thing happening in other ridings.
In Saskatoon-Wanaskeywin, it’s the other way round – Liberal candidate Chris Axworthy is distancing himself from his own campaign workers.

Mr. Axworthy concedes the call came from his office, but he believes someone not connected to his campaign sneaked in and made the call.

That’s so going to work now that local news radio has started playing audio of the call.
No confirmation of the rumour that the party will be unveiling new blue election signs for the weekend, but I’m working on it…
(Though they have begun to “Stand Up For Canada”)

  1. I know our (ahem, cough cough) esteemed Agriculture Minister Andy Mitchell has been doing a great deal of distancing here in Parry Sound/Muskoka. He hasn’t totally excised the party from his print material, but he apparently has with radio.
Does anyone else find it entertaining that the Agriculture Minister comes from a riding that’s all rocks and lakes? The only thing that grows here is granite.

  2. Local Peterborough candidate has ex-MP Liberal Peter Adams speaking on radio ads on her behalf. Absolutely no mention of Paul Martin or Liberal Party.
When Liberal candidates run as Independants, why on earth would any voter support the Liberal brand? The captains have abandoned the ship, and us rats are expected to just nod, nod, wink, wink? Vote for the “hidden” agenda!
If you are ashamed of the party, run as an Independant and say so, or has “let’s pretend” become part of the Candian Values? But by denying your principles, be it liberal or otherwise, you are taking a principled stand? I support you even though you are ashamed to admit your allegance.
Suggestion to make a small change in the taxpayer subsidization program: if a candidate is hiding his or her party afiliation in all advertising and public signage, they should forfit the $1.75 per voter.

  3. Liberal rats can’t stand the smell of their own stinking ship yet apparently that very same stinking ship is enjoying a bounce in the polls here in Ontario, it’s disgusting.
Paul Martin is the slimiest weasel politician Canada has seen in ages, it’s disgusting.

  5. I don’t recall who the candidate was — it was one of the Brampton, Ontario ridings — but on their radio ad on 680 News in Toronto, the Liberal candidate proudly states that they support the “traditional definition of marriage.”
    Just thought it was amusing.

  6. Off Topic here, but did anyone catch CPAC thur’s nite, I caught the tail end of one piece & I thought I heard Peter Van Dusen say something to the fact that if Martin loses he would instruct the liberal senate to vote against any Tory Motion’s, anybody here this? If that is true are we not talking DICTATORSHIP?

  7. Do you actually think a former justice minister and lawyer and law prof would get someone to call in and make those accusations? And from his campaign office?
    Come on…be serious.
I can understand Vellacott making nutbar accusations like that (On House of Commons letterhead no less…) but I thought the rest of the province was not quite so dim.

  8. What kind of a man would go out of their way to scare women? What kind of man who wants to run this country promote hatred of their opponents? Fear, smear, and hatred seems to be what Martin is all about. If you can’t dazzel them with brilliance, baffle them with bull. Is this the kind of man, vision we want in charge of our country? If he feels the way he does about Mr.Harper how does he feel about me, about you, about your sisters and brothers?
Who will he promote hatred of next? Who will be the next target of his scare campaign?
If I was standing on a downtown street saying what Mr. Martin says on national TV I would be arrested. Why would anyone vote for a party that stands for values that are so not Canadian.

  9. Jeff – not only has Axworthy apologized, the voice on the phone has been recognized. I’m trying to get a copy of the tape.

  10. Provencher Liberal candidate,Wes Penner has pulled the same “sovereign” style advertising here in Manitoba. In a 4 page pamphlet on justice reform there is not one hint of him being a Liberal or this being a Liberal sponsored product. At the end of the ad there is a ballot style box that has “yes I want justice system reform” with an X in a box beside the name Wes Penner. Under it is “No I don’t want justice system reform” with an X’less circle with the words “other candidate” where the other’s name would be. I’m not sure about others but I’m insulted by this confusing style of campaigning!?!? If I’m going to the store to buy some coffee beans, the roasting company proudly puts their name on the package. It’s a simple marketing concept known as “brand loyalty”. If the Liberals can’t even label themselves with their brand during a campaign………….I need not say more as we’ve lived with these clowns in power for so long now that nothing surprises me…..still disgusts me, but not surpised any more!

  11. “Hi, I’m Karen Redman. I am not a liberal but I play one on CPAC TV…”
    Suggested next campaign ad???

  12. The Statue of Lenin is being toppled as we speak in downtown Ottawa.
There’s just a bunch of politicans running with red on their sign but no sign of The Party that believes the Religious Right is the opiate of the masses.

  13. Interesting thing about the Kitchener center riding is that it is viewed by the party strategists as a bellwether riding…a sort of litmust test for party popularity performance…the riding has a long history of chosing an MP from a party that will form government. When Kitchener changes support it is because government is changing. Will they break with this historic voting trend or stay true to track record of voting for governing parties?

  14. Kate, if you have an opportunity, take a look at Axworthy’s apology.
He apologizes as far as his phones being misused. He had nothing to do with the call, and there is no indication that it was anyone on his team either.
It would be refreshing if a right wing blogger actually acknowledged this…not to mention how inappropriate Vellacott’s press release is; from pointing fingers, and posting peoples phone numbers, to using his House of Commons letterhead (Which is incredibly stupid of him).

  15. Good question WLM, its going to be a long weekend.
At least Harper is going to be in Sarnia Ont tomorrow.(40 minutes away)
I think I’ll load the girls up, and take them on a field trip.
They still remember meeting Preston 🙂

  16. Jeff wouldn’t it be refreshing if people would quit making excuses for liberals.
You sound like the people I talk to that defend Martin.
No offence but I’m just sick of liberal excuses.

  17. As mentioned by Duncan, Wes Penner (the Liberal candidate in the Provencher riding of MB) is trying to confuse voters with his Justice scheme. What makes it so dirty is he is trying to confuse voters with Vic Toews, the incumbent Conservative candidate & the Official Justice Critic. He will likely be the Justice Minister if the Conservatives win. Vic Toews is a shoe-in in Provencher btw.

  18. David,
Your postings are being forwarded. If you want to look like a complete —hole, then your boss should know so he can give you a raise in pay when he wins on Monday. You’re obviously a great asset to his campaign.

  19. Some Liberal Blogger, Dan McKenzie of “The Dan Report”, is reporting that a Liberal MP was assualted by one or more CPC supporters at a well-attended candidate’s debate:
    “Conservative Supporters Assault Liberal Incumbent?
I have received this description of an all candidates meeting for Kitchener-Conestoga. Sounds like things got out of hand.
Tonight was the final all-candidates meeting in a little community just outside Kitchener, St Agatha. The Albrecht forces were out in force and cheered loudest when Albrecht said he favoured ‘traditional marriage’.
Liberal incumbent Lynn Myers said in his one-minute closing comments that we don’t want to elect a Canadian version of George W Bush and the Republican party. This generated a chorus of boos from the Albrecht supporters in the audience.
Afterwards when he was leaving the hall, two of the Albrecht supporters, 2 men, approached Lynn and told him that they didn’t like the Bush references, and then one punched Lynn in the shoulder. At that point, Lynn and his lawyer who was with him, decided that it was time to get out of there before things got even nastier.”
I checked everywhere and there is no mention of this story anywhere. He updated the post last night, claiming the story would be in today’s paper:
    “UPDATE
The Kitchener Waterloo Record will have the Story Tommorow.”
Of course, this is a CYA move and there is no mention of it anywhere. Other Regressive Bloggers are reporting this allegation as fact, from MyBlahg:
    “CONSERVATIVE THUGS ASSAULT LIBERAL CANDIDATE
The Dan Report is reporting that Liberal candidate in the Kitchener-Conestoga riding, Lynn Myers, was assaulted by supporters of the Conservative candidate at an all candidates meeting.”

  20. Mugs. Huh?
OK – you go ahead and believe that Mr. Aworthy had something to do with that phone call. It appears that Kate was seeing it that way as well, when suggested his apology regarding the phones was somehow an admission of guilt. (I prefer to believe she simply has not read the actual statement)
Again, suggesting that Mr. Axworthy would actually be behind this is absurd.
Also, please don’t tell yourself that it’s okay for Vellacott to use House of Commons letterhead to make accusations and post peoples phone numbers. That would be making excuses.
Not trying to troll here – I just think, in the case of Vellacott, there is far too much charity. He is sleazier than any liberal party member you will ever meet and one of the worst MPs ever sent to Ottawa.

  21. Anyone phoning in to an open-line radio or tv show would know that being put on hold is part of the process- sometimes for an extended period of time.
Hard to believe the staff in Axworthy’s (a seasoned politician), office would NOT notice a stranger hovering on one of their phones, let alone gaining access to one.

  22. “Again, suggesting that Mr. Axworthy would actually be behind this is absurd.”
I suggest Mr. Axworthy would actually be behind this.

  23. Jeff,
For the record, you believe that no-one on Axworthy’s staff had anything to do with the call? And that you know that Axworthy has admitted that one of his office phones was used?
Was this a sophisticated false-flag operation that involved burglary and was inspired in the brain of a Canadian Karl Rove, or even Rove himself attempting to plant a stooge govt in Canada, so that we get control of your military? Or did the fascist miscreant use a Romulan cloaking device?

  24. By the way, it was Axworthy who claimed that nobody on his staff was involved, in his, you know, statement.
Apparently, among his powers is the ability to instantly prove a negative. (If you understood logic at all, you would know that that is an awsome power, reserved to God even in the comic books.)

  25. By the way Jeff, here is a technical defense for you to use:
It is possible to inject signaling into the phone system to fool caller-id. That is probably what they did. At least it is more likely than the cloaking device. And Axworthy could brazen it out, since proving a negative, as you know, is so notoriously difficult.
“The Internet-PTN[Public Telephone Network] convergence allows attackers inroads via entities with poorly secured SS7 networks. ISDN connections are also points of unauthorized entry.
Once access to a PTN is gained, an attacker can perpetrate modificcation, fabrication, interception…” In other words, substitute someone elses phone number in the caller id.

  26. I never brought up you being a troll….you did.
“He is sleazier than any liberal party member you will ever meet and one of the worst MPs ever sent to Ottawa.”
    Worse than Belinda, WOW!
I find myself agreeing with most conservative women, their special 🙂
Jeff I believe Liberals will do anything to hold on to power, they are morally neutral, and modern liberalism is an ideology of the self centered and selfish.
If that belief makes me biased so be it any party that would rather remove the NWSC, than ever acknowlege property rights.Has no respect for ALL the people in Canada only a select few.
I have more respect for myself and my neighbours to ever vote liberal.
Are there sleazy conservatives sure….but I’m willing to bet there are way more conservatives with a conscience they guide themselves by.
To tell you the truth I’ve lived in a rural riding with a social liberal MP for years, as far as sleazy goes.
When they state their disgust over C-68, native uprisings(Ipperwash), SSM yet stand behind their government and yes defend Paul Martin, while holding up the talisman of small town rural values, thats about as sleazy as you can get.
Maybe they are “good” people, but I look at them as confused conservatives that could have started the end of the democratic deficit by crossing the floor when it could of counted.
Coincedently mine retired from politics, guess her conscience caught up with her, or she may have stopped beliving what she was telling her constituents.

  27. Uh, folks – this happened in Saskatoon, where the movers and shakers know each other personally. The voice was recognized, ok?

  28. “The voice was recognized, ok?”
Don’t you see? That’s what makes it such a perfect dirty trick! They probably took the man’s voice and digitally edited it together to make it sound convincing, the same way they are keeping the whole “Weekend at Ossama’s” series going. This has to be Rove’s doing. No-one else could have concieved such a daring plan!
    Prove it’s not true.

  29. I always took the term troll as a sobriquet of honor. Trolls show up where they are not wanted, and demand responses to questions people would rather not answer.

  30. Sorry about the blogarrhea. It is just that I can’t get it through my head that some Liberals actually buy this stuff.

  31. I just heard on the radio that Ed Broadbent has called the Liberal campaign “Arrogant, offensive and manipulative. ” Here, here, Mr. Ed,that’s the smartest thing I’ve heard from anyone on the left since the campaign started.

After the Hamilton East-Stoney Creek candidates’ debate last Thursday, MP Tony Valeri ran from the national media. Pictured here, Mr. Valeri answers a CBC reporter’s questions regarding cutting taxes on income trusts and the sale of a property next to his home, after being forced back inside the school after two people stood in front of his van to keep it from leaving.

  33. Moptop: “Jeff,
For the record, you believe that no-one on Axworthy’s staff had anything to do with the call? ”
Hi Moptop. That’s incorrect – I’m not sure how you came to that conclusion. I have no way of knowing.
I said that Axworthy himself has nothing to do with it. Again, we are talking about a respected professor, former cabinet minister and lawyer.
Honestly, if you knew the type of stunts Vellacott has pulled in his days, it is far more likely that he was behind the to embarrass the Liberals. It would take nothing to have someone volunteer on an opposing campaign, go work the phones, and then make that call.
Mugs “I never brought up you being a troll….you did.”
I never said you did. I just said I was not trying to troll by offering a contray opinion. In my country, contray opinions are allowed. A Troll would be someone who comes on and leaves a a message specifically to piss people off.
As far as Belinda goes (and here is where you get to roll your eyes and pat yourself on the back for having me all figured out) – I actually voted for her in the leadership contest (Surprise! A card carry conservative!) because I felt (quite rightly) that she would offer a more honest and moderate tone to the leadership of the party. She would have made a great PM too.
The disloyal conservatives she worked alongside hate her – not for leaving, but for admitting why she left: The conservatives under Harper are not something she wanted to see in power.
Anyway Mugs – I’m interested in discussion, not insults – so thank you for being *mostly* civil.
I think that the idea that Axowrthy himself would have supported this call in thing is incredibly stupid. If someone wants to call in and sit on hold, and disguise their number, all they have to do is dial *67.
    Vellacott probably knows that too.

  34. As far as Belinda goes (and here is where you get to roll your eyes and pat yourself on the back for having me all figured out) – I actually voted for her in the leadership contest (Surprise! No doubt she would have made living off the avails of prostitution legal.

  35. Karen redman, Andrew Telegdi, Tony Valeri…
I heard radio ads for all three in the last 24 hours…
not once did I hear Liberal or Paul Martin

  36. ol Hoss – very classy remark. Did Maurice give you that line during prayer service?
I’m sure Belinda would be offended if she heard you say that too – but I doubt she spends a lot of time near your trailer park. Pig.

  37. I work with single mothers and Harpers plan for daycare is really worry too me and them. Will the private sector fill the gap and how much will it cost to send their children to daycare? I worked on a tax form today for one of the women and I cant see how the lowering of the GST will help her at all. She barely makes enough to get a little over the minimum back in GST rebates, her savings doesnt even cover the cost of bus fare. Speaking of bus fares since she doesnt pay any income tax how does she get the credit? Seems to me that a lot goes to the upper middle income bracket and the amount goes down ending at nothing for the ones that need help the most. Good thing that hes putting more police on the streets as the crime wave will grow because the poor have nowhere to turn.
Do we have a clear picture of what Harper’s plans are to make sure we dont run a deficit?

  38. One wonders why anyone would have children if they can’t take care of them.
She barely makes enough to get a little over the minimum back in GST rebates, her savings doesnt even cover the cost of bus fare.
The solution is simple, move where there’s a better job. Alberta has workers wanted signs everywhere you look. It’s a job hunters paradise.
Good thing that hes putting more police on the streets as the crime wave will grow because the poor have nowhere to turn.
Any explanation why the 1930’s wasn’t the most crime ridden decade in modern times?

  39. “Any explanation why the 1930’s wasn’t the most crime ridden decade in modern times”
    A couple:
    1. They couldn’t afford the bullets.
    2. Morals were a bit different then.

  40. Most people who got sucked into her working for her campaign before they met her were thoroughly disillusioned with her after they met her. She was an air head with no original thoughts of her own.
Some radio talk show hosts openly admitted to being embarassed to interview her.
Remember her big line “I want to bake a bigger pie”
    Lord give me a break.
I wonder how she feels now that the Liberals are bashing her mentors Harris and Mulroney – I just love it.

  41. Possible New Liberal Signs?

Kate over at Small Dead Animals suggests that over the weekend we might see some new Liberal election signs as candidate after candidate tries to distance themselves from the disastrous campaign run by Paul Martin.
