  1. It is the custom amongst visiting ships to fly the flag of the host country while in that country’s territory.
“When a ship enters a foreign port she flies the flag of that country from the main mast as a courtesy and acknowledgment of that country’s sovereignty.

“Foreign vessels may fly the Canadian flag as a “courtesy flag” when they are berthed in a Canadian port. The flag then is customarily flown from the foremast.”
    http://www.pch.gc.ca/progs/cpsc-ccsp/etiquette/2_e.cfm
Not only is the flag tattered, it’s also a foreign flagged ship flying the courtesy flag. Nothing says it better Paul.

  2. Kudos Kate…
this is the ultimate summary of our Glorious Leader’s hypocrisy

  3. The story on Bourque attached to this picture says the crew expects to be let go after the election. The ship will be reflagged and crewed with cheaper Russian sailors.
CSL is only waiting on this so it doesn’t look bad on PMPM during the election.

  4. Jesus!! What a metaphor. The flag is as tattered as PMPM’s integrity and if he pulls this election out of the fire the state of confederation will be in no better shape.

  5. Once again, the Canadian flag proves to be anything but convenient for Paul Martin.
Brian Mulroney was implicated in scandal to be sure, but at least the main one involved purchase of Airbus planes from France which can claim some part in building this country. How much has Barbados, Liberia, and Vanuatu contributed to our country’s history?

  6. Leave it to Paul Martin to take our money and give us Canadian flags back while refusing to put new ones on his own ships, regardless of who pays for new flags. And I’m surprised to see ONE maple leaf on a CSL ship. Maybe they put it there for optics?

  7. 2 months ago l did not know what a “BLOG” was , but with the election looming and all the talk–dug in to find out,of the 100’s of sites out there l would vote “small dead animals” as NO 1, head and shoulders above all the rest. Thanks Kate!

Story Update: Martin asks auditor general to look at family’s contracts
    – article from CBC News Online, February 4, 2004. >>
    Introduction
Disclosure examines how the Martin family has survived and succeeded in the tough and often ruthlessly competitive trade conducted out of sight on the high seas a world full of tax havens, shell companies and flags of convenience.
    Paul Martin Inc.
From his days as a deck hand on a Lake Erie fishing boat, and later as a seaman on ocean-going ships, Paul Martin has long had an affinity for the sailor’s life. This is a closer look at Paul Martin’s history in the shipping industry.
    Inside Canada Steamship Lines
The Canadian sailors climbed aboard Canada Steamship Lines, thinking they too would be part of Paul Martin’s grand plans. But for them, the ocean adventure was short-lived. Martins plans didnt include them.
    Flags of Convenience
In the international shipping business, the flag you fly determines the wages you pay and the minimum standards you follow. If you lower the Canadian flag and replace it with another countrys, our employment and environmental standards no longer apply.
    The Vanuatu Connection
To understand how the world of international shipping works, we went to the other side of the world, to a little known South Pacific paradise called Vanuatu.
    The Australia Connection
Four years ago, CSL expanded to Australia. CSL’s critics say the company took advantage of an Australian law that allows foreign freighters and their crews to work in domestic waters if no domestic ship is available.
    A Taxing Dilemma
In 1992, a year before Paul Martin became Finance Minister, Canada Steamship Lines set up five companies in Liberia, Africa, a tax haven of choice in the offshore shipping business.

  9. If PMPM was assasinated, I’d fly my Canadian flag at the highest mast I could get it to. Hell, I’d have some more pole welded on just to get it higher.
PMPM does not hold a vision of MY Canada. He has no vision, period. What a sad and sorry example of (so-called) leadership…of this country and of his CSL and his tatty flags he flies on his scows.

  10. – the house of cards is coming down
    – the dyke is about to burst
    – the logjam is about to break open
whatever the metaphore, the Liberals mess is coming to a climax with each passing hour, what an exciting time.
Almost reminds me of the Romanian revolt when dictator Chauchescu was lynched.

  11. The state of the flag in the picture shows the respect the owner has for this country.

  12. “Dear PM: Which talent would you most like to have? – P.N., Edmonton
PM responds: “I’d like to be able to carry a tune. Also, the ability to make myself invisible.””
Well, as I saw someone else say, he will soon fulfill his dream to make himself invisible… as far as his political career goes, at least. 😉

Everyone knows the moment when it went so wrong for Paul Martin. It’s just that every moment is different.
In their bitter weariness at the end of a cruel campaign, Liberals trace the turning point to the RCMP investigation into suspected leaks of Finance Minister Ralph Goodale’s income trusts decision. It freed the spectre of scandal to stalk Liberals who were until then holding their own. Static public opinion became fluid, and a drift toward a suddenly not-so-scary Stephen Harper became a current. >> http://www.rapp.org/url/?K8YD3G3W

  14. Libereria, for the information of questioning minds is the African State, bought by Unuited States, for Negro people (ex slaves) who wanted to go home after the American Civil war. Not many of the former slaves wanted to go back to Africa but some did. I wonder why pmpm would want anything to do with an American African type state?
