Calvert Endorses Conservative Government

CBC reporting up is down, black is white, and NDP Premier Lorne Calvert is backing the Conservatives;

Saskatchewan Premier Lorne Calvert says if the Conservatives win the federal election, it will be good news for this province’s equalization problems.
Calvert, whose government is NDP, has been pushing for a new deal for Saskatchewan’s oil and gas money for more than a year.
Equalization is the money Ottawa pays to have-not provinces. When Saskatchewan’s oil and gas revenues increase, its equalization payments tend to be reduced. Calvert has argued that Saskatchewan should be allowed to keep a larger share of oil and gas revenue before equalization is “clawed back”.
The federal Liberals acknowledged past problems with a $120-million cheque in 2004, but so far they have not agreed to any permanent solution.
The Conservatives say they will exempt non-renewable resources from the formula, but it might not happen right away. Calvert said the sooner, the better.
“We would want to see some very quick response,” he said. “Mr. Harper has made it very clear that in the new equalization arrangement that he would put in place, non-renewables will be removed, excluded. So that’s good news.”

Brad Farquhar has the numbers.
That’ll teach Jack to open his yip on oil and gas. I think Lorne just hedged his bets on a Conservative majority. The last thing he needs in the next provincial election is a SaskParty that can deliver something he hasn’t.

  1. NDP endorsement of the Conservatives – at least one premier can see what’s best for Canada.
Unfortunately, here in Dalton “I won’t raise taxes” McLiar country, our esteemed premier is endorsing 5 more years of theft and mismanagement. McLiar’s core support is Toronto and the fed Libs core support is Toronto, but Toronto will actually get nothing from the Liberal Party. Mayor Miller also endorses the thieves and liars from the Liberal Party – he’s just like them, raises taxes and gives it to his friends who run ‘social programs’. And Toronto is no better off, except for touchy-feely speechifying. Fear campaigns work – but only for Liberals, not for Canada.

  2. I think Lorne Calvert is being absolutely delusional (no surprise there!) if he believes that Conservative MPs are going to magically ‘forgive’ the sheer slander and malicious treatment given to many of them, both as a party, and as individuals, by his NDP government.
Remember — for the past couple sessions of the Saskatchewan Legislature, Rev. Calvert has stood up in his seat and effectively accused these MPs of selling their province out to boost their own partisan agendas. Nothing could be further from the truth, and there are a lot of fences to mend.
Brad Farquhar, candidate for Wascana, unfortunately seems to be equally delusional about what a Calvert government would possibly do with another $800 million. No doubt such additional money would be wasted by the civil service — more SPUDCOs, MLPPs, SaskTel MAXs, Channel Lakes, CCTAs, huge civil servant pay increases, big severance packages for the burgeoning government retiree rolls, etc. — not towards meaningful tax relief.
But I think we can trust the Conservative MPs to not do anything that would benefit the NDP politically. They’d all rather have Brad Wall on the other side of the negotiating table than Lorne Calvert.

  3. I just wanted to comment on how much I enjoy your blog. I decided to do a little research and check the mood of the upcoming election in Canada. Americans have got little exposure through the media about the elections. I might be wrong but the media I am sure hates to give any more news of conservatives anywhere winning in the world especially if its our next door neighbor. Perhaps its a blessing ,since the msm is so biased and the fact that as Americans(me included) this parlimentary system that yall and rest of world use is pretty foreign to us. The most the average American knows is in your system the party that gets the most seats gets control. But I suspect in reality with coalitions etc its much more complicated. So perhaps we are blessed that the MSM in the US hasnt been reporting it very much because I am sure they would not portray the true picture of whats going on.
I wish the conservatives the very best of luck and and special congrats to to conservative bloggers out there. I am following this election with a little self interest I must admit. In the spoof movie Canadian Bacon, Alan Alda that plays the President, when informed that the Canada has boycotted the Miss Universe Pagent he says in horror “what if that caught on down here. I knew that politics in Canada had gone a little left but it wasnt until recently that I realized that EU type nonsense was occuring up North especially in the form of what I believe is called “human Right Commissions. Well not to intrude in yalls business but when these commisions start sanctioning the Catholic Knights of Columbus Halls because they dont rent to Lesbians for wedding receptions I start to feel even way down here that my free speech and association is threatened, LIke alan alda in the movie I think “what if that catches on down here”.
Anywho good luck. It appears with Europe becoming more islamic(the militant islam) every day, with Tehran about to get the Bomb, and other absurdities it appears the World is about to get alot more complicated. In the last elections in the UK,Australia, and the US the people have decided to make sure the grownup should be in charge during this important time. Its great to see that a crucial part of the Anglo allance, Canada, is about to add to this trifecta. I certanity hope so because at times I think the rest of the World has it heads in the sand about the current reality in the world. This evening has brought me great hope. Give the liberals hell.

  4. “NEWS FLASH”…… BOYS FROM BRAZIL SIGHTED…. KEEP A SHARP EYE ON…. GEORGE W. BUSH….STEPHEN HARPER..THESE ARE CLONES OF THE GERMAN’S “Mein Kampf” WITH THEIR VERSION OF A SOCIAL DEMOCRATIC PARTY FOR THE WORLD…

  5. wtf was that, Kurt?
James – we are hopeful, but the left have been known to pull major rabbits out of the hat when threatened. If you pray, include us. If you don’t, kind wishes will work.

  6. Jeepers funding cripes. Let’s see: the Toronto Star supports Harper…check. Paul Martin’s proxy suggests that Quebecers vote for the BQ…check. Lorne Calvert hopes for a Harper victory …check.
Hmm. Okay. Look for Harper to quit as Conservative leader a day before the election, on the grounds that he is actually a diehard gay Liberal. Then look for Amelia Earhardt to land at JFK…

  7. Candice,
I def will be praying for conservative success. On some of my mailing list I been hearing alarm from Catholics in Canada that perhaps it would be illegal to actively talk about their faith in public. I thought this was paranoid at first but then I read this. http://www.lifesite.net/ldn/2005/mar/05033001.html
Basically some Catholic Bishop in Alberta is being “investigated” over a complaint in a pastoral letter. If a Roman Catholic Bishop cant talk about Catholic Doctrine to his flock whats next. Newspaers Magazines, Blogs? Its my experience that the greatest guarantee of Liberty is free speech whether its liberal, moderate of extreme it doesnt matter. I admit I am totally clueless about the Canadian Constition. However I got to think when the govt thinks it job is to make sure people are not offended there is a serious problem. LIke I say to people we have freedom of Speech not Freedom from Speech. Dont worry I am praying a whole rosary for yall this week.
I am especially following the reaction to the “tory blogs” and the complaints that were filed. Another tactic we are familar with down here is the attempt to try surpress dissent from the offical line of the msm by cloaking it in terms of “fairness in campaigns” right. Thankfully that was stopped but we also have to be vigilant. Good luck

  8. Off topic….
James Hood. The grown ups in charge of Australia and the US, I agree. The UK I’m not so sure. Blair signs up to the EU and all manner of left wing nonsense. By doing so he cleverly disarms potential critics, who think he’s running with the right side. In reality he’s trying to have it both ways, but his heart’s on the left. A bit like the Liberal Party of Canada really.
I admit, the Conservatives were not ready to win the 2005 Election in the UK. But under new leadership, they now on the way back. Blair as a leader in the UK is rapidly losing power and just marking time.
He is in Office but not Power.
    TO CANADA
Steven Harper has played a marvellous hand in this election, aided admittedly by Liberal Incomptence. The Liberals are absolutely terrified that the full extent of their corruption and mismanagement will be revealed should he win. For the future of Canada it is essential that he wins. That is only the first part, though. The real battle starts once he is in office.

  9. Isn’t there a fine line MINORITY government in Sask. Maybe Culvert will cross the floor and try to replace Brad Wall as the next Sask Party premier? Strange things like this have happened. It happened in Canada. In the Yukon. An NDP became a Conservative. He won the nomination for conservative Party leader. The Conservatives won the election. A back bench NDP became a Conservative Premier. In the Yukon. In Canada. I am not making this up.

another liebral facing charges…even if it IS a provincial MLA, the ‘brand name’ is out front….and it was federal money so people are going to be wondering if any of it got ‘kicked back’ as was reported earlier
    Former MLA Boudreau heading west
SYDNEY (CP) A former Cape Breton member of the legislature who faces 91 charges of forgery and uttering forged documents wants to go to Western Canada to find a job.
And provincial court Judge Peter Ross agreed Tuesday to lift a restriction that had prevented the accused, Brian Boudreau, from leaving Nova Scotia.
Defence lawyer Bill Burchell told reporters outside the Sydney courtroom that Boudreau who lives in Bras dOr and was a Liberal member for the former riding of Cape Breton-The Lakes wants to ply his trade as a skilled auto mechanic.
The judge agreed to adjourn the case until Feb. 20 to give the defence lawyer and Crown time to discuss a date for a preliminary inquiry.
Boudreau elected trial by judge and jury on the 91 counts.
The charges result from a lengthy RCMP investigation into a boardwalk and marina project that received $600,000 in funding from federal sources.
The charges deal with allegations of falsification of employment records

  13. OK, but will the endorsement last after the CPC says that their government won’t give Sask. a better equalization deal?
I just heard 2nd hand that “on the CBC news this morning that Calvert was surprised to hear that the Cons aren’t going to be giving Saskatchewan any better equalization deal.”
Anyway, I see this as being more anti-Liberal than pro-CPC or anti-NDP.

  14. So the NDP premier of a longtime have not province supports the CPC. Meanwhile, the premier of the province getting robbed $23 billion a year by the Liberals supports the Liberals.
There’s no good reason why companies like Nortel and Cognos couldn’t move at least some of their operations to more business-friendly environs like, say, Lorne Calvert’s Saskatchewan. Ontario is going down the toilet big time (see looming energy crisis, gang crime, etc.)and if the people and government there don’t dummy up fast capital – and jobs – will start fleeing.

  15. Not so fast Kate, the “lying weasel” calvert has flip flopped again on this issue again this morning. how can this guy criticize Harper, does anybody remember this quote, ” the status quo is not on” how long ago was that and what has been done about school taxes on rural property ! what a weasel !

  16. Check Kurt’s email address. You will be very surprised It comes from sen.parl.gc.ca
Now who there would be emailing such trash to this blog?? And doesn’t this show how very desperate they are. What are the Liberals so frightened of – other than losing the election?

  17. Carl is right..Calvert did an about face this morning on the radio going back to his old tricks of grandstanding if a Conservative government doesn’t give Sask. an energy accord in a more timely manner. I think ole’ Preacher Lorne realizes that he needs to get maximum spin on this with a provincial election in ’07 and an opposition Leader in Brad Wall who could really work well with Harper.

  18. Re: Kurt Huber’s post about the “Boys from Brazil”
The email address atkinn@sen.parl.gc.ca belongs to Senator Norman K Aitkins. He was appointed by Brian Mulrony in 1986. I don’t have time to follow this up but I doubt he would be happy about someone using his email address to post comments like that.
Hope someone can run with it.

  19. wait, I thought the reason they took down the raiseaflag.ca website was because they didn’t want to influence a federal election. At least that is what the website said.
So what, coming out in support of a party BECAUSE of their stance on that same issue isn’t trying to influence the election? I might be confused if I wasn’t so lucid.
Boy, this Calvert really thinks we are idiots.

  20. The eastern media club is starting to circle the wagons.Lloyd Robertson let his bias slip last night during the news when he blurted the word”Liberal”out of sinc in his broadcast. The support spread in the polls is being downplayed and questioned by the eastern media(perhaps in the hope that liberal supporters will not jump ship)and even Mike Duffy seems to have been put on a bit shorter lease.
I hear that tonight is Mr. Harper’s turn for the town hall meeting on air(ctv?).It will be interesting to see how the media packs the hall and what type of questions are asked of Mr. Harper.

  21. Kurt (or whoever you are),
Your misunderstanding of Mein Kampf is astounding. Hitler’s vision was based on two concepts: pangermanism and anti-semitism. Neither is applicable in modern politics.
First, anti-semitism. There is no Jewish conspiracy to rule the world. More to the point, no one credible believes that there is. This was not the case in post WWI Europe, which is why Hitler’s views found traction with the average citizen.
Secondly, pangermanism. The idea that a successful nation is a self-sufficient nation has largely passed by the wayside. No one thinks that a country should produce all of its own goods anymore. Any economist worth his/her salt will tell you that the best way to run a national economy is to produce only what you can’t import cheaper from somewhere else. Hence the transition in first world country to a knowledge economy. Also, the underlying premise to pangermanism – that there are members of the same ethnic background in other countries just waiting to be rejoined to the Fatherland – makes absolutely no sense in a fully multi-cultural system. Who would be annexed to return more ethnic Canadians to Canada, or ethnic Americans to the US?

Yeah, Georgie sure comes across as a grownup to me. But your funniest line was this: “I think the rest of the World has it heads in the sand about the current reality in the world.” Yeah, that’s right, Mr. Hood – it’s the rest of the world that has the problem – not you blinkered, murderous, sociopathic apologists for fascism who get all your news from Liars. No, you’re not the problem. It’s all of we stupid people demanding honesty in government, demanding our political representatives develop an interest in protecting the common good and a respect for the rule of law by EVERYONE – we’re the problem.
Go f..k yourself and the horse you rode in on too, you dumb, brown shirted shit.
And to those of you reading his bull: Doesnt misinformed and ignorant support from cretins like Mr. Hood, here, embarrass you even a little?
    Just asking.
Oh, and Anonalogue, who conned you into thinking you had a brain? Only the most ignorant could ever accept the words you posted here as anything other than the idiotic nonsense they actually are.

  23. Interesting dynamic at work there. A wheatfield dipper has more empathy/trust in a fellow westerner even though a conservative that in another eastern political blowhard who is in the same party.
Demonstrates the isolation and feeling of distrust of made in Ottawa national policy there is in the west….and it crosses all party lines….the common gound is western estrangement creates aliances with common goals.

  24. Okay, this thread is making me go all “history teacher”, and I just finished that semester, so I thought I wasn’t going to have to teach it again until next fall… anyways. Fascism = italian political movement founded by Benito Mussolini. This has got to be the most overused and misused in modern political jargon. I bet half the people who casually toss it out have no idea what fascism is actually about.

  25. Well Arthur, that was brilliant. Your tirade, which consisted of name calling and an utter lack of real substance, reveals your complete ignorance.

  26. My initial reaction…what a gift! Thanks, Lorne! Then upon reflecting…Did he make a slip? Possible. Did the cbc get it wrong…maybe even “make it up”? Perish the thought. (Actually perish the publicly funded cbc. Let them sink (best scenario) or swim commercially.) No, methinks it’ll neither help nor harm the cause although local dippers must be scratching their heads. Here in Saskatchewan. Our premier. Acknowledging the Conservatives. Strange bedfellows in deed.

  27. OT–Report on page A-3 of Ottawa Citizen saying lib tax cuts combined with spending spree put us into deficit.

  28. More from the Ottawa Citizen–Goodale’s tax cut turned surplus to deficit
Liberal income tax cuts announced in the November mini-budget plunged the government more than $3 billion into the red during the month, according to figures released yesterday by the Finance Department. The cuts, which were retroactive to Jan. 1, 2005, would be cancelled by the Conservatives if they are elected. (E. Beauchesne OttCit A3; M. Van de Walle JdeM p.44)

  29. My special Liberal cyberstalker Arty shreeeeeeeeeked: “Oh, and Anonalogue, who conned you into thinking you had a brain?”
Public Works and Government Services Canada, Public Safety And Emergency Preparedness Canada, DND, two of the 100 largest software companies in the world, and the Univeristy of Ottawa, among other clients, who’ve paid dearly for my scarely available software development skils and critical thinking abilities. Sorry, gotta protect my rep 😉 Getting back on point: Ontario gets jacked $23 billion a year and Dalton consents to this; see you at the polls, McG.

  30. Do we have to resort to name calling and insults to get our points across? Damn its starting to look like a typical Liberal ad campaigne!
SDA is one of my favorite sites, I hate to see it marred by slanderous rhetoric such as I’ve read in this thread.

  31. Calvert just proved he’s just as twisted as his federal counterpart who will sleep with seperatists and tory’s. That calvert would support conservatives just proved what I suspected (closet conservative)…
He will get help with his gas and oil and uranium refineing projects. Troops with body bags just sitting waiting for the unknown disaster’s they won’t and refuse to talk about incase anybody noticed. Cost of troop units should equal what he would of got in eq payments..anyways.
If Clavert is listening remember “the conservatives aren’t crooks, they are just shiesters”. he really should know better.

  32. “SDA is one of my favorite sites, I hate to see it marred by slanderous rhetoric such as I’ve read in this thread.”
Me, too, Rottigirl, but something tells me Mr Decco is cruising for a bruis- er, banning, at this rate, since he’s spreading his “charm” in other comboxes as well.
Puh! Why do the only leftists who come around here have obsessions and potty mouths? I suppose it’s b/c they’ve been kicked off of lefty equivalents of “SDA”, which is where more sensible leftists (there are some) are hanging.

  33. OFF TOPIC- Don Newman just showed a clip of tonights interview with Peter M. I was right, Peter is leaning left. Wonder if that is a subliminal message of his true feelings and wishes. With that much bias, no wonder he can’t sit straight.
