First, we had Paul Martin suggest that parents weren’t knowledgeable about raising their children.
Now we have Scott Reid, king of the pitbulls, suggesting that parents will “blow the 1200 on beer and popcorn” rather than on their children or childcare (what is it with Reid & the word “blow“?). And if you view this Question Period clip, you’ll see that the Liberal Party intends to stand behind his remarks, at least for the moment.
Will the arrogance ever end? I’ll be curious to see if Reid’s comments get as much airtime as the CPC mailer that went out regarding “homosexual sex marriage” (honestly, you’d think the guy could proofread the thing).
crossposted
UPDATE: Reid has apologized, and CTV has killed the original link. Damn. I hope someone took a screen shot.
UPDATE #2: Sign the kidsnotbeer petition.
UPDATED yet again: Stephen Taylor has more links on this, including one to Proud to be Canadian, who has a clip of BOTH gaffes.

Paul Martin’s Liberal spokesman, Scott Reid ” Canadian parents will buy beer and popcorn”.
Look into a mirror Scott and see a Liberal asshole.
Seems like this guy is becoming more of a liability to the Liberals than anything. And what do they expect to accomplish politically by essentially calling people too stupid to live their own lives?
Sure socialists will say “Yeah right on, government! Micromanage my life for me!”, and these kinds of words from Reid will definately satistfy them, but is this not like preaching to the choir? Perhaps they’re trying to win votes from the NDP by doing this?
But hey, I won’t complain, its helping the public to really see them for what they are, which is full of contempt for the average joe like you and me.

Martin ‘a jackass’
Parents of slain teen say prime minister’s proposed handgun ban will do nothing to stop youth violence
By ALAN CAIRNS, TORONTO SUN
A grieving Yvette, whose eldest son Jason was gunned down on Aug. 30, say Liberal policies have led to youth violence. (Ernest Doroszuk/ Sun)
MAPLE — Prime Minister Paul Martin is a “jackass” if he thinks that banning handguns will “choke off” the deadly weaponry of Toronto street gangs, says a man whose son was slain.
“For this so-called prime minister of ours to come into the low-income areas of this city and make a statement banning guns … I look at him as a jackass … and I’ll never vote Liberal again as long as I live,” said Theodore Huxtable, whose eldest son Jason, 18, was killed on Aug. 30.
And Huxtable gave a stern warning that if justice is not served in his son’s death, he will seek his own vengeance.
“I’ll be part of your news … I’ve told police the same thing … they say ‘Mr. Huxtable, you shouldn’t make these statements’ … they can’t say I didn’t warn them,” he said.
Huxtable said his family’s grief is so overwhelming that he just doesn’t care.
His eldest son, Jason Huxtable, a loving, friendly, gentle, hard-working churchgoer, was slain in his car at a Magellan Rd. townhouse complex, near Jane St. and Shepherd Ave., in broad daylight as he drove there to give a female friend a ride.
He was not a criminal and did not have gang links. His parents believe he was shot out of envy.
His alleged killer is a 15-year-old boy who is charged with second-degree murder. Under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, his name cannot be published. >>>

“First, we had Paul Martin suggest that parents weren’t knowledgeable about raising their children.”
That’s not what Martin said, or implied.
More word games. More dishonest manipulation.
Candace, this new neighborhood is REALLY not having a very positive impact on your integrity. Seriously.
First Scott Reid says on CBC this morning that Canadian parents will spend their $1200 daycare funding on “beer and popcorn”.
(Audio link of interview available at http://www.cbc.ca/sunday/ under “Campaign Promises”)
Then on CTV Question Period today, John Duffy, given a chance to retract by Tim Powers, instead reasserts Reid’s slam on Canadian parents.
(Video link available at…
http://www.ctv.ca//servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/20051208/reid_childcare_051211/20051208?s_name=election2006&no_ads= RHS under “Party strategists…”)
It’s nice to know exactly what Liberals think of Canadian parents, eh? Certainly clears the air on this topic.
My sister runs a regulated day home and said the exact same thing about parents when I challenged her support of the liberal day care plan. I pointed out that being a mother of two she just insulted herself, but the point of was lost on her. sighhhh, if the majority of voters are like her it’ll be another liberal minority. Check out Tom Brodbeck’s column in the Winnipeg Sun for a better explanation of the Tory day care plan.
Ranger
Fast apology…wow they must have realized they stepped in one major pool of sheepdip
http://www.cbc.ca/story/canadavotes2006/national/2005/12/11/daycare051211.html
Scott Reid and Robert McLelland should start a club.
ranger,
Of course your sister would rather be government funded. Regular payer, stable, doesnt get uppity about out of line day care workers yelling at the children, or moving them to another place, or missing the odd payment.
Customers, there a bitch arent they….
No I am sure she would rather have the cheque that pays for her to have the space rather than actually filling the space.
The other contradiction is, if Canadian parents are having trouble paying for daycare, which is why the liberals want “cheap” government funded daycare, why would they spend it on anything other daycare…..unless of course Canadians arent having trouble paying…which makes no sense.
Liberal plan…10 years from now they’ll be a Canadian daycare act where if there are private daycares the provinces will lose their funding. This is an encroachment on provincial jurisdction and the feds should stay out, other than direct transfers to parents. This is a very slippery slope that will end in a very ugly way.
Even though I agree with the stupidity of the comment and what specifically it implies … there is a case to be make for the horrid behaviour of children today. Not that the state should have any hand in child raising.
The point I will make is that I deal with schools regularly, I carry things in and out and never will a student offer to hold a door .. more likely they will push past me and let the door swing into me.
Try to eat in a family restaurant some time. The kids run wild.
Take a look at how most young girls and boys for that matter dress and present themselves in public places such a malls.
Most of the girls look like sluts and most of boys look like retards.
Where are the parents and indeed how are they raising or not raising these imps.
Meanwhile have a laugh at Duke’s Place, so you don’t find your self crying ALL the time.
http://dukemcgoo.blogspot.com/
I bet that will be G.W.Bush fault.
On 2005-12-06 one of the national daylies quoted Mr. Martin as having said that “Mr. Harper’s version of child care is very different … than the one that is agreed to by the vast majority of people who are knowledgeable”.
Oh, and Balbulican, your knowledge of the history of this neighborhood is sparse.
Can you imagine if a CPC member made this statement?
Dear Lord……..
Maybe Scott Reid’s own childhood experience was being raised by parents that feed him beer and popcorn. That would explain why he want a socialist nanny state to raise all children so they don’t have to suffer as he has.
Ranger, explain to your sister that under the Tory plan, they will actually fund her if she wants to make more spaces available. That’s the message that is being lost in all of this.
Balbulican, as I mentioned on my site, I may have misquoted but the intent is there.
Splitting hairs is kinda like one of those strawman arguments you like to accuse people on the right of, is it not?
Here’s the quote Vitruvius looked up:
“On 2005-12-06 one of the national daylies quoted Mr. Martin as having said that “Mr. Harper’s version of child care is very different … than the one that is agreed to by the vast majority of people who are knowledgeable”.
Here’s what I said:
“we had Paul Martin suggest that parents weren’t knowledgeable about raising their children.”
So, Balb, how far off the mark was I? I said he was suggestie had Paul Martin suggesting , I didn’t say I was quoting him.
If you have an issue with something I’ve posted, take issue with the post. Kindly keep the personal insults to yourself.
I think it would be better that PAUL MARTIN and SCOTT REID were stranded on a lifeboat together in the middle of the atlantic with no paddles and no food or water see what would happend to them
Ok, I found the dead tree version in the outbound recycling queue. On the front page of the 2005-12-06 National post Mr. Martin is quoted as having said to reporters in St. John’s that “Mr. Harper’s version of child care is very different … than the one that is agreed to by the vast majority of people who are knowledgeable” [Ellipsis in original.]
I originally posted a comment thereto at SDA here http://tinyurl.com/c6v4o at 04:33 pm that day.
First he wanted Alberta to blow him, now he’s maligning parents who opt for independent thinking over state-imposed indoctrination. Don’t know whether I want to watch QP after hearing this. Not good for my blood pressure at all. Tim Murphy, far from being reprimanded for his offer to Grewal, was actually going to run as a candidate in Bill Graham’s riding, but BG wouldn’t move, apparently. And I saw this Sask Lib candidate (?) Alyssa Herle, who looks an awful lot like another Herle that hangs around the LPC. She’s been on CPAC a few times. Don’t know if she’s related, but sure looks it. THese Libs are like a malignancy that is spreading – a tumour in the soul of Canada. I’m making myself cry.
Consider that if some people use the 1200. for beer and popcorn at least the kids will have the 1200. they didn’t spend on beer and popcorn for food. … cash into the home is cash into home.
and it’s cash that won’t go the Quebec ad men.
Besides WHAT BUSINESS IS IT OF THE STATES WHAT ANYONE USES THEIR MONEYFOR. IT APPEARS THAT WHAT THE STATE USES IT’S MONEY FOR IS NONE OF OUR BUSINESS.
Fair is fair .. nez paw?
Scott Reid clearly demonstrates the arrogance in the Lib message to Canadians , “You’re too stupid to raise your own kids, so let us do it and brain wash the ones with more Liberal Bullshit” Scott Reid can blow me and everyone else in the West.
Nothing the Liberals say/do is spontaneous. Reid has done this for effect: to swivel attention away from Martin/Goodale & the Income Trust scamdal.
It is called “pivoting” —- pivoting is the new “Buzz” word.
Tonight, Reid & the gang are breathing easier; the sheep have grazed on.
The real message is: Return to the Great Shepherd, Paul Martin; he forgives you; you and your loved ones are safe with Grandfather Paul; Great Leader Paul Martin Loves you, you, you,…..
H/T 1984, George Orwell.
Candace, I think we can expect the personal insults to increase. I’ve noticed on other forums as well, that all the left wing seems to do is to ask for more sources or links. There’s no intelligent rebuttal or discourse, just stupid attacks.
Liberal John Duffy said that Scott Reid was right in Reid’s earlier remarks made on CBC TV.
John Duffy was questioned on CTV question period by Taber and was given a chance to clean the mess that Reid left from the CBC Sunday morning show but Duffy deliberately and emphatically said that Reid was right in his remarks. So this was not a slip of the tongue by Reid or the Liberal party. This is the opinion of the arrogant Liberals, that parents in Canada are not capable of spending their money wisely, or raising their children. The Liberals should not talk when it comes to spending money wisely after we just had Paul Martin admit that the ineffective 2 billion dollar gun registry was a complete flop and waste of money not to mention their death bed confession of their waste of hundreds of millions of dollars on AdScam as a program to fight separatism in Quebec. The Liberals are in no position to lecture or preach to anyone on how to spend money wisely or admonish Canadians to be honest.
Later this afternoon we got an apology from Scott Reid but what about John Duffy the Liberal spokesperson on CTV question period and other programs – I think we we got the sincere feelings of the Liberals and the contempt and insolence they hold for Canadian taxpayers.
check out the updates… I particularly like Warren Kinsella’s take on this.
I predicted back in August that Scott Reid wouldn’t be PMO spokesman come election day and I still think that’s true. He’s just too mean, nasty, and tightly wound.
The link to the entire interview is at http://www.cbc.ca/sunday/politicalpanel.mp3 but I’ll save you eleven minutes and just tell you this was no slip of the tongue, he repeatedly made remarks to this effect and they were backed up by John Duffy. Antoher direct quote was “He’s (Harper) gonna give people twenty five dollars a day, they can spend it on videos if they like.”
Okay… I shouldn’t do this because it is a friend of my sister’s but wouldn’t ya know… another Canadian blogger who seems to agree with Scott Reid. Surprising she isn’t voting liberal: http://graduateschoolbarbie.blogspot.com/2005/12/stephen-harpers-support-rich-person.html#comments
I couldn’t post my comments back but posted on my sis’ blog as she gave the rest of the family a voice to vent our anger.

MUST READ: A Column by Michael Campbell in the Dec 10 Vancouver Sun regarding the difference between the CPC & LPC Child Care Programs…it is Priceless. Scott (Blow Me) Reid will not want to read this one. It would be great if the CPC Party could get permission to copy and send out to all their candidates. For those of you that don`t know Michael is Gordon Campbell the Liberal mayor of Vancouver.
CORRECTION.. I ment to say that Michael is Gordon Campbell`s BROTHER…sorry about that!
What’s next will the liberals start telling us how to spend our child beneift cheques and CPP and EI ? I am going to need something harder than beer to drink if they are re-elected !
Scott Reid is an arrogant twit, BUT probably the best friend the Conservatives could have. HIs big mouth will get him in trouble, sooner rather than later.
hmmmmm a second vulgar gaffe from Dr. Evil’s son Scotty in less than a fortnight. I wonder if alcohol was the culpret that flushed this zinger from his blabbing mouth. Maybe Scotty is tilting the jug a bit these days because the pressure is getting high or the cops are getting cloiser. 😉
Mr. Reid’s comments are an absolute gift to the conservatives. In purely substantive terms, this comment ranks up there with “elections are not the time to discuss issues of substance.”
However, has anyone noticed how the globe buried the story? They made the story about the APOLOGY, rather then the comment itself.
The Globe’s election coverage has been so blatantly biased that it has made the cbc look balanced in comparison.
The Liberal plan is out and out socialism, round up the kiddies and put them in a nice warm, unionized, state run classroom.
However the Conservative plan is plain old wealth redistribution, take money from others and give it to parents with under-6’s.
Either way I end up paying for somebody else’s daycare. Neither plan gets my nod.
eventually the libs plan to put the kids in state run day care as per China. bury the kids to their waist in sand. attend only the feeding end all day.
Canadians already have their collective heads in the sand to the slow process. so why not the other end.
would be a solution for state run old folks homes too.
It took Reid and Duffy to get people’s attention.
But now that we have at it does anyone have the exact quote from Dryden last year. The following appears on a number of web sites:
“Dryden dismissed helping stay-at-home parents, comparing them to parents who tried to treat their children at home rather than take them to a doctor or to the hospital. (CFRA talk radio-Ottawa, November 18, 2004)”
It would be great to get an apology on that one as well if he didn’t.
I would really like to hear from the Liberal politicians and all the Liberal supporters about how much the parents will be charged per day to send their kids to these “subsidised” daycares. Nobody ever said that it would be free or that it would only cost $5.00 a day like in Quebec. As well, where are these facilities going to be and will they be accessible to all preschoolers. Now that that mouthpiece Reid has insulted all parents who the Liberals know would care more about buying popcorn and beer than taking care of their children, I’m predicting that the Liberals will in fact increase in the polls! It seems to me that my fellow Canadians reward anyone who lies, cheats and robs. Anybody who seems honest, forthright but has a “scary” look in their eyes has absolutely no chance whatsoever. It’s pretty pathetic that we have become the joke in the rest of the world.
The comments made by the Liberals on the gun control and child care fronts show a basic mistrust of average people. Should we trust people to run our country that do not trust us?
Duke made the point about the horrid behavior of children today implying that its caused by poor parenting. I would disagree with this. Realistically children spend most of their formative time in the care of teachers, we should be looking at them and the effects of Public School in general as the cause of this behavior not parents. I refer you to a good web site by a former teacher John Taylor Gatto.

He was selected as New York teacher of the year for 1989,1990,1991 and the New York state teacher of the year for 1992. This page has a letter he sent to The Wall Street Journal summing up the reasons why he was no longer willing to teach kids.

“I Quit, I Think”
Reverend Harper knows who he appeals to with 1200.00 a year. Who has big families with more than 2 kids under the age of 6? I know who does, do you? It isn’t middle class families. He’d promise anything to get elected. Sound like anyone else we all know? Mulrooney? Devine? all these Small dead Conservatives who bribed us in the 80’s with our tax dollars. Where is the taxpayers Federation?
Yeah Archie, talk about Conservative politicians of 12 years ago. Is that the best you can do, call Harper Reverend?
Fast forward 10 years then. National Daycare Program has huge waiting list, despite $billions thrown at it. In response parents seek private arrangements. Government threatens provinces with fines if they allow American style daycare to exist. NDP vows to outlaw private daycare. Anyone who doesn’t agree with government monopoly is obviously obsessed with destroying daycare. Government meets with provinces and agree on benchmarks for daycare waiting lists. Because government daycare is only available from 9AM to 5PM, obvious solution is to ban shiftwork. “Lets make the streets safe for daycare,” shreiks the Neo Liberal PM, Scott Brison
Scott Reid the canadian pit bull should have his teeth knocked down his throat
This is to Phil. Tell me exactly what the difference between the PC’s today and the ones 12 years ago? Different bowl same urine. There is no difference. Yeah I remember the past very well. Obviously you don’t.PC’s are against medicare, are for going to war for the US,always have deficit financing, always have high unemployment when in power, always have high intrest rates that hurt 90% of Canadians, are sexist, racist, homophobic, facist and last but not least corrupt………and these are historical facts. Look that up in your Funk and Wagnal!
