CRIME STATS SHOW LIBERAL GUN REGISTRY FAILING
Saskatchewan M.P., Garry Breitkreuz, Conservative Firearms Critic, released new Statistics Canada tables that show the reality of weapons crime in Canada – a view completely ignored by the Liberal government and its two billion dollar gun registry.
For the 548 Murders in 2003, Statistics Canada reports show:
� 29% of the 548 murders were committed with a firearm (6% of the guns used were registered, 26% were unregistered and the government didn’t know the registration status of the other 68%). Makes a sane person ask:. �What good is the gun registry?�
� 68% of the 161 firearms homicides were committed with handguns (that the government has been registering since 1934).
� Between 1997 and 2003, the registration status was known for 46% of firearm-related homicides. Of these, 86% were not registered and 80% of the accused persons did not possess a valid FAC or Firearms License. Why? Because 69% of murderers were already known criminals including five that had previously been convicted for homicide. Why were these murderers back on the street.
For 22,906 Robberies in 2003, Statistics Canada tables show:
� 88% of firearm robberies reported by police were committed with guns that were either already banned or handguns that should have been registered.
� 85% of injuries suffered by victims of police-reported robberies committed with firearms were committed with guns that were either already banned or handguns that the government has been trying to register for the last 70 years.
This is a dismal record all by itself and demonstrates why the Gliberal government should have done the right thing and cancelled this piece of crap when the absurd cost overruns were finally admitted to the public.
It would be quite bad enough if the impact of this stupidity didn’t spill over into other areas.
The firearms registry is a flash point issue in most of rural, and some not so rural, areas especially in the west. In the first place, it was bad public policy. Or, more to the point, it wasn’t public policy at all. It was a transparent, cynical effort by the Gliberals to attract votes from women and, to a lesser extent, immigrants in the Windsor to Quebec City corridor. The Gliberals simply exploited fears, which in many cases were based on events happening in the much more violent US culture, to gain votes. The brazenness of the effort offended as much as the action itself. People who actually knew what the hell they were talking about – the millions of firearm owners across the country – were simply ignored while the Glibs went vote hunting. Worse yet, the regulations were imposed equally across the country regardless of how well they fit local circumstances.
Symbolically, the registry has been devastating for the Gliberals in rural areas, especially in the west. Here is daily confirmation that, for the Gliberal Party, Canada consists of Ontario and Quebec. Rational voices that disagreed with the government were ignored as were regional differences in lifestyle. What was appropriate for Toronto and Montreal was the standard to be applied to the entire country. Period. The Gliberal Party does not and will not have any credibility for any of its policies in rural areas of the country as long as the firearms registry stays in place. >>>>

Why is this not ALL common sense to ALL?
Global TV did a interview with the parents of the teenager, that was murdered a couple of weeks ago in Toronto last nite. They chastized and ridculed Martin for proposing this brain dead ban on handguns. They’re idea to stop the vilonce was to bring in stronger sentencing laws and not to criminalize honest, law abidding had gun owners. I hope the interview gets shown a few more times on national TV.
I see Alberta is first out of the gate vowing to ignore the gun ban. In all my years in Alberta I Can’t reacll one incident where a gun collector or competitice shooter was ever involved in a violent shooting crime. Maybe Ralph has friends in one of the hundreds of shooting clubs across Alberta. According to actuarial stats the fireing line at these ranges is one of the safest environments on earth with liability insurance premiums for handgun shooters costing 8-10 bucks a year.
Martin’s innuendo/accusation that these people are causing crime is so ludicrous a local politician from a region with a large amount of legal handgun ownership reacted negatively and decisively in condemning Martin’s vulgar attempt at vote buying on the backs of honest law abiding citizens.

Estimated No. of Handguns in Canada 1,110,400 (probably more!)
Estimated Cost to Buy Back Each Handgun $500.00 (on average)
(Historical or “Collector” guns could exceed $10,000 each)
Estimated Cost to Administer (per gun) $100.00
Total Cost for Buy Back $666,240,000.00
Cost per Citizen (est. 30 Million) $22.21
If we take your number of 6 (12) handguns being 555,200 and multiply by 2 (low estimate), we get a number of 1, 110,400 handguns in Canada.
Cost to buy back each handgun estimated average of $500 each.
Estimated cost to administer the buy back (based on previous experience with the registry) $100 per gun.
This would give us a total estimated cost of $666,240,000.00 – $666 BILLION – MININUM!
(Probably adding 30 to 50% would not be unreallistic)
With an estimated population of 30 million people, the cost for every man women and child would be $22.21 – Not sure how that would translate to cost per tax payer.
Number of lives saved: NONE!

I was just wondering, anything over 10,000,000 to me is incomprehensible, but I’d like to know what we use here in Canada.
One billion = 1,000,000,000, or one thousand million, pretty much everywhere nowadays, to the best of my knowledge. As I recall, that’s always been the US way, the other version was UK but they’ve dropped it since WWII. The Lie-beral’s claim claim that half of the handguns used in crimes are stolen in Canada and that half are smuggled in from the U.S. What about weapons smuggled into Canada in shipping containers, such as the ones some of PMPM’s families ships carry?
Bruce, there is no basis whatsoever for the 50% figure for registered handguns used in gang murders. It was made up by an activist years ago (who then refused to back up stat) for overall gun violence. Apparently the Toronto Police told TO Mayor Miller this number (sure they did). The truth is nobody is really sure if handguns used in murders are previously registered, except for those seized. The Liberals did this purely for politics/optics, to be seen doing the right thing, rather than doing the right thing. You cannot solve a problem if you fail to define it properly in the first place. Their only defence could be that handgun murders happen despite registry. Using that logic, however, means hunting rifles will be banned next, before voting day. The gangs must be rolling around in laughter at this one. They wouldn’t be laughing if it was announced that 1000 more police officers and investigators would be hired to take care of this issue. Why not beef up the border to confirm that this is not the problem before criminalizing target and collector gun owners. Sorry, Mr Martin, for using common sense here.
